  1. Thanks! I'll check that out although I wonder if it's worth all the hasttle.

I bought my system in the US through Newegg and sending it back and forth might actually be more expensive than just buying a new one...Seagate this time.

Never had a problem with Seagate before.

It's true about the quality of harddisks these days though. Seems like the race for bigger volumes is at the expense of reliability.

It's my own fault though....I always seem to postpone on making backups....till it's too late...;)

  2. I used GetDataBack (NTFS) from Runtime Software.

I'm trying to format the old disk now but it's crashing my system everytime during formatting.

So I guess this harddisk is ready for the bin. Second time in two years that I've bought a Maxtor harddisk and crashes on me.

I'm really ###### off now, that I've not just lost my GRAW project but also a complete harddrive, only several months old.

No more Maxtor's for me. :o=

  3. Thanks for the help guys.

I was able to recover all the files I needed.

There were some files that got lost in the process but those were not of any importance to me.

    I can breathe again :)

EDIT: Damn!...I did lose some stuff I was hoping to recover: my GRAW project, Tank Revisited seems to be in shambles :wall:

I was looking forward to picking this project up again next week since I'm still off work, but I think it has been lost forever now :(

  4. Yeah, lighting seems to be off.

Looking at the top render (front of the car) the light seems to come from the left, while on the car it's slightly coming from the front-right.

Same on the bottom render. Light coming from behind the car (dawn-glow clearly visible), but on the car itself it's coming from the front.

After putting the source on the right spot it'll look genuine.

Did you use a HDRI on your skylight in these renders? Doesn't seem to be right now.

    Makes a huge difference

  5. I know GRAW isnt really a rural friendly game but i feel all the urban maps are very samey.

That's because everyone's using the bits that came with the game-editor, rather then creating their own content, which makes every map look the same.

  6. chkdsk /r can often resolve errors. unless its your boot drive, I don't see much need for the fixmbr/fixboot options though (and unless you are experienced, I wouldn't recommend using recovery console options, less you cause even more problems.)

be careful using chkdsk (and other find/fix utilities) as they can write back to the partition overwriting data that you are trying to recover and just causing you headaches.

just curious, is this partition a logical partition? are there other partitions on the same physical disk? knowing those might help in determining what the root problem is and a method of recovery

    Yes.

It's a fixed disk with 2 partitions. A primary DOS partition (C:) and an extended DOS partition being logical (D:)

No other partitions besides those two on the physical disk.

C: is working fine (at least as far as I can tell as it's properly botting). D: isn't reckognized as being formatted, so my assumption is, is that it's a boot-sector thingy.

I'm not really keen on using the chkdsk-feature. I think it might be a bit too aggresive to my likings and I really don't want to make a mistake I'll later regret.

  7. Hmmm...you know, this might just explain why so many of the car shading tutorials that I've come across speak of setting the refract value for glass to 1. With it set to 1 you shouldn't get any refraction to speak of and you wouldn't have to render that additional layer....now this I have to test

Edit: well, it worked in a way. With refract value for the glass set to 1 I got the reflections to show up properly in the headlight reflector without rendering a refract layer. However it completely whiped out the effect that the glass material's bumpmap gave to the composite...in other words it ended up looking like a headlight reflector without a glass casing infront of it.

Not sure why they tell you to set it to 1.

when the refraction is set to 1, light passing through the glass pane will move in a straight line, rendering it as if it isn't there, I think.

I usually use a setting of 1.33 for regular glass to get a neat distortion effect, without really distorting too much.

All depending on what type of glass you want to use ofcourse.

They've got some nice tables with indexes on the net, or even in the Max helpfile I believe.

Good luck with your project

  8. And secondly a composite pass (Alpha, Colour, Reflection and Background used)

No reflections inside the headlights show up.

    Glass uses refraction aswell mate.

Maybe you forgot to render out that element? :shifty:

BTW: Did you check out Combustion? It's awesome with compositing. Never really tried it before untill I had this Max9 training, just a few days ago.

Still need to download the trial, but I'm sure I'm gonna try to get the company I work for, to buy it.

  9. Ahhh!

Well that actually makes sense why the headlights aren't showing up:

Did you by any chance use that environment map within your environmental reflecting material for your car?

If yes, did you by any chance use a "scene reflective material"for your headlights?

If thát's the case, than it rather simple...when compositing, the reflection on the body of the car are taken from a seperate file (being the environment HDRI).

The headlights however are rendered using the reflecting properties of the entire scene.

When you're compostiting, the rest isn't rendered, leaving your (reflecting) raytrace-material....you've guessed it: black!.

    Just a thought.

  10. Unfortunately I don't have much in the way of decent quality hdr's in lower resolution but I'm still looking for some.

    Would that be enough? ;)

BTW: did you try rendering your car with a HDRI inside your skylight as lightdistributor? With radiosity (Scanline)it's freakin' awesome! Haven't tried that in MR though.

MR's Carpaint shader is pretty impressive too.

    Carmodel looks really good Snow.

  11. Thanks guys.

I'll check out all of them links.

I haven't saved anything on the partition after the crash...simply couldn't if I wanted to.

My system now tells me that that partition isn't formated, so it's probably the bootsector that's wiped out, rather then the entire disk.

    Fingers crossed. ;)
