  1. Actually, a "movie" version of Shenmue 1 came out with Shenmue II (which I got bundled with my Xbox 1).

Yep, Shenmue II came with an extra DVD where the whole of the first game was played through filmed as a movie.

  2. Lots of chatter on the 'net about Bill Gates saying the successor to Vista will be out next year, not in 2010 as originally planned. Code named Windows 7, it looks like they are trying to avoid the booboos of Vista's launch and anti-climactic SP1 release.

Personally, I am enjoying using Vista, lots of good features, but it looks like Vista may not even last another year - although you can hardly compare it to the piece of junk that was Windows Me, Vista likely will last just as long.

In the meantime, XP is getting a 2nd life as the OS of choice on all these low-cost low-power 'net laptops, as Vista is too resource intensive to be used by them.

So, do we all want another refresh of Windows so soon?

  3. anyone else enjoy Vista more now with the release of SP1?

I use both Vista Home Premium (wife and kids) and Ultimate (for myself) on a regular basis, and I've had SP1 installed on the Home Premium for a week (used the standalone installer). Honestly, I can't tell any difference for what I do since SP1 was installed

Funny enough, we were having probs with one of my kids' games (Lego Star Wars) in Vista (crashing), and since SP1 there was one software compatibility update that came out that fixed compatiblity with a whole bunch of software including that one!

I agree that for ease of viewing/organizing photos/video etc, Vista beats XP in terms of usability.

I personally like Vista, but I wouldn't recommend anyone happily running XP right now to upgrade to Vista.

  4. The phenomenon that is the spontaneous outpouring of support everytime one of our fallen soldiers comes home along this stretch of Highway 401 (recently officially adopting the name "Highway of Heroes") definitely shows the average Canadian holds our Armed Forces in high esteem. It's really the least we can do to honor their sacrifice.

Although I am not an expert by any means regarding Canada's military affairs, and I don't mean to start any political discussion, but I figured I'd type up a little editorial:

Canada's military definitely has had its share of troubles before our deployment in Afghanistan. Although we have a proudn and outstanding military tradition as seen in WWII and Korea, the Canadian Forces has had poor support from the 1960's-90's from our government who would rather depend on the US for our national security - trying to make do with chronic shortages, old outdated equipment and a shoestring budget.

Our government and media seem to have been more than happy relegating the role of the Canadian Forces to "peacekeeping" which although sounds good on paper, was to say the least a very frustrating exercise in places like Bosnia and Rwanda. Afghanistan has been a real wake up call that Canadians need to be more involved in combat operations - something that I think most regular Canadians support, but unfortunately many politicians play politics with.

Glad to say that our current Prime Minister Stephen Harper definitely has shown welcome support for our Forces, not just for our troops on the ground, but actually bolstering spending on large ticket items like new ships, tanks etc. (Yes, we are currently leasing modern Leopard tanks from Germany as our old versions didn't even have air-conditioning) Harper is even trying to get a more pronounced Canadian military presence in the Arctic which has recently seen more activity from the Russians (perhaps trying to stake a claim to possible rich resources under the polar ice cap)

  5. Thing is, I think Lockdown was a good game and would have had a lot of potential if the multiplayer wasn't broken (ie. they didn't force us to use Ubi.com - by the time the patch came out that fixed it no one was playing it anymore) and if they opened it up to modding

I guess the new RSE site only lists their games that sold well.

  6. Not sure if this has been posted anywhere else, but RSE has a Facebook page.

I found it after a fan pointed out to me that a link at R6 Retreat to the official R6 Lockdown site is now dead. Ubi has pulled all traces of Lockdown from their R6 site, and strangely there is not even a mention that RSE worked on Lockdown on RSE's official new site. Are they that embarassed about it? :(

Anyways, that's where I found their link to their Facebook site, as well as a good interview here:

    http://www.wral.com/business/local_tech_wi.../story/2547483/

We’re currently in the development cycle for our next big game, but it’s too early in the process for us to be showing anything off – or letting anyone know what we’re working on.
  7. Ahh i misunderstood the question. 266mhz ram is what you want. DDR does 2 per clock cycle so 266x2 = 533

Actually, that SiS mobo doesn't do dual-channel. So the P4 will be "supported" at 533FSB, but in actuality the real FSB will be 266MHz.

