I have a 9800xt. I figured out that I am running on cat version 3.7, circa 9/4/03. Anyway, I noticed cat 3.8, circa 10/8/03, has a boatload of new features. The biggest one being ATI'S Overdrive function. My question is this: do I need to install every cat update since 3.7, or can I install cat 4.2 and that will include all the updates since 3.7?..thanks.....

...yep...it ain't a bad idea....any thought on how I can monitor the 9800xt's temp/fan speed?.....I looked through manual........thanks.....

well, I think the problem of no AGP texture acceleration is fixed. I reinstalled the MB drivers. I then discovered that the 9800 XT has a "utility" called smart cart or something like that. At the top are options for the PCI, but at the bottom are functions for the AGP slot. One was for read and one was for write, options being on or off. Of course both selections for AGP were set to off. I switched them to on and the next dxdiag I ran, AGP texture acceleration was enabled.
Check this out. Before I did any of the above, I was making some adjustments in the 9800xt's control panel under open gl and 3d. I found that the antialasing option was the one giving me trouble with MOHAA running but not displaying. As soon as I unchecked "application preference" for it(antialasing), MOHAA would run but not display. All the other options on open gl and 3d tabs were set to high and anatropic filtering was set at a moderate level.
I checked the cats that came with the 9800xt. They are like version 7.93 and the most current is 7.98. I left the older driver in place for now until I see if any more issues arise.
I downloaded dx 9.0b and was going to install it. It started but said it needed to conect to the internet? Why? Just as well. I'll run 9.0a and the older cats and see what bugs show up. I don't believe in installing new stuff unless one is doing so in an attempt to address an issue. Unless its new game files
, of course! -
thanks...I appreciate your help...I'll let you know how it goes.....

thanks.....just one final question..since the K8V Deluxe board is based on a VIA chip, will I be able to tell the drivers apart?
-
it was a VIA KL133 chipset / board made by Trigem....HP XT 933.....
-
....don't recall formatting it....remembered to remove the old video and sound card drivers, but not the drivers for the old motherboard....yeah, thats kinda important
....can I simply uninstall the old MB drivers and then reinstall the drivers for the new MB?
-
I think I may have found an issue...when I run dxdiag, under dx features, AGP texture acceleration is not enabled....nor can it be, meaning I don't have the option to simply hit enable.....
....hmmmmm...
-
thanks....I'll check it out

-
can I simply reinstall 8.1?....will it write cleanly overtop of 9.0a?....
-
I found one issue on the pc I just built. It is only associated with, sigh...I know...I know....beat me now over the head
...the MOHAA games.
.....here are the specs:windows me....yeah, slap me for this one too

dx 9.0a
amd 64 bit 3200
asus k8v deluxe
1 gig kingston ram ddr 400-2 sticks 512
lite on cd-r
lite on cdrw
western digital 80 gig-7200 rpm/8 mb cache
radeon 9800xt
sound blaster audigy 2 zs
enermax 460 watt
thermaltake xaser case
19' NEC mutlisync monitor
The medal of honor games will start up fine...console flashes by as the files are intialized....but then nothing comes up on the monitor...game is running though...when I force mohaa to shutdown and restart in safe mode, game comes up on my monitor...I can then crank up the settings and it runs fine....last night I got the mohaa games all up and running...details cranked to the max...I shut down and rebooted my pc a few times and these games all ran fine...but...I swear...I'll go home tonight after work and boot my pc up and the issue will start over again.....the mohaa games will run but not display on the monitor
..this is only an issue with mohaa...Yeah, maybe its a message from the gaming gods not to play mohaa
mohaa games run fine on my old pc....windows me....geforce mx 420 64 mb...dx 8.1
How can you tell what version of the catalyst software you are running with the 9800 xt and should I upgrade to dx 9.0b?
-
thanks...just posted over there...I'll let you guys know what info I get......
-
cool...thanks everyone....Windows ME has never given me any trouble....except that I notice that when I run msconfig and uncheck the bottom three items in the selective startup, my system will register system resources 99% free...then I'll play a game or something and shut that application down and check the resources...and it'll be like 90% free...so what is hogging up the 9% when nothing is running?...yeah..I need to consider XP....that'll be awhile....as I am now officially poor.....
I ran 3DMark03 and got a score of like 5450 I think it was....not sure what is good or bad for a setup like mine as I am new to the benchmarking thing, but I got the feeling it was on the low side
, thats what prompted me to ask you guys about tweaking....the machine runs awesome despite whatever the benchmark says.....Raven Shield, RTCW, Soldier of Fortune II,NOLF2, Medal of Honor, Max Payne and of course GR
all run like insanely fast and smooth with all details set to max .....one last question, what would be a normal operating temperature range for this cpu?......thanks......
-
I got my new system together and running with hardly any trouble. Managing the wires was a pain. I have two questions. First, I notice that dxdiag shows my 9800XT at only 255 mb of memory and system memory only shows 1022 mb...when they should be 256 and 1024 respectively....why doesn't the system recognize all the video and system memory?....is it kinda like the hard drice capacity deal where you may have an 80 gig drive but it only truly has a capacity of 76 gig?....just wondering...secondly, can anyone advise me on some tweaking?.....I don't want to do any overclocking....any suggestions would be appreciated...I set all the cpu/memory settings to auto/default....I ain't gonna mess with any of that till I know what I am doing.....

