  1. Unfortunately any franchise will eventually sell out. It's the nature of the beast i'm afraid and anyone who thinks differently needs to get a day ticket to the real world.

It's not just this industry but any money making industry, once a franchise is established it then ceases to trade on it's product but on it's name alone allowing inferior goods to be sold using established branding.

    Is it right? Hell no.

Are we (the general public) stupid to put up with it? Hell yes (but we do it regardless).

The only light at the end of this particular tunnel is that UBI have outsourced the PC version to another company and tbh I feel we may get some of what we want.

My thinking goes something like this.

It would be easier for UBI to just say "Hell the PC market is small fry and we're making loads more moving into the console market" and just drop the PC version full stop ala GR2. Instead they may still have a small amount of humanity left in them and will let GRIN come up with something that may JUST restore some of our faith in UBI.

One thing I cant understand though is people acting like they will somehow be UNFAITHFUL to GR if they play something else while we're waiting for GR3. I mean, c'mon guy's n gal's, get a grip ;)

  2. A few things worry me regarding this review.

No dedicated PC team. This does not bode well as up to this point in time this has meant that we, as PC owners get a 'Ported' Xbox version of games which is never done 100% effectively.

The 3rd person viewpoint. If this is the case in the final release then I for one will not be playing this game, I like my FPS's as that.

The Streamlined interface. I read this as a direct concession to console usage, ie everything you need right there on your joypad which again, up to this point in time has never translated very well across to the PC.

Lastely there is the issue of gameplay, and more specifically aiming. I have a friend who's business is consoles. He has every version of every console released in the last 7 years and imports all the titles from all over the world. Due to this fact I have played a few titles and find that the aiming on consoles is dumbed down considerably, not because of lack of skill before anyone gets on their high horse but purely because of the limitations of the joypad as a precise aiming tool. My worry is that if they are being developed simultaneously on the Xbox and PC will we get the dumbed down version.

All in all the only true test will be when it's released, but it certainly sours my excitement when I read about the joint developement :(

  3. Was wondering if anyone would like to try out the first mission of the MOD i'm working on, It's still not quite finished, a few things may be changed and the demo icons are wrong atm.

It is quite hard to complete on SP it was designed more for MP Co-op.

Thanks to Lexsis for sending me the MIB skins and a big thank you goes out to everyone that has helped answer my noobie questions, without you I wouldn't have even gotten this far.

And a HUGE thank you to Chems, who kindly said I could use his SWAT mod and then went above and beyond the call of duty and did some truly awsome models for the PDA and Bug.

Anyway, enough waffle, here it is.

    Corporate Mod

Any feedback would be great, even the negative ones ;)

  4. This might be a loop hole, the legal conflict with the SOAF maps or so I have read comes when you copy the map files straight from the game -that is unaltered-, because you are redistributing their original work, just like if some loses an essential file from GR we can't just post a link for download. So here’s the loophole; if a change were made to the maps original file it would become modified and no longer just a redistribution. Technically changing a files name fundamentally modifies the file but that might not be enough, so I think it is possible to open the .qob with a hex editor and make some simple changes to the hexametric code. That should satisfy the lawyers, or I just got myself edited for warez  .

If that were true in law then I'm gonna start changing the badges and wheels on Ford cars and selling em as my own ;)

  5. I'de say that was done using Swish or Swishmax, whole site is done in flash. I'm doing a flash site at the moment learning Swishmax, hats off to Steve, the site is simple yet very stylish which is a hard thing to achieve using Flash as you get tempted by so many effects etc.

  6. Here's my dilema, I had this whole mod worked out, I've nearly completed the first mission which leads you into the rest but have hit a snag.

Being new to modding my follow on maps were going to be the SOAF maps, Dresslers estate, the corporate HQ etc etc, but after speaking to a few guy's and reading a few threads I now realise this would be frowned upon and also has 'Legal' issues that no-one seems 100% clear on so unless I can find some city type maps and building maps like the SOAF ones then i'm pretty scuppered.

Any map designer would get full credit for their work, be they existing maps I could use or any new work they offered.

Hoping for some help here as I know there are some awesome map makers out there.

    Thanks.

