  1. Hey that'd be awsome Roco....i really want to just get an OEM version cause its cheaper but i'm hearing different stories on whether the OEM version works or not, and if it doesn't its not like i can return it :P

So i may have to dish out full price for XP :|

What's up sniper....I happen to be that MAC user that Rocco is referring to. Let's lay down a few of the groundworks.

When it comes to PC users, most see MAC as a buggy machine with a buggier OS that mostly yuppies and graphics/video guys s use. (I happen to be a graphics video guy.) As far as the buggy machines/OS, those issues are years behind us. OSX has been solid since 10.1. I have had 6 macs in the last 5 years. My biggest issue is that one had a failed power supply after 3 years of use, and was covered under my extended warranty plan. No biggie. I have owned a G3 533 Imac DV, G4 dual 500, G4 dual 800, G4 Powerbook 17" 1ghz, Dual 2.3 G5 Power PC workhorse and currently at home I have the Imac 20" 2.13 Intel Duo Core with ATI Radeon Mobility X1600 256 VRAM. Never have had any issues with viruses/spyware on any of my macs. Basically what I am trying to say is that I am a MAC user, but I have recently copme to the conclusion that for gaming I need a windows capable machine. I have gone so far to start putting together a gaming PC (with the help of my afz clanmates) for just gaming, especially since the Intel Mac was released, porting of Mac games has drastically decreased. Mac gamers have always had to settle for less titles, usually, not always, released well after the PC titles where on the shelves. Regardless of my gaming migration, I will always own a MAC, my career and the thousands in software I own dictate that. But when it comes to graphic art (print) and video editing/production I choose Apple. Just my preference, and for the most part my industries standard.

So now for the low down:

Almost anything a PC can do, a MAC can do. Not everything a PC can do, a MAC can do, not everything a MAC can do a PC can do, everything a MAC can do and everything a PC can do an Intel MAC can do.

I use Bootcamp efficiently at home on my Imac. I run Windows XP SP2. You must have sp2 or it will not install. I played games such as Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, GR:AW, CS:Source & the Godfather. They all run amazingly well (60+fps) on medium to high settings except for GRAW, I get about 30-40 with all settings on low at 1280x1024. But it is more than playable. Now being the crazed gamer I am, I am looking to build myself a gaming PC. For this reason alone. I could go for that quad core Xeon tower that Apple makes, but I can build a gaming machine much cheaper on the PC side. The only drawback of the IMac & Macbooks that I see is the lack of expandability (video cards & ram), for normal people 256 VRAM & 2 gigs of RAM is plenty.

I would suggest the Macbook with the X1600 with 256 VRAM if you want to run any decent games. 128 might be a bit dissapointing. You will have the advantage of the new Core 2 Duo, but you can never have enough VRAM eh?

Picking your OS is as easy as 1,2,3. Once you install Bootcamp, you will be prompted to insert a blank cd. Your computer will then burn all relevent drivers for windows onto the disc. Follow the directions closely. You will then install XP onto your machine. For a step by step go here Bootcamp. Use Bootcamp, especially if you intend to play PC games. Let your machine fully boot into XP. You don't need to waste RAM and CPU resources running two OS's.

Once installed, choosing your OS is as easy as holding down the Option key (alt) for windows. YOu will see a screen with both OS choices in front of you. Click one, and off you go.

When it comes to your MS Office apps - Word, PP, Exel and so on --> Microsoft Office for Mac. All cross platform, fully compatible apps, documents are cross platform to either OS. I use this at work daily on a PC network. (i'm on a G5 dual 2.3 running OSX10.4.8). So it will be up to you how you want to run you Office apps. If you already own versions for Windows, then just install them in Windows.

Some network issues with Mac and PC do exist, but no major ones. Basically its what the PC can see of the Mac through file sharing. Otherwise you will have no problem seeing networks, accessing them and so forth. If you intend on using file sharing between Mac & PC, be sure to set all your permissions correctly, and it should work pretty well. The only issue I've seen so far is here at work I have an external drive that holds all my music. It if formatted in MAC OS Extended format, and the PC can't see it. Now if this where reversed, say the external was formatted to any of the PC formats, the MAC would see it fine.

