You say that people are entitled to sharing their opinion yet, in the same post, you say it's ok to silence the other side "through proper channels?" I don't get your logic, but oh well..
Selling a game isn't voicing your opinion.
Free speech =/= freedom to sell all products, to everyone. Democracy = majority decides what they want. If a huge amount of people were to say it's wrong to provide this product to kids (by voicing their opinion) than the side saying it's okay (by voicing their opinion -- see how this works?) would be out voted.
I don't see that happening, anyway, so i don't get the point in making a big deal out of it.

What happened to COD 5 ?
Treyarch is developing 5. Infinity ward, presumably, is developing 6.
There's absolutely no reason that they can't be in development concurrently -- in fact it'd be bizarre if they weren't.
-
Whining about it is fine. But they want to go farther than whine. They want to silence the other side.
Through public support -- which is exactly how it's supposed to work work. If the majority were to agree with them and say the game shouldn't be marketed to minors, they'd have the right to insist (through proper channels.)
And considering how ridiculous their stance is, i don't see that happening.
If they were trying to silence them through more subversive means, i'd agree that it was something wrong, but;
1. Support for our campaign against America's Army 2. Sign our letter and endorse this campaign. 3. Participate in our upcoming event on Hiroshima Day (Wed., Aug. 6), at noon, in South Park (btw 2nd/3rd, Bryant/Brannan), asking these companies to either withdraw from their Army contracts or provide a warning label: “This game is designed to recruit children in violation of international law. Military service can be hazardous to your health.â€Silly, but fair and harmless. And as for the article, which says some more radical stuff -- if the military thinks there's something honestly wrong with it, or it will do any real harm, they can try and pursue them for libel. I don't see that happening. Right now it's just both sides yelling their own nonsense about it, which i can't find anything wrong with.
migryder: Different people have different values. Some crazies think serving in the military is immoral -- an opinion they're entitled to, and entitled to share, even if it is utter nonsense.
-
I don't follow.
One side wants to impose their views on the other.
Whether it's 'Army is good, kids!'
Or 'Stop recruiting children!'
Each side has an agenda. I personally think the army's view is better, but it's silly to say one nutcase imposing their views on everyone else is any more pathetic than another nutcase imposing their views on everyone else.
How about we just let the army put out their game, and let these people whine about it? Let everyone talk? Make speech, y'know. Free.
It sorts itself out.

Seriously? This thread is a complete joke, if i wasn't so accustomed to this i'd be amazed you guys are reading it with such a sense of drama.
i just can't put on my serious face when somebody is yelling about 'ethnic sounding made up african names'. Statements that, if you're right, and i'm accusing WK without justification, any normal person would see the error in and apologize for. And if i'm right, and he's as racist as he sounds, why not make a joke of the whole proceedings?
Anyone under the age of 30 would have a laugh if they were called a troglodyte. I doubt he even knows what it means! Does anybody, really? I haven't been attacked or argued against in more ridiculous ways in quite some time, and i frequently talk with teenagers. I'm having a wonderful time. I know i'm being childish, but i don't think in 5 years 'huh, i guess i was being pretty childish...' is going to come as a shock.
Anyway, if you guys can't step back and laugh at this i feel pretty sorry for you. It's the internet -- real people, sure, but anonymity inspiring inconceivable levels of silliness and self-entitlement.

WK is saying he has black friends, so it justifies his racism.
It's pretty much the oldest and most stereotypical defense imaginable, it's almost hard to believe he isn't joking.
If you weren't just like him in your backwards social views, parabellum, i'm sure your disdain for me would hit home a bit harder.
As is, i'm pretty chill with being unpopular around the under-educated, angry, middle aged white men demographic.
You can't win 'em all.

(Props on using the word troglodyte, though; i'm a big fan of archaic forms of namecalling to end disputes! It's an artful and efficient way to convey both self-obsession *and* immaturity!)

