The nominees for the Shortbus Award, in the category of "Most Incompetent Developer and/or Publisher" are:
Ubisoft, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
Electronic Arts: Spore
Sony Online Entertainment: The Shadow Odyssey
Epic: Gears of War (PC)
And Shortbus Award goes to ... drumroll ... EPIC!
Microsoft, not epic, this is a Games for Windows Live! issue.
I have yet to have any of my "Games for Windows" games cease to function. Ergo, the problem is not with Microsoft. The problem is with Epic.
Well, it's kindof both. It's epic's mistake, but the reason the whole system is broken is that GWFL is a cumbersome, ridiculous platform and it adds a lot of unnecessary complexity and undesirable redundancy.

how long they have been involved in the series and what was their first experience with the game.
i shudder to think.....
"my first experience of Ghost Recon was GRAW..."

I know some guys, actually. They're really proud that their art was in a game that sold great, achieved critical acclaim, and entertained a whole lot of people -- who continued to play it online for years.
Really worth shuddering over how the hard work of those developers was wasted on a game just as successful as the original GR.

It's really an issue with no perfect solution. At least not until we all get a NASA supercomputer just to run the AI.
That's not really true, it's just a corner that gets cut in tactical shooters unsettlingly often.
I'm not sure how much you keep up on modern shooters (i'm one of the few here who enjoys action games as much as tactical shooters), but hell, even Halo had friendly AI that could advance competently. FEAR, Call of Duty (aside from its scripted stuff, most of the cover to cover combat AI was dynamic), Half life, Resistance, GRAW on the consoles, RB6v, Brothers in arms, Gears of War, GTA4 -- MOST games are getting the AI fighting around cover thing right, whether their style is cinematic gun battles or realistic infantry tactics. Graw PC was an embarrassment, especially considering how small and (conceptually) simple their environemtns were. At least Armed Assault has an excuse, the way their engine looks at terrain is bizarre and it's hard to put specific cover logic into it.
-
As much as we'd all love to see a retrospective, Ubi PR is usually really tight about stuff like that, i doubt it.
-
Quite simply, GRAW1/2 had pretty rudimentary AI, for both sides. They did the best with the complexity of AI they'd made, and i'm sure they programmed the best AI they could with the difficulties of their engine and the time constraints... But it sucked. It wasn't versatile, and it couldnt accomplish basic tasks like walking up stares or shooting from cover correctly.
Don't be afraid to criticise, things go wrong in game development, it's not like you're insulting Bo's mother

GR1's AI was much better, frankly, and i criticize it constantly around here. I would love to see a solid squad based AI system for the opponents, with that touch of individuality and illusion of fear to let the player feel like they were really accomplishing something with stealth and flanking attacks.

RSE is a talented development shooter and is going to make a good game, but they make good action games (AA consoles, GRAW1/2 mp consoles) as well as they make good slow paced tactical shooters.
They're gonna make an awesome game, rest assured, but whether it's EXACTLY WHAT YOU GUYS WANT is obviously going to be up in the air. They have to find a way to appeal to the massive graw1/2 audience, don't forget, or we'll hear your guys' whining from a whole new crowd.

Then again, we still have Biden. He's always good for a few laughs too!
Biden wrote in his memoir about roaming rough neigborhoods looking to get into fights after his wife died.
I would not ###### with that guy.

To me sales promotions means exactly what it says, placing a product on sale (lowered price) for promotional reasons. Now if they would have said "increased advertising" or "marketing" then yeah, I could see the reason for the fuss. At any rate they were talking about previous products and not the current ones so I don't understand the connections that people were trying to make with future releases.
Yeah, exactly. This has nothing to do with games development, this is a businessman telling his investors he intends to take steps to move product that didn't meet expectations. There is not really anything confusing about the working, i can't quite understand where this silliness came from.
-
I think many developers just saw it as a tech demo and tried to see how many models they could have running around the screen (cough gears2)
Nawh, that's instancing, it's an old trick that recently got into UE3 -- not pushing real polygons, exactly, a kinda bizarre workaround.
Anyway, it entirely depends on when the game got into development. Dunia is a graphics engine, the game doesnt have to play like FC2 to use it, and Ubi was quite clear about their plans to put future games on the platform. That said, if RSE or the Ubi house working on the game got into development before Dunia was totally locked down (probably mid-late FC2 dev cycle) it's likely they're using their own solution.
-
That's actually really cool. I can't imagine it seeing very widespread use as anything more than a proof of concept to get a more purpose-oriented device built though, the US army ordering a massive amount of Apple products seems unlikely.

