    Additional Information about the I-185

We’re including these two aircraft as a token of gratitude to V. Loginov - the founder of the sukhoi.ru resource that was very supportive throughout the year of creation of the Il-2; and with esteem to his grandfather, who had the honour of test-flying these two.

    I-185 M-82, 1941

    Type: multi-role fighter.

    Weight:

    Take-0ff: 3,735 kg

    Full loaded: 3,825 kg

    Armament:

    3x20mm ShVAK cannons

    500 kg of bombs

I-185 with the M-82 engine was intended to be the I-185 with increased armament. Instead of two large-caliber and two small-caliber machine guns the I-185 M-82 was equipped with three 20mm ShVAKs. In addition to that the plane also had a redesigned canopy, gear struts and fuselage. Altogether two prototypes were built; the first flew on July 21st 1941. Both I-185 M-82s participated in front-line trials between December of 1942 and January 1943.

    Advantages:

    Excellent speed characteristics

    Ease of control

    Powerful armament

    Disadvantages:

Slower climb rate than I-185 M-71.

    I-185 M-71 (production standard), 1942

    Type: multi-role fighter.

    Range: 835 km

    Armament:

    3x20mm ShVAK cannons

    500 kg of bombs

The I-185 prototype equipped with the M-71 engine which first flew on June 10, 1942 was designated a “production standard”, i.e. a prototype which was to be used as a standard for future production. Compared to other prototypes of the series many defects were resolved and the overall aerodynamics improved. The I-185 M-71 production standard was built from the blueprints intended for serial production.

The I-185 M-71 production standard, in addition to the I-185 M-71 #6204 and two I-185 M-82 went through front line combat testing between December of 1942 and January of 1943. Speed and climb rate of this prototype were vastly superior to all contemporary Soviet fighters. However due to political reason and lobbying from Polikarpov’s enemies the project never entered production and was cancelled.

    Advantages:

    Excellent speed characteristics

    Excellent climb rate

    Ease of control

    Powerful armament

    Disadvantages:

    Uncomfortable throttle lever

  2. you got to compare an apple with an apple mate, and not with a banana

Wasn't really making a comparison of the two directly. Just a round-about way of saying that for $200 a 9800 Pro is a steal.

  3. Upgrading my 64 mb TI4200. For $250, I can buy either a 128 mb ATI 9800 Pro or a 128 mb MSI FX5900XT. What do you recommend? Thanks.

ATI or nvidia, it really all comes down to personal choice and financial limitations in the end. I've used both brands over the years (along with other obscure companies), but I keep coming back to ATI.

I just got a 128 MB 9800 Pro to replace my 128 MB FX 5200. The difference is night and day. Granted the 5200 is no performance card, but it is not a total bottom-feeder either. I could get anywhere from 17-50 FPS in GR with all the settings at max., shadows all on with the 5200. The same settings with the 9800 Pro and I'm seeing 80-120 FPS. The 9800 Pro (for me at least) has made GR a brand new game! Best $200 (US) I've ever spent. So if you live in the US get to your local BestBuy and pick one up before the May 8th. Store price $249 - $30 in-store discount and a $20 ATI mail-in rebate.

Side note: I really feel bad though, the main reason I got the 9800 Pro was not for playing GR but for playing IL-2: FB - AEP :D

  4. The B-25's are going to be in the upcoming patch for FB:AEP. And the bonus is that they WILL be flyable!!! :D

The manual was printed long before the game was out of beta testing. Both the manual and the box also say 20 new aircraft... when it is really 29.

    Edit:

And we will be getting a desert map as well to fly those B-25's over!! The voids are out already for the B-25 as well.

  5. 1981 with a VIC-20. and eventually got a tape drive for it!! That VIC-20 was a speed demon at 1.0227 Mhz! :D Learned how to "PEEK" and "POKE" and all things that were the wonderous BASIC language, and I taught myself the inner workings of programming in machine language. I also got an expansion board for the VIC-20 that gave it a GIGANTIC 32 KB of memory in with the addition of two 16 KB cards.

