  1. At 200 meters does the wind flags really matter? With most rifles no, not even with something as small as a 22. (for killing at least... for target it would to keep you in the bullseye centered.

at 200 yards with a 20 mph fishtailing quartering tailwind, yes it does, when your trying to cover a 5 shot group with a quarter. Thats me. The crowd I shoot with will put 5 rounds in and it looks like the same hole. Scoring revolves around measuring the largest didtance between hole centers and subtracting the bullet diameter, lowest score wins. Now they are mostly shooting $1000+ compitition bench guns and have been competing longer than I have had a drivers lience, but I hold my own with a home built AR with a varmit barrel.

Also, the both eyes open is standard CQB. Modern day optics like the Aimpoints, ACOGs, and Elans, EOtech's are based on this principal. Basically because the optic is non-paralaxing, and assuming it is sighted correctly, if you can put the dot on the target, you hit the target no matter if the dot is way to one side of the optic, near the top, or centered. This allows for odd cheak welds, bulky clothing/armor binding you up when you mount the gun. Both eyes open allows you to retain your wide FOV with the red dot superimposed in the center. It's called the "Bindon Aiming Concept".

On my SHTF gun, I had an ACOG TA01NSN but sold it because while it uses the bindon concept, it has a 4x zoom on it and it gave me a headache having a 4x zoomed in core in the center of my FOV. While a great optic, it just didnt work for me and my eyes. I have since switched to a Aimpoint CompM3 and really enjoy it.

Having said that, I am a target shooter and hunter and sometimes competitive 3-gun shooter. I shoot for fun. I pray I never have to fire a shot in defense of myself or another, but with the way the world is going.....who knows. Hopefully saner heads prevail.

  2. Do you shoot with both eyes open?

Yes, both eyes open. Right eye on the scope, left eye watching the wind flags, waiting for the condition. BTW, watching wind flags in Kansas is an experence.

I poited this out before GRAW went demo an got BBQ'd for it but the way they have the aiming set up is a right hand shooter aiming with his left eye, you rend to look cross aim-line unless you hit the zoom key, which then wipes out your perifieral (sp?) vision.

  3. Seriously, did anyone here expect a "full" game after only 14 months

For $49.99 your damn skippy I did.

I played the demo and enjoyed it.

I got the actual game on the day of release and spent the next 4 hours going ######?

I mean I liked the game play, the feel, the sights and the sounds. Hell I could almost smell Mexico (havign been there several times in my life Mexico has a smell, spicy and gritty sort of thing) I wanted to love the game. Are there problems yes, lots and they have been hashed out here and other places to death. My top gripes are the lack of COOP, the 4 man setup, the dead leader crap, weapon choices leave a lot to wonder at (like the M8 and a 1000+ yard plus sniper weapon when the engagement zone is inside of 200 yards) and anything and everything to do with that junk called gamespy.

I game with a group of 20 or so people, some who I have gamed with since the mid 90's, and for us [GR] was COOP and having fun and verbally sticking it to eachother when we did dumb things (greades hitting door frames anyone?). As of now, we cant do that in GRAW. I'm not sure we ever will. So I told them to hold off, the game has rediculous PC specs, has really no MP, and has a lot of problems. Will they be fixed? who knows. I really dont blame Grin (other than the weapons) but I trust Ubi about as far as I can throw my dog, and I dont throw my dog anywhere. In my experence, they have a long tradition of screwing things up game wise.

  4. Sorry to keep this Prone thing alive but I was in the Demo last night (I picked up the FULL game at lunch today....BestBuy FTW!) and I noticed something odd with the prone bug.

I was on the SAW and I dropped prone and the Crosshairs in normal and super Xray vision zoom mode were level with the far horizon....i.e. I could shoot them in the feet if I wanted. But if I looked up with the sight.....when I came back down to level....bang!....I hit the artificial plane thing and now I'm aiming over their heads.

This is a bug, not a design feature. And for those that are saying "you cant shoot that low when prone yada...yada...." Last weekend I took my AR out and put a 30 rd mag in it and was able to shoot into the ground at a wood stake 10 yards away from a tactical prone position......any closer and yes the gun would post on the mag but I could do it easy at 10 yards. I'd say is is a minor bug at most, easy to fix.