Your blindness and attempted justification of your rather apparent distaste is, as i'm i suppose getting somewhat attached to the word, ridiculous.
Regardless, you've made enough of a fool of yourself and considering you won't listen to me or reason so much as to apologize or withdraw your remarks, i'll just leave you with an equal bit of silliness.
Irish Americans (Irish: Gael-Mheiriceánach) are citizens of the United States who can claim ancestry originating in the north west European island of Ireland.0000000001 would be accurate, i think, walter, according to estimated figures. I may have gotten it wrong, though. D:

Well, we warn for depictions of violence -- sexual content, alcohol consumption...
Hitting people, fornicating, and drinking are all things people commonly do, but parents still appreciate the heads needed to shelter their children from all three in the media. Is tobacco consumption a bit silly to warn about? Probably, but i know parents who wouldn't want their kids exposed to any media 'glorifying' bad habits -- even upwards of teenager children.

Politicians being clueless about games isn't exactly news. The real issue is their very casual approach to something so fundamental as freedom of speech. Which, of course is a highly political subject, so I won't go into that.
http://www.aph.gov.au/LIBRARY/Pubs/RN/2001-02/02rn42.htm
The Constitution consists mainly of provisions relating to the structure of the Commonwealth Parliament, executive government and the federal judicial system.(6) There is no list of personal rights or freedoms which may be enforced in the courts. There are however some provisions relating to personal rights such as the right to trial by jury (section 80), and the right to freedom of religion (section 116). Since 1992 decisions of the High Court have indicated that there are implied rights to free speech and communication on matters concerning politics and government, e.g. permitting political advertising during election campaigns.(7) This is known as the 'implied freedom of political communication'. Issues arising from these decisions include defining when communication is 'political' and when the freedom should prevail over competing public interests.(8)Doesn't seem to have anything regarding free speech in entertainment -- as such, the lawmakers are probably doing the best they can to uphold their law. Misinformed, sure, but not willfully harmful.

I am referring to the made up African-American names like Lawanda, Laquisha and the ilk. I have known real Africans and none sports such names. Companies have not hired people due to such names and if they were hired, often overlooked the employees for raises or promotions. I could really care less what someone names their kids really except that parents should use common sense. Here is an example of an African name: CORNELIUS OYEMADE.
Now I do have problems with people calling themselves hyphen American if they were actually born in this country. Those that have immigrated to this country and have become naturalized citizens rate such a title, but not someone born in Montgomery Alabama.
Again, ridiculously racist. As Zjj was kind enough to look up already, Laquisha is of Egyptian descent. Just because a name's origin is unknown to you doesn't mean it's a 'made up african-american name'.
'John' is Hebrew, does that constitute a 'made up jew name'?

As for hyphens to denote your descent, I don't understand your issue with it.
African Americans or Black Americans are citizens or residents of the United States who have origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.[5] In the United States, the term is generally used for Americans with at least partial Sub-Saharan African ancestry. An Italian American is an American of Italian descent and/or dual citizenship.Chinese Americans are Americans of Chinese descent.Your bizarre, xenophobic, 'everybody had better be *just like me*' attitude doesn't achieve anything but to make you look like an idiot.

People of African descent have been naming their kids with more ethnic sounding names and employers have passed them over for hiring or even promotions if hired.
This is ridiculously racist. 'more ethnic sounding names'? What ethnicity? Under-educated and white isn't the default state for humans, wk, just because you happen to be; Look up your own first name. It's just as 'ethnic' as anyone else's, it originated with some language and nationality.
My parents named me joseph. Relevant to my descent and heritage. People recognize it from the bible and point that out (annoying, but what can you do?) but otherwise it's considered normal.
Why the hell can't you, if you're of African descent, have a name which respects your heritage? Naming your kid 'tuala does the hula' is ridiculous -- naming your kid an *actual name*, maybe named after their grandparents or great grandparents, isn't exactly the same, even if it's a name you don't hear often where you're from.

Get ahold of the graphic novel. A *lot* of people haven't ever read it, but it's a phenomenal piece of fiction.
To date, Watchmen remains the only graphic novel to win a Hugo Award,[2] and is also the only graphic novel to appear on Time Magazine's 2005 list of "the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present."[3]It's not really a high action or traditional superhero story, check it out.

