Heinelein presented a future where soldiers and ex-soldiers had the political power to decide to go to war or not. Politicians that never went to war or had to face war, sit comfy in their chairs and send other people to die. Soldiers that saw battle and the horrors of war, would (ideally) think twice before sending other soldiers to war and would do it only if necessary and not light-hearted. I think that's the pro of the society he imagined and i think that's the bottom line of the point he was trying to make.
This is a verry good observation, @Yoda...and there was one other important thing about Heinlein's hypotetical world; although citizens had a right to vote and thusly participate in political decisions, that right was put "on ice" for the duration of their active military service. It only became active after they would left the active service and continue with their civilian..er, pardon me, citizen life. That part is important, IMHO, as it prevents the military to act as a large group of "one-minded" registered voters, a political party if you want..a political party with guns. It is also the element that strongly distincts Heinlein's society from any form of fascism, where the military played a very active political role.

@300mag, once again..thaks for the links..I will check out the HS 2000 forum and see if there's any info on laser sights.
As for the price of the HS 2000 in Croatia, a regular 4'' barrel model costs 3800 KN (aprox. $500) Prices for other two models aren't defined yet, but the rumour is the 5'' barrel (tactical) model will be significantly more expencive

And don't even ask about the sub-compact 3'' barrel model, the waiting list over here is 4 months!!

I just took a look out the window...it's snowing heavily again, the temperature is +1°C...usually, I don't mind a snowy winter, but it looks like roads will become unpassable again..dammit, and I got a date tonight!
-
@300mag, thanks for the link! From what I can tell, HS 2000 models will be identical, with one exeption...all 9mm models sold here have 15rd clips.
Now tell me one thing..is there an underbarrel laser sight/marker available for HS/XD pistols? My arms dealer tells me there are universal laser sights that can be mounted on HS, but I'd like to upgrade my gun with custom tailed model.
PS: too bad the sub-compact model wasn't available sooner over here...it looks like a perfect Valentines gift for a girlfriend..lol

I'm not sure if this post belongs here, so a note to the administrator: move it to the apropriate forum if needed.
IMI Metal, Croatian company that makes HS 2000 , has enriched their offer with two new models, both variations of HS 2000. I don't have the designations of the two new models yet ( I've gotten the info from my arms dealer only yesterday), but I'll try to post both the pictures and speciffications ASAP.
From what I was told, one model is a "baby" HS, small gun that fits into a palm of a hand.
Now the other model is much more interesting to me...it's a "prolonged" version of HS 2000. The barrel is 2 cm longer (4 1/5 of an inch), providing increased accuracy, higher initial velocity and acordingly increased effect on the target. Plastic hand grip, I was told, will now be available in the new color, green, besides the traditional black.
Additional info will be posted as soon as I aquire them.

Just today, an anti-war march was held in Zagreb, Croatia'a capitol. Or at least, that's what it was announced to be...as I feard, it turned into anti-American demonstration. Nice move, now that Croatia's about to join NATO...
I was waching those demonstrants, mostly pseudo-intelectual students in their 20s, and it got me thinking how they probably don't even remember the war in Croatia...at the time I was their age, fighting for my country, they were somewhere safe with their momies, yet now they want to crusify our goverment for sending our MPs to Afganistan with German contingent...
Funny how those self proclaimed pacifists tend to be agressive in their rallies...