  5. Other than being a GR fan, I am an avid flight simmer. One of the sims that has helped fill the void between GR releases has been the IL2 series et al. There is a new add-on payware for this game and Ubi has decided to sneek more stuff onto our PC.

You buy this DL from Ubi and after buying it and getting a key, you install and the installer puts Boonty Box on your system. People on Sim HQ have looked at it and think it is automatic updater that only looks for whatever game it is tied to. I guess one of the main problems I have with it is that once again, there is no indication of the install, and that even it you delete it....it reinstalls it self on the next boot unless you get into the registry and find all the places it hides itself. Others have reported that even after paying for the software, and gettign a DL key, the Boonty Box thing required you to pay again because it wont reconize the current valid key. Some have problems.....some dont. It almost sounds like Starforce all over again.

One has to wonder if Ubi will put this type of system in with GRAW in order to get patches and updates and what headaches this will cuase us.

  6. theres no OTS view in the pc version bud

In GR1, our view was on the sight line...ie....right handed shooter with right eye ON the sights directly. Now we are above the sightline (which is a improvement) but in this picture.......

    http://fz.se/bildarkiv/image.php?id=24927

What eye are you aiming thru as a right handed shooter? Take a gun if you have one, or a baseball bat or a tube or a yardstick....whatever, and put it in a firing position, line up like you are on sights, and then close one eye and then the other.....which eye left or right more closely duplicates the sight picture in that pic? Thats right the left eye does. If it was the right eye, and assuming the ghost has the gun at the shooting position, he would be looking down the sight line. We are currently, as depicted in that and other pics clearly shooting CQB from the left eye and focused/zoomed shooting from the right eye with optical zoomign glasses on the right eye.

It may be exactly OTS, but it still OTsomething......

  7. I get your point now, B-6. IMO, it may be a matter of making a better game. If you center the site off both eyes and your dominate eye takes over then it would be the same aspect as siting with the dominate eye only. This would give you the same aspect either way just a little more of the bigger picture. Now, if you are trying to give the gamer another view with a clearer view. You can go with a off eye and give the gamer a large picture of the combat zone.

Now, let's take this a little further, if your a general and looking to improve a soldiers field of vision to give him better critical awareness and keep accuracy, wouldn't you see if you can get tech assistance to gain that off eye view with tech assisted targeting. *shrugs*

I dont think you are following me here. It is tough to describe in words what you see with a CQB scope when you are using both eyes. With the optic mounted as far foreward as is comfortable (this is a comfort thing, and sometimes dictated by other equipment mounted on the top rail, NV equipment, BUIS, etc) you have as large of sight picture as you would have if you were using the iron sights, with 2 catches. 1st is that the red dot is much eaiser for the eye to see when over a dark background....like a torso. 2nd, if it is a quality optic, with non-parallaxing lenses, then you dont have to attain the consistan cheekweld, head position, eye posistion like you do with standard iron sights or a magnified scope. If the optic has been zero'd, then even if the dot is all the way to the right and top of the optic circle, the dot is still the point of impact and thus on target give or take the zero range. With both eyes open you have full view foreward minus the componets of the optic/FSB

With a ACOG it is a little different because now the sight picture has a magnified center due to the magnification of the optic, but you approch it the same way and the magnified portion of the sight picture kinda floats there with the reticle and the zoomed area over the target. Go to a gun show and look thru one. Make sure it is a named brand like Aimpoint, the 30$ red-dots are not non-parallaxing so the dot needs to be centered in the optic....thus the 30$ price tag.

  8. agentkay...........

    1st link was dead.

The 2nd link is not an ACOG. It is a EcoTech.

And since you are being snooty....how exactlly are you getting that up close view of said EcoTech when it is positioned about 7-8 inches away from your nose? Zoomable eyeware?

You have never had a sight like that in you hands on a rifle before correct? It's not Realistic as you state....its console-ish.

  9. Has the GRIN team commented on this yet?  I would especially like to hear their thoughts on this one.

We Bo did comment that I didnt know how to program and that I may be an armchair commando. But I do think that was a defensive reaction because I was a little harsh in my opening post.

While I have not used any of this stuff in a life or death situation or the military, I am someone who has used these items and do so on a regular basis.

