  1. I wonder if you laze the distance on the map or you actually set the distance in the gun range. For example, if a group of enemy are behind a hill 100 metres distant, you laze the top of the hill at 100 metres, but you might want to set the distance at 105 metres to have it detonate on the other side of the rise, over the enemy.

  2. I don't like the look of any game based on the Unreal engine, including RVS, AA or DE 2. I have yet to see one good game that runs on that engine and I don't think the PS2 graphics are as good as the X Box. GR made the correct choice to stay off the Unreal game engine and enhance their original.

I don't think GR suffered too many modding shortcomings when I look at the mod products. Then compare that with RVS or Far Cry. It does remain to be seen what ships with the game CD and what support is provided for mapping and modding tools, but, I will be surprised if the Igor 2 is not an enhanced editor.

  3. Is the Israeli missile fire and forget, and is it man portable?

And, on another subject, since your in the forces, if the Liberal government could get over its anti military bias and give the military its needed infusion of money, what would be the priorities - recruitment, wages and benefits, equipment, vehicles, transport?

Or do you have to start with the larger question of what kind of force you want and how you want to project that force.

I think the force has been stretched thin by the govt undertaking too many commitments without proper support. Forget Chretien and Martin, Canadians appreciate the greta work by the forces in the gulf, balkans,Haiti, Africa and every where else.

  4. I thought the Javelin was used by the Canadian army as a close air defence weapon, such as on the ships in the gulf, and that it was going to be phased out in favor of the Stinger or some Brit missile.

For man portable anti armor, do the Canadians use the M172 or Carl Gustav or both. Are the TOW and ERYX strictly vehicle mounted weapons.

  5. If you are peeking around a corner in such a way that you are sharply angled to present very little profile, I don't see that as cheating. Cheating is taking advantage of an error in the geometry so that you are protected by the geometry of the building or terrain so that it protects you yet you can still see beyond it. I would think you have to be hugging the building as much as you would be hugging the edge of a crater or edge of an incline.

Do you see that as the difference or not?

  6. I have seen a number of disturbing trends lately.

First, there is almost no news coverage in Iraq, no stories from Mosul, Tikrit, Najaf, Samarra, the news reports are narrative reports, with reports from the Grren Zone. It suggests that the country is too dangerous for the journalists to cover.

Second, in an interview with the Canadian reporter who was released by the insurgents, he said that they were stopped at a police checkpoint and turned over to Turkmen insurgents, who he thought were special forces. They then rode in a convoy through several police checkpoints to a city in northern Iraq. He said at one point there was a meeting between the Turkmen, an Al Queda group and some Sunni insurgents, and it appeared that there was some tentative cooperation among them. The fact that so many police and army have such sympathy for the insurgency is very alarming. Yesterday, it was reported that 40,000 members of the security force would have to be fired for either incompetency and/or ties to the insurgents. Today, it is reported that Samarra appears to be back in the hands of the insurgents.

In an interview with a new police recruit, asked why he joined up, he said he had no choice, there was no work and no jobs to make a living.

  7. Counter-insurgency is one of the most difficult military operations that can be conducted and successful examples are rare in recent history. The problems faced by a foreign military force against insurgents who are indigenous and can blend and move among the population are many and difficult. In urban areas, operations against insurgents can cause civilian casualties and further inflame the insurgency. Further, we have seen the rise of a new class of insurgents who are seemingly nihilistic and have no stake in civil order and believe in violence as an end in itself.

France had bad experiences in Algeria and Vietnam. The US counter insurgency against the Vietcong was very successful, although it eliminated nearly all non communist opposition groups and the outcome was not successful. The British effort in Malaya was successful, although it lasted 12 years, from 1948 to 1960.

In the post cold war era, the principles of successful counter insurgency have centered on things like general popular support, multilateralism, and specialization.

The danger in this type of conflict is staking your national credibility on the outcome of the conflict. That definitely is the case in Iraq and the course is going to be long and hard, in achieving a successful outcome.

  8. Just as a point, this attitude is not limited to Ubi. Illusion Softworks is about to release it's eagerly awaited expansion to Hidden & Dangerous 2 at the end of the month. To date, it has released 6 screenshots, no movies, no news, no previews.

There's a constant growling at the fan sites.

  9. I highly recommend this demo. It is very atmospheric and the graphics are great. The sounds are very chilling. And it's quite a good chunk of demo, unlike the MOH Pacific ( 500+ MB and about 10 minutes of gameplay).

It requires a lot of CPU, my sad P1.6 ran it quite well at 800x600.

I would not buy it, but it was fun to play once.

  10. A lot of people talk about RSE/Ubi not giving them the GR 2 they want. The problem is that there is no such game because no two PC players agree on the definition. That is the main problem - there are 100 different versions of what PC gamers expect. No game could satisfy that divergency of view.

I like everything I have seen to date regarding the X Box and if they simply incorporated the features revealed to date, I would be very satisfied. I am not one of the hard core sim players that want a lot of real military realism in the game. I think GR struck a correct balance between realism and fun, with the emphasis on fun. I think GR 2 will be a very tactical game that can be played methodically and carefully. I think you will have to be more cautious and careful or you will wear out your F7 key.

I am one of the optimists that am confident that RSE will deliver an even better game in GR 2. For me, it's a must buy. A lot can happen in 6 months.
