  1. There are a few conversions that have to be done to the IT directories and files; the primary tutorial on installing IT for Mac is here,, while general Mac mod info is here,.

N.B.: UBB mangles the URLs for GameSpy; clicking on either of the above links gives a 404. Add a comma (',') to the end of the URL to get to the page.

  2. From a Mac perspective, Netfone is a near-perfect choice -- OSX-native, capable of recognizing any system audio I/O device (it had no problems with a Logitech USB headset, which was necessary for my particular desktop rev), throttled bandwidth requirements, and a remarkably low CPU footprint given that it's doing real-time encryption.

Here's the caveat: since the current version of NetFone is peer-to-peer (an issue they're correcting in the next version), you can't currently "conference" in any meaningful sense. Instead, you'll have to coordinate multiple connections.

If you have a four-player group, setup should look something like this:

User 1: Connect to users 2,3,4.

User 2: 1 and 2 are connected. Connect to users 3,4.

    User 3: 1 and 3; 2 and 3 are connected. Connect to user 4.

    User 4: No connections necessary.

After that's done, everyone will be able to talk to and hear each other. As S64 noted, it's easiest for everyone to get a DynDNS address, so you can use NetFone's built-in address book feature.

We'll hopefully get a (>2)-way game going tomorrow night, so we'll post an update after that.

  3. Although I haven't tried it yet, I've read that RW suffers from problems when running in Classic while playing an OSX-native game. GameSpy has suggested that they'll do a MacOS X port of RW if interest exists.

Haxial's NetFone is supposedly a solid product for cross-platform voice, although its bandwidth and CPU requirements are somewhat greater than RW. The main issue is that it's peer-to-peer only, but the next major release should include an RW-like client-server feature.

We'll try it tonight and see what happens.
