IMO, Linux is easier to install Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc.
It's much more difficult to install and configure these under Windows.
Seriously, if you need help installing Ubuntu, let me know.
-
That's really odd. You might try posting on the official ubuntu forums. People there are usually very helpful. Do you have any specific error message?
-
Yeah definitely, lemme know if you have more questions.

I've found this to be an extremely useful website for learning things to do in Ubuntu. They always update with the latest release (the current release is Feisty).
-
In feisty, if you go to System -> Preferences -> Desktop Effects, you can turn them on. This is a new feature in feisty and this option is not there in Edgy. They only included a couple features like wobbly windows and some other small things in feisty because it's still considered beta software. But at least you can play with them a little bit. I think the next version of Ubuntu should have more graphical features available.
So here's the deal with the desktop effects. It all started with Compiz, but some people who worked on Compiz wanted to add even crazier effects and some of the Compiz people wanted to keep it stable and not have two billion things in Compiz. So they forked the project and split off to form Beryl. They released versions of Beryl which was widely popular and now finally they decided to work together again and merge the Beryl features back into Compiz, thus Compiz-Fusion.

At least that's my understanding of it.

Not sure, I've never used it. I've setup MythTV before which is Linux software.
But, it's really a tinkering project and probably won't work "out of the box" so to speak. Hauppauge makes excellent cards though, you'll be happy with that one.

-
What kind of media center software are you going to use?
-
Yeah really, it seems like a very small market to pitch to. Power users would probably just use Linux.
-
I think you can also go into System -> Administration -> Restricted Drivers and if it autodetects you have an Nvidia card you can install the propriety drivers right there. But.. sudo apt-get install works too.

Played with the desktop effects yet?

-
Sweet. I loved the original. The gun battles were awesome!

-
I thought newer operating systems were supposed to be faster than the old ones?

-
Cool. I'm waiting for some screenshots though.

Just got the Kingdoms expansion pack, lots of fun. Playing as the Apache right now.
-
Cool! Thanks for the link.

-
Definitely.

I probably won't be touching them after the setup so I doubt that would be a big problem for me. Time to try again, hope Paypal is working...
Thanks for the help all.

edit:
Well, the order is in. I should have it up and running by next weekend.
Woot!

OK, here's what I have. I just tried paying with Paypal but it doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

With multi-core systems becoming more popular, is physics acceleration really necessary?
-
Yeah, good point. I'm looking at these two right now:

DFI versus MSI. These were the two that I found in my price range and have the 680i chipset. I'm leaning towards the DFI because the last system I built had a DFI motherboard and I love it.

There's a great preview in PC Gamer for those of you that get it.

@firefly2442, just curious, how come you didn't go with the EVGA 122-CK-NF68-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i?
---was it the price/rebate? I love rebates

I had this board on my wishlist too due to the Northbride cooler, something about it catches my eyes. Don't know the pro's n con's about it though.

Hmm, dunno, I guess I didn't notice that one in my searches. So, it basically allows for a faster clock cycle on the memory? Going through the specs, that's the only major difference I can find. Do you have any experience with EVGA motherboards? I guess I didn't even know they made motherboards until today. I thought they just did video cards...
-
Ok, here's what I have so far:
Antec 900 case (already bought it, sitting right next to me)
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM Write Black SATA Model LH-20A1S - Retail
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM (this will be upgraded with another better hard drive later)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail
I'm almost certain these are the components I want, unless someone thinks otherwise. Here are the areas I am having trouble with.
Motherboard:
EVGA 122-CK-NF67-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i LT SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
I'm not sure if this motherboard will be good enough. Should I try to get a better motherboard with DDR3 memory? I want integrated audio, 10/100/1000 NIC, firewire, and USB. What are the best companies? I also don't want this to happen:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Now_Bios_phoeni...ONLY_with_Vista
Power:
I was thinking 900 Watt? Probably Antec?
RAM:
This depends on the motherboard, DDR2, DDR3? Are Crucial or OCZ good brands?
CPU Cooler:
Zalman 9700 series
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835118020
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835118019
What's the difference between the two? What's the difference between a 3 pin versus 4 pin power connector for the fan?
Thanks for the help!

Version 0.9 has been released:
This version has many security enhancements, code optimizations, RSS feeds, and an improved installer. Because of changes in the database, previous users of RivetTracker will have to perform a complete reinstall.

I used to label all my power cables for my monitor and computers and only use the ones that came in the packaging, but is that really necessary? I looked more closely at them the other day and they seem exactly the same in terms of the power they provide.

Use Firefox? Hate annoying ads?
I just installed this the other day and this addon really works well for automatically removing ads. And if it's not on the list of blocked items, all you have to do is right click and block it. Pretty simple.