Your Mac will come with video editing software out of the box. Edit and burn to DVD out of the box. No trial versions or LE versions. You will be able to organize and play/utilize music(iTunes), video(imovie), DVD creation(idvd), photos(iphoto)<---standard on all Macs and much more depending on what else comes bundled with your machine.

If your looking for portabitlity a laptop is your answer (stating the obvious) Your macbook will come with wireless connectivity installed: Built-in 54 Mbps AirPort Extreme (802.11g)

Built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)

There is plenty more I can ramble about, and I probably will eventually, but I can leave work now

Basically what I am trying to say is you will get the Best of both world (Mac & Windows) with a Macbook. So I give it 2 thumbs up, especially for what you plan on using it for. It can't get any better than that. If your a PC gaming whore, and that's what you plan on doing for the majority of the time, a laptop isn't the way to go anyway, and it would be custom built PC monster all the way.

P.S. Don't forget your Internet security solution for when you are in XP whatever it may be, I use Norton Internet Security. It would be like going to a bachelor party in Tijuana with no Trojans.

  2. Problem I see with 'Warzone' is that some players (mostly pubs guys) would just sit back in a relatively safe spot and spam the crap out of the 'zone' whenever someone came close to it.

I swear there are folks out there who've never fired any weapon other than a GL...

That's where being stealthy takes on new meaning ...all you have to do is tag the zone...smoke grenades may come in handy.

Like I said, we beat this gametype to death on the MAC side of [GR], but it was fun as hell....plus there was the OICW/GL....so the spamming issue couldn't be worse than that. You learn the enemy hiding spots, and the way to attack it/circumvent it.

  3. Maybe one of you modding geniuses, or someone at GRIN can hook it up here.

Personally I like no respawn games. A bit more realistic a bit more intense. The problem is finding other player that are into it. I have played uncountable amounts of no spawn GR1 and Ravenshield.....some of the most heart pounding and fun gaming times I have had. The only thing I could see is that some of the maps in GRAW could promote camping if there is no spawns...and games would run until the end of the timer...frustrating early dyers and emptying the servers.

Suggestion: A gametype that was popular(at least on the MAC side, don't know about Windows) in GR1.

Warzone We played this gametype on the Damn R6 ladder.DBL

Details: To obtain control of the Warzone (marked by grey smoke) simply run through the central area (smoke) marked on your map. The smoke would then change to the color of the corresponding team. Very similar gametype to HH but the twist that works really well is that You DO NOT have to stay in or around the central area to Maintain Control. The team that maintains control for 3 consecutive minutes wins. After maintaining control for 1 minute you will receive a text message, after 2 minutes you will receive another text message and hear a siren. You can also win by eliminating all opposing teams.

Usually played with zero spawns and a 10 minute timer.

This gametype prevents camping/raping, and is really fun to play....very tactical. Would love to see if its possible, and if someone can pull it off.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. For all of you that made maps for GRAW, here is a thumbs up!

Last night i went to XE and Core with a few of there map packs. Unlike GR1 days (except frostbite) every map i played on MP TVT was well thought out, no glitches, and VERY fun to play. This is coming from one who usually hates mods/maps and plays stock only.

Keep them coming... There are a few maybe Grin should make stock so we can use them in ladders.

I may next have to try a few of the co-op ones.

No doubt. The custom maps that I have played are really well made. Lots of fun.

  5. I started to play the campaign again yesterday, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. There are of course a few issues with it, but it was still lots of fun.

I would really love to see this game polished up. Its on the verge of dying (multiplayer TvT), but an expansion/booster/Graw 2 add on may save the day.

  6. Vegas seems to be a bit to much console with the 3rd person peeking and poor AI. If they made an exclusive PC title without 3rd person and console-AI then I would probably be more optimistic.

It got third person peak? :(

    Unfortunately yes.

Some ppl complain about that at the official Vegas-forum. It got 3rd person peak which means that you can see everything around you even tho you're not peeking. And you can even aim at your target before you peak :(

That's why I don't trust RSE right now to make a good sequel to GRAW when all they do is consoles games.

    However, I do hope I'm wrong :)

Why oh why are games that are almost perfect not just improved. We can say it till we are blue in the face, and it keeps on happening. You would think that with all the hundreds and hundreds of games being released that someone would get it right. Why would Ubi & RSE ruin a great title like R6 with lame ass things like 3rd person peak? Auto or shall I say pre-aim? There is Splinter Cell for that. There are other games that can utilize this sort of stuff...why ruin ones that fans like? If this is the case, why would we want RSE to even touch GR:AW at this point. I'd rather the bugs from Grin than the arcadish bs that RSE seems to be cooking. Grin has a chance to step up really big here.

