  1. That's not true. As of this moment, GameSpot has logged 596 ratings and 9 reviews. The average fan score is currently 9.2/10. That looks like a huge customer satisfaction rating to me. Granted those customers taste in games may be different than some of the folks here in this thread osokdfgr linked to a fan review with one of the lowest ratings. Did you read some of the other reviews that ranged from 8.8-10/10 to get a more balanced opinion? While jumping to conclusions about a game without ever trying it may not be too fair, it's even more questionable to jump to conclusions about the
  2. Dannik, have you had a chance to try GR2 Xbox MP over Xbox Live? If so, just wondering how you would compare it to your GR/DS/IT MP experience.
  3. http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/568/568725p1.html SWAT 4 Beta Today 12:46 am Starting today FilePlanet subscribers will be able to check out the closed beta for Irrational Games' SWAT 4 (which wasn't delayed after all if you were following that story). Here's the 411: Anyone who signs on let us know how it looks!
  4. If your friend's computer has a valid product key sticker on the case, I'd recommend that you just use a regular Windows XP CD (full version) to boot from and reinstall Windows, and then type in the product key on the case, not the key that came with the CD. The owner should have no probs re-authenticating the Windows XP installation within 30 days if it is a valid key. Only caveat is that if the product key is for XP Home, then use an XP Home disc. If it's an XP Pro key, use an XP Pro disc.
  5. Are you using a PS/2 or USB connection? Make sure the connection is secure. Also, if it's a USB connection, try another USB port. If the red light on the bottom of the mouse ever flickers out, that means you are not getting power through the USB port. Otherwise try another mouse and see if you have the same probs.
  6. Hey Biffa, great story! Fortunately, my wife isn't too hostile to me buying games these days, but I only have time to play them after she and the kids go to bed, and usually I'm too wiped out after a long day to play very long Anyways, reminds me of how I and another fan got the original GR1 PC for almost 50% off because of an error in a store advertisement flyer: http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1913
  7. What else is on that list? I'm starting to run out of games to play myself, so maybe you have some tips ← Well, I'm heading off from work right now to pick up GR2 Xbox, so that will be the game occupying most of my gaming time for awhile - especially if it's true that the normal difficulty is like the elite difficulty in GR1! On the PC front, here are the games I'm currently playing. Note that because of real-life commitments (work, family) gaming time is pretty limited, so I usually take a long time to get through games: In progress: 1. Call of Duty: United Offensive - I'm
  8. I just called my local EBgames and they finally got GR2 Xbox in. If you don't see me posting the next couple days you'll know why
  9. Hey Kurtz, I can understand your thirst for info about the PC version, believe me I want to know too! UbiRazz has said RSE is actually "reworking" the game, so I think it's more a matter that RSE does not want to release info too early until they've confirmed exactly what changes will make it into the PC version or not. I would guess that the majority of what we'll see in the PC version is already in the Xbox. Personally I am not setting my expectations too high that the PC version will be radically different than the Xbox, given the fact they are owned by Ubisoft and likely need to move
  10. Just a bit of an aside here: talking about Halo 2 and GR2, here's a bit of trivia! Did you know that there is a Red Storm connection with Halo 2? I got the Halo 2 Limited Edition DVD, and I saw the name Steve Cotton in the credits. Steve Cotton was one of the artists from the beginning of the R6 franchise (R6, EW, Rogue Spear) and became the Producer for Rogue Spear: Urban Ops. He made such classic maps as Space Shuttle for Eagle Watch and the jungle map in Covert Ops. Then he left to do Amped for Microsoft Game Studios. Looks like he's now moved over to Microsoft's other dev studio Bung
  11. Not sure if this is the right forum to post about this, but here it is ... two new job positions have been posted at the employment section of RSE's site: http://www.redstorm.com/employment/ Just curious which members of this forum are seriously interested in getting into the game industry? Here's your chance!
