I play GR on my main rig with an Audigy 1, and have never had the popping/static issue. Would appreciate if anyone reading this with an Audigy 2 let us know if they ever had problems? I trust you have the latest Audigy 2 ZS drivers from Creative? Also double check all your wiring to the speakers etc, and try the game with headphones to confirm it is the card. In the end, we can't really blame GR for the popping noise since the last patch came out before the Audigy 2. If anything, it's maybe a problem with Creative's drivers and we all know how often they update them

Cool, thanks for the clarification

I personally hope the update will be available on OXM, as I currently don't have Xbox Live either. However, I am doubtful ... there were a lot of GR:IT maps that were released on Xbox Live that never made it onto the OXM disc.

GR2/Xbox patch early details announced.

Great news, thanks to Serellan for the update and to Dan for letting the folks here know -
Awesome news! Great to see Red Storm coming through with solid support for the game post-release.

I've always wondered about these jumbo snowflakes, but never saw them cuz I've been running Radeon cards the last 2-3 years. I've finally picked up a refurbished GeForce FX 5700 for my work system and tried the last 2 GR missions (Willow Bow and the Red Square ones) with the v66.93 drivers and the snowflakes look a reasonable size to me (kinda fluffy). Granted I haven't played these 2 levels for over a year, so I'll check how they look like at home on the ATI card.

Have you tried turning off hardware acceleration for your sound card yet? Go to Control Panel -> Sounds -> Audio tab -> Sound playback -> Advanced button -> then in the Advanced Audio properties dialog pick the Performance tab and turn the slider all the way to the left (i.e. no hardware accleration) GR had this popping issue with a lot of onboard sound chips, and this was usually solved by turning off hardware acceleration. This is the first time I've heard about this issue with an Audigy card

You pay a bit of a premium to buy Corsair RAM, but besides the price, I've never heard anything bad about Corsair. Just some history: This Corsair RAM you're thinking of buying uses Samsung modules and was the first to come out with the lowest DDR1 timings possible (2-2-2-5). Corsair was so pleased with them that I read somewhere they bought all of Samsung's stock of these extra-low latency chips. Since then, Crucial and the others have caught up. I personally have bought the previous generation of this memory last May which was based on Hynix RAM modules running at 2-3-2-5: Corsair X

Ooo, Antec Super Lanboy case! Gotta love that 3dfx PCI card - I'm still running a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI myself in one of my older systems. Who wrote the Linux drivers for it? Also, what brand 550W PSU did you get? Some cost as much as the case

Do you just want the case or any other components in it? Try checking on Ebay ...

What OS are you using? If Win98SE and up, have you tried msconfig to see what apps/services are starting up in your System Config Utility?

Thanks for the tip Rocky. Definitely going to give this one a try

Good advice by WK. Another suggestion is to protect your computer from your brother in future visits by giving him his own User Account but make it "Limited" so he can't install potential malware like spyware and trojans.

GR1 doesn't natively support multiple monitors. AFAIK, the only way to play on >1 monitor is with specialized driver support like one created by Matrox for its Parhelia board. http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3831

You can grab 'em here: http://files.3dretreat.com/display.asp?catid=85

You're right. When GR1 came out, 3dfx closed down, so Voodoo graphics cards are not supported. The main issue was that the fonts were blurry: http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1521 BTW, your Voodoo 2 is an add-in card (needs another graphics card to do 2D stuff). 3dfxzone.it Fast Voodoo2 XP Gold is a driver that lets it work with WinXP. I'd suggest you make sure you update to DirectX 9c, and play on lowest settings as your computer just meets the minimum spec for the game. Your best bet is to pick up a newer cheap PCI video card (like the Radeon 7000) if you really wa

What version of Linux are you using? Does it include drivers for your particular SCSI controller card? I know with installing WinXP, you usually have to install a RAID controller's drivers from a floppy disk shortly after booting from the WinXP CD.

Serellan, did you go easy on these guys?

On a semi-related note to the original topic of this thread, Yahoo! News has an interesting article about how U.S. Marines in Fallujah are using video games to help unwind and build morale. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor..._gung_ho_gamers -
Agreed on the durability. I wouldn't lug my aluminum case outside my house too much - might smudge that nice brushed aluminum finish Ever think of modding your case to put side panel and top fans in? Also, last year I helped a friend put together an Antec Sonata case. It had some really cool features like internal drive bays in individual trays with rubber grommets to absorb hard drive vibrations and included one of those large 120mm Fans: the benefit is it moves more air at a lower RPM, thus reducing noise. The Sonata is not really meant for super powerful hot CPUs though, but exce

Yup, firefly is right. It allows for a straight-through horizontal flow of outside "cooler" air to constantly flow over the CPU. The standard ATX case's airflow is an "S" shape which doesn't really make sense. Cool air is supposed to come in through the front bottom of the case, go up past your hot hard drives, graphics card, CPU and RAM, and exit up by the power supply ... yeah right Problem is it is usually impeded by power wires, flat IDE cables, long graphics cards etc. With old Pentium II's and III's, this was OK, but with toasty new P4's and Athlons, today's powerful computers n

Hey ScooterMX, welcome to GR.net. Did you try GR2 on the Xbox yet? Let me address each of your points cuz they aren't accurate if you are talking about GR2: GR2 Xbox has a good sized manual included with the game. I'm not sure if you are referring to other games - maybe you should give us some examples. All games suffer from this, especially PC games since it depends on what system specs you have and what graphic options you turn on. Can you tell me you are getting HL2, Doom 3 or Far Cry running a smooth 30-60 fps on the average PC gamers' system? In fact, console games likely -
Doom 3 made their #11 on Eurogamer's list of top 50 games. No GR2 there, in fact haven't seen GR2 on anyone's top lists of 2004 (GameSpot, IGN) Only Clancy game that has made a few lists is SC:PT.
