Ok most of the talk has been about Dedis... those will be great for those that plan on running or admining servers BUT I will speak about people that I personally know and why they are not playing GRAW...
Most of them do not have a PC that is good enough to run it smoothly. My clan that just recently split up in Raven Shield is the example I offer. Some dont have the money or ability to continually upgrade their PC or get a new one every year. They can still run Raven and some other games so they are sticking to those until they get an upgrade...
I dont think I have known a game that had such a huge hardware requirement jump compared to other games on the market. Thanks to my upgrade for GRAW my other games are running on the highest settings without so much as a drop of sweat hehe.... and now many gamers are just playing the games they know until they finally get that upgrade to be able to smoothly run GRAW, the fact that this game is splitting up clans (not emotionally) makes it hard for the clanmates with good computers to stick around and play it nightly.
NOW, there are many other reasons too, this is just the biggest that I noticed But if I took a poll of all the gamers that I know that play alot of FPS MP games, but not GRAW, I bet that is the number one reason....
-
SP isnt dead... most people play it when they first buy a game ... and very few players play it again after they beat it. What makes a PC game last is MP... simple as that. People have differing opinions on which games are best but the obvious ones that remain around after years are because of MP play. examples: [GR], R6 series (excluding LD), Battlefield series, even the UT series (although I think the original UT was by far the best)...
SPs could be built like many consoles versions but MPs should be nothing of the sort...
Even away from PC, if you thought about an XBOX game that has standing for a long time... the only one that comes to mind is Halo2... Its because it is built for MP... Nearly all the other console games might as well be rented....
The next big PC game will be the one that has nothing to do with a console and everything to do with being built primarily as an MP game...
My Humble Opinion of course

-
I guess its all a matter of opinion. I don't think pollution has changed the way many things have looked in the past 10, 20 or even 50 years, so I doubt it will be much different in 5 years from now. My preference is crisp clean regular colors, that looks realistic. I am not bad mouthing the game by any means, I am sure many people like that sepia look, but I dont.

I have just thrown a dedicated server up entitled "War has begun!!" ... so download and join
: )
just checked, cant find it.

Is it possible to just modify the current DOM maps to have 2 small zones only (spawn zones) like what you did with this one? Essentially, it would be the easier way to give us all temporary TDM maps for now.
-
Hopefully they can release a stable patch next time.. still I got my vote on CTF being the next game mode.. whose with me?
CTF! LMFAO @ that! At least something is making me laugh.. Now I can get through another day waiting for TDM...

||Ghost Squad|| Dm Server was set to 10 seconds but now i have lowed it to 5 seconds with no death limit since i find DM just a good way to unwind
Thanks CHEESE! I think your server was one that I was playing in. I think 3 to 5 seconds is good enough for now.
-
That is only a "good" idea if you also cannot fire during those seconds. But even then,
I personally still don't like the thought of having a team cornered and not being able to
take them out because they have invulnerability on. It's cheesy. If you are cornered in
your spawn you've already lost anyway, might as well get it over with.
Besides that, if you are getting spawn-killed, it's your own stupid mistake for not
defending it properly.
Well I would agree with you if this topic were about DOM mode (or any other team mode) but...
Please read the topic. I am referring to DM (DeathMatch, aka: All vs. All ) only. I am not talking about any team modes. So it is not MY STUPID MISTAKE here... I am just saying that if there is a period of invulnerability for an individual that respawns at a random point, just make it so they can not shoot during that period of invulnerability as well.
-
Well I jumped in and played some deathmatch on a couple servers. In one server it seemed like I could die instantly upon spawning (happened about 3 times per round which sucked with max deaths set to 5) AND in another server I had 5 to 10 seconds before I could get injured/killed. So this must be a server setting.
It's not a bad idea (to give spawners a few seconds of invulnerability) since people regularly spawn next to 'active' players, especially when there is more than 10 people in a server.
The issue here is that the person that spawns, gets to open up and wipe out any active player in sight and its not because the 'active' player wasn't behind cover. Once, I spawned, next to a wall and there was a car right in front of me. There was a player crouched behind cover, right behind the car (pretty much right in front of me). He was in a good tactical position, except for not taking into account that someone like me could unsuspectingly and silently spawn right behind him. Poor fella.
Getting those cheap kills was about as annoying as getting spawn killed...
Anyway, I am not here to gripe too much, but I would like to offer a SUGGESTION:
IF PLAYERS THAT SPAWN ARE NOT VULNERABLE FOR 5 TO 10 SECONDS THEN DURING THAT TIME OF INVULNERABLIITY THEY SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SHOOT EITHER.
That is all. It sure would take the 'cheapness' out of spawn-killing and 'reverse spawn-killing'.

THink of it from the other point of view. You successfully snuck up and got the drop on your prey. You unleash a deadly 3 round bust, center of mass, your target still unaware of your presence. He turns around and shoots you dead. Is ThAT how you want the game to be?
So true. I guess I will just live with it and hope things improve for me