@Moaks, you have nothing to apologize for..I agree with you, in the most part. It's just that I don't see Heinlein's utopian society as a form of facism. In fact, I don't see any form of facism as a technocracy- far from it. Facsist societies were hardly led by the most fitted people for the job...
-
@Joe, have you read the book? It wasn't the dictatorship, more like a form of technocracy. And isn't it always the best to have the right man doing what he's most fitted to do?
Now, that Gettysburg insinuation...if you read the book, then you know races or nations weren't an issue in Heinlein's hypotetical world. And btw..all men are not equal- and I don't mean it in a racial way either- it's just that some are taller, some are shorter, some are talented to be physichists, some to be artists...no law or goverment can change that.
Heinleins society was divided into Citizens and Civillians- the difference beeing that A Citizen is taking a responsability for the body politics and defending it with it's life-if nessessary. A Civillian does not. Therefore, only Citizens were allowed to vote. I agree, that seems a bit radical...but if you take a look at the society today, you'll find alot of registred voters which never vote as they are not interested in participating in politics, yet they are the first to complain about their goverment, they frown upon police, yet again are the first to cry "and where was the police when we needed them?!" when something goes wrong....and that's only the bottom shelf. As you climb up, you'll find corrupted judges, corrupted politicians...
And let's not forget the crime rate today, inefective penal system (perticulary for juveniles)..most of that was eradicated in Heinlein's world.
You can go ahead and call it a dictatorship, but it was still a healthy system in which each individual had the oportunity to grow and reach for the limits of his/her abillities.
If I had to choose between corrupted democracy we have today and Heinlein's technocracy (or dictatureship, as you called it), I think I'd choose the latter...
-
I'm much more fascinated with Heinlein's idea of society as he presented it in the novel..I belive the novel was even put "on ice" for a whille, as some critics were scared that it might encourage political hard-liners to transform the US into a military/police state and solve the cold war issues with USSR trough open war means.
Still, one cannot help contemplating Heinlein's concept...seeing all the coruption, moral decay, crime rate increasing...maybe such society would be an up-trade..?

roughly, what are the polly counts for the weaps?
Roughly, 1500...I went a little overboard with details...

LOL..I agree with @hotpants...there are numerous ways to make a custom texture for a fictional weapon..one could clone a pieces of textures of existing actual weapons, or create it completely from scratch, materiel texture and everything, then take screenshots of that weapon and use it for texture trough a "standard" weapon modeling....

The Dogs of War- Christopher Walken and Tom Berenger as hard mercenarys
Black Hawk Down-enough said
Eagle has landed- WWII German paratroopers on a mission to assassinate Churchil
Charlie MOPIC- IMHO the most realistic Vietnam movie ever

@xG5kdo, you are partialy right..it wasn't the Bosnian Serbs, it was domestic, Croatian Serbs (22% of Croatia's population before the war was Serbian nationality), and JNA (Yugoslavian National Army).
Here is a political/historical background of the war (I'll try to be as short as I can)
1)After WWII, a former Yugoslavia was formed, consisting of 6 republics. They were (from north to south) Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia&Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia
Each republic had constitutional right to declare independance, but no one dared to declare it while Marshal Tito was alive and kickin'
2)1980-Marshal Tito died
3)1990-first free elections since 1945 were held in Croatia. HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) won the elections with a wast majority and put out a pool on declaring indipendance from Yugoslavia. The pool result was over 70% in favour of independance. Simmilar thing happened in Slovenia. The Belgrade goverment intervined and sent in JNA and Federal Police troops. After 9 days of skirmishes, the unprepared JNA was beaten and Belgrade withdrew the troops from Slovenia and let it declares it's independance.
Majority of domestic Serbs state they will never accept living in independant Croatia, form their Millitia and take control of the areas with mostly Serbian population, then they start to spread on neighbouring areas, forcing non-Serbian population from their homes. Croatian police tries to intervine, but gets stoped by JNA. The war, de facto, beguns.
4)Croatia forms ZNG (Unified National Guard) later re-named to HV (Croatian Army) At first not well equipped, ZNG fights defensive war, and during '91-'92, the following regions of Croatia falls under Serbian control; eastern and western Slavonia, parts of Lika, Banovina, Krajina: total of 1/3 of Croatia's teritory.
5) 1993-now well equipped, HV launches Operation Flash (Bljesak) and regains control of western Slavonia and part of Banovina in only 36 hours
6) 1995-Operation Storm (Oluja) begins. In 4 days, 95% of ocupied areas is back under Croatian control. The City of Vukovar and region around Dubrovnik were later regained trough political means.
Virtually all units of Croatian Army participated in Operation Storm. I was a member of 140th regiment which was asigned to the 2nd Guardian Brigade of HV, the Thunders. We acted in the area around the town of Glina.
Here you can find out more.

Acording to my research, Pindad did improve the basic FNC model...FNC has only 2 fire mods, full auto and single shot...Pindad SS1 series have improved fire selector that includes 3 shot burst.

