  1. Phantom,

I'll do the incredibly time-intensive removal/reinstall of GR and mods et al.

But in your last post are you speaking to me? ...or to someone else?

    I haven't had a copy of Win98 for 3 years now.

Seems like it's going a bit backward to install a Windows Operating System that predates Win2000. And after working diligently over the past year to get only products and games that are compatible with WinXP Pro, I'm not going through the counterproductive angst of trying to get several dozen programs of my hundred or so, to work with Win98 that are not designed to work with it. As a fact many of my programs will NOT work with Win98, as many advanced feature sets were never made available to the Win98 operating system.

As far as bad sectors on my H:drive, which is my dedicated Games drive of my seven (7) h.d.d.'s in my computer (...well some drives are in my computer tower and some are out, but all are connected to the mainboard or a daughter card...) I may have one or more bad sector but other than GR, no other game which is resident on my H:games drive evidences any problems at all.

You could be right on this issue of sector damage, as has been suggested previously in this thread...sooooooo...I hope that my slightly older version of Norton Disk Doctor works with WinXP...lost my job recently so I ain't payin' out $40 for any program at the moment, updated or otherwise...hope not to lose my home during this time of desperate finances... :(

I actually have Norton Disk Doktor ... for Win2000 I think, but it had the nasty habit of poping up at inopportune times and ripping me outta games...so I finally deleted that and have used only Norton's Antivirus program recently.

    Thanks for the input Phantom.

  2. X69,

Actually as you can see in my own screen shot...I do not have either of those files.

So we may be onto something. Sherlock Holmes I'm clearly not...but you just may have provided a lead that is remarkably well directed.

I have reinstalled GR 2 or 3 times...but perhaps another reinstall is the right way to go...but cheesh that does take a lot of time...reinstalling GR/IT/DS/Frostbite...

Hope all the mods don't get lost or corrupted.

    Thanks for the clues, X.

  3. White,

Yes I have a few other programs...a golfing game, flight sim, Battlefield 1942 (I don't play this ever...it doesn't have half the 'class' inherent to GR), O.R.B., Homeworld Cataclysm, Raven Shield and maybe 3 others. The 60 GB drive is my games-only drive.

I have no problems with any other games...only with GR.

Sometimes I cuss at GR...even though it is my favorite game. As a fact I can't stand the lagginess of Raven Shield and I don't even play it. Even without the lag problems, GR wins hands down because of the player set up and mobility during the game. I won't go into the differences but GR is my game of choice.

X69RZX, I will scan those two nasty sounding files... and see what I can gleen from within notepad.

    Thanks for the input.

  4. White,

I am forced to run Scan disk and Check disk very very often. Ghost Recon has forced this unfortunate recurrence. There is ALWAYS something corrupted in the H:games/Ghost Recon folder.

Sometimes check disk and scan disk have to "repair" files...as many as several HUNDRED GR files.

And if I don't allow scan disk to operate then the blasted popup warning or error messages appear for all the hours or days I have my computer up and running...thus I certainly run scan and check disk when XP wants to run them.

And yes I have completely cleared my 60 GB drive twice, and reinstalled clean new copies of GR/IT/DS.

That has never done any good. Nothing has ever changed with respect to the scan disk/check disk problems.

But having said that, until last month I was always able to host GR. I do not have any wierd mods installed...only GR/IT/DS and now Frostbite...but that last mod has nothing to do with anything as that was installed only yesterday and the problems of crashing to desktop have been happening for 2 months.

    :(

    Geforce 4 Ti4600 128 Mb Ram

    SB Audigy

    1 GB of DDR Ram

7 hard drives from 60 GB to 200 GB

GR is on the 60 GB 7200 rpm Maxtor drive.

Cable Internet connection rated at 3.5 Mb/s...sometimes it exceeds 5.5MB/s

    Windows XP Pro

There are two events which cause GR to puff out of existence, leaving me sitting stairing at my desktop.

    1) When I try to host a game...something I used to do often...as soon as I click on the "CREATE A GAME" button, the game disappears and I end up looking at my desktop.

    2) When in another host's HX game, as soon as he starts one particular map...HX de Dust...when the game starts I go straight to desktop. My game is no longer running.

I neither case do I get error messages. In the latter case I can play all the other maps of that same host. Usually I wait for a few minutes then rejoin. I can join and wait in the host's game lobby even as that map is being played. But I just can't join it from the beginning.

In the latter case, I have completely deleted the HX mods within GR. After that I have reinstalled the HX4 mod. All maps work except for HX_de Dust.

I re-downloaded a "fresh copy" of HX4, but after a clean install, I am still sent directly to desktop when that particular map is used in any host's game.

I let my friends down by not being able to be there when that map starts.

And others have come to depend on my dependable hosting, but no longer can I host a game.

No other clues seem to be present to offer anyone here. But any reasonable suggestions would be appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

    Proto / Snapper