  12. With the release of GR2 for the Xbox this week, some fans of the PC version of GR have perhaps unrealistically expected we would get news about the upcoming PC version right away. The good news is that info is indeed coming, but we still have to be patient. Ubisoft's UK Community Manager "UbiRazz" has posted the following statement here at the official Ubi GR2 forums: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=40...2242#5051002242 (Thanks to Dannik for helping me find the source of the quote )
  13. Yeah, I remember you bringing that up way back when, and the article talks about it here: http://www.gamespot.com/features/6112889/p-15.html
  14. Hey Day, once again, very well-written review. I know I'll eventually try HL2, but it's quite far down my list of games I have time to play at this point. If you really like the game, make sure you read the 25-page report about its development we have been discussing here: http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=22268 I admire Valve for 2 other things: 1) Its huge support for modders - it's releasing the SDK right on the heels of the game's release 2) Its novel ideas for anti-piracy measures: a) the Steam activation made sure no one could play the game
  15. At the last E3, Red Storm showed some Eagle products that appear in GR2. Check out the first photo on page 2 of GR Retreat's E3 preview here: http://ghostrecon.3dretreat.com/gr2_e3_preview_2.asp Anubis was told that the Red Storm team did work with real-life Special Forces gear companies like Blackhawk and Eagle Industries to ensure the highest level of realism. So now we know where Alicia Diaz's cap and tac vest comes from. Anyone here can identify who makes her cool shades?
  16. Yes, there is a whole list of dedicated servers on the front news page of GR.net (look at the right column halfway down the page). Contact their respective server admins to get some tips on how they keep their GR servers up and running. GR was not built from the ground up with dedicated server support unlike other game engines (Quake, Unreal, etc.). Dedicated server support was added on to the GR engine at a relatively late stage which explains some of its quirks.
  17. Urgh - if Halo 3 is a PlayStation 3 only title, I'll die. Unless Sony drastically alters the gamepad. FPS on PlayStation is a lost cause for me. Ack ← Thanks for your comments again! Halo 2 was the first Xbox game I've ever played from start to finish. (I have GR1/GRIT Xbox, but never finished them since I've played it all on the better looking PC ) I'm pretty cumbersome with the gamepad too - took a little getting used to the first part of the game. I actually waited for Halo 1 to come out on PC to save time as I figured it would be faster to play through the whole thing with k
  18. Hey DS, Just want to say I really enjoy reading your posts. Helps to lighten up the place when people around here (including me) start getting too serious about what in the end are just computer/video games
  19. I would not recommend getting a Radeon 9200 SE. If you buy a 9200, you might as well get a GeForce FX 5500, which is a true DX9 card, and around the same price if I'm not mistaken Although Radeon 9200's are in the "9xxx" class, they are DX8 cards. This is how the 92xx cards rate from slowest to fastest: Slowest Radeon 9200 SE Radeon 9250 Radeon 9200 Radeon 9200 Pro Fastest Ref: http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88&pgno=0
  20. I posted this in the Computer Discussions forum. Here's the simple reply: my best advice is if you are upgrading your PC JUST for GR2, then do not do so until Red Storm/Ubi finalizes the minimum/recommended system specs for the game sometime next year. Why? - Even if you wait 3 months, you will get better technology for the same price as now - You will not be disappointed when you find out GR2 exceeds your new system specs, or that it runs at a slower framerate than you would have liked. Right now, NO one outside of RSE can predict what the minimum system requirements you will need f
  21. Your statement is incorrect. Make sure you back up your statements with some fact - all it takes is a quick search on Google E.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_mapping You can think of normal mapping as a more advanced form of bump mapping - so since GR2 has normal mapping, it does NOT need to just use bump mapping (which is older technology) BTW, here's the PS2 version of the video http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/675/675405/vids_1.html
  22. Hey Day, always glad to read your posts, and happy to see your review of Halo 2. I just finished it yesterday night too, so it's cool to compare notes. I finished the game on Normal difficulty (as I did with Halo 1 for PC), and it DOES make a big difference on the gameplay experience. It took me about 4 nights, few hours each (which fits with the 10-14 hours of SP that most gaming websites report). I'd suggest you check out IGN's comparison between the 4 difficulty levels here: http://xbox.ign.com/articles/565/565726p1.html According to IGN, playing on Legendary does alter t
  23. Hey, I just found out that the "Find" function has been revised and I like the format better than IE's - just hit Ctrl-F to try it out!
  24. Posted by SEN ONE in the ubi forums: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=40...43&m=4691007142 GameStop has a box pic and revised release date for GR2 PC - June 2005 http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=645824 Note that larger retailers like GameStop and EBgames do get approximate release dates from publishers, otherwise I wouldn't bother to bring this up. It's also interesting how they got the PC box art cover too. Please do NOT panic that GR2 PC is delayed - I'd take any retailer's release date with a large pinch of salt until confirmed by Ubisoft. As usu
  25. Nice find Crimson, congrats on the new card Dilligas. Good to see Dannik pointed out the first one was 128-bit - that is one detail most people miss and get disappointed why their 9800 Pro doesn't seem up to snuff.
