How can the Pc version be based off the XboX? Very different systems, Pc stronger and RSE have already said the versions will be different for Ps2, XboX and the Pc.
He is technically correct. As opposed to the PlayStation 2 and GameCube, the Xbox was designed upon the PC platform, and more specifically with an underlying a Windows/DirectX-based operating/graphics system. A PC and and Xbox are not very different at all when you crack them open.
Because both use DirectX 8 as a base, porting a game from Xbox to a Windows PC is much easier than say ... a PlayStation 2 game like Metal Gear Solid 3 to PC.
That doesn't mean they cannot make any substantial changes to the game when they do make the PC version, even if it is built on the foundation of what they did for the Xbox.
After all, the Xbox version was created on PCs.
Also, jmcdonald is correct that whinging (whining for all of us in N. America
) won't get us anywhere. What we need is positive constructive suggestions about what we want to see in the game.I think it's time to make a GR2 PC wishlist made ONLY by people who have actually played GR2 on the Xbox! And no whinging in the threadI bought an XBOX and GR2 especially for GR2. Does that qualify?

Yes, of course you qualify. We are working out the details of a pinned wishlist thread: for example, like reserving the right to aggressively edit posts to remove name-calling, personal attacks, or overly negative and inflammatory comments in general.

Well. I'd like to agree on WK's post but sadly I can't.
After a lot of thought, I bought an XBOX and GR2 to experience it myself.
Too many features of GR1 are left out of the XBOX-version which made it a completly different game.
Glad you bought the game deleyt - join the club

Now that you've actually played the game, why don't you list what changes you would like to see in point form in an objective neutral manner. This approach would be more helpful to the developers and have a greater chance of what you would like see changed become a reality.
You obviously are very passionate about GR, given the amount of time you've played the game, run your clan, and worked on your mods. However, you need to be more specific about what your ideas are, rather than just saying you are disappointed or don't have much hope for the PC version.
I think Kurtz has done a great job listing his ideas in another thread based on actually playing the Xbox version, and I hope others can follow his lead.
E.g.
- more precise control of the squad,- a recon ROE
- suppressed weapons for MP
- quick mission and recon
- full control over squad and weapon selection.
- Make the squad order system better by fixing the hold order and adding an "advance to" command for precise squad placement.
This kind of list is quick and easy for the devs to read, and they don't have to pick through a lot of the depressing negativity around here if you want them to have more time to make a great PC version

-
Great list Kurtz. That is the type of constructive criticism that RSE is looking for.
I think it's time to make a GR2 PC wishlist made ONLY by people who have actually played GR2 on the Xbox! And no whinging in the thread

I just don't understand it. This has to be a setting in my bios surely?! What priority should my drive be booting from in 1st, 2nd and 3rd?
I doubt it is a BIOS or OS problem. I think it is a physical hardware problem.
I always have my systems boot to the HD with the OS 1st to save time. (There's no point waiting for your system to search for a floppy or optical drive)
Is your HD plugged into your primary or secondary IDE port? You should also give us more info on your HD: manufacturer, speed, size, when you bought it etc.
What other devices do you have on your IDE cables (master/slave) - do you have more than one HD or optical drive? Are your jumper settings set properly on your drives?
Your problem may be your IDE cable, or even the IDE port. Try taking the IDE cable off your DVD ROM and swapping it with the one on your HD. Note that if you have a IDE cable with a blue or yellow plug, that is a higher speed cable (ATA66/100)
NOTE: I've got the DVD RW to write to the DVD's that I brought. Using nero burner at 1x speed?!?!Not sure if that is a question?

I also represent a clan of over 20 active members. They have also bought most of the PC games by RSE/UBI. When it came to Raven Shield I didn’t have too much to complain about. That game stuck to its Rough Spear roots. It just had some technical problems. Those can be fixed.
But this is not GR or even close to it. If your going to market a product under the banner of an extremely popular game, it should at least be similar. IMO, RSE/UBI is not being honest in their marketing of this product.
The major changes in GR2 mainly pertain to single player. I'm curious what aspects of the current GR2 Xbox multiplayer you think your clan members may object to? (Unless your whole clan just plays single player) From what I can see, GR2 Xbox MP plays just as intense or better than GR1 MP on the PC.
I think Raven Shield's gameplay is further removed from Rogue Spear's compared to GR2 vs. GR1, just from the fact that the feel is different using the Unreal engine.

Glad to see you got your system running well again Cobblers! Nothing beats a nice, clean reformat

With the DVD drive, there are definitely reports of certain media not working properly with certain drives. For example, a friend of mine and his bro-in-law both have BenQ DVD burners which don't recognize Memorex media.

So in the end, it's a process of elimination to figure out your problem. Take your DVD-R and see if it runs properly in another computer's DVD drive. If it works perfeclty, then the problem may be your optical drive.
Conversely, buy another brand DVD-R to use in your Pioneer drive and if it works well, then stick with that brand.

