You laugh... We just shipped a crate of those out to the Rangers yesterday! You know those guys... always have to have the coolest gear!!

J/K
Anyway, I've make a lot of improvements on my M4 mod. I've dropped the poly's down to around 1700 (from 5000!!!) - so I guess you could say that I'm getting back into the groove.
Right now, I have a base model, and a SOPMOD with ACOG and rail system.
The ACOG was a ###### at first... but I figured out how to cut out polys and it's down to around 500...
Hopefully, I can figure out how to export these correctly and test them out by this weekend...

Hey guys... I'm having trouble exporting this weapon... I'm not sure I have the correct files in the correct spots. Is there a detailed tutorial out there somewhere? Or can someone guide me through this?
Thanks

Again... the crew at GR.net is psychic!! I have a drum in the works, as well as a rail system.
Here in Tampa we just had SOFWEEK, a huge convention for the SOCOM community. I have CD catalogs from FN, H&K, Colt, etc. talk about some high-quality photos! I'll do what I can to get them posted for everyone's use.
The other great thing about SOF Week was that they have EVERY weapons there. I got to see some of the nooks and crannies that you can't normally see.
More to come this weekend!

Greetings all... busy week in the real word, but I've been able to make some strides in this mod... This is going to be my base model.
This was my very first attempt at a sight and using transapansies...
What are your thoughts?

I'm going to be jumping out of planes until Friday evening, so I won't be back until then.
Well, how's this look? I took a couple of liberties in design, but it was mostly to get back into the swing of things.
I figured out textures (pretty much)... Thanks for the help Stalker and everyone...
That's what I remember (and like) about this community - everyone helps everyone... no one is keeping little secrets to make themselves look better - true team work!

Anyway, This weekend and next week I'll add things like an M203, a Masterkey, etc. SOPMODs are a dime a dozen these days... I'll come up with something.
One thing I could use help with is hunting down high quality M4 / M16 photos - any leads?
See you Friday.

Their combined military might should be more than a match for the U.S. miltary right? Or at least close to it. So then they would feel powerful too. And eventually, or at least there is a possibility, that one day there might be a conflict between the U.S. and the United States of Europe (U.S.E.)
I think that a European TF wouldn't be that effective. Former Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James Jones just took over as SAC-NATO and EuCom Commander, and he is having problems getting the NATO guys to "figure it all out". Plus, none of these nations have any real combat experiance anymore...
And I agree - no one can say that something is "crazy" or "impossible". I watched two jets crash into the WTC live on TV - NOTHING is impossible!

Hey all... my last couple of posts didn't get posted - Wierd...
Anyway. My M4 is around 2000 polys, too big, I know. It looks great (IMHO
) - BUT...I now remember one of the things that made me leave the modding biz - TEXTURES!!! I am about ready to put my fist through the monitor!!!
I finally figured out how to get the texture onto the object, but something weird happens, (I hope I can explain this right...)
I want to texture the side of the weapon (the side with the fire select). When I get into the UVW Map Edit screen I see the bitmap I want, but the map is for the front of the mesh, not the side? Get it? Is there a way to rotate that around? Any help GREATLY appreciated...
Also - @Hitman - you were almost there - (ver 4.2) in the Modify rollout there is a choise called "Cap Ends" (I think). That worked... you got me on the right path though - thanks.
A VERY frustrated Gunny Out.

They look great arg...
I too have a problem getting my models below 2000. I'm a detail freak though.
I am having a brain fat as to adding textures. I seem to remember a tutorial out there somewhere... does anyone know where that is?
-
Yeah, I think I'm going for too much detail...

I'll replace the cylanders. My poly count is 2600-ish (after optimizing!)
Am I going too far with the rear sight, forward assist and the front sight post? I am striving for detail, but I think I'm going to have to give a lot up to save on poly's. Thoughts??
I guess the real art is in textures...
Thanks for the advice... Take a look at the 3rd pic - I have this invisible face and I don't know what to do.

I have added a front sight post and I should be texturizing it today...
Any thoughts?