"They removed lean because they didn't want their game to have lean..." and why make such an extreme tactical change from previous releases? If ya remove lean for me, remove it from the AI too...or else call it an arcadish consolish piece of run and gun...or DOOM3. Seems silly to have you turning things over for cover only to remove the ability to fully use it!
mig

I don't know anyone on the creative team, I wouldn't know.
Fear WAS always designed to be a very fast pased run and gun (a market of games PC gaming invented and perfected, not consoles) so maybe the developers didn't want players getting bogged down with lean and peek when they could be, you know, using the ridiculous slowmo and melee that the game is designed around?
-
... PC was primary dev platform guys, any downsizing is gonna be felt on the 360 side, not the PC side.
They removed lean because they didn't want their game to have lean, not some silly technical restraint.
-
Good luck and stay safe, man! Thanks again for serving.

I think that it is silly of them, (RIAA/Whoever) as these are not for profit things, that are seen by thousands and if they like the music they are more likely to go out and buy it.
I think that don't understand us.
I think that is legally liable and could easily be brought down by lawsuits unless they take steps like this.
But hey, go ahead and keep calling them evil.

The other door into the rivet city broken bow is... through the broken bow. Swim around.
And become rapidly irradiated? I looked by where to the planes have fallen down, no way of gettig up there (due to the angle of the planes, there's no way of climbing on to of them to reach the lower deck of the broken bow)
Ghoul scientist? I have seen one somewhere. Is it the one in the ghoul city of Underworld?
No. He's in a station east of aryefu or whatever.
And yeah, take some rad-x first and be ready to use some radaway when you're out of the water. The entrance is underwater.

Well CoD has 2 developers, Treyarch and Infinity Ward, who share resources. That's why games come out twice as fast as some other companies. They alternate releases. IW did 1 and 2, 4 and now 6. CoD3 and 5 were developed by Treyarch. Good strategy IMO. And all of the games have been good, IMO.
I think this will help explain your question, Rocky. You know this is the same strategy Ubisoft used, right?
Anyway yeah, snake summed it up. 2-3 year development cycle per game, 1-2 year between releases, by cycling developers.

I never see flight sticks as being worth the effort for action flight sims, though, man.
Like, Ace Combat is amazing, but seeing as it doesnt adhere to realistic physics or combat at all is it really possible to make it more immersive or fun with a flight stick? It seems made with a controller in mind.

Guys, I'm stuck on one side-quest. I'm in the process of delivering Lucy's letter. I've been to Arefu, and found out what happened to her parents while attempting to deliver the letter to them. Now I'm to deliver her letter to her brother, Ian. Therein lies the problem; the guy at Arefu said something about Ian could be in one of two places - Moonshine Outdoor Cinema or Hamilton's Hideaway. I been to and thoroughly explored both places and Ian isn't there. I've even been over at night because I remember that guy saying something about Lucy's family traveling about at night. But still no sign of him.
I believe he says three places. Anyway, one of them is going to have a ghoul scientist in it -- talk to him, go out the trapdoor in the back of his office, and search around the metro system until you find The Family.
The other door into the rivet city broken bow is... through the broken bow. Swim around.

being a good shotgun fighter is about setting up your perks. Get uh... Stopping power or the one that lets you run longer, your choice, and whatever the one that lets you shoot more accurately from the hip is. And lots of flash grenades. sprint constantly, throw flashbangs ahead of you into rooms, breach in and unload from the hip with the shotty. Should be fairly easy to top the leaderboard on smaller maps. Aim center of mass!

