  1. Well it is finally done! Saute is alive and kicking! :punk:

    It took a bit longer than expected, but so far (the past week or so) it screams and is rock solid (on Windogs 98se non the less). Ghost Recon rocks on this machine!

    Here is a quickie recap....

    Old Computer:

    Chaintech 7AJA ATX motherboard

    AMD Duron 1 ghz

    448 MB PC133 RAM

    PNY GeForce 2 MX 400 32 MB

    MadDog Multimedia PCI sound card 5.1

    12 GB Samsung drive (old and slow 5400 rpm) ATA 33

    20 GB Maxtor drive 7200 RPM ATA 66

    One rear 80 mm case fan

    One 230 watt power supply (I thought it was 300, good thing I looked! :stupid:)

    One (what I thought was) adequate generic beige mid tower case

    New Computer:

    Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro ATX motherboard

    AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton core)

    512 MB Corsair XMS3200 dual channel DDR (256x2)

    Chaintech GeForce FX 5200 128 MB

    40 GB Maxtor drive 7200 RPM ATA 133

    Two rear 80 mm case fans

    Two front 80 mm case fans

    One 420 watt Chieftec dual ball bearing fan power supply

    One Chieftec Dragon beige mid tower case (I love this case :thumbsup:), no window, no side fan

    Left on my wish-list for this computer:

    Two serial ATA drives

    At least one more (prefferably 3 :devil: ) 40 GB Maxtor drives

  2. Any hosting company that offers dedicated servers will let you pretty much do as you wish with the server, from flavor of OS, to RAM, CPU flavor, drive(s), etc.

    Once you pay the bucks for being the only client on a single server... :thumbsup:

  3. The only reason I even mentioned using a $99 a month host is because it seemed to me that firefly2442 wanted *total* control over the server. You are not going to get that for $60 a year. :)

    The main reason you would pay that kind of money is to be able to have complete control over your server. And $99 a month is pretty cheap for a dedicated server that you can do with as you please.

    Here is a chunk of the comcast AUP:

    xiv) run programs, equipment, or servers from the Premises that provide network content or any other services to anyone outside of your Premises LAN (Local Area Network), also commonly referred to as public services or servers. Examples of prohibited services and servers include, but are not limited to, e-mail, Web hosting, file sharing, and proxy services and servers;

    You will find that just about every service provider has a very similar AUP, be they cable, dsl or dial-up. Some will even exclude the use of dynamic dns services as well.

    Think that is bad, most broadband providers are now working on ways to block the consumer from using their own routers to share access in a single dwelling. They want you to pay for each computer that is connected to the service. ATTBI used to charge $10 a month for each additional computer. :o=

    It all boils down to what you are planning on doing with the server. :)

    For us $50 a month to the cable company for cable internet access and $50 a month to our domain hosting service. :D

  4. Option 1: Do not even try it. They will shut you down, and may even boot you off the system competely.

    Option 2: This is the only way to go. You can get a dedicated server for around $99 a month running pretty much any flavor of linux that you want to have (Value web comes to mind). Also add into that the domain registration for your site.

    We pay $50 a month for the hosting for our site which we have had since 1992. As the old saying goes... "If you want to play, you have got to pay."

    Option 3: Same as option 1. Both DSL and Cable do not allow for hosting of a web site other than the minimal space they give you for a "personal page". Read that as very low bandwidth, non-business.

    Option 4: Not even worth thinking about.

    Option 5: Is just plain funny. :rofl:

    PC 12 Volt Cigarette Lighter Adapter Kit $15.00

    Need a light?? Here you go. You'll only find this item here at FrozenCPU.com! Basically, this is a car cigarette lighter kit which has been adapted to be used in a PC's 5 1/4 bay.

    What this kit includes:

    * Cigarette Lighter

    * Sleeved 4pin 12v Molex Connector

    * Washer for drilling the hole

    With this adapter kit, your PC can now do EVERYTHING a regular Cigarette Lighter can with no trouble at all. Charge cell phones, power cd players, you name it.

    :huh:

    Picture is of a kit already mounted on an aluminum 5 1/4 inch faceplate.

    :rofl:

    I HAD to share this with you all!

  6. If you change this:

    A {

    color: #990000;

    text-decoration: underline;

    }

    To this:

    A:link {

    color: #990000;

    text-decoration: underline;

    }

    :yes:

    CSS is not forgiving at all to errors such as this. To make sure your CSS files are valid use this URL:

    http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

    It is a very good FREE service, but even it did not catch this error in your stylesheet.

    You can use this URL to validate your HTML pages:

  7. Thanks to everyone for their input on this. :)

    Here is what I finally ended up ordering and it will be in my sweaty palms on monday.

    AMD Athlon XP 2500+ 1.83GHz 333FSB Retail package with fan and heatsink $90

    Two Corsair VS256MB333 256MB DDR333 PC2700 $48 each

    Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro nForce2 Ultra 400 with RAID and serial ATA $119 :geek:

    Chaintech A-FX20 GeForce FX 5200 AGP 8X 128MB $70

    I know it's not the Ti4200 but I could not justify the extra $40-$70 for it. Also it is the only "budget" 5200 that I found that has a fan on it.

    Needless to say, it's going to be a long time between now and monday! :-"

  8. Considering an upgrade to my Duron system... Currently a Chaintech 7AJA with a 1 ghz Duron and 448 MB RAM, GeForce2 MX200 32mb.

    Here is what I am looking at right now:

    Albatron - KX400+ PRO

    I won't be using the onboard audio, but I can really use the 6 PCI slots on this board (considering that I lose one once I put in the AGP card) :wall:

    Why do they make motherboards with the AGP slot so close to the PCI slots?:wacko:

    AMD Athlon XP2400+ 266MHz FSB / Thoroughbred core

    I can get the Athlon XP2500 333MHz FSB / Barton core for only a few bucks more. Which one should I get? Considering that the 2400 is 2 ghz and the 2500 is 1.87 ghz :ermm:

    Speeze - Socket A Aluminum Fan up to XP 3000+ (80mm)

    Would I be better off buying a ThermalTake fan instead?

    Two 512MB PC2700 DDR 333MHz

    Right now I am still running Win98se and will initially only use one of the 512 MB sticks, but am thinking about upgrading to XP, and I can get the memory at a pretty good price right now.

    Albatron GeForceFX 5200 128MB 8X AGP with TV Out and DVI

    Now the motherboard is only 4x AGP but who knows maybe I'll upgrade the motherboard again in the near future to an 8x AGP board.

    I can get all of this for around $375 (U.S.) which I think is a really good price. And to top it all off I don't have to pay for it. I'll be taking my current setup and putting it into my mother-in-laws PC and I get the new goodies! 0:)

    Na, I don't blame them at all. Just that it is really amusing to me that in close to two decades of being online (BBS's in the early 80s and since 1992 the internet), this is the first time any post I have made anywhere has ever been edited/locked/deleted or anything like that.

    Personally, I dont know of it, but it sounds like it's just another virtual CD drive, allowing you to run CD's from your HDD.

    Well then I'll be the test subject and let you all know how well it does or does not work.

    And thanks for the welcome to GR.net! :D

  10. Well I asked this on the UBI GR forum and it got edited and locked... :o

    There is a program at http://www.farstone.com called GameDrive. Does anyone here use this with GR/IT/DS?? Is it worth shelling out the $20 (us) for this? I use a lot of different CDs while in front of my computer, and anything to save me time (and that works!) and keep me from constantly opening and closing jewel cases all the time, I'm all for it!
