First of all, thanks for the link. I've been browsing the site for a couple of hours and I'm surprised I missed that download. On to my question.
Right off the bat in the tutorial it explains the plugins included on the CD work for versions 3 and 4 of 3DSM. I've been told that you can use 3DSM 5 but not higher to mod GR1, and that is the version I have. I will experiment while I am waiting for a reply, but do the RSE plugins work with Max 5?

I have 3DSM 5 and Photoshop for starters, so I have the basic programs I need to make maps. What I don't have is a place to get started. I've browsed the net for tutorials and I'm turning up a bunch of broken links. I understand that a lot goes into map making for GR, but I'm confident I can do it once I get a place to start. I've been successfully modding C&C RA2 for years now and had the same problem at first, where to start. Fortunately the C&C modding community is extremely strong and I've been able to find what I needed. I've modeled my own voxels and SHP's etc to make plenty of working mods for those games. Long story short, if I have to drive to do something, I can get it done.
What I'm looking for is the most basic of information to get me started. Are there any working tutorials out there that detail things such as modeling a basic one story building, modeling a trench, modeling a crater etc? 3DSM is such a new program to me with extensive options, I'm just confused on the very basics. Just a tutorial explaining the step by step process to create a map with a basic building and getting it in game would be fantastic.
More specifically I plan on making maps of WW2 battles to go with the WOI mods. I plan on starting with the Brecourt Manor Assault on D-Day. I have a detailed drawing of the map on paper based off of actual maps I've dug up on the net, along with the portrayal of the battle seen in Band Of Brothers. In other words, I know exactly what I want, and it should be simple to create once I know what I'm doing with 3DSM. More or less the only things that go into it are trenches, trees and sandbag MG nests. Can someone get me started on the modeling, texturing, and getting everything in game?

Well, I tried my hand at 3D modeling and I'm having mixed results. With only 10 hours under my belt, I don't expect to be an expert. I'm looking to make a mod for my own personal use. Does anyone have an AK-74 model I can use in 3D max that they would let me experiment with? With just one model I can make countless variants. I'll make a small list of AK variants I plan on doing.
AK-74
AKS-74
AK-101
AK-102
AK-103
AK-104
AK-105
Those are just the base rifles. I also plan on making different cosmetic variants such as bakelite furniture, black polymer furniture, plum polymer furniture, different magazines and drums, scopes, suppressors, bipods and countless other accessories. I just need a good solid AK-74 model to work with. I hope to learn from it first off, and be able to create my own base model that looks good. I must state again, in no way will I use your hard work to release a public mod and pawn it off as my own. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a BEGINNERS modeling tutorial? I'm a fast learner, I just need somewhere to start. I plan on making some AK models at first, because I have six AK's and I know them inside and out. I figure it will be easy to start with something I am familiar with. Any tutorials or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Obviously I'm a new member to the forum, but I've been visiting it since I bought GR in 2003. I never had the need to join because any modding questions I had were already answered by the experienced modders on the forum. I've probably made about 50 or so missions over the years for my own personal use and for a close circle of friends. I'm not what you'd call a newbie, at least not to mission scripting. Over the years I've used original GR maps, expansion maps and fan maps for my missions. I'm starting to run into the problem of repetition. I've used all the maps time and time again, and am running out of material for new missions. I have plenty of my own ideas for maps, but never obtained the 3D software sadly. Now I've gone on a desperate search to obtain this 3D software. Anyhow, here are my questions.
Firstly, does anyone want to sell me their copy of Max 4 or 5? I will pay a fair price for it.
Second, I've finally found the 3D Max guide 'for dummies' that comes with the demo CD. Can I use this demo CD to create maps? Also, if I get this CD, how long to I have before it expires?
In a broader perspective, what exactly do I need to make my own GR maps for as long as I want? Will the demo fit this purpose, or must I continue an impossible search for a licensed copy?
I'm a quick learner in general, any 3D Max suggestions you guys have would be great, thanks in advance.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions, but I'll try to work out any issues I have by myself before posting. For example the layouts in 3DSM 5 are a little different from whatever version Mike was basing his tutorial off of, but so far I've managed to navigate through the program and find everything I need thus far. I'll give his tutorial a shot and see what I come up with. If I need anything, I'll post.