Well, here's what I have so far. I HOPE to have it finished this weekend. I'm working a weird shift these days, so...
I can't post these to my site right now... Is there another way to add the pics to this forum? Sorry, I'm not too 'forum savvy'.
Next week I have a jump and a field ex from Tues - Fri, so I want to have this done by Monday.
I need to add:
Trigger
Front Sight Post
Forward Assist
Then I need to add textures.

Looks great, but... Take a look at this pic and you will see that the upper portion of the receiver and the feed tray cover are a little off in your model.
Hope this helps...

The 'classic' look of the m4 / 203 with a carrying handle is just what I was thinking. I will dive into rail systems and stuff like that later.
If my schedule works out, I should have SOMETHING to show this by this weekend...
OFF TOPIC
@Stalker - you're right about the comparisons of the different groups. There is kind of an unofficial 'hierarchy' of SOF. This hierarchy is based mainly on the mission sets and training. Rangers are at the bottom of the list (as they are the most conventional of the SOF guys) and Delta is at the top. In between is SF / SEALs / FR / Air Force Combat Controllers / etc. Different missions, but a lot of the same training. It's really hard to compare these guys when the mission sets (and the training for those missions) is so different. Argyll is also right - there are no junior guys in the CAG / DEVGRU / SF / DELTA arena. The last thing we (the Nation) need out there is some kid whose whole life experience has been high school.
Delta is a unique animal all it's own. If anyone's interested - get Eric Haney's book INSIDE DELTA FORCE: The Story of America's Elite Counter Terrorist Unit. It's great and a real eye opener.
@Marcinko - keep that positive mental attitude... you're gonna need it!
BACK ON TOPIC
What is the current popular technique for creating these masterpieces? Last year I would trace a picture of the weapon, exude it and modify as needed... Is this how you all still do it? I was thinking that it might be better to create each element (upper receiver, lower receiver, etc) individually. Thoughts?
Thanks for all the input so far...

I knew my little comment would spark some discussion...
I am an active duty Marine (Gunnery Sergeant) and I am stationed at HQ, US Special Operations Command at MacDill AFB, FL. There are about 30 Marines here at the HQ, and quite a few others spread out throughout the SOCOM world.
At this time there are NO Marine forces attached to SOCOM (in a truly operational capasity - all of us are technically here in an advisory capasity). There is a group being put together that should stand up this year. They will be working with the SEALs in the beginning. I am on a team that is working that issue.
The Marine Corps version of SF is indeed Force Recon. FR's mission is deep recon (beyond the hinterland), direct action (DA), Special recon and the like. The main difference between FR and battalion-level recon is that FR works for a higher-level commander and will take on National-level missions.
Marine Expeditionary Units aren't part of SOCOM either. The MEU is a conventional force that normally arrives on the scene just before or with the SOF guys. A MEU is designated "SOC" (Special Operations Capable) when it complete a training cycle pertaining to approx. 26 Special Ops-type missions (i.e. TRAP, DA, GOPLAT, MIO, MOUT, etc).
Well... enough of that.
I'll keep you posted on the mods...

Good deal!!! I'll drop you a line (probably tomorrow) letting you know what I'm going to do. This is great... All I ask is that you are a little patient while I get back into 3ds Max 4.2...

Greetings everyone... this is Godfather checking in. It's been about a year since I've been active in modding weapons and skins for GR, but I'm back in country and I'd like to get back into it.
Does anyone have anything that I could mod? Something to get back into the swing of things with? What are the new trends? I've looked through the forums and it looks like there is a real focus on DETAIL. I mean - wow, some of the new modders out there are taking the detail to new levels!
Hope to hear from everyone...

Hey everyone... I'm still alive. I am trying to export a few things to a qob file but...
After I type in the name and hit OK, I get the following dialog boxes:
Couldn't find the surface property list file
Couldn't find the soundlist file
Couldn't find the debrislist file
Then when I export it.. it says that all the faces have been redused to 0.
Any idea what the hell is going on?