I was a die hard Commodore user. First the VIC-20, then a C-64 with a 1541 5.25 inch floppy drive and a pen plotter. Next was a 300 baud acoustic modem...Holy Moley Batman!!! Then a 1581, Amiga 2000, Epson Apex 8088, Packard-Bell 386x (with FPU!!), Maintosh Quadra 700, PowerComputing PowerBase 240 Apple Clone (with a 350 Mhz PowerLogix daughter card), and many other flavors of homebuilt Windows and Linux based PC's.

    The rest is history!

  7. WOOT!!!!

Got the new job!! Got the Ace expansion!! All in the same day!! :punk:

What's really funny, I do not normally buy games. I only really played Quake at the LAN parties the computer lab had on a monthly basis. They also played WarCraft III: ROC. I tried it once and got totally hooked on it, and bought WarCraft III: TFT the day it was released.

Then at a friends house one day he showed me Ghost Recon... The rest as they say is history, I bought, I played, I found this great forum here!! :D

Then you people here have an IL-2 Sturmovik thread.... You all posted screen shots of this wonderous flight sim, I was hooked and bought the only thing I could find, the original IL-2. I loved it, then I ordered IL-2:FB from Amazon a few weeks later. And today I was calling all the local stores to see if they had the expansion in... "UPS arrives in the afternoon" I was told.... ARGGHHHHH!!!! I get off work and go straight to my interview, on the way I start calling again. Yep, it is on the shelf!!

Not any more!! It's in my hands!!

BTW, the expansion is SWEET!!! 29 new planes (not 20!!)

  8. Will be on store shelves 3/3/2004 (US)!!! Yeah!

After work I will be going for an interview with a new Chef and after that stopping at my local software stores and the first one with it on the shelf will be the one that I buy it from! :D

  9. why buy AV software and bog a system down.

You don't have to buy. There are quality free AV products available. As for bogging a system down, I would like to see statistics to vindicate such a claim. I would suggest that if a system was so overloaded that running AV was causing system depravation, they'd be better switching off their instant messaging or countless other processes before shutting down AV.

Yes, there are some good FREE AV programs out there. I personally prefer to not run any process that I do not need.

Avoiding a virus is common sense, I agree totally with you guys there. What you are all forgetting is that common sense is far from common.

    In my earlier post:

That's funny! I had a Chef at one point in time that called it "Uncommon Sense". He felt that common sense has gone by the wayside and that the few that do have it are uncommon.

And I agree with that Chef 100%

Preaching anti AV is a public forum is irresponsible in my eyes. If more people had the common sense to install AV, perhaps you would not face the labourious task of maintaining 250+ filters in your e-mail client.

Nope, no preaching here (looks around quickly for a soapbox to stand on). Quick check shows 357 filters I have at the moment. None of them are for blocking any virus. 98% are for blocking spam and the other 2% move mail to the correct folder. I have had a domain(s) since 1992, and on a daily average I get close to 800 pieces of spam per day.

The MSBlast Worm was also discovered and described by the major anti-virus software vendors on the same day, and any up-to-date AV package will identify it.

Things that make you go Hmmmmm... no wild virus, no selling of AV software. Ever wonder?

  10. Common sense is the best Anti-Virus tool around.

That's funny! I had a Chef at one point in time that called it "Uncommon Sense". He felt that common sense has gone by the wayside and that the few that do have it are uncommon.

  11. You run a PC without an AV protection?

As do I. I have not ever seen the need to use AV software. Seems counter productive to me. I've been involved in computers since 1982ish and I can count all the viri that I have gotten since then and only use three fingers. :)

And if you consider that now the AV software companies now release free stand alone "tools", why buy AV software and bog a system down.

One was on my Mac, that came on a CD from a Mac magazine company. Another I got my Mac was from a clients floppy disk. And the third was about 5 years ago on my PC (also from an infected floppy disk).

I accept no attachments via e-mail. I accept no HTML e-mail. I have close to 250 filters set up in my e-mail program. And what I consider to be most important I do not use any *file sharing* programs (they should be named virus sharing programs, few people *share* legally owned software/music anyway.... but that is not a discussion topic I want to get into at the moment)