Actually, I'm not sure if Sony and Microsoft care too much that they are not selling as many consoles. Both make more money from sales of games, not hardware. In fact, MS loses money with every Xbox unit sold.
Sony already has won this round of the console wars with the PS2 and have already came out with their budget PStwo unit. (An aside: Where do you put the HD on that thing I wonder? I guess most people don't need the HD for most games, which is maybe why the next Xbox may not have a built-in HD too)
Microsoft's strategy is more to just get themselves into everyone's living room - whether it's through an Xbox or a Media Center PC.
As we speak, there are shortages of PS2 hardware and Xbox hardware this Christmas, so there's no way they'll top 2003, especially with the market already so saturated.

Reeves is hopeful that SCEE can meet its sales targets for the fiscal year: “If we don’t, it won’t be through lack of demand”.He did, however, respond to suggestions from third-parties that the lack of PS2 hardware this Christmas will have a major impact on software sales. “We have an installed base in Europe of nearly 26 million units,” he stated.
“I’m not sure that the next two or three million will make any real difference to software sales this Christmas.”

The voice acting is pretty poor, doesn't sound very professional. I hope they go back to a conventional briefing. If they did a video, make it like a real mission briefing.
I disagree with Kurtz in that I feel the voice acting is very professional (they even brought in Wesley Crusher from Star Trek:NG!). Red Storm has always used professional voice talent in their games.
It is well known that even the best actors may not be suitable to be voice actors in animated features (Disney, Pixar etc.), as voice actors need to over-exaggerate their vocals a bit to compensate for not being on-screen. I don't think this was a factor in GR2 though.
I do agree with Kurtz that I personally prefer the pre-mission briefings of the original GR. RSE did take a creative risk to make the mission intros more like a documentary. I think they did get it to work well. However, having the soldiers speak after the action takes away a bit of the tension in the storyline (for those who actually pay attention to the story
) . For example, we know they made it through the campaign OK. I would be happy if the PC version was changed to have text briefings for the missions, and had more detailed character bios available for us to read on the CD for us to get to know the characters (as opposed to putting them online where they eventually disappear whenever Ubi upgrades the site
) We got to know Team Rainbow like this, and it worked fine. Also, although the personalized in-game voices in GR2 are great, I did prefer the in-game voices of the fellow Ghosts in the original GR1. Although they were more generic, they sounded more calm and cool. I know some of the new Ghosts are supposed to be a little more excitable (like the young David Foster), but I guess I always imagined that the Ghosts are seasoned professional cool under fire.

LOL - I came across this last night, but didn't have time to post it here.

I wonder if you found it the same way I did.

LOL, I can tell you how I found it - I saw Serellan's post in this thread that he had updated his site:
http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php...ndpost&p=244914
Then I saw the link to the article in his articles/press section

Is that how you found it? Funny how none of the GR sites picked it up ...

No matter what your taste is in tactical shooter gameplay, you have to admit that the character models in GR2 are awesome.
1Up posted a great article a couple weeks ago (that I don't think anyone here noticed) that gives an excellent description of the process Red Storm used to create the new Ghosts appearing in GR2.
http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3136577&did=1
The article has very interesting quotes from three of GR2's developers. Here are some snippets of info:
Jeff McFadyen (Character Artist) who did the concept art and textures for the characters discusses how Red Storm purposely chose to use a variety of ethnicities, regional accents, and ages for the new Ghosts, and based the characters on real-life SF soldiers they met.
Joseph Drust (Character Artist) explains how the artists painstakingly measured and modeled all the gear so that the right proportions are kept. He also gave an interesting tidbit that Burke only wears one knee pad because this is the knee she always kneels on.
Christian Allen (Game Designer) explains how the characters were further fleshed out by portraying their personalities through the game's dialogue. He explains how the new cinematic briefings are used as a vehicle to establish the characters outside of the action before you start the missions.

For the PS2 mouse, check in your system's BIOS under power management features.

Yup. AFAIK, in a single-channel setup, when the computer is storing info in the RAM, it will use up the RAM on the first slot before continuing to the second one.
You haven't mentioned if you are running WinXP or Win9x on this machine. I've read somewhere that WinXP uses about 150MB of RAM when it is running (that is why they usually recommend a minimum of 256MB RAM for WinXP) while Win9x can run on 32MB of RAM.
So I would imagine that WinXP would run a bit more efficiently if the 512MB stick of RAM is in the first slot - to be honest, it's just a guess, and I don't have any benchmarks to prove it. Anyone please correct me if I'm mistaken!
I have personally got WinXP to run half decently on a Celeron 466MHz/128MB RAM with many of the fancier features turned off, but it did chug along.
-
Hey DS, do you have a link to the online version of the article or is this taken from a print mag?
-
I'd also open up your case and double check that the data cable (IDE or SATA cable) to your hard drive is nice and secure.
Also check your system clock ... if it's running slow, it could mean your mobo battery is dying and that can cause some funny probs.
-
You would be better off with memory clocked at 3200 running 2 sticks of identical memory.
Nurface, your recommendation would be good if he was running a motherboard with a Intel 865 or 875P chipset, as they support dual channel RAM
However, firefly does not need identical RAM as his system has the older Intel 845 chipset which only supports single-channel DDR RAM at maximum speed of 266MHz (i.e. PC2100 RAM). He also only has one RAM slot open.
@Firefly, at this point, it doesn't matter if you buy PC2100, PC2700 (DDR333), or PC3200 (DDR400) RAM as they will ALL run at 266MHz on your system (and I doubt you'll have much luck overclocking on a Dell motherboard)
So if you like, you can just keep your 128MB stick in there, and buy a 512MB stick of pretty much any kind of DDR RAM on sale at Best Buy and it should work. If it doesn't, Best Buy has a easier return policy than online stores.

