I have two systems in my house with DSL. My inexpensive approach was to buy a hub. Since I already had access to nics (network cards 3coms as a matter of fact) all I did was hook my modem up to the uplink port on the hub. The pc's are in then in turn (with any patch cable you can buy at any electronic store) connected to the hub. The dial up software, provided by my provider, is installed on both systems. Both pc's can dial out individually. One other thing I do use a firewall program to keep the amatures out, the pro's can get into anything they want, I would advise the same. Also D-Link does offer some good home based routers which come with firewall protection.

In looking at another web page that I check out for information, www.military.com, I came across this little tidbit of information. It looks like one more step has been taken in preparation to war. The following comes from the above mentioned website. (Hope I am not breaking any forum rules here).
U.S. Troops In Northern Iraq
United Press International
January 29, 2003
WASHINGTON - A small number of U.S. troops have been inserted in northern Iraq, Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed Wednesday.
Myers declined to specify the number of soldiers but called it an "insignificant" number.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld pointed out that the word "insignificant" referred to the size of the total force in northern Iraq, not to the individuals involved. The troops, most likely special operations forces, are presumably embedded with Kurdish military units who would be relied on to help fight the northern front near Turkey if the United States invades Iraq.
Military and intelligence officials have acknowledged privately that CIA officers are working with Kurdish factions, but Myers statement was the first time the Pentagon publicly confirmed their presence.
Small numbers of Special Forces soldiers were instrumental in organizing, equipping and training Afghan rebel forces, and only a few hundred were necessary to guide the Northern Alliance to victory over the Taliban.
Also Wednesday, the Pentagon announced that it is mobilizing an additional 15,718 reservists, bringing the total number of citizen soldiers currently activated to 94,624, one of the highest levels since shortly after Sept. 11, 2001.
The Coast Guard announced Wednesday it is dispatching eight cutters with roughly 600 people to the Persian Gulf region. Myers said their mission will be port protection for the growing armada of U.S. warships in the area. There are at least four aircraft carrier battle groups in the region, with roughly 15 ships per group.
The Coast Guard will help protect large ships while in port from being attacked the way the USS Cole was on October 2000. That suicide bombing in port in Yemen claimed 17 sailors' lives.

I have to agree with killa on this one as well. Especially if you are sniping. Depending on the map getting that perfect sniping position can be difficult at best. What the diligent sniper has to be careful of is tunnel vision. With a little luck the opposing team can pounce on that. In the grander scheme of things when I play against someone who uses the "camping tactic" exclusively, my step son does this, I find it very challenging to find a point of attack to take him out. The little ######...
I feel if I can ferret him out and smoke him I look at him and make a comment like "thought you were smart didn't ya". In the end we both understand that it is a game and it is fun. I know, I know I should be shot for saying such things. Stout Hearts

In taking part in a few other threads on different posts concerning the potential of the up coming conflict with Iraq, I thought it might be time to remember what history teaches about such things.
Several people I have talked to, including those that do not participate on this forum, seem to think that with Saddam we should give him yet one more chance. When I hear this I am struck by the simularities between the Pre-World War II era and September 1939. Prior to the full outbreak of World War II the attitude was appeasement. The world thought that they should give into Hitler, the maniac from Austria himself, rather than risk war. It took the will and the nerve of Winston Churchill to say enough is enough.
Churchill knew that like any other bully as long as you give into demands of a tyrannical dictator the demands will keep coming. Saddam is even now making demands of the UN to guarntee his supposed full co-operation. With such demands as "lift the sanctions then we can talk about full co-operation." I can only imagine the gymnastic performances Sir Winston Churchill is performing in his grave. If he would have been alive 1991 and Prime Minister of England we wouldn't be having this discussion right now. He would have looked to the US for help and he would have removed Saddam from power. When his goal was to stop Hitler it wasn't just to push German troops back across into Germany and out of such places as the Rhineland, France, Poland, Austria/Hungry and so on. He knew then that the only way to ensure the peace was to remove Hitler from power by utterly defeating him.
With Saddam the goal should be the same. What's that you ask? What about those that replace him? It's simple, give the Iraqi people the choice of more than one person on a ballet and you will find that with freedom the people of Iraq will make the choice for peace. Any government that replaces Saddam will only have to look to thier recent past to see what will be accepted by the world and what won't. Ask yourself this. When was the last time Germany started a war since the end of World War II?
I am not saying that in this situation that war is the only solution but the world has tried everything else. To say that diplomacy hasn't been given enough of a chance I think is a mistake. Diplomacy hasn't worked for over 12 years. We owe a lot to former world leaders like Winston Churchill who have stood up to oppression and bullies and said "NO MORE".
Winston Churchill said something a long time ago about the Battle of Britian. In these few simple words he tried to sum up the gratitude of Britian to it's air force. But I think it means more than that. It is what is in my mind when I thank a veteran for his or her sacriface to ensure my freedom. The quote is as follows and if I have any part of it wrong please correct me. As you read this quote please remember that the very freedoms that we enjoy today were secured with the blood of many brave men and women who gave thier lives for what they believed in.
"Never before in the annuals of human history has so much been owed by so many to so few"

