This thread is done, by now unless you are incompetent (which I know you aren't) you should be able to acertain *sp what you are getting. No need to prolong this just kill it.

This is what I found for you guys YIPEE! It happens I've heard horror stories before. At work today our IT dude came in (does almost nothing) and so I went ahead and asked him. He said he had never actually seen it and all but he said it was a very possibe scenario. lol, it doesn't matter at our school, the computers are down too much and if the pieces did blow up nobody would care. We'd maybe get to upgrade from P2 machines (Terminal Services makes them a little nicer). My expierience as a professional technician in the Information-Technology industry has been thus, that clients

And them some $$$ I would at least look at a Radeon 9000 Mobility, even if you have to sacrifice in some other areas for costs. I remeber when I wanted a laptop.....
-
A little bit hypocritical eh? Anyways, heph, it sounds like you haven't gotten too in depth into linux yet. I reccommend staying in it for a weel or two and NOT TOUCHING windows at all. If you are fine and everything is to your liking then make the switch...but it would be a shame to waste money if you decide to go a different route then what you're thinking presently.

See if you can get the FX 5600 128MB GO "Card." If not then look for the Radeon 9000 Mobility. Both would be better than that. This 16mb TNT2 can barely do any games and GR is crappy on it. You can't upgrade tem yourself really at all. They are kinda like cpu's check here

Here's my favorite link more to come tomorrow...

This is high tech to say the least (btw it is real to my knowledge)http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...5&category=3762

Okay, if it wont blow anything up, phantom hook up 6 computers to one electrical circuit on your house...we'll talk to you a week or so later when you get the re-wiring done. It will blow up I've seen pics and heard stories. Phantom go google for it.
-
I love it...hunting is awesome. You weigh that big fella there yet? Nice Job man
-
Hmm never tried it, phantom should be over this way shortly so I'll let him field that one but I would guess yes *knocks on wood Have you thought about charging a nominal fee for electricity and food stuffs? That is unless they provide their own food/good friends or whatever. I would remind them all to bring some ethernet cord too unless you have lots, that is what people always seem to forget.

I say go Ti4**<-----Insert best model you can afford here. If you can find $139 u can get a Radeon 9500 BBA at newegg.com which takes on most if not all of the Ti series of cards...but nm since you want nVidia. As a word of caution though, your system is getting outdated quite a bit which I'm sure you already know and just adding a new graphics card won't last you long. DoomIII and HL2 would eat up your system Ti4*** or not. You may want to consider just pocketing the cash and hold back until you can do a whole system overhaul.

1.If I were you I would go out and buy a many(8+) port Switch. (They are UBER cheap on ebay)I've never heard of daisy chain so sorry /me feels dumb... 2.If you have too many computers on one circuit it will blow the power and screw up your electricity u bet. A friend of mine had a large lan party and put too many computers on one circuit and completly lost power. 3.Make sure people bring their own crap...but be prepared since you know somebody of course will forget something. 4.....drawin a blank

Well XP has never crashed on me, never had a corrupted screen and never shown me errors that I wasn't responisble for. There are millions of viruses and every os has them. ME sucks its the most pathetic piece of crap every to be considered an OS. I like Amiga better than ME for crying out loud. Basically you'll spend more time getting things to work right and crap in Linux then you ever would in Windows. Thats fact but its just personal preference. And XP doesn't make mistakes its the user who does. So unless YOU screw up your Winblows setup then it will run fast as hell and like a rock. Mine

Linux is only free if you don't value your time.
-
Switching to Linux....man thats a task. I'd do the same in a heartbeat if I could get guaranteed compatibility with everything as in "Winblows." But I value my time to much One day though...
-
If your not oc'ing then yeah don't worry about getting anything special ram wise. I agree the route you should go would be to get a Ti Series GF4 video card. But after that your talking a new computer so you dont waste any of your money on obsolete technologies. And XP running with 256MB of ram would be a trick of its own...I cant see xp and a game running at the same time and actually performing decent with only 256MB of ram.
-
Your kidding me But why waste money on ram that can't use it to its full potential. And if he gets a new machine in a year then he's talking DDR2 no regular ddr anymore so thats a huge waste. Kingston and Corsair and Mushkin all have lifetime warranty's. I had to RMA a stick of kingston and they sent me a new stick the VERY NEXT day. 3:00pm and I got it in the next days mail. Plus when you buy locally you are being ripped off almost everytime unless you get their cheap PNY stuff as Best Buy is so fond or peddling. That cheap stuff doesn't oc well so I don't touch it. And I'd bet on h

Thats odd. Maybe next time u do a format and clean install try it again. It isn't as "feature rich" as Opera but it gets the job done wasting minimal resources and space. And is still quite nice.
-
I don't know about mozilla, but firebird .6 doesn't that I know of unless its an extension.
-
Well heck ur in a situation Hep....your mobo could stand upgrading to allow you to get newer higher performance things. But then u don't have them. I don't even know if they make most of those performance ram's in PC2100. I'd go video card then in that case I suppose. Thx for the info Dannik.
-
I put them like this 1.Mozilla Firebird .6 2.Opera 3.Encyclopedias 4.IE6 @Phantom- Mozilla isn't all that great, pickup Mozilla Firebird .6. No installing at all, just unzip it to a folder and click the executable. Smallest browser of the 4 and it takes up almost no resources.
-
As long as you aren't overclocking you don't need anything rated above PC3200. Corsair XMS, Mushkin Black and Kingston HyperX are the 3 best brands, in that order IMO. GEIL and OCZ are just as good according to some but they have had good and crappy performances so its hard to know if they are good yet. Crucial is the best for medium grade ram, its not super fast but it holds strong. It gets used in servers the most. Hep, what motherboard do you have?
-
Id be closer to looking at another 256MB of RAM sooner than a new video card...256 is just too small in this day and age. And 8x AGP will work with 4xAGP IIRC.
-
If you are crazy enough to be using opera then go ahead and try Mozilla Firebird .6. Tabbed browsing YUM

I asked my mom if she ad forgotten to give it to me or something maybe and she pulled it out..arrgghhh /end thread hijack