That was the case with most early P4s. Even though they could run at 400FSB with Rambus RDRAM, only DDR266/333 was available early on for the majority of folks who used DDR RAM with the Intel 845D motherboards.

So in the end, when upgrading old systems, you have to be pretty careful and do your homework (e.g. if the voltage of your RAM doesn't work with the motherboard etc). Hopefully where-ever you buy stuff will take returns.

Personally, I find Crucial is a good place to get legacy RAM, and you can use their tool to find out which of their RAM is right for your mobo

    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp...%20%28651M-L%29

Interestingly, they guarantee their DDR400 RAM will work with the mobo.

  8. I will be buying the chip and the memory at the same time. I want to run it at 533. MSI 651M-L is the motherboard she has with a Celeron already on it. I want to upgrade it to the Northwood listed above and get the right RAM to go with it at the same time.

A ha, I see what you mean now. I checked this page and it appears that your mom's SiS chipset does NOT support Dual Channel

    http://www.asisupport.com/p4_chipset_info.htm

So ... basically what that means is that even though your P4 2.8 CPU could run at 533FSB, you will never be able to run the CPU at its full potential as the max FSB you can run it at is limited to 333MHz because your motherboard's chipset that only supports up to 333MHz FSB as below:

    Chipset

    • SIS® 651 Chipset

    - High performance host interface 400/533MHz

    - Support 64-bit high performance DDR333/DDR266/DDR200 memory controller

If I were you, I'd get DDR266 memory if possible, as it runs at half the FSB speed of the CPU. There is a chance that the mix of timings would be kinda funny mixing a 533FSB CPU with DDR333, but I'm just guessing.

That, and the fact if your mom's using the computer, she won't be able to tell any appreciable diff between DDR266 vs DDR333 performance.

  9. Here is a question that is partially on topic. Has anyone tried windows live one care? Granted not free but does have a 90 day trial. I have a few customers using it, especially with vista and it seems good but in my testing lol i had no infection come through. It protects up to 3 pc's for 39-49.00 a year, and made by MS. Just curious. It's hard for me to recommend it though unless i see it work. (it also adds help for home users for sharing printers, one place backup and one computer can manage all 3)

I can answer your question. Last year, I installed OneCare v1.5 on both my home network (with XP and Vista) and a charitable organization's network (XP only) which I maintain. I also installed it on 2 friend's home systems.

I previously had been using MacAfee but with v10 they started to sell VirusScan as a "suite" with other components which I really didn't want. I thought the benefits of OneCare would be that it's made by MS so it should run well with XP (haha, should have known better than to trust anything by MS). I even stuck it out until it upgraded to v2.0 earlier this year.

After one year of using it, I have decided not to use it anymore or recommend it to anyone. Why?

    - Once you install it, you cannot turn it off unless you uninstall the program. With MacAfee, I occasionally wanted to turn off the VirusScan if it was conflicting with another program etc, and I had that option, but with OneCare you can't

    - They actually made it TOO simple, and not as configurable as other anti-Virus programs. If it gave a "warning" it often wasn't specific enough what exactly the problem was. It just gave you a button to click to "fix the problem" and sometimes that didn't work.

    - Another frustrating thing was after a major update, it would reset the printer sharing properties, and the staff would complain they couldn't print from the network printer. It was an easy fix if you knew to reset the printer sharing option in OneCare, but it was dumb that OneCare didn't keep the previous settings before it updated.

    - For some reason, when you install OneCare, it has it's own anti-spyware and automatically disables Windows Defender that is in Vista. I thought this was wierd as they are both MS products. Why wouldn't MS just keep Defender as part of OneCare??? Boggles my mind, but I figure it must be 2 different dev teams

    - It does have a neat feature where you can set one system as the "hub" PC which monitors 2 other PCs (make sure they have been updated etc), but with 6 systems in the network I maintain, I wish one 1 hub PC could monitor the other 5. Instead, I have to have 2 hub PCs.

    - There is a backup feature that has potential (back up computers over a network) but there is no config options to specify if it will totally overwrite the previous backup or make a whole new file (like the Mac's TimeMachine), so I haven't bothered using it.