  7. Just a quick question. In the mission I'm doing atm I have used a kit restriction that allows only silenced MP5's (The standard ones from GR).

My friend in the US has been playtesting it with me and he has used the MP5 quite extensively in RL and has said that the damage model and stopping power is way off as it is. We played about with it in the Gun Editor and now have it at a level that he say's is more realistic.

My question is this, I have edited my .gun file and he has edited his, but if anyone else plays this mission i'm assuming it references their .gun file and they will have the original specs.

How do I include the new file in the mod?

  8. Cheers m8, I think I figured how to do a kit restriction but I still need to know what kit is the MP5 and MP5SD in IGOR.

All i have in origimis, MP1 and MP2 are loads of rifleman1, rifleman2 etc kits, any idea which of them is the MP5 and MP5SD ones ?

I also need to make a kit with MP5SD with Demo Charges, anyone know why none of the MP5SD kits have demo?

  9. This is where it gets a bit sticky though isn't it, unless you include a EULA with everything you post up etc then technically using it isnt an infringement.

Believe me I'm not trying to condone theft or imply people shouldn't ask, I'm just trying to get some guidlines to work by so I dont step on anyones toes as I've already on numerous occassions tried contacting several people regarding using their skins/weapons and have had no reply from most of them.

Unfortunately atm i'm only doing mission modding and cant build my own maps and skins etc. If I ever actually learn this skill as well then the whole issue becomes mute ;)

Thanks all for your input and hopefully soon (when I feel my efforts are up to it) you can all have a look at my work.

  10. Hmmm, see already we have some confusion about the SOAF maps and that then raises the issue of distributing a MOD.

I do a complete MOD using a SOAF map that I own a copy of, IF I then release this MOD and people download it and use it without owning the SOAF game am I then encouraging people to use dodgy software?

Also, If someone posts up a skin/weapon pack etc for free download in these forums then is it really necessary to contact them?

I'm not saying I wouldn't attempt to (I have and will continue to) but for me personally, if I released something that someone wanted to use (which is a long way off if my pathetic efforts dont improve drastically ;)) then I personally would be delighted if they did ask me but wouldn't take offence if they didn't.

I fully understand that this would in no way apply to direct plaigarism (ripping a particular mission out of a mod) and passing it off as your own, or in the case of a major MOD such as Dynacomp or BoB etc. I'm just talking about using a weapon or skin that has been released on the forum.

  11. After reading a few of these posts I gotta ask this question just to make sure I don't step on anyones toes.

I have been playing GR on and off since it's release but have never really got into the 'Scene' as it were.

Recently after playing a lot I thought "Hey, I'll give this modding lark a go" and fired up IGOR, (OMG  )

I've received no end of help and advice from the members of this forum and couldn't have done any of my mission mods without it and no doubt will still be posting for help for years to come, or at least till people get bored of my questions and ban me from the forum ;)

Anyway, I'm waffling now so will get to the point.

As someone new to the scene would it not be a good idea to post up some guidlines to just what is and what is not acceptable to use. See my problem is this. MOD's, Mission's, Weapon's, Skin's and Map's are freely available from so many sources that as a beginner it is hard to know just what is Acceptable to use and what isn't.

I will explain with an example.

My first attempt at a mission mod I thought I would start off with a smallish map, with just a couple of simple demo objectives, easy I thought :rocky: .

After downloading the tutorials etc I was still pulling my hair out and found this forum and posted up some questions I had. I had a great response and finally managed to complete this simple mission. It wasn't perfect, I had probably made loads of errors in the script ie doing things the hard way or the long way round etc, but it was mine, I had done it and was proud ;)

I asked one of the people who had given me some help with my questions if they would look over it for some constructive criticism and they said sure.

After posting a link up i got a PM from them saying that as I had used a SOAF's map and also said they would need DA4.9 active to play it (Which I dont think you needed but it was active while I made it so I wasnt sure) they couldn't test it.

I replied back via PM saying I didn't realise that there was a problem with any of this but have never received a reply.

The SOAF maps I downloaded from a major GR site as well as DA4.9 so not being active in the GR forum community I was unaware of any issues concerning these.