  10. Sort of........Puros

If in your example, you have both eyes open and are on the sight (gun at the shooting position and you are on the sights) then the reticle for the optic should overlay the GR1 reticle. Your example is what happens when you close one eye or the other, you have one dominate eye (mine is rightside dominate) which really helps in a both eyes open sighting, the Dominate eye superceeds the weaker eye. I had a hunting buddy who was right handed but left eye dominate and for the longest time he could not hit water even if he fell out of a boat. He was always behind the bird or way in front, because as you pointed out, hes left eye was changing his persepctive. He had to train his eyes to not do that and he is now a heck of a shot.

But what I am now gathering is that with the OTS view we have, it cant be done. I think this is what Bo was saying about balence. If that is the case then in that view (OTS) the reitcle in the EcoTech should not be visable. In my minds eye it is giving me 2 aimpoints. Because, having learned to shoot with a real one, my eyes are drawn to it looking for the sight picture. But if it is a game issue then so be it.

The zoom thing might be solved by not having a zoom factor take place with a non-scoped, non magnified optic. The animation remains the same but with no zooming your nose to the optic. In other words, you go to the shooting position, and are on the sights but there is no zoom effect or lost sight picture.

But heck its maybe too late for that also.

  11. I assume the retcles can be changed thru mods, at least they were with GR1.

I love all these people saying realisim is not important when for the last 3+ years we have been screaming for it, and is pretty much why GR2 got canned. If because of the OTS view they cant get the red dots to "present" right...then thats fine, its a game issue. But the zoom thing is strange unless the ghosts have wet-ware mods to the eyes.

I guess I will just have to suspend my dis-belief when I'm running a red dot in game.

  12. Ok Bo. I think I came off stronger than I wanted to. If it's a game/balence playability issue then thats ok. It is just something that really bugged the heck out of me in GR1 and the RVS series. That and I hate that GR1 reticle :P

I shoot just about every weekend here once the temp gets up to the point you dont loose feeling in your fingers (because whats the fun in that?) and I am bleesed that I have a family friend who has a 200 yard range in his backyard. Yes the joys of rual Kansas. This summer I will begin shooting NRA Highpower on the service rifle side. I am currently working up loads for it, when the Kansas wind cooperates (last weekend I gave up when the gusts got to 40 mph) And I have used EcoTechs, ACOG's and Aimpoints in the past for sport shooting and 3 gun matches, and as I said my SHTF gun has a Aimpoint ML-2 on it. So I understand and have used the concept.

On the XM8, yes I believe it will still have problems because it has been dropped from trials because of poor performance. You are correct, they fixed the heating/melting of the handguards and the upper reciever, but now it weighs over 14 lbs empty which is about what an M14/M1A comes in around. The XM8 debacle is where the SCAR came out of. While I think the buttstock on the scar is uber ugly, if it works in the field then it works, and initial reports are that it is doing well. I did like how it seems that ya'll are using a Novesky style flash hider on the that SCAR in the one pic. A couple of weekends ago I got to play with a 10.7" "Afgan" AR shorty CQB rifle and it had one of those on it, very effective at deflecting the sound and flash down range instead of at those beside you.

ANyway Bo, bottom line none of this is going to keep me from buying GRAW. It just bugs me is all.

  13. I can see that they still insist on that ugly/useless stock GR1 reticle for anything other than zoom mode. Disapointing that Bo and crew seem to have missed the concept of both eyes open aimed fire. Shooting from the carry position is for gang bangers which is what is implied by the GR1 reticle and the weapon at carry or low ready. When you are in the stack or moving, you have the weapon up at the ready and are on the sights, not telescoped thru the peep or optics, you have both eyes open and are scaning your zone, once you see a target, you narrow the focus but you leave both eyes open. This is the whole concept of the red dot tactical sighting system. What this pic implies is that you are shooting from the ready position and not using any sights...ie Using the Force.

Hey it might be a limitation of the way things are viewed in a PC game, because you cant yet duplicate the human eye and the periferial vision aspect (at least I dont think you can) and if that is the case so be it. Bo can answer that.

This same pic of the EcoTec and the truck/badguy is a prime example, the optic has the aimpoint at the tire but the GR1 reticle is far to the left behind the vehicle.

    http://fz.se/bildarkiv/image.php?id=24927

Optics like Apoints and ACOGs, EcoTec's have a non-paralaxing lense setup. Meaning if the optic is zero'd per say USMC 25m battle zero, then it does not matter where your head/eye is in relation to the optic....if you can see the dot, the dot is point of aim/point of impact. This is the halmark of CQB optics, fast both eyes open targeting.

