Variety.com has published the following report:"Paramount has acquired film rights to Tom Clancy's videogame "Splinter Cell" and hired Peter Berg ("Friday Night Lights") to direct. Michael Ovitz, Clancy's longtime manager, will produce; Berg, Clancy and Yves Guillemot, chief of vidgame publisher Ubisoft, are exec producing."ComingSoon.net has more information here:
"Variety says Berg is writing the script along with Splinter Cell game writer J.T. Petty and John J. McLaughlin (Man of the House). Paramount said the movie is aimed at combining the game's blend of stealth action with a "dynamic, original" character."The original Splinter Cell designers have admitted they based Sam Fisher's look on George Clooney. Wonder if they have him in mind to star in the movie too

OK, I recently picked up the PC Gamer issue with the DVD. Here is the deal on all versions of Rainbow Six:
1. Rainbow Six Original CD from 1998 - Full install does not require CD to play, does not have support for WinXP obviously
2. Rainbow Six from Tom Clancy's CT Classics game pack - Updated version with WinXP support (basically writes registry entries) and requires CD to play
3. Rainbow Six "free" with PC Gamer - Updated version with WinXP support (basically writes registry entries) and does NOT require CD to play with full install.

When I did a search on the site for presenters by company (Red Storm), it only came up with four, but when I looked at the full list, there are seven there. Thanks for picking that up NYR!
Also great find on the R6-4 subtitle
I guess they won't be following tradition using the "R.S." initials

The schedule for the next Game Developers Conference in March 2005 is already up, and it looks like there will be at least (edit) 7 speakers from Red Storm!http://www.cmpevents.com/GD05/a.asp?option=G&V=2&CPid=54
Here is RSE's line-up for GDC 2005:
Christian Allen - Navigating the Minefields: Military Accuracy in Tactical Shooters
Heather Chandler - Ghost Redux: Production Challenges for Ghost Recon 2 for Xbox
Jason Clark - Essential Math for Physics Programmers
Doug Oglesby - Art Leads and the People Who Hate Them
Marq Singer - Essential Math for Physics Programmers, Uses and Misuses of Middleware
Jim Van Verth - ssential Math for Physics Programmers, The Future of Curved Surfaces
Dave Weinstein - Issues and Implementations in Multiplayer Game Development, A Case for Message Passing Architectures, The State of Game Industry Crediting
Some interesting tidbits of info from the session descriptions include:
- During the two-year production cycle of Ghost Recon 2, the internal development team grew from about 30 people to more than 50, not including the testing, localization, and external resources used.
- Red Storm is currently working on an unannounced title for both the PS2 and PC. This may be the recently announced Rainbow Six 4.
-
I can't even play it right now. I am getting an Access Violation (Illegal Write) error. Does anyone have an idea what may cause it? I don't see any forums from the publisher or developer to ask at.

Did you try installing the FSW demo? Did that work?
-
~~~ No longer need the help, decision apon a 9800 has been made, thx ~~~
Doh, glad you decided on the 9800. Make sure you get a 256-bit
Pro version. Some 3rd party manufacturers sell 128-bit ones which are significantly slower.
-
Depends what you want your video card to do.
If you want to watch TV on your computer, the Radeon 9600 AIW is the best All in Wonder card around, as it has an FM tuner that even the Radeon 9800 AIW lacks.
If you want pure 3D power, you will get WAY better bang for your buck buying a Radeon 9800 Pro which is about the same price (!) as a Radeon 9600 XT, and the 9800 Pro is probably on average 30% faster or more depending on the game.
Most optical drives have 2 cables coming out of it:
1) The molex power connector supplies the power
2) The IDE cable transfers data.
Some newer optical drives like Plextor's have Serial ATA connectors which have 150 MB/sec transfer rate instead of IDE's now pokey 33 MB/s.
I built one Shuttle system - it was excellent.
You have to first decide what are you using a small form factor (SFF) PC for - gaming? PVR? LAN party rig?
Best to stick with a lower speed processor (e.g. Pentium 4 2.4 GHz Northwood - do not get a Prescott!) as the faster ones get too hot for the small form factor's cooling system
The SFF systems I've seen mainly have an AGP slot for a video card. They use onboard sound, ethernet, firewire etc. so you really don't need other PCI cards.
The Shuttle system I built was for a PVR and could fit a Radeon 9200 All-In-Wonder with no probs.
-
Should I know something about this card before I install it?
Nope, but you have to give us more system info - what sound card are you using now? What kind of speaker set up do you have? 2 speakers or 5.1 etc?
Anyways, just:
1) Uninstall current sound card drivers
2) Disable onboard sound in the BIOS if you have it
3) Stick in the card, don't bother with the CD ROM audio cable as most modern mobos transfer sound digitally through the motherboard
4) Install the drivers for the Audigy from the CD (not included with WinXP as far as I know, not even with SP2)
5) The Audigy drivers install a separate Windows startup sound, so both the Audigy and WinXP startup sounds may conflict. If they do, just turn off the default Windows one under Sound properties in the Control Panel
We did try to help you. You were asked to check your IDE cable and you said you checked your power cable. I'm sorry to say but I think sometimes the best friendly advice is that you should bring your system to your local computer repair shop.
