  1. This might have more to do with the graphics card drivers then the windows version. 

    Most recent drivers don't really work well anymore with DirectX 8 which is the version GR requires. So you'll need something that exposes DirectX 8 functions while still working with your graphics card.

    Updated the article with new information



    For graphics: dgVoodoo 2.54 (http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/); put x86 version of D3D8.dll in the game folder. dgVoodoo, latest version can also be used. You must set "Output API" to Direct3D 12 with an updated AMD card and all should work.

    For audio: DSOAL latest (http://vaporeon.io/hosted/dsoal-builds/); put all 3 files in the game folder.

    So this is just something to answer myself, but also other players still trying to figure out how to get GR working on Windows 10/ 11 with great graphics and audio.

    1. Installation:

    The original installation media for GR has DRM. You can go to GOG to grab a copy of DRM-free Ghost Recon. In you don't want to buy this one but have the original installation media there are instructions available on this forum to get it working like that as well.

    2. Graphics:

    The bloom effect mod from ENB series seems to not natively do 32-bit Z-buffer. It looks a little that the option doesn't get exposed properly. No worries, since there is something called dgVoodoo2 that actually is capable of exposing this option properly so you can set it in-game. Using dgVoodoo2 for AMD graphics cards owners that update their drivers also resolves that annoying MiniDumpWriteDump error for the atiumdag.dll file.

    1. Get dgVoodoo2; either 2.54 or latest version: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/
    2. Extract the archive
    3. Place D3D8.dll from the x86 folder (since this is a 32-bit game) in the game folder
    4. Configure dgVoodoo control panel (application found in the archive)
      1. Version 2.54: No specific configuration required
      2. Version latest: For AMD cards with the latest drivers, it is required to set the Output API to Direct3D 12
    5. Start GR where 32-bit Z-buffer can now be selected (meaning you don't have to force it in the options.xml file)

    3. Audio:

    DSOAL is an open source libary that enables EAX, even without owning a soundblaster card.

    1. Get DSOAL; latest version: http://vaporeon.io/hosted/dsoal-builds/
    2. Extract the archive
    3. Place the 3 files in the game folder.

  3. Maybe to do some clarification on the topic. Starting with Windows Vista, everything around DirectSound3D has been taken out of the operating system. Therefore you must now use software that circumvents this to bring positional audio back.

    So if you still want positional audio in your game you need to choose one of the 3 software options below and follow the steps to make everything work:

    1. Creative ALchemy Universal: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/28-creative-alchemy-universal/
      1. This is sort of the Creative library itself, but with support for any soundcard. Usually works very well.
      2. Open the application and Add/ Activate the application for ALchemy usage.
    2. DSOAL: http://vaporeon.io/hosted/dsoal-builds/
      1. This is an Open-Source version that supports any soundcard and is still being actively supported today
      2. Drop the files into the directory of your installation. alsoft.ini is used to configure how DSOAL should behave.
    3. IndirectSound: https://www.indirectsound.com/
      1. IndirectSound has only very limited EAX support, but might sometimes be the only way to get everything working.

    From here you should be good to go with positional audio in place again. Results will vary based on setup and used software.