That picture is showing me 2 things. One is that while the shooter is right handed, he is verymuch left eye dominate.

    http://fz.se/bildarkiv/image.php?id=24931

Second, the Devs dont understand CQB optics. You dont zoom into a CQB optic....it is always there, just like your FSB or Front Irons, and if that front iron is up and in the vertical position, it should co-witness the optic. Even on a ACOG with it's fixed 3x, you dont zoom and you leave both eyes open and the reticle (the donut of death or the triangle of death in a ACOG) will super-impose itself over the target, point of aim....ie/ the dot....equals point of impact. What the above pic implies is that somehow the shooter has moved his head foarward on the gun to the point of almost having his nose touch the optic, remember that the optic is mounted as far forward on the upper rail, and in the case of a SCAR somewhere right at the barrel nut beacuse of the continuous top rail. When I had a EcoTech 1500 mounted on my SHTF (S*(feces)Hits The Fan) AR, the end of the optic cover actually hung over the end of the upper reciever in thegap between the reciever and the handguard. I have since gone to a Aimpoint ML-2 setup with the optic mounted as far foreward on the rail as possable with a canatlever 1" foreward as well. This allows me to retain a larger sight picture and co-witnesses my FSB irons. There is no ZOOMING for these type of optics. Aimpints are 1x, as are EcoTechs. ACOG's are 3X fixed but you use them the same way, both eyes open. Only difference is that the area defined by the eyepiece is at 3x surrounded by normal 1x views (ie...mark 1, Mod 0, eyeballs). It is called the "Bindon Aiming Concept" After all this delay....frankly I was kinda expecting a better understanding of shooting mechanics.

Somebody is seriously not doing their home work. But eyecandy wise it looks amazing.

Also dont get me started over that POS XM8. Did they model in the forearms and upper reciever melting? There is a reason why the Army has dropped it....by the time they got it properly sheilded for the heat....it weighed more than a loaded M14.

  14. Damit Bo....you are killing me. I was just about to purchase either a Kimber or Wilson Combat 1911 in the next month or so. Mainly because Kansas just passed (overrode a veto) on the CCW bill. Now with these screens and all the goodness you are showing with GRAW, I have to decide between a new vidcard/cpu upgrade or personal defense firearm or both......yikes....decsions aplenty. All this on top of just buiding 2 new uppers for my AR (a varmint bull and a SPR/SDMr upper).....I think I'm going to have to sell a kidney or something.

Keep up the awesome work. I love the way this is shaping up but I repeat....you are killing me :P

  15. I also use the N52 Speed pad by Belkin

I use the 4 way hat for"

Up = Comms (push to talk)

    Down = Switch Weaps

    Right = Command Map

    Left = Binocs

I'm a big HOTAS fan so I also use the N52 for CFS3, IL2(et al), MW4(et al) and Freelancer

When flying IL2 I combine my half assed HOTAS setup with my IRTracker2 and it is very immersive.

I tried my IRTracker2 with GR and got very dizzy not to mention I could not hit water if I fell out of a boat with it.

  16. Ok, it was a cookie thing.....I think. I still get that "Account" screen at home but at work yesterday I created a new account and freaking paid for the fast download and lo and behold it worked so I burned a cd at work (blanet mis-use of office supplies and all that) and got to play with all the cool M14's and such.

But even if you go to the fileplanet mods page then to GR then into that menu.....none of this stuff shows up.

It must be a cookie thing as my home PC is locked up tight to keep all the crap out when I'm online gaming and stuff.

    very strange.

  17. Nope...........every link leads to the "Gee we merged and we are all wonderful page....donate your spleen and such"

I go to mods...then GR series....then it lists 9 weapons mods. It is not found in any other catagory. I know Thumper makes kick ass mods but if they want cash to D/L it (they being FP not Thumper) then I'll just have to be happy with the stuff I have from the end of 2003 and be done with it.

  18. so far after spending about an hour of my life looking for Thumpers 7.62mm mod....File planet has lost it. It is no longer there and niether are the 2 updates.

If someone has some insite......I'm all ears but I hope Thumper knows they seem to have lost his work.
