  1. Now you're talking - dungeon quests! Wizard keys! You still got to have elves, it's not an RPG without them.

Old Man: You must be that American soldier that is wandering aimlessly through the kingdom.

Soldier: You got a whorehouse in this ville.

Old Man: No time for that. Chuckles. I have a quest for you. Some Russian brutes have abscoded with several of our village virgins. I want you to rescue them, in return for this almost new FN P90.

    Soldier: Virgins?

Old Man: Yes, you have a moral choice, take the quest and ally with the village or side with the brutes.

Soldier: That P90 looks sick....wait a minute, is that an Axe of Extreme Decapitation?

Old Man: Check your experience credits, you don't have enough to use it.

Soldier: This game sucks! "Riddles the old man with his M16."

  2. That's my point, I don't see why a tac sim is incorporating RPG elements into this type of game, they don't fit. These games are very much reality based on real world combat, very mission driven with set objectives, the open ended part is the execution of completing mission objectives. I thought OFP and VBS was about squad leadership and team play, not meandering about the countryside doing quests.

The game sounds very disorganized and unfocused, who wants to engage in those interminable conversations with NPCs. This game is a disaster in the making, I will be surprised if they find a distributor for it. If they did this to GR, I would be finished with it. I thought they were going to incorporate the structure of VBS into the new game with better graphics, better missions, more realism. This sounds like a mess like Soldner.

  3. Lots of intriguing possibilities suggested:

    - the ability to communicate with each squad member may expand to the ability to control each member with a context sensitive order, place 1 man here, another there, etc, as long as there is a team order, ie entire team to regroup, move to, attack, suppress.

    - the cross com system expands the ability to order airstrikes from GR 2 to include recn by UAVs, airstrikes from gunships and possibly interaction with or control of MPCs and/or armor.

    - advanced leaning system

    - new tac map features, some pathfinding potential, who knows, ability to assign waypoints in coop would be good. Definitely a gridded map.

    - new AI features, an enhanced team AI would be much appreciated from earlier games.

    Lot of potential here.

  4. I hope they incorporate this into the pc game, I am against driveable vehicles, the maps are too small, but, I like the idea of controllable APCs or tanks, if limited to 1 or 2 missions. Also like the use of UAVs and airstrikes, I would prefer to see the gunships arrive on scene than an unseen aircraft deliver. If supported, these features would be very effective in mods.

  5. Is this feature going to be in the pc game? I like the idea of having access to friendly NPCs and armor, recon drones like UAVs and heavy support like heli gunships. I don't like the idea of driveable vehicles but, I like the idea of calling up the APC to move to a jump off point.

  6. Looking very good, needs more work on the lighting, but, very nice. Still in mexico as far as I know.

"We will unveil more details about the gameplay, including the advanced leaning system, tactical map and AI features in the coming weeks. "

Intrigued by the utilization of the tac map and enhancements to the AI. This is the only tac sim I am interested in, thereis nothing else out there.

  7. Classic Recon, R.I.P.

I will buy it, no question, what are the alternatives. I still haven't given up hope for classic Recon, at least some elements of it, at least the large open maps, open gameplay, improved squad control over GR 2 (I conceed that there will be 1 squad). Include some of the best of GR and GR 2. I am intrigued with what they are going to do with the tac map. It should prove to be the best tac sim on the market and the coop will be awesome. I want it to be big so that the mission packs come fast and furious.

  8. I agree, I see tremendous potential in the myriad of graphically rich games, with large open maps, nice landscapes, foliage, buildings, these are great settings for a great squad based tac sim combat game. Instead, they are wasted on frivolous arcade shooters that almost run on rails from A to B to C. Beautiful GR like environments wasted on one shot games.

There is very little on the horizon - GR 3 being the best hope. Lockdown might be alright although it is looking more arcade. Dogtag looks good although again it is 3rd person and intends to be more an action game, it does have squad orders and character switching. COD 2 is also a possibility if he non linear gameplay promised is incorporated. Still, none of these even match let alone surpass GR.

The fact is that there is no market for a niche game like GR for North American developers, because the market is console and action. I have no expectation to see a game as good as GR for a long time, if ever.

  9. It is disappointing that game developers have no interest in making realistic tactical squad based games, there is a far greater market for arcade action games or games that try to bridge the genres and fail, like Brothers In Arms and First To Fight. SWAT 4 is a good tac sim but it is a police procedural not a military combat game like GR. I am still waiting for a tac sim to match or surpass GR, so I continue to play GR and HD2.

Some people like OFP and VBS, look forward to BIS games and [OFP: DR], but, I detested OFP and am not impressed with that game. The only tac sim on the horizon so far is GR 3, but, I keep looking for a similar game.