@the_Slink I had a hard time getting through your post because I haven't quite gotten the knack of running 5 windows on gr.net at the sametime yet. Althought I have gotten good with responding in three different forum threads at once.

You know you are playing too much GR when:
You replace your windows start up sound with the GR theme song.
Your wife tells you dinner is ready and you tell her you have to wait for reinforcements to arrive.

@budgie
For the most part, if not all, I have to say well put budgie. Although when it comes to the China and Taiwan situation I don't know if the nuke card would deter the US from interferring. However this thread isn't about that situation although that topic could end up being very interesting.
But all in all that was well thought out and well put.@firefly2442
What you are referring to during the Cold War era is MAD or Mutually Assured Destruction. Nuclear weapons then only kept a major covential war from starting becuase it was known that the several Soviet Battle Doctrines called for the use of nuclear weapons in both strategic and tatical forms as well as the use of chemical weapons. Depending on the situation of course.
As Budgie so aptly pointed out, the US and other nuclear capable powers, of the cold war era, keep their nukes as a deterrent against third world countries. However this deterrent is indeed lost on terrorist groups like Al-Queda (not sure if that is spelled right).
But like I said in my earlier post when it comes to retaliation at Iraq with the use of nukes, that is a little more difficult to do when the US is stating one of the reasons to go into Iraq is to free the Iraqi people. This is one of those times that I am glad I am not in the position where I would have to be the one to decide on whether or not to use nukes.

My only real problem with the weapon moddeling has been with the impact effect of weapons like the .308 and the .50 cal. Manicbikerdudes mod is neat to use from time to time but when my wife and I play, we both play as snipers, we have a accuracy contest in co-op mode. When using his modifications to the M82 you shots are not counted because the game thinks you are killing everyone with a gernade launcher. I am currently trying to either find a mod that doesnt do this while keeping realistic effects and/or making one of my own. I won't be satisfied until I see a bad guy get at least knocked off of his feet from a shot from beloved M82.

Very intersting topic. Very intersting responses. Kudos brothers! I fear a long-term commitment. Not to redirect the flow of this but what do you think? My oldest son is now 16
Signed worried Daddy
HiLandR
In terms of a long-term commitment with Iraq I don't think you will have to worry there. (The reason I say I don't think is because I don't have that infamous crystal ball) I believe that not only will Iraq's military fold under any US/UK led invasion but also so will the current Iraqi government.
As far as for the grander "war on terrorism", well again the only worry there is if your son decides that the thing for him to do is to defend not only the principles of the United States but the general principle of freedom, by serving in a branch of the US military.
For me, having decided when I was only 17 to enlist in the US Navy, there was no more a noble cause than that. In case you care or are wondering I served from 1985-1988 under perhaps one of the, this of course is my own personal view, greatest presidents of all time. Believe me though everytime my ship sailed in the back of my mind I couldn't help but wonder if there was a soviet sub out there.
While I worry for all the men and women in the armed forces I am also proud of what they do. And I know that each night I can sleep at least a better knowing that I am free of tyranny.

How about starting up a petition? Don't know if it will work as I have found UBI not to be very end user friendly. But for this commercial whatever it takes you know.

@Stalker_Zero No actually I haven't. I have only recently been using mods in the game and I just recently started messing around with the weapons. Is what you are talking about available on this site? I looked breifly and didn't find it.
@snakebite1967 I have you added on my list I will be looking forward to catching you on MSN. Thanks a bunch

If me memory serves me correctly the only purpose those balloons had was to prevent air attacks. The same idea was used during the Battle of Britian. I can't say for sure, as my memory seems to be failing me in this the wee hour of the morning, but the thought was it would keep the planes at higher altitudes and there by making it harder to hit their targets. As we are well aware during the second world war there was no such thing as smart weapons and carpet bombing was the general rule of thumb. Precision bombing, or low level bomb runs and dive bombing itself, was in it's infant stages at the time. The balloons were unmanned so they would have been useless for looking out for marauding u-boats. Sorry bluntobject, but if you believe or know me to be wrong could you post were I might find the info you are getting? That is the only part of your post I can almost positively disagree with you on.

