As with all radars it is limited to line of site. In my very limited experience with GSR it seemed their usefulness was also down to the skill of the operator.

In RL the flashlights (tactical illuminators) can be fitted with Infra Red lenses. With these fitted they act very much like a normal flashlight for those wearing night vision equipment.