Raven Shield is very good....awesome graphics...pretty good a.i., both friendly and enemy...if you are into detailed in depth planning....you got that here...as does all the Rainbow 6 series...runs pretty good...it runs very well on my Geforce Mx 420 64 mb...and my Radeon 9800 XT runs it like lighting...as it should.....weapons...what an awesome selection of weapons, both primary and secondary....one drawback....the objectives are repetitive...but...it just does not have the feel of GR.....can't put my finger on it......

ok, what gives....I am on the mission where you have to capture the general in the train tunnel...I have done that....I have killed everyone and taken the papers from the officer that was with the colonel....but it still won't complete...I have tried running out the far end of the tunnel, but you can't was you get slapped with a leaving the mission area message....I read somewhere you have to leave the area and something about a wagon....what do I have to do to get this to end?!

-
...gonna download the benchmarking software today from futuremark.com...I am new at running these tests..heck, this was the first rig I built...I am learning all kinds of stuff!!!!

-
.....I have looked at the fx 5950 vs the 9800 xt for a while...while the 5950 does have higher clock speeds, the 9800 xt makes up for it by having more piplelines...in the end I looked at tests rated in fps, like at toms hardware....and about 70%-75% of the time the 9800 xt came out on top...when the quality adjustments/resolution goes up, the 5950 really takes a big fps nose dive compared to the 9800 xt....I finished, mostly, my rig last night and the installation was a snap for the 9800 xt...don't have any numbers yet, but damn....its fast!!!!!...

yeah...rtcw is one of the best shooters out there....I play it a few times a week.....

from what I can tell, its just a shade faster. I have been at motherboards.org and tomshardware.com reading up on all the info.I was thinking about getting the fx 5950, but after taking an objective look at the 9800xt and the fx 5950, to me, the 9800xt is better. The bench mark tests show the 9800 xt being faster in, ball park terms, perhaps 70% of the tests.Image quality wise, the two are very close. When you consider that the 9800 xt only takes up one open slot, instead of both an agp and a pci for the fx 5950 and it comes with a coupon for half life 2, its hard to pick the fx 5950.
The clincher was the driver issues. To me it seems Nividia is still working out the driver bugs. I have consistently read that the difference between the two cards really show up as the resolutions go up as well as other quality enhancing settings.
I have never had any trouble with my previous Nvidia cards. But after looking at all the facts, I am now a Radeon fan. 9800 xt, all the way. Yeah, its only a little faster than the 9800 pro, but what the heck.

I was playing mission 5 last night. The first thing I done was slip around the back side of the hill top that the artillery was on and knock it out. A few minutes later I noticed that some of the kurdish fighters were being killed by artillery fire. Just wondering if I was missing something. If I klnocked out the artillery thus completing that objective, how can the artillery then go active and bring fire done on me? Am I missing something?
By the way, the kit/weapons selection in this mod is second to none..... -
fantastic mod!!!!

....I have only played and completed the first mission, but wow....insertion was really cool!!!
" ....but on my first attempt, my team made land and was working on going around the hill to the right...we had taken out 2 enemies and were aiming at a third when it CTD.....I played it again from the start, praying to the gods of computers and games, and I finished it with no further issues...oh by the way, the guy at the end on the dirt bike near the extraction was cool!!!... especially when I shot him and his bike blew up!!!

I was looking at the AMD Athlon 64 3200 processor. It runs at 2 gig, but with a fsb at 1600 mhz!
" Now, the question is which is faster? This new AMD chip or say a Pentium 4 at 2.8 gig, but with a fsb at 800 mhz HT?

thanks.....you have been a huge help...... :thumbsup:Since I bought my 9800xt in early feb, I never dreamed the cats would be that old...I figured the 9800xt's would sell through the old cats and I would get a newer driver set with my board...oh well I should have not presumed