GameSpot has a short article about Ubisoft's latest financial announcements. Looks like Ghost Recon 2 will likely help Ubi's bottom line this year as it had a strong showing at third-place in November sales for Xbox in the United States.
Who says Ubi doesn't support modding? They even released the source maps
http://www.3dgamers.com/news/more/1096480485/
As promised, Ubi Soft has now released the map editor for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, allowing you to modify and create new levels for their third-person stealthy action sequel. The package contains the map editor with related files, the complete set of original SCPT maps in editor format, and plenty of documentation, while a separate download with two example maps (Squat and Deftech2, a new version of DefTech) is also available. -
Here's a call out to all you people running GR1 dedicated servers.
Besides anti-cheating measures already mentioned I think it would be useful to come up with a detailed list of dedicated server features you would like and add it to the GR2 PC wishlist.
I've seen some stuff about features like how to ban/eject troublemakers in this thread, but it hasn't been posted in the wishlist yet
I know that the word is that GR2 PC info will be coming out In Jan. But I would like to request just a little info before Christmas. Just the min. spec. that will be needed to run the game.
I don't think even Red Storm will know what the min specs for the game will be until close to when the game goes gold. This is when the QA guys run the near final code on various setups to confirm what specs give you a playable frame rate etc.
If you are JUST upgrading your machine for GR2, you are better off to wait a few more months. If you want to upgrade for other games before Christmas, then check the specs of the other games first.
-
Is that disc in Mpeg anywhere?
Unfortunately, as far as I know, the content of the Making of Ghost Recon CD is still copyrighted material not for public distribution. Making video from the CD available for free download would be illegal.
Otherwise, I'm sure all the GR fan sites would have downloads links to the material long ago.
Thanks to everyone for contributing your suggestions so far!
I have edited the first post to add one more guideline:
Please do your best to read all previous posts and do not to repeat suggestions. I know some people want to repeat things to emphasize a point, but it just clogs up the list. E.g. We all know almost everyone here wants solid mod support out of the box for GR2!
Also, thanks to Kurtz, here's a encouraging note by Ubisoft's GR community manager BulletTooth over at the official GR2 PC forums which I think applies to this wishlist at GR.net:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=40...42&m=2341053942
I've always maintained that feedback and feature suggestions are always welcomed and encouraged. You have seen for yourself that the developers read these boards, so this is a way to communicate your wants and needs to them. The more constructive, the greater the chance of developers beign receptive to input and feedback.However, we will rarely comment on suggestions as we don't want to get your hopes up that all of your input will be included in the game, but it will at least be listened-to.
Can we correctly assume that your F: drive is your CD drive?
One of the most common reasons for it not to show up is if either the data or power cable to your optical drive inside your system has come loose.
However, before you open your case, check your BIOS when you boot up to see if it detects your optical drive and let us know.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with tinkering around inside computers - if you aren't, bring it to a reliable repair shop.
I wonder if people realize that Robbie Edwards (GR1/GR2 Xbox producer), made those comments in May. Two months later in August it was announced that the PC version was to be delayed. I'd take what Robbie had to say with a grain of salt. Many interviews have been done since May, and many things have changed since then.
Not sure if many people here remember that when the new official GR2 site launched, there was a quote that said that Darren Chukitus, the Producer of our much beloved original GR1 for PC
, will be the Producer for GR2 PC. Hope this fact may help inspire some hope about GR2 PC for some folks around here
I have a feeling Robbie Edwards was tapped to be the Producer for GR2 Xbox based on the success of the Xbox version of GR1 and GRIT.
Sorry, I didn't read the pinned thread you added CR6. Doesn't the "experiment" take away some of the fun of suggesting things for GR2 for those of us who have never used GR2 on the xbox.
I originally thought we should limit the suggestions by those who haved played GR2 on the Xbox, but I know some people have limited financial resources and can't buy/rent an Xbox just for GR2.
So the wishlist thread is open to everyone. Note I didn't say in the guidelines that you had to play the Xbox version. Just try to keep your ideas concise. I also added a new guideline not to repeat other's suggestions as much as possible as we want to keep the list lean and mean.
So I guess I'll have to keep my opinions to myself now, or until I either use the xbox version, or the PC version is finally released.
Go ahead an post your ideas - the whole point is that it gives fans an opportunity to list their suggestions while the PC version is in development in one place they know RSE devs will see them.
Someone posted this fix for the new v66.93 drivers at 3dR
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=36541
Note this problem apparently is only for Unreal 2 games using the new Nvidia drivers on Athlon platforms, not Intel.
