Hey, with ClearType being a feature of IE7 (which by the way is now available for "non-genuine" users which of course there aren't any of those people around here ... right? ) I found this cleartype tuner page - is this the same one you used Rocky? http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearT...uner/Step1.aspx

I've tried running XP without a swapfile too - there was a thread about it long ago Most things run fine, but certain apps like Photoshop will refuse to run on XP without a swapfile on your HD.

Dude, I'm sorry to say that you are giving some bad misinformation and advice. Viruses are worse than ever, and a REAL threat to home users. Hackers ARE interested in unsecured home users' computers to set up dummy terminals to distribute their pr0n or whatever (I had a friend whose broadband account was shut down because his computer was inadvertently distributing this) If you actually read what Dannik and I wrote, you can see why a software firewall is useful and important. What I said is depending on your surfing habits, you can possibly avoid using a software firewall (although I advise

It really boils down to your surfing and downloading habits. I know some people who just always visit the same safe websites, and never had a virus despite not having any anti-virus installed, and others whose computers are so infested with spyware (because they innocently downloaded some screensaver) that the only cure is a fresh reinstallation of Windows. Dannik is right that technically, a software firewall+hardware firewall (ie. router) is optimal, and better than hardware firewall alone because a software firewall is the only thing that will tell you that malware has been installed

Sweet Whisper! Thanks for the tip! Halo 2 was one of the few Xbox games I ever actually completed (that and GR2 Xbox) as I usually wait til the PC version to come out. Funny thing is there was no YouTube when Halo 2 came out ... I must admit I checked out YouTube for the ending of Halo 3 on Legendary (which I'll never be able to get through anyway ) since at the rate I'm playing I probably won't finish Halo 3 til after Christmas.

! Congratulations - I don't think you'll regret it. I'd ask Roco for his recommendations what mobo to go with it. I've only had experience with the Intel 965/975, and they are solid. However, the P35 chipset is more "future proof" and nVidia's 680i seems to be a favorite for hardcore gamers (and an obvious choice if you go SLI)

Ah ha, I see ... if you really want to save, perhaps you can just replace the mobo, cpu, ram and video card. I really didn't think I'd get a quad this year either, but since I've had a few buddies that got one, and the price has come down so much, I figure I might as well go for that if I'm upgrading my P4 3.4GHz gaming rig. It's looking like pretty much all the higher-end gaming systems and benchmarks in the next year will be based on quad-core CPUs.

Actually, it's probably a good thing. You got rid of the old overheated and noisy version, and down the road if you want you can get the newer version of the 360 with the die shrink, better cooling, with HDMI (and maybe HD-DVD built in), and larger 120GB HD. I wish I got the Elite this year instead of the reg. version last year. I just read an article today where Bungie said that Halo 4 is not in development. That's impressive if MS doesn't push Bungie to make a Halo 4 right away. Initial estimates for first day sales are $170million, and it will be interesting to see if M$ truly lets

I had some time last night to play through the first level of Halo 3 and glad to say it didn't disappoint! First thing was I was blown away by the beautiful jungle foilage of the first level and detail on Master Chief's armor, all running very smoothly (less choppy than GRAW and R6 Vegas - turns out reports today that Halo 3 runs natively at 640p that may explain why) http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-70713.aspx The best thing a bout the Halo series is that it's so easy to pick up, and challenging enough to keep interest while at the same time not being hard enough to be frustrating and repe

Here's a rough explanation why (anyone can feel free to add their 2 cents) When DDR2 first came out, it was at DDR2-400=PC2-3200. Most folks back then didn't think DDR1 would go over DDR400, but the yields were so good with low timings, and the manufacturing process was very mature to keep prices down, that DDR1 stayed on the market much longer than anticipated. Chipset/mobo maker stuck with DDR1 400 instead of the much more expensive DDR2 400, so you really didn't see people buying DDR2 until it hit 533MHz It's only when DDR2 production ramped up and prices dropped when DDR1 kinda faded

Yahoo! A new rig coming! With all the new Unreal engine based games coming out that will take advantage of mult-cores, I'd seriously consider paying the $50 more and getting a Q6600 quad core these days, especially since the last price drop. If you are o/c'ing, I have a friend who easily got his Q6600 to 3.2GHz with a good 3rd party cooling fan (and P35 based chipset mobo) If you still want a dual core, I think the E6750's are actually cheaper than the E6600, and you get 1.6GHz faster with 1333MHz FSB If you're in the market for a new sound card, the X-Fi really rocks. I guess

There's a big diff between the X1950 Pro, GT, XT, XTX etc. So please clarify which card you have and what brand - different companies use different clock speeds etc.

Cool! Thanks for the info Dan I have saves for SC1&2 PC, that's it ....

Well, I wasn't planning to pick up Halo 3 on launch day (although I would definitely get it eventually), but I happened to be in Wal-Mart yesterday a.m. and they had a whole bunch in stock. So I figured I'd contribute to Microsoft's record-breaking launch day profit stats LOL I decided to get the Collector's Edition in the tin because it has a very cool segment with Sgt. Johnson to help set up your AV system. Unfortunately, like the reports said, my Halo 3 game disc was loose in the tin box and it had a small scratch, but nothing fatal. I actually haven't had time to fire up the game yet

You can download PS3 saves from your PC?

Just bought the PC version of NHL08 today - no time to install it yet - main thing is I'm hoping the Xbox 360 controller will work with it this year!

Nice. What temp monitoring software are you using? Also, if you don't mind, could you post what temps you get in your BIOS?

What you need to know is do NOT get XP x64. If you want a 64-bit OS, get Vista Ultimate 64-bit. It appears Microsoft is throwing more manpower at getting Vista 64-bit drivers than for XP. Skim this forum for a few other threads on this issue If you have an Intel CPU/mobo chipset, Intel does have 64-bit drivers on their website, so that's not an issue. The issue will be with your old printer, webcam, etc.

I'm not sure who here hates AMD ... I think a large number of people here were running Athlon 64/x2's before the Core 2 came out. At that time AMD was really kicking the Pentium 4's butt. But now with the price drops with Core 2's and performance difference, there isn't much question that Intel has regained the lead in price/performance Anyhoo, I think you will like this article: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20070919235312.html

Hmm ... haven't heard this one. I googled around and didn't come up with anything solid. I just remember the reports about DDR2 memory going ball-grid array The new LGA CPUs almost look like little "cups" - would make sense to make the pins like balls to prevent bending. Wonder why it's not done??

Get him a DVD burner as a 2nd optical drive in addition to the DVD ROM - it's like $30

If it's a SATA drive, there is no "master" or "slave" Master/slave only applies to IDE drives So if you have one IDE drive and one SATA drive, you don't have to worry about setting master/slave relationship, except your single IDE drive's jumper should be set to master at all times If you want your IDE to be your boot drive, copy all your files from youre IDE to your SATA, then just reformat and reinstall XP on your IDE. Your SATA drive can just become a data drive