  7. In the 80's a product that billions enjoyed followed the hype. They believed that if like thier competition, they were to have a fresh new image that caterered to the young hip generation, they would stomp out the competion and take a strangle hold on thier industry while hoping no one would notice that it was a lame attempt with a lamer mascot possesing a horrendous aftertaste. That flop was known as "New Coke", and it F'n tanked. The uproar caused it to be abandoned and back to "Classic Coke" they went.

End of lack of sleep induced demented rant.

  8. Gah. The link I posted is broken, but it's due to the weird form of urls DamnR6 uses.

The full conversion and installation instructions are here: http://www.damnr6.com/tet/fullnews.cgi?newsid1047213617,6556,

You'll need to copy and paste the link, rather than click on it. If you do click it, add a comma after the url once it loads and it will take you to the correct page.

I'm not a Mac user, so other than researching methods, I can't really help.

I own the Game of the Year edition for mac and the gold pack for PC. Back a few years ago IT use to be downloadable on DAMN. I guess legal issues forced it to be taken down. I still have that fully functional mac version. Once you get that running you could download and play Frostbite as well. Really cool mod.

If you have an intel mac...install Bootcamp and Windows and give GR:AW a try.

If your looking for some more help with IT, let me know....we can try and figure something out.

  9. Your damn right...

Most of the real fans played the original religiously daily for 4-5 years. DAMN! that's a long time for a game. MAybe not so great for business, but if Ubi was smart , they could have made about 5 more expansion packs, and I bet they would have flew off the shelves.

I would have bought them all and would still be playing everyday.

Now after no GR2, and AW. I wont buy another Ubi product. Unless they really put out a good GR game that is exactly what we wanted without a bunch of problems.

Correction...exactly how "you" would like it.

    That is the problem.

Even the GR fans disagree on what makes it "the" game

GRAW has the immersion and matchability.

It has the SP story line campaign

The maps are big and fully interactive/playable

For me to make it "the game" it's pretty basic

#1 More spawn zones then 2 for matching.

#2 all maps that are playable in one mode are playable in all

#3 current bugs fixed (very important)

#4 Penalty for being hit (it's very little)... injuries and a hitbox showing where you are injured. Arm= worst aim chest = breathing problems and slower run. Legs limp... or at least problems running

#5 make the ret and hearbeat symbol mean something

#6 when post effects are low make the distance fogged or hazed out to emulate the way post effects high is. this gets rid of the distance limit

#7 change the way shadows are handled to increase performance without drawing in front of the player.

#8 change the animation for bringing up the gun to either faster so everyone sees it, or sync it somehow.

    #9 make anticheat stable

#10 add an expansion with different terrain to the mix

#11 add random map function to server

These would do it for me... But i'm sure every Old GR player here has something different.

I don't want GR1. The engine couldn't be fixed to stop the left peek, tiptoe and crator glitches. I've moved on since and don't plan on going back as it's dead.

I think you got most of it there...start with that and the community would be much happier.

Papa6...do you hear the sad music from the end of "the Hulk" tv show? That's a depressing tune.

  10. On the other hand I'll have to disagree with you about Raven Shield. The patches were a nightmare and we never did get an SDK but that game stands way above GRAW with all the different gamplay modes, plus they gave us Iron Wrath free. :):notworthy:

True that. RvS is/was a great game...now when you have something right, why change it? Just modify/improve/add to it. Why, there are literally hundreds of less than realistic so called tactical fps's would they ruin what us the fans so loved about our games? GR:AW is barely there, hopefully it is rectified in the next version/booster. Advice:Take GR1 & RvS....mix them in a pot=perfect fps game.

