  3. New Gran Turismo game to be pay-as-you-go

9/21/2006 3:27:58 PM, by Jeremy Reimer

With less than two months to go (barring any further delays) before the planned November launch of the PlayStation 3, Sony's online plans for the console are still largely up in the air. Thus it came as a bit of a surprise when in an interview for Japan's Famitsu magazine, the creator of the Gran Turismo series, Kazunori Yamauchi, gave a detailed look at how the latest GT game will make use of online features.

The latest installment in the Gran Turismo series will be called Gran Turismo: HD. Sony is really pushing the high resolution aspect of the PS3, so look for more titles to use the "HD" moniker. GT:HD will be released in two installments: the first will be "Classic" and will hit shelves in time for the PS3 launch. Coming later will be the "Premium" edition that will use more advanced graphics technology and be essentially a preview for the "proper" GT5, which is scheduled for release in 2008.

Besides the graphical improvements, the major news about GT:HD revolves around the online portion of the game. The game starts out with no cars or tracks loaded. Players can purchase cars for ¥50-100 (about $0.45 to $0.85) and courses for ¥200-500 ($1.70 to $4.30). Online race events are defined by the players themselves, and can be held at any time. Initially, over 750 cars and 50 tracks will be made available, with additional releases to come over time. There are also plans for "limited edition" car and track downloads, which will likely be priced higher.

GT:HD Premium will come with 30 cars and two courses built-in, with additional ones available for purchase online in the same fashion. Aside from the improved graphics, it will have additional features such as variable weather. The game itself will be more free-form than the Classic release, more of a driving simulator than a standard singleplayer game where you earn new content by completing various missions.

What will the public reaction be to a pay-as-you-go model for content? Some might argue that this has already been shown to be acceptable in the form of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), but monthly fees for those titles pay not only for new content but the vast array of servers required to support an online world with millions of users. Singleplayer games such as Oblivion have tried out this model in a limited fashion by offering extras (such as special horse armor) that are available only via purchased download. However, it remains to be seen whether gamers will embrace this idea when carried to the next level. A quick calculation shows that to purchase all 750 cars and 50 tracks would cost an astonishing $637, more than the price of the console itself!

So what's the reasoning behind the move to a pay-as-you go model? The same reason given for the ever-increasing inclusion of advertising in games: the runaway costs of game development. All those high-definition models and textures cost money to create, and companies are clearly looking for a way to increase revenue to match these costs. Will the future of gaming be pay-as-you-go? Depending on the success of GD:HD, it may well be.

    Link

There is hints floating around that Gran Turismo is only the first inline to to use the pay as you go. If this is true and is the future for gameing online. I guess its time to pack up and leave and find a new hobbie. I know the x360 does this alittle bit, but at least we get a full game before we pay for extra's! I don't expect this to really be a norm for games right now, but i sure hope this dont caught on to much, but i do expect EA to be the first to jump on the band wagon with pay as you go!

  4. Microsoft is given all x360 owners 9 days of TGS (Tokyo game show) right at home with 9 days of down loads. If you want or like any of the down loads grab them fast because they only up for a short time on the Market place. Only like 4 weeks or something (i well fix the date later) Anyways everday for 9 days new stuff comes out i well post the new Demos, trailers, & other stuff here. Today we starting with -

I have had the chance to use this and it works great as far as i can tell. You can add in internet radio feed & podcast of your fav shows + add your fav websites so you can relook them over on the x360 if your to lazy to get up and go the the PC. I dont use the web pages becuase i dont care to see them on my x360 without surfing them, but just for the use for podcast and internet radio its a must have. The first time you use the XB steam it down loads all the shows to your PC so may take awhile, but once its done it well look for new shows and DL the new one as it deletes the old ones not taken up much time at all. Well thats the only part i hate is when it checks for new shows, but you can turn it off to not look for new shows and only look when you want it to.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces New March 2007 date for European Launch of PLAYSTATION 3

No change in launch date for Japan and North America

London, Wednesday 6 September 2006 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that it would revise the launch date of its PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system in the PAL territories of Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Australasia from 17th November 2006, as previously announced to March 2007.

Launch dates for Japan and North America will remain the same, which are November 11th and November 17th respectively.

The revision of the launch date in the SCEE territories is caused by the delay in the mass production schedule of the blue laser diode within the Sony Group, thus affecting the timely procurement of key components to be utilised in PLAYSTATION 3.