What I am saying is this, after reading the Dynacomp thread and several others I'm now totally confused as to what I can and cant use to do my missions. Chems has kindly said I can use his SWAT mod for my player characters, and even gone so far as to say he will make me some handheld items (Huge Kudos m8) and someone else has sent me some men in suits actors for my opfor.

All i'm after is a few guidelines, I DO NOT want this thread to turn into a DA or Dynacomp bashing thread, or a flame war, just give a new potential modder a few pointers or i'm afraid i'm just gonna give up on this whole thing and just go back to playing instead.

  12. I wondered if there was a limit to looping sounds, I have an alarm siren set to go off if certain things happen, it was set to loop for 6 seconds. I changed it to 10 seconds in the script but it still only loops for 6 seconds?

  13. Thanks Jack57, I do have the mod and it rocks, now i understand a bit more about IGOR i will check those scripts out when i get home. I must admit I looked at various peoples scripts when I first started learning and they confused me more than helped, hopefully now I can make sense of them.

I take it they use the zone as the trigger rather than the planting of a demo charge then. If this is the case does that mean any player can activate it cos I want it to be only players carrying the Hacking device (read demo charges)?

  14. I was wondering if there was a way of stopping a counter if a particular player dies in co-op mode.

The situation is this, I have a scenario where a player must plant a demo charge (This will change to him planting a hacking device soon, but the result is the same script wise) at a computer to simulate hacking data from it. This activates a timer that counts down 20 seconds then the objective is declared complete.

Once he places the demo charge it also activates a reinforcement squad who teleports into the area and displays a message to the player team to cover him.

My question is this, if he dies the counter continues and the objective still completes. Is there a way of stopping and resetting this counter if HE dies, not worried about the other player characters, just the one who placed the demo charge. If there are no other demo equiped guys on the team then the mission fails due to not enough demo charges left which is fine, but if there are any left I want them to then have to start the hack again themselves.

  15. ***Edited due to being a plonker***

1: In the mission mod i'm working on atm I want the SWAT team to use MP5 SD weapons and the Opfor to use unsilenced MP5's, any idea what kit the enemy would need for unsilenced MP5 and possibly grenades ?

2: How do I set up a kit restriction so only the silenced MP5's would be selectable and does this just effect the Players selection (i.e can the Opfor still have any weapon I give them in the script) ?

I'm still learning this stuff so please don't get to technical ;)

  16. I was wondering if one of you expert modders out there could spare 10mins of you time to advise me whether something can actually be done or not.

I don't expect you to actually do the work just say forget it if it cant be done so I don't waste day's trying something that is impossible.

I would rather not discuss it openly in the forums as it involves a mod i'm planning and would rather keep it under wraps for the moment.

Either PM me or my MSN Messenger account is dai_san@msn.com

Hope someone can give me some advice.

    Thanks.

  17. ********** Ignore this, I managed to figure it out ;) **********

Hmmm, aint easy this Igor lark is it ;)

OK, so far I got Chems swat team for my Player characters (thanks again Chems)

And Lexsis kindly sent me some men in suits. Here's the rub.

These are the files i have.

    suit1.chr

    suit1_a.chr

    suit1_b.chr

    suit1.rsb

    suit1_face.rsb

    suit1_face_blink.rsb

And then the same again for suit2.

There are no actor files but I went into the IGOR actor editor and selected the files for the actor following the same guidlines as a standard GR character and saved it as a suits1.act file.

When I swapped one of my normal actors for one of the new ones in IGOR and saved the mission, upon trying it in GR it crashes to desktop.

Can anyone point me to where the above files should be saved etc and point out what I am doing wrong?

  18. Hi m8, I'm just getting into modding and am currently doing a mission mod on the docks map.

Chems has kindly given permission for me to use his SWAT skins for the player team and i'm after a skin/skins for use with the enemies. Basically i'm after a skin that looks like a business suit etc.

The theme of the mission revolves around a business cartel importing drugs so I want to have enemies that are more corporate/organised crime looking rather than terrorist/army looking. All going well then I will hopefully expand it into a series of missions.

Hope this clarifies what i'm after a bit better ;)

PS, Chems, new sig coming soon, this one looks horrible shrunk, want me to remove it altogether or it ok for a few days ?
