It will be free, but you need to have a "genuine" copy of Windows XP installed. I finally tried it out and was impressed. However, after I ran it (with the most up-to-date definitions), I ran SpyBot and AdAware after (in that order) and both picked up things AntiSpyware didn't report (mostly tracking cookies but at least one spyware program). So now I run all three

Doesn't sound good. Have you tried a fresh reformat yet? Personally, 90% of the computers I've installed SP2 in have had no probs. The 10% I did have probs were fixed with a fresh reinstall. Don't know if this makes a diff, but they were all Intel systems (P3's and P4's) I agree Windows Firewall and Security Center isn't great (I use the free version of ZoneAlarm myself) but one of the benefits of having SP2 is that it allows you to install all further critical patches available post SP2.

Hmm, I've installed CD burners on pretty much every system I've built, and haven't come across this problem. I usually use Roxio's Easy CD Creator, Nero or Window's default copying (based on Roxio's) First thing I'd suggest is to turn off AutoPlay to see if it stops your system from crashing ... several ways to do it in XP here: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article03-018 Then I would check msconfig to see if your CD burning program turns on at startup and disable it.

Is this a home computer? Are you behind a router that assigns IP's to a network?

This request likely refers to Win9x systems. Have you tried running the game in XP with Normal font size? What happens? If you really need smaller than Normal font size in WinXP, just go to Display Properties -> Appearance -> Advanced Button -> click on the image of the Windows until the Font dropdown does not appear greyed out -> chose font size 6-8 should be adequately "small"

I find some motherboards power mangement is just incompatible with stand-by mode. Usually Windows detects this and the stand by button is greyed out. What kind of mobo do you have? Google to see if others have the same issue with your mobo/chipset. I'd suggest playing around with the power management settings in the BIOS to see if that helps. Personally, I tend to just shut off my computer if I don't need to use it for the next hour or so.

LOL!! Thanks for spending the time writing up the report to tell the rest of us about your visit! Really looking forward to it

Good choice NYR. I bought two of them several months ago ... originally was going to put them in a RAID 0 array but found out there was no performance gain http://forums.3dretreat.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5475 So now I just run them independently (on seperate SATA headers) with the OS on one and I put the virtual memory on the first partition of the 2nd one. They are suprisingly quiet and cool for running at 10K (I do have 2 intake fans built-in to my Lian-Li case blowing cool air over them though I also have a 3rd 160GB WD IDE HD for storage on the same system)

Most BIOSes in the last several years allow you to manually detect the CD drive using the BIOS. (Usually the first subsection in the BIOS screen) Also make sure the CD drive jumpers are set properly to master.

I think DS is onto somthing that the swastika is left out of games more for financial reasons to avoid the game being banned in certain markets. I personally don't miss seeing it.

There is a class-action law suit in the US that addresses this issue. The plaintiff says that HD companies should be up front about exactly how much usable disk space you are getting, instead of listing how much is theoretically on the HD platters.

It's possible that your video chip is overheating. I would have a look at your video card fan to see if it is not full of dust etc. Also make sure you have good airflow around your video card. Also, turn off VPU recover in the advanced display options to see if that helps. Are you using the Overdrive overclocking function that comes with the ATI control panel? Anyhoo, I had a friend with a Radeon 7500 that did have a similar problem, and we could reproduce the problem and document it. In the end, it was still under warranty (3 years) so he sent it back to ATI and got a brand new on

I'm really happy for the Frans and the guys at 3D Gamers - it's nice they have got some financial benefit after putting in so much hard work over the years for gamers around the world. Nice to hear they will still be delivering free downloads to us without registering ... we'll see how long that lasts

Awesome, best news I've heard all day!

What I am wondering is why they included Cold Fear in the Clancy newsletter

Half Life 2 Ending.....YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING!
CR6 replied to Stalker_Zero's topic in Shooter games (FPS & TPS)
If you didn't like Half-Life 2's ending, make sure you don't play Halo 2 -
Nice find! I was impressed that SWAT 4 is shipping with mod tools out of the box, but BF2 does even better!

Another Lockdown interview at FileFront http://articles.filefront.com/Rainbow_Six_...;;/article.html Highlights from this interview include the revelation that "Rainbow Five" will make his first ever appearance in a Rainbow game ... Colonel Rocky Stanley (UK, ex-SAS), who appeared as Team Rainbow's Executive Officer in the the Rainbow Six novel finally makes his debut in the series. (A lot of people don't realize that the title "Rainbow Six" refers to the Commanding Officer of Team Rainbow, John Clark, and not to Team Rainbow itself.) One of the cooler screenshots:

Generally speaking, case fans are not exclusively made to be intake or exhaust. All you have to do is turn it over. There sometimes is an arrow on the side of the fan to indicate the direction of flow. Most computer cases now are made so you exhaust hot air created inside the case outside the back (through the power supply +/- a second exhaust fan), and intake cool air in the front bottom of the case. It would not be a good idea to turn the fan at the back of your case into a cool air intake fan, as it will disrupt the flow of air that is already created by your power supply to exhaust h

Agreed. This game is looking good based on the MP demo, trailer, and previews so far ... might have to pick this one up Kinda cool to rekindle the old Rogue Spear vs. SWAT 3 rivalry (who here still remembers that?) with this upcoming R6 Lockdown vs. SWAT 4 new-gen smackdown
-
If I'm not mistaken, you could do that with a shotgun in the original Rainbow Six. I also used to unload a MP5 clip onto a locked doorknob to open a door instead of using the lockpick kit

I haven't had any probs over here in N. America. When I type in "ghostrecon.com" into the URL address bar of my browser, it automatically defaults to http://www.ghostrecon.com/us/ You can also try http://www.ghostrecon.com/uk/

I saw that preview way back, but that statement is does not give too much detail about the engine: What I want to know is whether the R6-4 engine is based on the GR2 engine, or branched off from the original GR1 engine, or was developed from scratch, or licensed from another company. Red Storm has only developed one 3D shooter engine in-house from scratch, and it would be difficult (but not impossible) to develop a 2nd in-house that is not based on the one that has its roots in the original Rainbow Six. Here's the history of the development of RSE's in-house engine as I remember ...
