True but a new Ghost Recon game has been announced to arrive before April 2010. Which in my book is early 2010, which is the same as Mass Effect 2. So to me they are comparable.
After many years following the GR franchise, it's getting pretty obvious over the past several years that Ubi brass has an unstated policy implemented for blackout of info on a title until basically they want you to know about it.
The rationale behind exactly why they are doing this because they don't want to distract the limelight from current titles or they just don't hire enough PR staff is something we fans will never know, and complaints from us here won't change this policy.
Personally, I think Ubi could learn from other game companies that do a much better job communicating with their fanbase and giving out bits of info to keep up fan interest between titles, but I'm not holding my breath ...
-
Well I'm one of the Ex-RedStorm folks now working on this game. Of course I can't say anything that the PR guys haven't said but have definitely seen some mixed reactions from different groups. All I can say is that a lot of people have been jumping to conclusions and should take the game for what it's worth when we release more information on it.
Hi Pat! Good to see you posting again on these forums

Sounds like you guys are working on a winner here. Looking forward to hearing more info on it. (Hopefully your PR guys know how to do a better job than Ubi
)With regards to the regenerative health, I'd be curious what the consultants (Marines) on the game think about it. There's always a fine balance between gameplay and realism.

Congrats on the new rig WK! What are you playing on it so far?
Also do you have plans to upgrade your monitor? I have a friend who has a computer store and still have some gamers coming in looking for old CRTs because of the better refresh rates
I know I recommended getting a 24" LCD, but I found with some newer games running them at native 1920x1200 res with 4x+ AA and AF turned on slow down the framerates, so perhaps a 20-22" with 1680x1050 res is the best compromise ...

Only individual I know on these boards (or anywhere so far for that matter) with an i7 so far is WK - ask him for his first-hand experience

Video Game Pioneer Atomic Games Returns to Make History Yet AgainRALEIGH, NC – March 10, 2009
Twenty years after pioneering the Historical Action video game category, Atomic Games is back. After working for three years behind a shroud of secrecy, the company is announcing today that it has returned to the video game sector to usher in a new breed of Historical Action video games.
Atomic was quietly re-formed in 2006 by bringing together co-founders of Red Storm Entertainment with experienced talent from Bungie, Activision and Electronic Arts. Since then, the company has created a proprietary game engine for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Macintosh and Windows, and its 75-person team is now developing an innovative 3D shooter for one of the world’s top 5 video game publishers.
“What’s always made Atomic unique is the way it translates real-life tactics and events into new kinds of games,†according to Peter Tamte, president of the new Atomic. Adds Keith Zabaloui, who founded Atomic in 1989, “Plus, the activities and missions that occurred in real life often offer more interesting content than anything someone could have made up.â€
One of the top developers of its time, Atomic garnered a “Game of the Year†award for its very first game, “V for Victory,†and went on to develop 14 commercial video games, plus a variety of realistic training simulations that are in use today by military and intelligence organizations around the world.
Atomic is best known for “Close Combat,†which helped launch the real-time strategy genre in the early 1990s. The game sold over 1.2 million units and was named one of the “50 Best Games Ever†by PC Gamer in 1998, as well as one of the “Top 10 Strategy Games of All Time†in 2004 by Gamespy.
About Atomic Games
Headquartered in Raleigh, NC, Atomic Games is a video game development studio pioneering new kinds of Historical Action video games. Atomic is owned by a variety of employees and investors, including In-Q-Tel, a private venture capital firm funded by the United States Central Intelligence Agency. More information about Atomic is available at www.atomic.com.

Thanks for the reply Pave! Sounds like a great setup.
I actually don't watch a lot of TV, so I still haven't upgraded our old CRT for the family. My only HD screens at home are computer monitors, so if I ever get into Blu-Ray it will probably be on my computer first

-
Just curious if anyone here has a Blu-Ray drive for their PC and what's your setup and experience like? (video card HDMI, what kind of monitor you use, etc)

So ... IE8 has been out for a week or so. Anyone here try it yet? Any probs?
I tried it in the Windows 7 Beta and was underwhelmed
I just tried to install it in an older XP computer (with all the updates) and keep getting errors when I try to install the Adobe Flash plugin
I would advise holding off on IE8 for the time being ...