But if anyone out there who has seen combat perferably desert storm feel free to let me know what its like so I can somewhat prepare myself.
@Bill, I've been in Croatian army back in '91-'95, and participated in operation Storm, when Croatian army regained control of 1/3 of our country which was ocupied in only 4 days. So yes, i think I can say I've seen some action...now, it's hard to give you any speciffic guide lines..you will be fighting in a desert, and over here it was woodlands/urban combat, but still...here are some general pointers;
1)never underastimate your enemy (don't go in too cocky like a cowboy thinking you'll be fighting disorganized ragheads who can't shoot straight. Respect your enemy-I'm not saying you have to like them, just take them seriously)
2)never underestimate yourself- remember your training, don't give in to fear, take control if needed
3)treat your equipment with love, and it wil love you back- keep your weapon clean and ready, your helmet straped, your body armour adjusted...keep ammo clips reachable if needed. I used to put some ammo clips in my field jacked pocket before going into action, as they were easier to reach there then in a pocket of my belt ammo pouch. (back then we didn't have combat wests)
4)preserve your ammo- shoot only visible targets, otherwise you're just giving your position away and waisting ammo
5)use hand grenades for cleaning buildings and simmilar strong holds-don't stick your head trough the window before you threw in a frag nade and let it does it's share
This is all I can think of from the top of my head..if you want to ask me something more speciffic, feel free to contact me via PM or trough this post.

Here are my latest additions to AUS_Viper's mod..SS1-V2 and SS1-V5...

SS1-V2, also a copy of FNC PARA, but with 10cm shorter barrel

SS1-V5, the most compact version of SS1 series, with 225mm barrel (as opose to 449mm on V1 model)

Me want BIG gun with BIG rounds who causes BIG wounds and creates BIG piles of dead people....
@Tollen, you're sick man..lol...ah, you know I say it affectionatly

-
I downloaded the mod yesterday and played first 3 missions...all I can say is GREAT JOB! Mission scripting is superb, the idea of putting in an air support is just mind blowing...nice weapons, great new sounds and sound effects, no bugs noted so far...in short, when compared with official expansions (DS and IT), this mod, IMHO, is every bit as good as the "real thing".
-
Try increasing priority for your mod..if that fails, start a new campaign with your mod active and set to highest priority...the specialist should have your names as they unlock.
-
Those models look great, there's no question about that..still, there is a down side to putting a large back pack on a character- it count's as a hit/kill zone in GR engine, so the bigger the back pack you put on a character, the bigger the target you're becoming for tangos. (at least it is so if a back pack is modeled as a part of a character..I'm not sure about attachments)
It's still possible to balance that in a mod, with, say, making a kit files which would give a character with back pack a large amount of extra ammo, or extra demo charge..something usefull that would compensate for being a nice fat target.

Thanks, @Earl, great pic..but I'm actually looking for this model:ACOG Reflex

-
Just a small request, cause I think it would make your renders look much better.
Noted.
-
TO bad, but it´s true... Earl didn´t include any thing without any kind of optical sight´s (Trijicon Reflex/ACOG and some others)
Is there a site with good pics of Trijicon Reflex sight? I found some pics, but not good for textures..I'm looking for nice side pics.
And @Ruin...nice work!

-
i just got an idea and decided to make some guns that arent really realistic but would be fun to play with
I don't see why it would be unrealistic...all those accessories are available for M4, aren't they? I made a simmilar weapon for an update of my mod..Tavor TAR-21 with 100rd C-mag...I have supressed version and with RBG-1 GL mounted underbarrel...talking about great firepower!
HS 2000- new models
in Real World Military
Posted
@300mag, thanks mate, but as I live in Croatia, I would have to import that XD here, and the customs would cost an arm and a leg..lol
I saw the price list, but I have to tell you the prices over here are much different. If for e.g. you're buying 40SW HS2000 here, you have to pay 4600KN, as opose to 3800KN for the 9mm model (thats $613 vs $506)
Based on that, I can only presume that the tactical model will also be significantly more expencive...
Never mind, if I realy feel the urge, I'll sell my regular HS2000 and buy a tactical 5'' model....
In fact, if I find a nice laser sight for my HS2000, I'll be as happy as a baby..
(not that I realy need it, I can group my shots inside a 3'' circle from 35ft)