Make sure you stick your new 512MB stick of RAM in the first slot though.

My original R6 works even on my rig with Win2k installed. Believe it or not, I get about 20FPS even with this very high end vid card.

Do you have the graphics running in software mode? (i.e. your CPU is doing all the graphics rendering work.) Even if it was just running in software mode with your system, it should be faster than that, unless your resolution is really cranked up.
Also, what resolution are you running the game at? Any AA and AF on?

So my question is.... how do I find out what memory type it has? Can I do this without pulling it out?
Most modern memory has info on it about who the manufacturer is, its ratings and timings, etc. which can be read by certain utilties such as Sisoft Sandra.
Download the Sisoft Sandra utility here:
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/redirect/dload.php?id=40
When you have installed it, click on "Mainboard Information" and let the utility analyze your system. Then look under "Memory Module" and let us know what kind of memory you have.
Also tell us what motherboard chipset you have, and any other system specs (CPU/OS/HD/graphics/audio etc.).
Also, once I know that does it matter what type I get? It would be better to get the PC2700 no? I figure a 512MB stick would speed it up immensely. Thanks for the help.
Yes, it matters what type of RAM you get. Certain old motherboards cannot support larger amounts of memory unless the RAM sticks have modules on both sides of the RAM etc.
Also, if your system is running Win9x and not used for gaming, there's no need to upgrade RAM. So we need to know more details about your system and what you want to use it for to give you a better recommendation.

@Recon, have you tried your mouse in another computer?
-
I'll likely decide whether to buy it after trying the demo

Happy bday Rocky!
Did your wife buy you NFS:UG2 for your birthday? Wish my wife would buy me computer games too instead of getting the usual ... socks etc.

@ CR6 - I've got the Logitech® MX™1000 Laser Cordless Mouse. This is the one with the side buttons on the scroller. Is this the one you have?
Wow, that's a real sweet mouse Cobblers. I would guess the side-scrolling feature for the wheel within games depends on individual game support for it. This is brand-new technology for 2004 (for both MS and Logitech) so I think it may take a few years for games to use it until this type of mouse technology penetrates the market better.
The mouse I have is the one Recon mentioned in the title of his post: the Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseand...ls.aspx?pid=004
The side buttons on my mouse I was referring to are not on the scroll wheel. They are just used to go forward/backward when surfing

Every GR pc player needs to rent an Xbox and take a look at the game, and draw their own conclusions.
Way to go Kurtz, great post!

Although I may not agree with everything in the post (but I do agree with a lot of it), Kurtz has offered the most articulate, balanced, and fair critique of the game I've read so far on these forums. He actually went and tried both SP and MP (i.e. not just half the package), mentioned negative points with backup reasons, but also said what he liked about the game.
In the end, remember that RSE made this version of GR2 for the Xbox, not for the PC, and likely fulfilled their objectives.
I would still not lose hope for the PC version to restore some of what we loved from the original GR.

Here's a link to the news at GameSpot

Both my wife and I use IntelliMouse Opticals at home - really love the two side buttons hehe
Are you running Windows XP? If so, you don't need to reinstall drivers, as WinXP has them built in.
Few other tips -
1) Have you tried plugging it into a USB port yet? WinXP will automatically install the driver
2) Unplug the mouse and you can try to uninstall the mouse from the Device Manager, then reboot and WinXP will automatically reinstall the driver
3) Go to the Control Panel and click on "Mouse". Go through all the options there to see if your mouse is responding properly.

in GR2 PC - [Cancelled]

Doh
Sorry about that, I'll go correct it ....
By the way, thanks for teaching me the word "whinge" - I've seen the word around but finally looked it up ... didn't realize it was from Aussie English.
Couple points:
If the "Ubi masters" don't care about a PC specific version, why did they decide to make the Xbox and PS2 versions different? They probably spent more money, time and resources doing that than getting Ubi Shanghai to do their usual straight port of Xbox to PS2 (like they did for GR1, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six 3). If they are committed to optimizing GR for the PS2, why wouldn't they spend a bit more resources to do the same for the PC?
Also, I would give the team at Red Storm more credit for being forward-looking when developing the GR2 engine. I'm sure the year or so Serellan said they spent doing the research for the new engine would be used to create a foundation for more future games than just GR2. For all we know, the new Rainbow Six 4 engine for PS2 may share components of the GR2 engine.
Do you remember how fast they were able to come out with a CQB game (SOAF) based on the GR engine? And it was a quality product.
You know, if I was Ubi spinmaster ... umm, I mean PR guy
, I wonder if it would help if they specifically state they are NOT "porting" the Xbox version to the PC, but saying they are "creating" a PC version, albeit built on the foundation of what they did for the Xbox.