Kind of makes me wonder if DX10 and 10.1 are going to be ignored until 11 is out, even if it is a year or so down the line.
We're still seeing DX9 improvements now -- still saw 8 improvements for quite some time after 9 came out. And 7, for a while after 8...
this happens every few years, relax.

ArmA = quality... What? You are kidden us, aren't you? If there is one truth then that: Arma is n o t quality.
ArmA AI goes through walls, for ArmA-AI the gras does not exist, ArmA-AI looks through smoke from smoke-grenades, the audiblities of running persons (foot-steps, etc) are imbalanced (you can hear footsteps of running persons in the wood not before the person is 10 - 15 meters near you = absolutly unrealistic).
I can go on and go on with this list but this is not the place to speak about ArmA.
For me ArmA is one of the most bugged and glitchy game and so beyond doubt i will not give money for ArmA-2.
Apropos ArmA-slowness: thats one of the better ArmA-things because its realistic.
For me its simple like that: if a shooter is childish like COD4,Crysis, rainbow-6 vegas or other #### like that, i will not spend my money for this.
Get a team to program good pathfinding and sensory AI for an open world like arma on BIS's budget. Come on, man -- it's easy! :DDD
Anyway, all of the problems you described have since been fixed, anyway. BIS does exactly what you've all been clamouring for from ubi -- supports their game. It's been patched a hundred ###### times. More importantly, i can play a two hour co-op mission with 65 people; i'll deal with a few minor glitches.
wildbill: No idea, but people seem to like it. Honestly, my assumption is that it was out of respect for the franchise. Ubisoft saw the Ghost Recon name being tactical, modern, military, and an exciting franchise. So they adjusted some (okay, a lot) of the gameplay, to create a game a wider audience would enjoy with the same themes. Say what you will about whether it was a good choice or not (i think it's an excellent game, but would rather it have not be named GR) but it sold incredibly, so unless you completely distort facts and refuse to accept reality, for ubisoft's purposes it was clearly a good move. It's probably here to stay, for better or for worse. (on the one hand, it popularizes tactical gameplay and themes, raising the likelyhood we'll get a big budget 'real' tactical shooter. On the other, it dilutes the general diversity of games on the market...)
Last final note, something I said already -- Action games aren't 'kiddy'. They sell just as well to the older crowd as they do youth. They're not even simpler, tbh, but that's another argument. Anyway, not everything you personally dislike is enjoyed only by children and autism sufferers. Some people just -- this'll blow your mind -- enjoy different things than you.
I swear, guys, this rage against the presumed 'young' crowd is ridiculous. You're going to wake up one morning and realize you're chasing 45 yearolds off your lawn.

/me predicts HALO fans in uproar over not being able to play as Masterchief or no Masterchief at all. I also predict an uproar over not being able to jump or run and gun.
You'd be wrong.

