  1. Ooo, sweet case. I like Antec cases and power supplies. Couple questions ... is it aluminum? I've read that aluminum enclosures can drop temps a few degrees as they disappate heat better - e.g. Cooler Master and Lian-Li cases Also, did it come with a power supply? Can you chose the wattage? (like getting 480W vs. standard 350W)
  2. I agree that most people that visit these forums are concerned that GR2 gets great mod support, but the reality is that the majority of people who buy these games just play what comes out of the box ... and don't use mods - at least in the case of GR1. In fact, the majority also just stick to single player. I don't know if there are any statistics, but I'd be curious what percentage of people who purchased BF1942 also installed the Desert Combat mod.
  3. I just picked up this game on sale over the holidays and tried it out the first 5 levels tonight. First impressions: - Shipped on 4 CDs!! I wish I knew beforehand they had a DVD-ROM version too - The graphics are AWESOME. The game looks spectacular at 1600x1200 Ultra-high detail on my rig - The visuals look right out of the movie, like how they used the Massive engine to create the huge battles - It's kind of a combo of using heroes in WarCraft 3, and the having large amounts of units like in Rome: Total War - while not having too hard a learning curve - So far it's been fun, and wel
  4. If you define GR2's competition as a game that will draw gamers and their money away from purchasing GR2, there's no doubt in my mine that Battlefield 2 is a major contender. Currently with GR2 Xbox, whether you like Red Storm's approach to single player is a matter of personal preference, but everyone must admit that GR2 is one of the best multiplayer shooters available on Xbox Live. However, when it comes to a PC version, the "average" player (which is not the people who post in these forums) will simply say "Battlefield 2 has vehicles and GR2 doesn't" - guess what they are going to b
  5. I found this useful since I open up about 8 favorite news sites at a time: http://theinquirer.net/?article=20453
  6. I agree - and your mobo fan connectors do more than supply power to the fans, they will actually monitor the RPM and possibley allow you to adjust fan speed.

  8. Where did that ever happen? I'm assuming you are complaining about GR2 Xbox, but I've never once encountered this happening in the whole game. If you've played the Xbox version, let us know when this happened to you. But if you actually haven't played it, then it's unfair to mislead people reading this thread that something like this happens in the game.
  9. Your screenshot looks OK to me. I know this sounds funny, but did you reboot your computer yet? Also, did the computer store install WinXP from your own CD?
  10. Well, it's not absolutely accurate, but you could run an intensive benchmark program and immediately reboot after to look at your BIOS temps. Your CPU won't cool down more than 2-3 degrees while your system reboots. This will give you some indication if your mobo software is similar to your BIOS hardware monitor. I use the Intel Desktop Control Center with my Intel mobo which gives the same readings as my BIOS, so that's how I monitor my temps under load.
  11. Quite an interesting discussion here ... funny how MGS, SC, and CoD are all linear and are excellent games, but GR2 Xbox gets slammed for being linear.
  12. The Prescotts get very hot compared to their equivalent Northwoods. I usually recommend people who want Intel systems to either get a Northwood P4 while they are still available. How are you detecting your hardware temps? Using the software that comes with your mobo, or in your BIOS? I find some mobo software (esp. ASUS's) reads temps way higher than the mobo BIOS does. I'd trust the BIOS readings if there is a discrepancy.
  13. 50C under load is probably as cool as you are going to get it with your current set up and it's absolutely fine IMHO. I personally wouldn't bother changing anything if it were me. If you were really motivated, you could get a copper heatsink with a large fan, use better themal paste (rather than the stock thermal pad that comes with the Intel heatsink) and change to an aluminum case with fans on the side and top of the case. All this may get the temps lower 5-6 degrees - not sure if that's worth the cost, as with all that you could just buy a new CPU. I have a P4 3.4GHz Northwood/stock
  14. Check out links to the Thermal Paste Shootout here: http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4804 The Shin-Etsu paste comes on top, but it's hard to find, and there are different variations. I'd suggest you usually can't go wrong with Arctic Silver. Either Arctic Silver 5 http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm Or Arctic Silver Ceramique (which is what I used) if you want s non-conductive thermal compound. http://www.arcticsilver.com/ceramique.htm
  15. Check this thread for a detailed discussion of CPU temps. http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php...ndpost&p=202819 We need more info about your machine: 1) Do you have a Northwood (512KB L2 cache) or Prescott (1MB L2 cache) Pentium 4 CPU? 2) Are the temps you are quoting under load or idling? 3) What kind of case do you have? How many fans? 4) Some mobo software allows you to adjust your CPU fan (like Intel's Desktop Control Center for Intel brand mobos) but depends how noisy you want your system to be too.
  16. Anyone find any more updated news in the last couple days about whether this purchase is "hostile" or not?
  17. Hey GothicSnake, just curious how much of the game did you play so far? How many levels did you complete?
  18. Those map packs contained copyrighted material that allowed people that did NOT own SOAF to play the SOAF maps. If people can download the SOAF maps without buying the game, how are the Red Storm people going to feed their families? RSE/Ubi have said it's OK to use SOAF with GR if you bought and OWN both games. Anyways, SOAF is available real cheap now with the Tom Clancy Counter-Terrorism Classics pack. http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5306 I bought the 3 game pack for $10 Canadian at Staples. The best thing is it has Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear code updated to prope
  19. 3d Retreat uses Snitz forums, not PHPbb. The problem was that another website hosted on the same server used PHPbb and was not secured. Fortunately we do regular backups and the majority of the site and our forums was pretty much back to normal within 3 hours of the attack.
  20. I'm pretty sure the folks at Red Storm have seen it. Unfortunately, no "official" biography of Jodit Haile will ever come out, so giwex's is the "unofficial official bio" as far as I'm concerned Find out a few more details about the bio here from giwex: http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4925 I'm also a bit disappointed that the bios for the GR2 specialists aren't as detailed as the original GR1 specialists
  21. Folks, this is a little off topic, but I need to say this: Day, you should buy GR2 for the Xbox if you want a modern day Call of Duty. I have played both now, and I feel that some of the gameplay in Call of Duty PC did share several similarities with GR2 Xbox ... e.g. 1) Playing as a single soldier throughout the campaign 2) Having AI backups with personalities that you get to bond with throughout the campaign 3) More linear missions I personally thought Call of Duty on the PC and GR2 on Xbox were both outstanding and each had excellent production values. However saying that, I d
  22. Depends if you have digital speakers or not. I have a Creative Inspire 5.1 speaker system with my Audigy 1 Gamer, and I did not check off digital output as they are analog speakers.
  23. I built the system for a friend, and he bought the Shuttle case at a local retail store (CompuSmart here in Canada). Are you planning to build an Intel or AMD system?
  24. That's not correct. The novel was written at the same time as the game. Clancy and Red Storm threw ideas back and forth during the process. Brian Upton from Red Storm said certain ideas from the novel made it into the final version of the game (Water Ride and the last BioDome level) so there's no way Clancy wrote the novel after the game.