Thanks to both of you for your comments!
I finally dusted off my 360 and dloaded Halo Wars. Very nice looking but definitely simplistic compared to PC RTS's. Very interesting how they made the various new units and Covenant and UNSC buildings. Had a fun time with both single player (very linear) and the 1 vs 1 skirmish.
What made me roll the eyes a bit was after my Xbox live was updated, there are these new characters you need to chose - bascially MS copying Nintendo's Mii's

Cool, nice find. I wonder who are the 20 RSE employees mentioned here:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22649
Red Storm, best known for developing Tom Clancy's titles for Ubisoft, has a strong spiritual presence at the new Atomic: Benito was executive producer on the original Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, studio manager John Farnsworth managed Red Storm, and around 20 former Red Storm developers joined up. -
WK, if you are going to spend some extra coin on a Falcon system, I'd suggest you seriously consider going for a 24" in monitor. I have a ViewSonic 22" at home (1680x1050 res) and a Dell Ultrasharp 24" at work (1920x1200 res) and the extra 2 inches make a big difference.
Also, with a 24" you can properly view 1080p on your computer, and it's nice to have 1200 vertical pixels to do image editing etc.
You probably won't buy another monitor for years, so I would argue a larger screen is worth the extra funds.
If you don't go for a 24", I wouldn't recommend you settle for less than a 22"

Wow!!! That is some impressive packaging!

I think Ikea is great value compared to years ago, and have quite a bit of Ikea furniture at home and the office nowadays.
I really like their new Besta series for storage
-
The Indeo codec used to be given away free, but after awhile they started charging for it. Not sure what its status is now.
-
WK, why don't you try to price out the same parts individually and I'll bet you save a cool $1K at least
The only things these days boutique system builders like Falcon may be able to do better are cabling/water cooling/over-clocking which it doesn't seem your's is o/c'd
What are your current rig specs? If you have a Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz or greater, I wouldn't bother upgrading now unless there is some real system hog game you want to play.
BTW, I just was at Ikea and they had a sale for 10 meatball special with potatoes and gravy for $2.99

I'm almost reluctant to post this, but in the interests of impartiality LOL...

Good balanced reporting Rocky!
Check out Dave Perry's blog which has the actual table the article refers to
http://www.dperry.com/archives/news/dp_blog/most_least_cons/
Ubi only has 4 titles in the "A" category (wonder which ones?) and 75 in the "F"
Metacritic doesn't seem to be an exact scientific way of calculating scores. I'm confounded why the gaming industry puts so much weight on the score.

Do not get WinXP 64 bit. I have it and never use it. It is likely MS support for it will stop long before support for the 32-bit verison.
I'd suggest either XP 32 bit or Vista 64-bit.

Besides a small handful of studios like Blizzard and id, most publishers don't make Mac versions. All previous Mac versions of Ubi games were ported by 3rd party publishers like Aspyr or MacSoft, usually a year or more after the PC version came out.
-
Anyone download and try this out yet? I'm curious what you think of the gamepad controls for an RTS.
I need to hook up my 360 again but unfortunately gaming is a bit low on the priority list now, but I'll get around to it ...

If I recall correctly, go to the GR2 website, chose to listen to all 3 of the tracks from the game. Once you've listened to all 3, check your browser cache and you've automatically downloaded the mp3's of all the tracks.

Also, check out Bill Brown's site to see if he has uploaded tracks from the game.

I was looking for a thread to discuss this interview so I'm glad you started this thread WK. Thanks to you and John for the great read!
Honestly, every day is a struggle, but I'll continue to fight until the last bullet and last breath... or until my family cannot put food on the table. Having passion for something is a tough thing to overcome.
Hang in there John! A tanking economy sure does limit opportunities but it doesn't negate the fact that you have a great team working with you and great ideas that really appeal to a good chunk of the gaming population.

Anyone else here grow up watching the G.I. Joe cartoon and collecting the action figures? Looks like Hasbro green-lighted a "mature" animated version (with blood and dead Joes) that's worth a look for a trip down memory lane ...
US residents can watch it on AdultSwim.com, but for all of us outside the US there's always YouTube:
