welcome back there chems,
hope you had a nice vacation.. wtg on those exams.

I have managed to make some progress w/ that little project
you left me off with, it would've been done by now if it weren't for
all the troubles w/ the new pc. My appologies.
My friend jhereg told me it's possible there's a corrupted file
on the xp cd he gave me. So that might be what's stopping me
from installing it. He had me try installing win '98 and that worked
fine. He's sending me another xp cd so I'll be able to try it again
later on this week.

Hey, I am a huge SST fan (movie, series ,etc. ,look at my av.), and this mod is looking really good, great work Chems! I always hoped a SST 1st person shooter/mod would be made!
guess i'm a bit late, 21 pages behind
(how come I never heard of this forum?) better late than never I always say.
Chems should be back today actually.
an update to my ongoing computer nightmare: I can get into the bios
but I can't install windows xp due to my ram being incompatible w/
this new gigabyte board.
Someone figured out the problem w/ the Asus board. They removed the
heatsink retaining bracket.. , it's that square piece of plastic that the retaining arms hook into, and found a solder point hadn't been cleaned
during the manufacturing process. This leads to it being smushed down
when you apply the pressure of a heatsink fan. It flattens out and hits
another solder point causing the board to short out in that area.
This in turn causes a lack of power to the cpu which causes the cpu
to fail it's test. Hence you get "system failed cpu test" from the vocal post.
I'm calling Asus Monday Morning. I'm requesting a new board. I plan
to rma the new gigabyte board back to the retailer because it's limitations
prevent me from using it. It's cheaper to get the asus board replaced
rather than buying a gb of new memory.. I might have this computer working
by christmas if I'm lucky.

hehe, right
"
" hey stalker,
just cause I'm of a curious nature, could you tell me how that
2nd word is pronounced in english? Does it sound like an english word.
Like I've heard what sounds like danka shay or danka shane.. is that
how sehr should sound?
-
Danke sehr stalker ,
hope I said that right..hehehe

I'm a noob when it comes to computer building, a friend who's an IT specialist actually
built the pc for me at my house while I looked on. He made all the necessary settings
in the bios. I don't think he adjusted the memory and cpu settings but I could be wrong.
Cause when we ran sisoft sandra, the memory was showing up as pc 3200 which was
incorrect. It's 3700. But I think by default, the bios usually starts out w/ conservative
settings.
Anyway, it wasn't anything that my friend or I did wrong, it's the mobo.
I know there's a lot of people using the asus p4c800 and haven't had any trouble
with it. Great, they're lucky, cause there's also a number of people that have had
problems, the same problem as me. They found they could resolve it though by
filing down the retention arms a bit. This is a crude way of easing off on the amount
of presure be placed against the cpu. It's worked for those that did it, but I didn't
wanna do it.
I got the new mobo today as expected.
Spent the night installing the cpu, cpu heatsink fan, memory, and video card.
Afterwards I hooked it up to the monitor and keyboard.
I crossed my fingers and hit the power button.
Houston We Have Post!!! Thank God!

I spent some time changing some of the settings in the bios.
Now I'm gonna get some sleep and continue in the morning.
Hope I have better luck w/ this one.
-
expecting a new mobo today. Let's hope this one works better than the 1st one
so I can get back to work on this mod.
It's a Gigabyte GA-8knxp for all you computer builders out there.
The the 1st one was the Asus p4c800. It ran great after the pc was built.
I was very impressed.. until I shut it down and found that it wouldn't start back
up again.

-
It's the new pc, monitor works fine with the old computer.
Would the failure of a hard drive cause me to not get a signal
on the monitor?
-
A friend came over and built my pc on Sat.
It was an all day affair. Finally had it up and running with
all the hardware installed and the os installed.
He then downloaded some bench marking software.
Sisoft sandra and future mark 3d.
The score on sandra was in the ball park compared to
similar systems.
score = 5765
I ran the burn in on sandra over night.
This afternoon I stopped it after 14 hrs.
I clicked around in xp checking out the menus and stuff..
my 1st time seeing xp.
I shut down the pc.
I set up a kvm.
Started my old computer and the kvm worked fine.
When I started the new pc I could hear a high pitched
tone, just a straight tone non-stop.
The monitor is flashing a No Signal screen.
Shut down both pcs.
Unhook the kvm and run the monitor directly to the new pc.
Start it up and the same thing. A loud straight high pitched tone.
I shut down again.
Removed the side panel and started the new pc again.
Same tone. All fans working properly. Even the fan on the vid card
is working.
Shut down the new pc.
Pulled out the video card and stuck it in my old pc.
The old pc booted fine. SO it's not video card.
Even started the new pc w/ no video card. Same loud sound.
Switched the twinx modules, took them out of the black slots
and put them into the blue. Still the same loud high pitched
tone. I'm stumped. I'll try calling Asus to see if they can
give me some help. Anyone got any ideas ?
Just a reminder:
p4 3.2 ghz
asus p4c800 mobo
ati all in wonder 9800
1 gb of corsair twinx 3700 467 mhz
1 80 gb western digital to boot and run main apps from.
2 80 gb western digital set up in a raid0 stripe array.
highpoint rocket raid 404 raid controller.
pwr supply = antec true blue 480.
case= thermaltake xaser III
CPU heat sink/fan= thermaltake spark 7.
sony dru - 510a dvd -r/+r -rw/+rw cdrw
Sony floppy drive.
LG electronics cdrw
I sent something to asus letting them know, maybe they'll know
something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine came over yesterday and put together my new computer for me.
It was an all day affair, the system is pretty complex. Afterwards we ran some benchmarks.
On future mark it scored 5765 which was pretty much in the ball park compared to other
systems. I set up a kvm today and everything has turned ugly now. The new computer
only makes a loud pitched noise and won't boot, no video signal as well.

Can't even enter the bios.

sorry, chems is the boss...
but I can tell you that the layout of the mapis suited well in my opinion for not only sp missions but mp as well
and for me, as far as maps go, it's going to be better than anything else
I've done so far but this is only my 2nd real map. Chems came up with
the design and I'm just trying to match what he had in mind as well as possible, I've tried to embelish it in some ways as well..
-
I see, so, yesterday, when you said you had a virus, you meant your computer? Here I am thinking you're sick.

Btw, the new cpu is for the new pc I'm building. Possibly will be working
on it this weekend. Once It's done I can return to working on the map.
-
ah... I thought redsun had been released. Thanks and good luck
with the project.
-
ah! so there's actually a word for what I've been doing for the past
7 years.

-
I've been chatting in chat rooms and posting on message boards
for about 7 yrs now and it's very embarrassing to say that after all this
time I still don't understand what that term "bump" means.

Harntrox,
normally isn't you that has the responsibilty of contacting those
modders whose work you wish to use?
I've seen other modders propose similar kinds of projects and make similar
announcements saying unless you contact me saying you don't want
your work used I will assume I have your consent and will credit you.
Other modders would then jump in warning that the modder needs
to contact those whose work he wishes to use because it's not the
content creators responsibility to know what other modders are planning
to use their work for.
It doesn't involve me, but if it did I wouldn't even care.. Someone else might not feel the same way though and it seems the only way he/she has of learning of what you're intending to do is to come by and read your post.
Is this a different set of circumstances?
Is it assumed that any work used in Drag mods belongs to Drag and therefore crediting individual modders for their work isn't a priority, much
less asking their consent?
Hope you don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to make trouble, just sighting
what seems to be a past precedence amoungst the modding comunity
so please don't flame me.

just to expand on deleyt's very detailed help, regarding the boolean part of the operation,
you can do this with textured objects. I did it with a tree that was already textured and took
a smaller tree that was textured and booleaned it to the larger tree. It worked fine.
edit: When I say tree I mean trunk, I didn't boolean anything that was grouped.

patience everyone...

Awww thanks shiver, but you know ppl hes a bit of a dark horse. You should see his map and the textures he can create, there awesome! Wait till you guys see his map then youll be wondering whos the boss of this project! Also ive got another two emails from Jack57 saying hes making even more progress, man has that guy got a sharpe mind. I have to read it twice to keep up. Thanks team!
Me? no way...I suck... but maybe someday, yes...someday
NAAAA!!!!!!! What the hell was I thinkin!?
:punk:

starship troopers hasn't been released yet so none of us can get it but
you'll need ghost recon to play it.
chems, the special thing that you're talking about, is that the thing
you showed me? The one where I told you I said "Oh! Oh! Oh! WoW!"
If so, then I think everyone's gonna be in Shock & Awe when they
see what it is... I meant to tell you that earlier but forgot.
I have to say , you are really amazing, I wouldn't be surprised to see
you get offered a job with a game company...and to think you've only
been at it a short while.

-
thanks rocky.

-
In the Stereo Properties Panel, there is a HUGE a-z of games, each one rated for it's performance in 3-D.
If anyone wants me to look up a particular title's rating just ask. It doesn't list RVS or Splinter Cell, so the last update was maybe a few months ago - but at least you can check your collection out

Homeworld doesn't run in 3-d at all which is a shame.
rocky,
can u look up how MW4 Mercs "Rates" on the system ..
thanks,
-
do americans use that word? I've never heard it before.
why is chems laughing at me ?

nice job so far.

I really like this new gigabyte mobo... I wanna keep it, but I'm still
going to ask asus to replace or fix the asus mobo. Cause now with
win 98 running on it, it tells me win xp should work also.
I read a post where someone just took the hsf retention bracket off
the asus mobo and used an exacto knife to cut a little channel between
the 2 solder points that were accidently making contact and it solved his problem. It no longer shorted
and the cpu was able to pass the self test.
@chems, although it's been rough lately with all the pc troubles,
I also feel good in a crazy way that I experienced this stuff... I've
learned a lot in the past few weeks. I was pretty much feeling like
I'd never try to build another pc, but not so much anymore.
I bet it's a great feeling if you learn enough about pcs to be able
to have complete control over it. Then it becomes a thing where you
want to push the envelope and see just how much performance you
can get out of it.
I wanna over clock mine once everything is running
well. Right now we have the cpu running at 3.2 ghz w/ a fsb of 800
and my twinx 3700 dimms running @ 400 mhz.
I'm seeing ppl take 2.4 ghz p4's and run them at 3 ghz with complete
stability.
I'm installing my sound card on it today along w/ the software
even though I'll be reformatting the drive again later this week
to install xp. I'm going to also set up a raid array. And I also need
to get the rest of the fans working. I have a panel w/ 2 fans that swings
out or can be removed altogether. Right now it's disconnected. Makes
it easier to install boards when it's removed completely.
I have monday off and want to try and finish that wheel for you today or tomorrow if I can. The textures are done for the most part. Now it's a matter
of applying them to the object.
