  1. This video showcases some of the bugs, but it's better quality that YouTube.

It looks good and all, but I never thought I'd be one of those people who complain that developers think the only way to make a game look gritty is to use a colour palette of browns and greens.

Wait till you see some more screens. That's just the weather/terrain in the area, the game has a pretty complete, realistic palette.

  2. Sketchup is a fantastic visualization tool man, dont knock the work just because of the tool you're using.

If you want to use the asset for games or a render, sure, youll have to remodel it in max or blender or something and fix some more solid topology, but this is a great way to learn to observe forms. Keep it up :)

  3. Something to keep in mind is that all of the best examples of PC patching (valve, relic, blizzard) are online games played primarily under a server browsers/network maintained by the developer. It's easy to collect data and efficiently deliver patches to their users. This is one of the primary benifits of using an internal system like Steamworks.

  4. Blizzard last patched Diablo 2 in mid 2008 -- the game was released in 2000.

Battlefront supports their games spectacularly, the latest Combat Mission game hardly resembles the product that was released two years ago and is still getting updates. That said that may be more out of necessity than good nature, the game was fundamentally broken on many levels when it first released.

Valve is still patching and, in the case of their newer games, adding content, to their products regularly.

  5. Ok, what am I missing? The graphics are great and the zoom feature is straight out of Supreme Commander. Where's the actual gameplay? From the videos of gameplay on gametrailers, it's like he isn't even doing anything. You click a unit and tell it to attack and then that's it. Where's the strategy? I felt like I was watching a movie...

It looks like it's structured more like a Turn Based strategy game (specifically the Advance Wars mold) or, if you aren't familiar, a boardgame, in its gameplay. You put units in position to exploit other units, it's less military tactics and more old fashioned game strategy.

With all of the glitz and cinema of the realistic ww2 appearance, obviously. Personally i think it's a great idea, it's good to see Ubi going with some creative, non mainstream ideas.

  6. They shouldn't bother. After Company of Heroes many have expectations of a WW2-RTS that cannot be reached. We could already view the battlefield in CoH as well(not to mention World in Conflict).

Let it go Ubisoft, you will always be a mile behind.

Except it has nothing in common with either game in gameplay.

I have to admit, ubisoft has not put out many games that have impressed me since Ubi and RSE's 360 GRAW, but this looks spectacular:

  7. Ubi is definitely releasing a lot of garbage shovelware.

However... All of ubi's big name games score consistently pretty well. GRAW, Vegas, hawx, end war, Assasins Creed, Prince of persia -- look them up, they're all 70s-80s on the Metacritic scale. This article isn't exactly an indictment of the Tom Clancey games they've been releasing, they're all scoring just fine on metacritic.

  8. Anyway, i'm surprised at how good of reception you guys are giving HAWX, i may actually have to try it out. I was assuming it'd be nothing more than a straightforward Ace Combat clone, and seeing as i'm pretty content with the AC series i wasn't planning to check it out. It must have something more to offer if it's impressing you guys, so i'll give it a try when i can

I never agree with you Sup and once again I'm not :P

hmn? I never said i expected a sim, i'm expecting a flight action game with some new wrinkles to the Crimson Skies/Ace Combat/Rogue Suadron gameplay style.

WK, there are plenty, and what do you mean by 'turn back the clock'? It seams as if you're proposing any game design feature you don't agree with is archaic. Flight action games usually allow a 3rd person camera, a lot of people play them because they think the planes look cool.

Anyway it's obviously a console port, so if i check it out i'll check out the console version -- shame it's got those compatibility issues with the joysticks, stuff like that is the only real, objective quality issue ubisoft keeps having with their games.

  9. just a note, as HAWX will not run with 178.xx and forces you to get 182.xx or it will not run.

That isn't exactly unusual or unnecessary though, games have been demanding the newest videocard drivers (or utilizing features exclusive to them) since we got dedicated graphics cards, and i'd have to say the forced update message is a huge stepup from the old inexplicable blank screen crashes we got in a lot of older games.

  10. Sup, if you call that blind criticism and attacking then I really wonder how you interpret your own posts!

Additionally, I have to ask myself why I apparently wasted my entire post to explain the underlying desperation to you, seeing that this is all you have to offer as your answer. Admittedly, it disappoints and saddens me, but maybe this is just what you were aiming for, in which case I offer you my congratulations - objective complete. :(

I wasn't really looking to make a big deal out of any of this. I'm not attacking the entire community, or anyone in it -- i'm just pointing out the silliness of lightspeed 'shuddering to think' of a person's first experience being to work on an award winning top selling title.

  11. But perceiving GRAW as bad games and blindly criticizing ubisoft and attacking the Devs is much of what goes on around here, and what i was responding to.

Show me who blindly criticized Ubisoft or attacked the developers in this thread!

how long [the development team] have been involved in the series and what was their first experience with the game.

    i shudder to think.....

"my first experience of Ghost Recon was GRAW..."

  12. But it's no small wonder the developers don't pay this community much heed when they continue to spout nonsense about ubisoft going downhill financially and being some kind of an evil emire -- i'd say they're pretty proud of the games they worked on.

Just to correct that misnomer, the developers do indeed pay this community heed, they have a history of it, and continue to do so.

Trying to link an individuals personal opinion regarding a publishers financial viability to the attention a developer is likely to take of a communitys feedback on game mechanics is absurd.

It's more of a general attitude and less of an individual person, but i stand corrected -- i guess i was basing my assumption on the general attitude around here that Ubi and RSE are 'abandoning their old fans'.