While the movie isn't directly about special forces what about Clear and Present Danger? Having both read the book, long before the movie came out, and having seen the movie IMO, that the special forces unit in the story closely resembles the group we know and love.

Here is my two cents on the subject of a hypothectial first use of a WMD by the current Iraqi regime.
No one really, in their right mind, wants to use nukes. Certainately none in the military. It is a well known fact that there are no winners only losers when nukes are used. I can not even begin to think of a good way in which they could be used in a conflict with Iraq. However, it won't just be US forces involved if Iraq is invaded. So there is another dynamic to consider. What of the UK policy on the subject?
Additionally, if the US and UK and whoever else decides to side with those two go ahead and attack Iraq without UN approval and Iraq uses chemical weapons then that will prove that the invasion was warrented in the first place.

@badkarma,
On the subject of racial profiling- Kudo's. KUDOS I say. Having the opportunity to serve in the law enforcement field and having a father who was a police officer for several years I can say that you are 100% correct in what you said on this subject.
To expand on what you said about Good and Evil I would add, that a person's actions will be defined by another as good or evil based on another's beliefs. Even if you were to take the "God of Christianity" as Fusaki put it, and just go with a basic principle of what constitutes good and evil is "subjective" like you said. What the Taliban considered good I myself would consider evil.
@Fusaki,
It is human nature to judge others. This doesn't make it right but that is what happens. And if we take Jesus' admonishment to "judge not" literally then we wouldn't have a court system in the free world. I could go into a whole debate with you on this subject but I don't believe that I should under this thread.

During the Christmas shopping season I saw a commercial, just once, for Ghost Recon. It appeared to be a cross between in game clips and live actors. Did anyone else see this commercial. Does anyone know if it's avaiable for download? If so where?

I am looking to increase the amount of recoil demonstrated by my M82. The recoil number, in the .gun file, is now at 100. Am I correct in assuming that if I increase this number so will the recoil?
Also if I get it done in time and you would like it for your combined weapons mod I will donate my work to that effort 300mag. Of course I want to get cammo on it first and see if I can increase it's impact on enemy soliders...

If I don't get it done in time use the idea for your mod. I am sure I am not the only one in love with this sniper rifle/cannon. Before you mention it I tried MaNiaC Biker Dude's remake and while I enjoyed it for a short time I found myself wanting something slightly toned down and something that would reflect accurate %'s on the after action screen.

@yodasplat
for his comments on "Isn't it obvious why he's doing it? To detract from the economic recession". While I may not agree with your assessment of President Bush, I do agree with you that this is about "detracting from the economic recession."
As far as President Bush's motives I for one cannot say for certain that he may or may not have other reasons for going after Saddam either (I honestly don't think anyone can), however look at the Iraqi situation this way. If you were a parent, and for those on this forum that are you will understand best what I am talking about, how long would you continue to say to your child "stop doing that or else" before you would commit to the or else? The UN and indeed most of the world have been telling Saddam since 1991 "give up all of your WMD's or else". And as Hans Blix said today in his report to the UN, Iraq appears to still have Chemicial Weapons which he is not suppose to have. If the world keeps saying to Saddam "or else" nothing will ever change. The world and the UN has allowed him to thumb his nose long enough at everyone.
President Bush may have "just woke up one morning" with a hard on for Saddam but it's about time someone did. Has everyone that is against action against Iraq forgotten that Saddam threw the last team of weapons inspectors out? If I am not mistaken that was in 1998.
As far as the Palastinian issue. Don't forget that Israel wasn't even a state until 1946. When with the UN's blessing it went into what was Palestine and took it over by force. I am open to be corrected on this if I am wrong but as I remember my history, this is what I was taught oh so many years ago in highschool, that is how Israel became a state. That on the other hand does not give the Palestinians or anyone else for that matter to purposely target innocent civilians because they lack either the training or the technology to attack the Israeli government itself. Military targets have long since been regarded as "fair game" as both international law and an unwritten code of ethics. I have long since believed that the Palestinians main problem in gaining wide spread sympathy has been their acts of terrorism. So when the IDF responds in kind yes the world does tend to look the other way. One of the two has to stop the vicious cycle or it will never end. They are like to school yard bullies fighting over a favourite spot on the playground.
I do agree with the argument though of some that the US and the rest the non-Arab world, tends to always side with the Israeli's. One thing that those of Jewish decent have gotten good at is throwing the Holocaust card back in everyone's face. Now before I am ripped to pieces by the masses, this is where I need an icon of a face hiding behind a wall, I DO NOT CONDONE what happened to Jews under Hitler's rule. He was just another shining example of a madman that needed to be dealt with. And if you will remember your history it was pacifists that allowed him to get his military machine built up. It was pacifists that thought appeasment was the way to avoid war. Think of where we would be today if it wasn't for the likes of Winston Churchill. But that shouldn't give the Isreali's a blank check to do whatever they want.
To close I will leave those who don't think Saddam can touch us with something to think about. Consider the number of freighters that stay off of the US coast at any given time. How hard do you think it would be that with a little time that Saddam could put a scud missle on one of those freighters armed with say VX Nerve gas? Talk about going back to the cold war days when the US Navy use to track Soviet SSBN's.

