  1. I love that 'Tommy' gun. I feel a good 'ol fashioned 30's style mob shootout coming on...
  2. Another useful way to paint the camo is with the "airbrush" tool instead of the "pen". Make sure you have the type set to 'normal' rather than dissolve. This is a good way to slowly build up the colors, which keeps the different camo colors from over-saturating the image. When you paint the camo, make sure to do the painting on a separate layer. This way, you can adjust the transparancy of the camo layer. If it looks saturated at 100%, then drop the trans down to 75%, etc. Play with it until you get your desired result.

Since you collapsed the model and saved it, 3DS reads it as a single mesh now and all the modifiers are no longer in memory. You can't un-collapse it now, so you will have to get fancy and disassemble the mesh manually with 'edit mesh'.
  4. Wow, that did turn out pretty good. Are you going to make the one with the Tiger Stripe camo too? Or just the desert?
  5. For the more simple models, like guns and tanks (those with few round edges), 3DS MAX 5.1 works fine. More complex models are built in Alias|Wavefront's Maya. While 3DS does have the ability to model these shapes through NURBS and patch grids, it's just easier to do IMO in Maya. ---------------------------- Getting back on subject; Swartzs, when do you expect to have the mod finished. After looking at all your expertly crafted guns, I'm anxious to take an hour or two away from work and play a game of GR with those weapons.
  6. I don't have a lot of details to give at the moment, but the sim will encompass all aspects of the modern battlefield. Ground, air and sea combat. Think something like Battlefield 1942 or WWII online, but with better and much more accurate physics models (3 of my closest friends who just happen to be aerospace engineers will be helping out with that). Unlike the aforementioned games, this one will take place in modern times rather than the second world war. So far, implementation has started for both ground and air units; with sea coming later on. I'm quite excited about this project, b
  7. Everything is looking great Swartsz. Got any pics of the MP5 with the camo I made? I still haven't seen how it turned out, and therefore if it needs a little more work. In about 3 weeks, I am beginning work on a new military simulation game. Considering the scope of the game, I don't expect to be finished with it until sometime late 2004 or early 2005. Needless to say, I won't be working on anything GR related for quite some time.
  8. 3D Studio does have import plug-ins for .obj files. Faces are made up of polygons, so yes to your second question. Most likely, the model will need to be worked on a little once it is imported into 3DS; as the .obj file, while similar, does not carry the same information as a .max or .3ds file would.
  9. It's looking good. I still think the camo is a bit overpowering, and washes out some of the detail of the gun. If only the game could render it as nice as 3D Studio. Hopefully the MP-5 will look a little cleaner. I think I might go play around in Photoshop some more with the M-4, and see if I can bring out the details in the gun.
  10. Too bad the GR engine doesn't support NURBS...
  11. If you can't find your new gun, but you saved the data, it probably is saved in the 'origmiss' folder. I'd check there first.
  12. I can paint you a camo map if you want.
  13. The camo is looking good, but it's too bright to be effective. You should go back and edit your texture in Photoshop, and turn down the brightness. The easiest way to do that is to go under image:adjust ---> hue/saturation and turn down the brightness. The coloring looks pretty good, but you can tweek it a bit by using the hue slider. It's looking good so far though.
  14. Well, it's good to know that all that college tuition money did go to some good use. I should be getting a new version of 3DS MAX within the next 2 weeks, so after that I can set up this model for export to GR As for it's use in the game, it will definately be a stationary gun; and I am trying to make it work as a kit weapon. Keep in mind though, that the gun with cradle and tripod weights about 140lbs., so if it is a kit weapon the ammo will be in relatively short supply. I've read about the Mk 19 having decent mobility, BUT in real life there is a crew of 2 or 3 guys working the gun.
  15. You could always make 2 guns...one with camo, and one without.
  16. Thanks to everyone who sent me pics, I really appreciate it. I did some reworking of the 'gun' and came up with this: What do you think?
  17. Godfather, that pic will help me out a LOT doing this model. The only pics I could ever find were small and grainy, and almost all were side views. Using that pic you just posted, I can fix a lot of the irregularities, etc. Thanks. If you or anyone else has any pics of the Mk19 that I could use, please email them to me at AZsFastestZ24@aol.com Thanks for the help guys!
  18. I ran into this problem when I did a quickie mod with all the guns from GR and SOAF. I kept getting crashes too, until something caught my eye... I don't use IGOR for setting up .gun and kit files, so I can see everything withing the file. I noticed that if the line linking to the qob file was not exactly as the file was saved, it crashed. e.i. CAPITOLS count. If say, you are using the model m16.qob and you accidentily type in M16.QOB, it will crash. I hope thats the only problem you are having, as it is easy to fix. Good luck.
  19. Well, I'm just about done with the AGL. I couldn't find any pictures good enough to use for making a bitmap, so I resorted to painting my own. It doesn't look too bad, but it's still not the same as a real pic. Let me know what you think of it so far. Any tips on improvement, etc. This was a bit of a challenge for two reasons, 1: this was my first weapon model in 3DS MAX, and 2: outside of a few bad photos, I've never seen a Mk19 before in my life. Yes, I know...the ammo box is missing. I didn't add it in to this set of pics because I wanted more of the gun model to show for critici
  20. I'm getting closer to having this model done. All thats left is to fine tune a few things and then model the tripod. After that is a few hours in photoshop to make the textures and I'm done...yay! Here's a pic of the updated model:
  21. I just realized that I'm using 3D Studio MAX R2...I mean, it's so old that it's still from when Discreet was known as Kinetix. I'm about 99% sure that the GR plug-ins wont work with this version. Does anyone know some good places to get a newer copy (R4 or newer) without having to refinance the house to afford it? lol I'm really anxious to get my Mk.19 into the game, but obviously can't do that yet. Either reply here, or send me an email at AZsFastestZ24@aol.com Thanks for your help!
  22. I just finished doing the link of M430A1s as well as their textures. Heres a pic: AND... I changed the default background rendering color; it's NOT black anymore
  23. "Force Recon" if I remember correctly.