-
Moderators: If this thread becomes a flame fest or overly argumentative, just delete it.
Thanks for taking the initiative to start this thread. We were considering pinning it, but decided there was still too much questions and discussion here for devs to have to pick through.
So EVERYONE please check the pinned wishlist here and read the first post carefully
Kurtz, I hoped to first PM you about editing your post, but I decided to take a risk and go ahead and do it. I hope you don't feel offended that I took the liberty to edit it and use your post as an example of what I mean.
My hope is that people will compare your original post and my edited post side by side to see what I mean by:
a) communicating suggestions clear and to the point (not too wordy) while at the same time being specific
b) neutral objective suggestions and avoiding potentially inflammatory or condecending wording (not saying that your post necessarily had it)
c) No questions or commentary about merits of suggestions - you can do that in this thread
-
OK, here's an example of what I mean ... Kurtz has made some great suggestions in his original post here
http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=22756
and I have reposted it here with a few edits that follow our above guidelines
1. I would like to see orders implemented to have more precise control over the squad in GR2 PC.
a) The most important improvement would be an "advance to" command instead of "advance". It could be context sensitve or a one button order targeted to a specific location on the ground. The squad would go to that location and wait further orders.
b) Rework the hold order so that the squad must hold in place until it is ordered to move or regroup.
c) A "recon" order where the squad moves forward in a targeted direction until it makes contact, reports contact and takes cover until further orders.
d) The hold, suppress and regroup orders are good. The flank orders are too vague, you have no idea where they are going to end up. The only way a flank order would work is if you could tell where they were going to end up, as in using a waypoint system.
d) The order command should be hotkeys, not menus. There were no menus in GR and that was good. Please do not make a heads-up menu for rate of fire in the PC version.
f) I did not see how you could string orders on the Xbox. Please make this mechanism more clear in the PC version, perhaps with the use of tac map.
2. The far spotting range for enemy AI should be the same as GR 1. It is too far in GR2.
3. My experience on the Xbox was that they ran in front of you, did not use cover, did not evade fire and just took hits until they went down, and did not automatically heal team mates, only reported it. Please improve the team AI and allow them to be more autonomous.
4. I felt that the GR1 enemy and team movement animation was more realistic than in GR 2. For example, the enemy AI have the ability in full run to make a sudden diagonal 45 degree cut worthy of the best in the NFL.
5. Bring back the blood and the limp.
6. Put a selection of suppressed weapons in for MP, quick mission and especially for "recon" gametype. Choice is the key to variety and replayability. Make the M29 available for all quick missions.
7. Include some interior settings for a little variety.
8. Ship "Stone Ed" and all modding tools with the CD.
9. Fix the Ubi lobby and address cheating. An anticheat program or a third party software like PB could be optimized to check people only once when they enter a server and other intrusive features like Screenshots could be removed or turned off, and this optimizing would eliminate the lag induced by only checking files before the game starts. It also seems that an anticheat could be continually updated or autoupdated, and it would be mandatory only on the Ubi service.
10. Make sure the spawn zones are adequately separated for "seige". Look at the settings in GR.
11. Fix the glitches on see through vehicles.
12. Redo the briefing. Either go back to the static page with voice over or do a real briefing with a vid or cutscene with an officer addressing the squad in front of a map or board. I prefer not to have the briefing like a debrief or after action report. Finish with a static page summary.
13. Redo the voice acting. Make the dialogue fit in the context of the moment, make it mission related. Things like "contact", "tank sighted", "tank destroyed", "we're getting flanked", "man down, need medic", "targeting objective", etc.
14. Put the medic in MP for certain gameplay modes, it would be great for coop and T vs T.
We are going to try a little experiment here ... hope it works
Previous GR2 wishlists dealt with what people wanted changed between GR1 to GR2. Now that the GR2 Xbox is out, we are starting a new wishlist to see what people would like to see changed between GR2 Xbox and GR2 PC.
Red Storm does monitor fan forums, and has a solid history of implementing fan requests into their games. We want this wishlist to be a one-stop simple and clear list for the devs to read.
Please list what changes you would like to see in point form in an objective neutral manner. Note that this thread is NOT for questions or discussions about the merits of a proposed change - that should be left to the regular part of the forum.
Forum staff reserve the right to edit this particular thread aggressively to remove anything we deem as inappropriate comments. We also reserve the right to post other people's suggestions here with modifications to the original poster's language to make their statements more clear or less negative or inflammatory.
Edit: Also, in an attempt to keep this wishlist lean and mean, please do your best not to repeat suggestions made in previous posts as they will be deleted at our discretion.
I'll guarantee you Lockdown is not the PS2 version of Black Arrow. Black Arrow was made by Ubisoft Montreal, and Ubi Shanghai would do the port, not Red Storm. Although I am doubting Ubi will do the PS2 version of Black Arrow ...
Ubi has publically stated that Red Storm is working on the PS2 version of Rainbow Six 4.