So far the general response is excitement. If this game turns out to be real and is released as 'halo 4' i'm sure some more devoted fans would be a bit upset their franchise was turned on their head (something you can relate to, i'm sure) but as a spinoff *most* gamers would be more than happy to play a different kind of game.
It's actually pretty rare for a fan of videogames to only like *one* genre of games, and refuse to accept any others.
-
I don't think the age distinction is true. I don't have the figures on hand, but i'm just about positive the average age of gamers has been climbing yearly for quite some time. It's an inaccurate stereotype. Action games aren't 'kiddy' or 'dumbed down' -- they're just different, and appeal to different people. The same goes for 'consolized' It's true that consople games have more streamlined menus and simpler interfaces, in general, but that has nothing to do with the style of gameplay. Up until halo, in fact, consoles were not in general considered a viable platform for action shooters -- Soldier of Fortune, Call of Duty, Doom, Quake, Half life -- the action game is a PC staple as much as it is a console standard.
That said, at the moment, the high cost of game development coupled with the fast pace of the market has left quite a big hole in the realistic tactical shooter niche, and i definitely agree with just about everyone here that we could use more.
There is however something of light at the end of the tunel, a lot of promising games have been announced.
I would suggest looking into Armed Assault, personally -- it's slow and clunky, but quality and incredibly deep. My personal favorite tactical shooter out right now.
Short of that, consider following Codemasters '[Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising]', Blackfoot studios 'Ground Branch', or Zombe studios and Bethesda's 'Rogue Warrior '; any one of the three could turn out to be the game you're looking for, on release.
I would not expect anything resembling the [Ghost Recon] or Rainbow Six from Ubisoft. They have very talented teams making very high quality games, but it's in a more 'arcade' mold, which has so far turned tremendous profit and worked very well for them. They probably will not turn back to more realistic gameplay any time soon.
If it's not *realism*, strictly, that you're looking for -- merely an appreciation of tactics -- Consider games like Ubisoft's Brothers in Arms, and other more 'cinematic' tactical shooters. They still have a focus on fire and maneuver tactics and thorough planning, but with a more 'action blockbuster' stylization.
-
The notion that a 'action blockbuster' game is easier or cheaper to make than a tactical shooter is absolutely ridiculous. In fact, the art and 'special effects' side of game production requires a much bigger staff and a lot more time and money than the planning and conceptual side of things.
Developers aren't being cheap, they're developing, at some cost, what the *majority* of the market, and the *average* gamer wants. I'm sure they'd love to please anyone, but two thousand disenfranchised fans isn't even a dent in their sales. And unless you're a five man indie team, there's no way to justify the expense of time and money to appeal to such a small market.
-
This is a silly and ridiculous thread. Post effects are used in every modern engine, you could get what you're describing out of just about anything on the market, or standard libraries if you're programming yourself.
GRAW PC, GRAW (360/ps3) singleplayer, and GRAW (360/ps3) multiplayer were running three different engines, too.
-
I dunno. "Like OFP only less clunky" is almost a Holy Grail of realism shooters to me. But I have a bad feeling about this one.
Respectfully
krise madsen
Not to mention with a completely unproven team. Even when they have the right idea, it's probably been a struggle to get new ideas implemented.
A delay is no surprise. Still *very* cautiously optimistic about this one, but as an arma player i'd rather just wait for BIS's new game.
-
is it written on the packaging?.
No, and with any gen the failure rate is still decently high.
360's have quite a solid warrwanty from microsoft -- but you should prepare yourself for dealing with that hassle if you choose to buy one. It's an excellent gaming console, but not that great of a piece of electronics.
-
*new* classics, Krise. r6 and Xcom are on just about everyone's 'classics' lists. GR, as much as i love it, was more of an iteration of existing concepts than a revolutionary title, so i'm not sure if it qualifies as a classic...
Then again, they have Oblivion and Perfect dark on there, so GR probably deserves a slot. Not the best list overall, but they hit on some pretty important games.
Wipeout, SH2... Both good picks.
Psychonauts? Not a classic at all, the game hardly sold, although *incredible* and deserving of the attention.
I actually think it's good to see Call of Duty 4 up there, too. Say what you will about linear, repetitive gameplay, the game did some incredible and groundbreaking things with immersive storytelling.
Overall though yeah, rubbish list.

Much better information about why this problem came about has been around for ages -- that yahoo article is kindof garbage, honestly.
If you're interested in learning more:
The most common problem has to do with the construction of the motherboard -- with stress and heat it has a tendancy to crack, which, naturally, isn't so good for the operation of the console.

In the classics like Street Fighter, [the player] would occasionally fight as and against some Japanese people - Chun Li, E Honda etc
... Most of the characters in SF were japanese -- chun li was not.

I agree, and if this were ever to gain enough momentum that it actually went to court or something, I'm pretty sure that would be the ruling.
My point is that the group of idiots has the right to try, that's how this system works, and it's nothing to get worked up over.
(And if we want to split hairs, representative republic 'democracy' is the buzzword everyone campaigns over, it's easier to use in casual conversation.)
Also, it's good to see you posting again, PZ. How've things gone so far?