Alright, i know how you guys feel when i post about how fun GRAW1/2 on the 360 are now.
Fallout3's a great game and all but it's a total perversion/simplification of one of the most incredibly produced RPG franchises there has ever been. It's oblivion with guns, guys.
Do yourselves a favor and check out F1/2, there's a definite GR-GRAW vibe about fallout3's status as a 'sequel'.

Apex, i admit i made a lot of statements without any evidence to back them up -- it's out there, and you honestly deserve it for the quality of discussion you're trying to have, but i'm really exhausted of the whole debate, having bashed my head against the wall long enough that i can't really be bothered to dig it up. I won't match you point for point, but i will at least offer a little legit information, you seem to deserve more than my usual scornful ranting.
Considering their games outsold GR it's fair to say they're doing ok, at least. Considering they're a publicly traded company...
Google 'Ubisoft Growth' and your year of choice -- the company is rolling in money, and it's a fact. If you want a specific source, how about forbes? They mention gr (GRAW, judging by the dates) and r6 (vegas, again) by name.
Incredible growth considering the market at the time
As for your IGN link, the editorial opinion IGN on GRAW may come into question. You say they think ubi is killing a franchise.... That article was written before their recent games, which tend to get editor's choice. Hit up metacritic too, Vegas and Graw were massive critical successes.
BFS's funding --
We have spent a year and a half talkingwith publishers trying to find a partner
to both fund and publish Ground
Branch. During that time BlackFoot
Studios has managed to stay in business
and lay the foundation for a successful
company. However, regardless
of the foundation, there needs to be
progress with building on top of it. I
have self funded this company up to
this point and unfortunately we have
not been able to find an appropriate
entity to fund our projects so we have
been forced to also seek contract work
on outside projects. This is not a sustainable
business model for us so the
time has come to take our future in our
own hands and work under our own
resources and be 100% responsible
for the outcome.

Stonedecker's experience is that he's a brilliant level designer and hopefully just as good at designing games, but he actually has no credited experience as a director of a tactical shooter under his belt to my knowledge. As much as he may know about tactical shooters (i think he's a perfect person to develop one) that resume is not necessarily the kind that will impress investors -- this is not an insult to the man at all, i'm excited about the titles he's working on, but we need to be realistic. Just because he worked on rb6 does not make his name a financial powerhouse in the industry, and does not automatically help him recruiting talent of investors to his company. I wish the best of luck to him, but it's not like this risk he's taking is a done deal.
Parts of my post that really are purely my own opinions and conjecture are ->
-That it is a minority which is unhappy with GRAW. I admit that's only my own observation and i have no numbers to back it u. Personally i really think we'd see a bigger dent in sales if it was the case. I was a big fan of another franchise ubi changed radically to please a mainstream crowd, and despite how important the hundreds of us complaining wanted to feel, when the game outsold the previous ones in the franchise it was hard to feel like a majority anymore.
-That a smaller company is better suited to target the niche crowd. Again, my own opinion. My logic is that moving more units with less profit on each is how a big company is conditioned to operate and moving a small number of units to a small market is how a small company is conditioned to operate. This is not always the case, but i personally feel it applies in this situation.
If there's anything else you'd like me to address specifically i'll PM you or start another thread, i think this is enough of this filling up yours.

well, this still is a beta ( a public one that is ), and it's a blast playing with

upp for a mission or 3 this weekend?

Due to some computer troubles i haven't been able to play Arma for months.

Check out the ACE mod that was posted in the Arma section, you're going to see improved ballistics, weapon performance, and a better medic system.

But perceiving GRAW as bad games and blindly criticizing ubisoft and attacking the Devs is much of what goes on around here, and what i was responding to. I'm all for you guys saying you want [GR] back, it was one of my favorite games too, that's why i started posting here.
But it's no small wonder the developers don't pay this community much heed when they continue to spout nonsense about ubisoft going downhill financially and being some kind of an evil emire -- i'd say they're pretty proud of the games they worked on.