    - Last spring the secretary downloaded some program to save Youtube videos, and got a trojan that infected a total of 3 computers on the network (passed around through a USB drive actually). OneCare was NOT able to delete it or contain it. Neither did AVG. MacAfee could only contain it. In the end, I ran 2 other anti-virus programs (Kaspersky and NOD32) that did successfully delete it. (Eventually reformatted all the PCs after disinfecting all the HDs)

So those are a few comments off the top of my head. I would say if someone is a "low-risk" user - i.e. doesn't tend to surf/download any dangerous sites/material, then OneCare may be adequate. But if it's a computer that tends to get heavy use by people who may download dangerous stuff, then better stick to a more mature security suite.

  10. I installed it for a few customers. Just more or less seemed to be all the updates rolled up. I see IE7 is also in it, which the beta didn't have and could mess a not patched computer up.

Actually, SP3 does not install IE7. I really wish it did. (Also wish SP3 would have auto-installed WMP11 and updated DX9c)

From what I have read, SP3 has patches for both IE6 and IE7, so if you are still running IE6, it will patch your IE6. If you have upgraded to IE7, it will patch your IE7, but it will not install IE7.

  11. $2000 can go a long way these days, the reason I say that is I have the parts for a high-end system that is still waiting in my living room waiting to be built that including a quad-core Q6600 CPU, P35 mobo, Lian-Li aluminum case, 8800GTX and it cost me $1600

    A few points:

    - I'd suggest a quad-core CPU as you will benefit from one playing upcoming games such as those based on the Unreal Engine that will use all 4 cores. The Q6600 costs actually less than some of the new E8xxx series dual-cores

    - Go for a SATA DVD burner. No point going with any IDE-based drives anymore these days

    - Most mobos these days have built-in hi-def audio chips that are likely as good as the old SB Audigy. I do have a X-Fi Gamer on an older rig and it is worth the extra money if you have it to spend - consider getting the newer PCI-E version instead of the old PCI version.

  12. Bleh 80mm. It's hard to get them quiet compated to 120 which moves the same amount of air with way less rpm.

Exactly, if you want quiet, then you need a bigger fan. If that is not physically possible for your case, then see if your mobo supports setting the speed of the fans and get 80mm fans that connect directly to your mobo (instead of the fans with the molex connector that attach to your PSU)

  13. Wow, the above link was really busy this weekend. I had to wait a long time for that page to load

Also, SP3 is starting to show up as an option for XP auto-updates

Anyways, I downloaded the full install .exe and installed it on a two computers that I regularly maintain for other people, and installation went fine, and no obv. performance probs/driver issues etc.

I think the security updates in SP3 (that are not otherwise available in the auto-update patches) are pretty small improvements, and won't be obvious to most folks

  14. If you need to install it on other PCs or re-install at some stage, use the "customized" option.

At step 4 or 5 you can uncheck the toolbar installation.

Yup, that's what I did on 2 systems so far and no unwanted toolbar

Have you guys noticed that AVG 8 scans all the links in a Google search result webpage and tells you if the link is safe? I wonder how it manages to incorporate that into the webpages source code.

  15. Hey, I'm getting two special edition boxed sets of the GR series shipped for Canada to Scotland this month!

Oh yeah! I just saw some at Future Shop, so yes, you can still get brand-new GR1 in Canada.

Here's the online link, but like pagey said, they can't get rid of their stock so look for discounts

    http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetai...test%5Fcookie=1

BTW, there is NO DVD edition of GR1. The original game and 2 expansion packs all shipped on CDs. GRAW1 came out on DVD though.

  16. I get the distinct feeling that sly ###### has something huge up his sleeve. Could it be that we could get the chance to play all of MGS1 on the MGS4 engine via dream sequences? With the ability to unlock the full version after MGS4 completion? Or only parts. Either way it is a very intriguining possibility.

    :o:o:drool:

I still have very fond memories playing MGS1 on the PSX with my cousins, then finally completing the whole thing in the Microsoft published PC version (which I actually wrote a review for way back when)

I am now kicking myself for not getting the Twin Snakes version for NGC

I haven't got a PS3 (yet ... it's looking like a sound investment to me now that Blu-Ray has won the HD war). If there's any game I would purchase the system for, it's MGS4.
