  1. You don't have enough heavy armor to button up everbody in theatre. Even if you did, you would get the same result, instead of an RPG, it would be a shaped charge or a mine. The Russians had the same experience in Afghanistan.

If you only have enough personnel to conduct roving patrols, the enemy simply has to study the routes and select the ambush point. The initiative is with the attacker and on his terms.

  2. Two comments:

    1. Hit and impact effect. Please do not put the hit effect from 360 in the pc version. I refer to that short circuit, static Halo type effect in the goggles from taking a hit. That is crap that belongs in an arcade game.

    2. The squad controls appear to be very rudimentary in the 360, make the squad control better and more precise than GR 2.

These impressions are gleamed from 360 screenshots, and only appear to be the case. If the SP component is already well along, it is too late for suggestions, but, I hope they leave arcade features to the console.

  3. 1. Will the pc version use an ingame server browser instead of UGS? Will it support direct IP and ASE,Firefox?

    2. What gametypes are available?

    3. How many players are supported in coop?

    4. Is there only FPV in MP? If there are other views, can the server force the view?

    5. Has MP been tested with voice comms like TS,Ventrilo? Is there an ingame voice comm?

    6. Is the gun camera from GR 2 in the game and is it in MP, and are there restrictions on its use?

    7. Is there any skin selection options in MP?

    8. What are the kick/ban options for MP?

    9. Can you join a game in progress?

    10. What kind of clan support is offered?

    11. Will the browser have a friends list?

    12. Will there be extra maps for MP, will maps be imported from GR or GR 2?

    13. Is there a medic feature in MP?

14.What other server options are there?

  4. If Armed Assault or [OFP: DR] are the alternative to GRAW, then, for me, there is no alternative. I am in the camp that hated OFP, I mean despised OFP. There was almost nothing about OFP that I liked. For those that like it, it is another alternative.

What I don't understand is why no other developer has brought out a tac sim like GR, even a small dev house, instead it's all action corridor games. I don't think I'll ever stop playing GR, last night I was replaying Band Of Brothers with Earls' Spetzgruppe Vympel.

Even if GRAW is not as tactical as GR, it will be head and shoullders above the competition, and the coop should be a lot of fun.

  5. For me, GRAW is the last best hope, there is nothing on the horizon or in development to match GR, nothing but arcade action twitch shooters like FEAR and Stalker. You'd think at least one company could make a decent squad based combat shooter. I would even go for a WW2 or a scifi shooter if it were squad based with real squad command and good gameplay. But, pc gaming is following the console model of single character games with little or no squad control, built almost completely around graphics, physics and gimmicks, instead of rich, thoughtful gameplay. Unless things turn around, GRAW could be the last game I buy.

  6. I think Parliament has recognized that some things have gone unchecked for too long and there has been abuse of the rich privilege of free speech and tolerance of political views, the newly proposed legislation will go a long way to deal with this kind of political extremism. No country can afford to ignore this kind of activity.

  7. Very interesting. What are the distinct roles or tasks taken by these 3 services - SEALS, Delta and 5th SOG? There is very little written about the activities of special forces in Iraq, presumably for reasons of security. What kind of missions do Delta undertake, are they more stringent or made to be cognizant of operational security, even with regular army. Also, is this a fair or unfair generalization about the SEALS?

To an observer, the counter insurgency and development of Iraqi forces seems to be a disaster. Very few seem combat capable or have the will to fight the insurgents on their own, and little progress appears to be taking place. Does the special forces community have a different view on this? To me it looks a lot like Vietnamization and its subsequent failure. There must be a reason how a minority population group like the Sunni could keep the entire country under its thumb for so many years.

  8. GR coop is the best, but, SWAT 4 coop is very good if you have the right players. That goes for any game, but, get a group of people ready to play like a SWAT team and it is a lot of fun. I have been in games where everyone follows orders and breaches rooms like a team. It is something to see 4 guys stack at a door while 2 others watch other avenues of approach.

  9. Canada is sending another contingent, starting with 250 soldiers, to form a Provincial Reconstruction Team, to provide security and start reconstruction projects in Khandahar, supplemented by an unknown number of operators from JTF-2. The public has been thoroughly warned of the danger of this mission and expectation of casualties. Things are going to get hot there for the elections.

  10. No, I do not like 3rd person games, they invariably are arcade and simplistic in nature. And I did not like Splinter Cell, I did not like the 3rd person or the linear gameplay. Nor do I think this game looks very tactical nor do I like bullet effects, unless you can entirely disable them. A tactical sniper game like this should have a FPV or FPWV. The demo will tell if this game is worth buying not that I believe it will be. There is an absence of any good first person tactical combat games due to the popularity of simplistic, action games which feature linear gameplay and little replayability.

  11. I agree with Harntrox about the unique structure of GR, which what lent itself to the open gameplay and control of the map, but, it is obvious that character switching is a feature that is passe in today's games, even OFP did not have it, and GRAW will not either. While you lose that ability to go to different areas on the map and control the squad directly, if the squad control is precise and robust, then the game will retain a tactical feel to it. Much will also depend on the AI, the map and mission design as well.

Thing is, you have to make the best with what you have, not what you would like to have. Expectations will have to be moderated, compromises will have to be accepted.

The tac sim market seems to be narrowing down to 2 choices - GRAW or Armed Assault/[OFP: DR]. Every other offering at this point look like arcade shooters. For people like me, who hated OFP, GRAW is my last best hope for a game to match GR. GR will nver be replaced, it will always be a one of a kind for me. My suggestion to Grin would be, when in doubt, look at the original.

  12. The only RPG I want in a tac sim is the kind they are ducking in Iraq.

Seriously, though, this should be great, I wonder if you will be able to customize your chaincloth, make a cammo loincloth. If they are going to be realistic, you have to start out with just a staff or a small knife, then you can move up to a cross bow with a Cmag. And those cool Elven boots, too.