The previously announced PLAYSTATION 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed.

  9. E3 cancelled for next year and beyond [update 3]

    Posted Jul 30th 2006 2:30PM by Conrad Quilty-Harper

Next-Gen has the scoop: Doug Lowenstein, the president of the Entertainment Software Association is expected to announce within the next 48 hours that E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the definitive video games show, has been cancelled. Industry sources have told Next-Gen that the reasoning behind this move is primarily one of cost versus return. Publishers aren't getting the media attention that they expect from the large amounts of cash that they're putting down to exhibit at the show.

Apparently publishers believe that the multi-million dollar budgets allocated to E3 would be better used on smaller, specific shows where publishers get all the limelight. There's the possibility of a smaller show taking place in May next year, but as Next-Gen puts it, "it's clear that the days of an industry event attended by all the major publishers, spending big money, are gone."

Check out our commentary on the cancellation at the continued link below.

Joystiq's good, the bad and the ugly commentary on E3's cancellation.

    First up, the good.

Our jobs get easier. During E3, the Joystiq team churned out 100 posts a day over the duration of the event, but there were probably still things that we missed. If there are multiple shows throughout the year, we'll be able to cover events in more detail and breadth.

You, the reader, get a much more even flow of information. As one of the team members that didn't attend the show, I had a hard job keeping up with the flow of content. Now that E3 is gone, I can look forward to consuming my gaming news in smaller, easier to digest chunks.

More access to the public? E3 was not accessible to the public, and was a strictly over-18 trade and press show. Hopefully future shows will split the show between press/trade exclusive days and open-access days so regular consumers can try out the latest games and hardware.

A cooler atmosphere. E3 is was a very stressful place to be, with every booth being designed to be as loud and as bright as possible in order to attract as much attention as possible. Now that E3 is gone, publishers and developers won't have to spend so much money hiring dancers and huge booths. In other words, the games will have a chance to shine through.

Worldwide game shows, not just L.A? Due to the expected fragmentation that the E3 cancellation is expected to bring, we can probably expect more regional shows designed to target individual demographics in different countries.

More focus on indies? Independent developers either couldn't attend E3 due to the high cost, or if they did, they were drowned out by the big publishers and their massive booths.

    Next up, the bad.

Less excitement? Like a little kid waiting for Christmas, E3 excited gamers the world across. They knew that come early May, they'd be reading about the games they'd be playing for the next year. The separate, publisher exclusive shows expected after E3 will probably mean less of this Christmas kid excitement. Or, the same excitement, but in smaller doses throughout the year.

Our jobs get harder. Journalists and people covering the games industry will have to travel further and more often in order to cover the gaming industry. That could mean that smaller events get less coverage as the press prioritize their travel budgets.

No more "big three" faceoff. One of the most entertaining parts of E3 was watching Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo try to one up each other.

Lots more "big three" faceoffs. Imagine a world with Nintendo Space World, Sony SUPER EVENT, and MS X-event. Doesn't sound too appealing does it?

Finally, the ugly. Or: miscellaneous commentary on the cancellation.

Gamespot states that this is merely a downsizing and relocation. That effectively means the same thing as a cancellation. Next year's E3 will be a shadow of a memory of previous E3s. If the ESA doesn't manage to get the big guys back on board, another organizer will step in within the next 18 months with a show that will take E3's crown as the king of gaming trade shows.

Don't expect any major gaming trade shows to take place next year. If the Gamestars Live/ECTS fiasco in the UK in 2004 was anything to go by, we can expect very little in the way of trade shows next year. 2008 will feature a lot of smaller, developer orientated shows, and by 2009/10 we'll be booking our tickets to go to E3's replacement.

In the short term, GDC is going to get big, very big. As the next biggest American gaming show after E3, expect a lot of next year's big gaming news to come out of San Fransisco.

  10. I own just about every game on the x360. I find there is a small amount of framerate issue in most of the x360 games if at all, but i do find alot of tearing in just about every last game! Besides the arcade games i think there is like 3 or 4 games that don't tear. As for the framerate this has not been to much a issue on most the games. The 2 worst i seen has been Quake 4 & NFS:MW. There are more sure, but it's not like those two games where its so bad it becomes unplayable!