I bought GR2 for PS. As a huge huge fan of the great contributions to fps games by Ubi (RvS/Gr1) i found GR2 to be a giant pile of dog ######. Single player was from a 3rd person view. Smell the stink? I don't think that people are necessarily looking for replicas of RvS/Gr1, but there were so many things that were right about the both of those games. Multiplayer options are very important. Gr1 had about 75-100 more weapon combinataions possible than GR:AW and RvS maybe more. I'll accept that....maybe with a patch or 2 maybe a booster we will see more. THe gametypes and the ability to play coop on the same maps as multiplayer is one of the greatest inclusions in a competitive tactical fps. When you can't find a server for mp or just feel like polishing up, you can always play the maps your going to play in MP/matches. The fact that this is not possible is one of the biggest mistakes in GR:AW. HUGE. THe lack of gametypes available for all maps is pathetic. If you can play TDM and Domination on say Avenues...you should be able to play HH/Coop/Firefight/Warzone and so on for this map as well. To play other game types you have to play different maps as well. The flexibility doesn't seem to be there.

The in-game lag is horrific. I don't think that players see the same things as they happen. Your sitting, a guy is running, gun down, you shoot..his gun never comes up, your dead.

Most hard core gamers are playing for the gameplay. The ability of a game to not be all bells and whistles, but an extension of your eyes ears and hands. The most beutiful game in the world with bad gameplay/lag/bugs/lack of flexibilty is worse than a game who's graphics aren't as good, but runs smooth and plays real time.

Most of the real fans played the original religiously daily for 4-5 years. DAMN! that's a long time for a game. MAybe not so great for business, but if Ubi was smart , they could have made about 5 more expansion packs, and I bet they would have flew off the shelves.

The frustration comes from those that just want/expect GR:AW to be all they hoped for. I bet even if it fell slightly short there wouldn't be nearly the complaining that there is. If there was a bit more information on what we could expect it would be nice too. Its not sensitive military secrets we are after, its a game that many people pass time with. Please clue us in to some of the plans for the future of this product (on the PC the way it was meant to be) , so we can stop sounding like a nursery in a maternity ward, before enough people move on, that it is just dead.

Make a solid core that is expandable, and add on. If its business/money that is worried about, a solid core of a series will reap the benefits when well accepted. It will be loved, and content add-ons will sell.

  11. I was at my local Wal Mart here and thought I would check the price on GR:AW, it was 29.98 last I looked. They had about 8 in the rack when I looked last and the back ones literally had dust on top of them. This time when I checked, they were gone, all of them, no tag left not a trace, the lady in electronics told me they pulled them because they were not selling. Was there not enough advertisement for GR:AW PC????

Same here in the southern Ohio Wal Mart. Lockdown (Letdown) also got the heave ho! :o Maybe when it gets closer to Thanksgiving they'll bring them back out since turkeys sell good around that time. :P

Direct2Drive still has it at $30

    Direct2Drive

That's a damn shame, for a game that has so much potential. THe reality is that when people pay for something, they expect it to be worth it. There was massive anticipation for this game before its release because of the popularity of the Original. That needs to be understood...that's why people still bring up [GR].

This game was released over 7 months ago, and it is still buggy as hell. The anti-cheat causes multiplayer issues....people crash for using close range gl's, multiplayer lag is seriously frustrating, all these things contribute to a frustrating game that discourages the average gamer. Besides the lack of versatility, options, server customization, weapons, gametypes, maps and battle stats.

The one positive is that there still are plenty of people sticking it out. There are plenty of us that are rooting for grin to smooth this thing out, fans of the title and the series that just want to play this game the way it was intended, hoping it will be fixed, and that there will be an expansion. Personally I get real frustrated with some of the issues at times, but after I go and play some of the "popular games" (like CS:Source & BF2 & 2142) I am left empty and unsatisfied with thier lack of realism. Two cheers for GRin!.... "Rah Rah...fix the bugs" "Hip Hip ...Expansion pack!!!"

  13. Try zooming in and peeking around a corner. (the Q key to lean left or E to lean right). Previoulsy you could do this and stafe 1 step in the same direction with no problem. With the new patch when take a step to the left or right while leening, you lose the leen for a half a second or so and then it automatically goes back to the leen. Anyone else notice this? And does it chap anyone elses ass like it does mine? And why in the hell would they change this with all the other problems the game had? Is everryone readied up? Who knows.

On a positive note the maps load up so much faster now. 8) beautiful.

  14. only one complaint here. Lean around a corner, then take one strafe step. the lean goes upright, then to the lean again. very frustrating... like i have to re-learn my technique all over again. it is very realistic to lean around a corner and side step while still leaning. can we fix it back to the way it was previously? pretty please??????