I have just went over the posts here very briefly. So if I am repeating something someone else has already pointed out then forgive me. But, has everyone forgotten that the problem in Iraq is not only with Irag having WMD's but also it's flaggerent violation of every UN Resolution since 1991? It was if I recall correctly a UN Resolution that called for the cease fire and again if I am not mistaken it was this same resolution that made the cease fire contengient on Iraq following the mandates from the UN. They agreed at first to abide by the terms of the UN Security Council then went about doing as it pleased. When force was threaten the Iraqi leadership would comply, in a small way, to either not be attacked or to stop attacks. Think of this, what would have happened if Japan, after unconditionially surrendering, had violated any part of it's surrender to the allies at the end of WW2? The allies would have went right back to fighting them again. It is because of the weak policy of not only, then president, clinton but of the UN that has allowed Irag to go on like this. As far as France and Russia for example, wanting to find a peaceable solution and putting forward the suggestion initially that the US's intent is control of Irag's oil fields, why hasn't anyone questioned their motives when they have money invested in those same oil fields? This was something that was pointed out in December by Wolf Blizter on CNN. As far as having a reason to go to war with Irag, the latest resolution, 1441, states that should Iraq be considered in "Material Breach" that there would be serious consequences would result. They are considered by some countries to already to be in breach of not only this resolution but every other resolution before it. The US, I am assuming here and we all know what can happen when you do that, is simply waiting for more evidence to prove to the rest of the world of what it already knows. Since countries like France, Russia, and China seem to have a hard time of seeing the forest for the trees. In closing, if after all of this the UN fails to act then it will become no better than what the league of nations turned out to be. The UN must learn to grow and adapt to changes in the world or it is going to fail in it's primary mission. While I am not one to say war is the only solution sometimes it's necessary in order to have piece. Unfortunately some people only understand something that comes from the end of a gun.

Having looked over ruin's tute on ghillie suits I wanted to see if I was on the right track here. I am trying to make cammo for the M82, believe it or not I am in love with the thing,
In order to accomplish this am I going to have to edit or otherwise copy and alter the iw_srifle_m82.qob file? If so what program or programs can be used to do so? I am hoping it's one I already have. But knowing my luck with Murphy's Law well you know.... Anyway any help anyone can give I would greatly appreciate it.Stout Hearts

Ok ruin I have come to the exciting conclusion that, in the words of others, "I am not worthy, I am not worthy". Is it possible to add cammo to the other sniper rifles? I have made serveral attempts at modifing the M82, call me misquided but I love that rifle, and have yet to succeed. I am not asking for you to do it for me but if it is not possible then I will stop spinning my wheels and feeling stupid. However if it is possible then I will go back to feeling stupid and continue trying. By the way I just got IT and it rocks almost as much as your invisible sniper mod.Stout Hearts

GUN file numbers
in GR - Weapon Modding
Posted
I was playing around with the numbers in the M82barrett.gun file, imagine that, trying to see if I boost it's knockdown power. I know that IRL the slower a round travels, I.E. 900 fps for a .45, the more kenetic energy it delievers on impact. Which in turn relates to a weapons knockdown power. My question is does a person want to lower or raise the velocity numbers in this file to achieve this effect? Am I even in the right area given how Red Storm has set up the game?
On another note, I was talking with Stalker_Zero last night giving him some of my other ideas for his community mod. It seems that while great attention has been given to giving great camo to the characters most of the sniper weapons have been ignored. Except of course for Ruin's great work with his Invisible Sniper Mod.
Unfortunately, I am very new at modding and therefore may not get my work done in time for the community mod that stalker helped to get started. May I suggest to anyone out there currently working on weapons try to include cammo for all the sniper weapons? Just a thought. I am trying to come up to speed as fast as I can on modding but I unfortunately can not make any promises on this.