I do agree any gen console should be opt to run the games at 30fps mostly this gen for that matter. I still believe its still very early where all the games are being rushed alittle bit. Yet if it comes to xmas time and after and when the x360 turns on the other two cores and if the x360 is still tearing and choppy when all 3 cores are running than i well be haven a fit! So with the early games so far and only seeing it run with only one core im still happy with what i see and know its going or at least should get better with the fps and tearing when the system is running at full power.

  11. Besides the graphics looking good the game play is just not for me i guess!

Try the singleplayer. Multiplayer isn't very good.

I did and i still feel the same way.

To be honest i guess i just never liked the scifi type games anyhow. Some people are going to like it im sure, but it's just not for me is all im saying. Nothing wrong with the game beyond that.

  12. I played it for afew with friends online. It looks great, but im just not feeling anything for this game. Besides the graphics looking good the game play is just not for me i guess!

  13. I think they are good. For a flight sim game i may say it's the best looking one planes and ground wise. The ground sometimes looks low rez when close to the ground like landing, but compared to other flight sims i say it looks great.

  14. You get 5 new maps for 800 points in the new map pack for COD2!

  15. Chromhounds demo is now up on the market place!

You can now download a demo of 'Chromehounds' from the Xbox Live Marketplace. This free demo is available in all Xbox Live regions EXCEPT the U.S. and Canada. Yes, you read that right...this demo is not available in the U.S. or Canada.

Hope all you US and canada guys keep your Japan or german gamer tags to get other region demo's becuase i know i still got mine!

  16. I finaly got Over-G today and im loven it so far. It is the best Sim type of flight Sim i have ever played on a console! Maybe not by PC standers anyways, but for console its a must have if you love flight Sims. Only reason i don't compare it to PC is 2 reasons,

    1. No flight Stick support (at the moment anyways)

    2. Not enough Take off's and lands

Other than that it flies like a dream and very sim like from what i seen so far. I am also playing it on the hardest level so the AI is no joke and is in no way arcady! I have been hit and the plane acts wounded like loses speed and controls from the hit you toke. Im still learning the game and getting shot out of the air way to much that im really love it! Also on real setting you have limmited ammo and fuel. Graphics are great nice and clean. The ground is just eye popping at times when in afterburner and you just want to slow down to look around. Bad things i found so far is mostly the editor aint what i was hopen for. It's just a plain old editor where you choose map your plane, enemies (Planes, Boats & Armor) how far you start, what way each of you are facing and thats about it except afew other small things. 2nd is how long the missions are some i beat in less than 40 seconds. 3rd is you have to play the SP just to have planes to use online. You start with one plane and thats it until you unlock more. The online is what makes the game so far i have seen zero lag in full rooms and is very fun. Bad thing is i only have two planes and everyone else has much better planes than i do right now Plus after each match it kicks you out and you have to rejoin a room after every round! So until i unlock more planes the MP is the best part of the game and any flight sim fan would be more than happy.

I well play more and learn more about the game and if anyone wants to know anything let me know i well try to post on it.

    Edit:

I got to play more online in a mode called arena and all i can say is OMG.

It's the best game type on the game. A online game can sometime last up to a 1 hour or so. There is 4 teams of 2 people each, every team gets a Airfield and a Aircraft Carrier Plus Flak Guns and AI to help guard your base. Once the AI is dead they are gone for good same as for your boat fleets. Anyways the main goal is to take out all your enemy's Airfields so they can't respawn.

The game type has limmited ammo so once you use it up you have to land back at 1 of 3 landing fields (Home base Airfield, Aircraft Carrier or a free zone Airfield) to restock on ammo and repairs! All the time it's Sim style like with a PC Sim. This is the only game type with respawns if you die you start back at home Airfield taxiing down the runway. The maps are large it can take you 5 to 15 mins from your base to another (Depends on if your plane has mach speed). Than you have to go back to restock or find your Aircraft Carrier or the free zone Airfield to cut time in half. So Mach speed is very nice when tring to get from one place to the next. Very Fun game type and helps to have a good team mate. Maybe it's just me, but i love that it force's you to Take Off and Land!

Also i been playing around with stealth Bombers so i been tring to see how high the celling is. I went so high that it started to get dark and the stars came out & my plane started to stall! Also i got to love that its all manuel Bombing and can get very hard tring to bomb on the edge of space i tell you, but very awarding when it hits!