I don't mean to be rude, but it strikes me as odd that you referred to yourself as a clancy game player yet you're not used to being killed before you find out where the enemy is. That's pretty standard in any clancy game due to the damage model. GRAW is actually far more forgiving than most of the other clancy games (excluding Lockdown).
Essentially, it's a matter of watching your angles and utilizing proper cover. Just something you'll have to get used to.
Admittedly some of the MP maps (shanty town most notably) has almost too many angles to watch if you're not moving with several other people, but then that's kind of the point.
Or it could just be that I am not as familiar with the maps yet... In every shooter game there will be times that you don't know where you are getting shot from. It just seems that even with tracers this is happening more than I remember in the other Clancy games I played. My favorites on the PC have been Rogue Spear, GR1 and RvS.
I think it will be just a matter of getting used to the style of play and the maps.
-
I really like the game so far. AND I like the fact that GRIN is actually continually working hard to improve it. But my one main question (stated in the title) is my biggest frustration and I don't know if it can be adjusted or if I'm gonna have to get used to it.
That is the main question I have now and had before the patch. The trace rounds are great when I am seeing other people battle but when I get shot a lot of the time the tracers seem to go from my left to my right before I fall and die. I rarely have time to even turn around to see where I'm getting shot from and even then most of the time I don't find the enemy. I have learned not to go back to the same area because 90% of the time the same camper will get me again... LOL I'm not much of a BF2 kind of guy, Im way more of a Tom Clancy game player, but I find myself alternating between GRAW and BF2 because I get so frustrated getting killed over and over and having no idea where it is coming from.. The realism and graphics pull me back to GRAW... It's a vicious cycle LOL But I'd love to stay with GRAW

Well thanks to Degamer, I learned the yellowishness can be adjusted by changing the sepia_opacity in the post-effects XML file. So, I just kept all the 1.1 blood mod files and changed only the sepia_opacity in the post-effects.xml file and WOW.. Nice blood mod AND much more realistic color (less yellow).
-
OK I took the post-effects xml file from the 1.1 blood mod and reduced all the sepia opacity and cha-ching, now we have the 1.1 blood mod with less yellow... very nice!
Thanks for the info and mod degamer!
-
Remember, if you plan on playing much multiplayer, these mods will make you unable to play in servers with the "Anticheat option".
Oh I didnt know that. It can't just ignore any mods placed in the local/english folders? That's Weird.
Maybe there should be a client-side option to disable mods during MP play...
-
That's partly to do with the S. American light, it's actually a little yellow compared to northern countries.
THat may be true but I dont think its that much more yellow. I saw some of the trailers that showed actual video that the gamemakers used to develop the maps, based on real Mexico City landmarks and the videos didnt appear that yellow.
On another note I just dropped the sepia opacity to about .300 on all maps I like that much better... I was using the blood mod 1.0 instead of 1.1 because 1.1 also includes its own mod version of that XML file. Later tonight I am just going to install the 1.1 after modifying its sepia-opacity in that XML file. Gonna see how well that works.
-
HERE get rid of the yellow, without loosing any of the other nifty post effects.
put this in the graw/setting folder or the graw/data/settings folder? the blood mod adds a local/english folder as well... so i guess i dont know where i put it to make it work

-
2 things.
I DLed another post-effects xml file to get rid of the yellow tint. Will this blood mod, that includes another post-effects xml file, put the yellowish back? or do you have the file to do both?
second thing. I dont have a 'local' or 'english' folder, should I just extract this right to my main GRAW folder anyway?

Well, overall I really enjoy the physics and graphics in GRAW but I still have a minor issue with the graphics that I couldn't quite figure out.... something with the colors looking dull or brownish or yellowish... I just couldnt figure it out. I thought maybe it was just the mexico city 'look' or something. But I just can't shake the thought.
I run the game fine and have nvidia 7900gt. But even looking at some of the screenshots. While many online SSs are better than mine, I realized that the sunlight appears to be giving off more of a incandescent type light (yellowish). That is the best that I can describe it. Now some areas of some maps looks real crisp and the colors seem ok but most of the time I still get this weird haze (I say 'haze' but there is not a clarity issue, just a color issue).
Now I have been playing a lot of RvS in recent years. So I have been used to crisp colors (with blocky textures) and that could be part of my problem. No doubt, the graphics and physics in GRAW blows any other game out of the water, but this one little issue still lingers for me.
It just seems that the sunlight is not quite 'natural' in the game, more like incandescent light.
Can anyone offer some tweaks or suggestions to help with this?
-
Well I bought the game last week and have been playing quite a bit. Fortunately I didn't have to deal with the earliest issues since I bought just in time to install the 1.10 patch. I am VERY impressed with the graphics/physics... VERY NICE!
I really enjoy the game but here are a couple suggestions that will make MP a little more enjoyable.
MP Game Changes:
1) Inventory/Equipment Selection: I do not enjoy having to go into inventory everytime I respawn and reselecting the weapons/accesories that I regularly choose. I would suggest a check box that allows the player to check if they want. The checkbox would be checked if the player wants to keep the same weapon/accessories all the time (providing they have enough points to 'buy' it).
2) Spawn on Squad Leader: Yet another checkbox to respawn on the squad leader automatically if the player has enough points.
3) We can see the trail of regular bullets fired (tracer round for every shot) but not that of grenade launchers? not realistic, nor fair.
Server Settings:
4) weapon cost/starting points: Server admin/settings to allow all players to start with a higher amount of points or allow all weapons to 'cost' zero points. (I don't know what is a feature and what is not at this point because I don't admin any servers, but I have not seen any servers the had anything but default for these two items.)
5) More weapons please.
I'm sure you have already covered most of these (or plan on it for the june patch) but I wanted to mention them anyway.
Thanks for your time and effort with this!

It's supposed to be F5 , but up to 1.06 they commented it out in ctrl_set_def.xml because it conflicted with 'Execute', which they also appointed to F5. In 1.10 , Execute and Execute All where moved to F6 and F7 and Follow was appointed F5.
Well, that;s how it supposed to work, but my F-keys have never worked from day 1.
Thanks for letting me know. I do remember trying the F1-F4 keys once and it didnt work (prior to any patches) but since I use the tactical map for those 4 commands now and I just got used to using the drop-down for follow, I didnt think about going back and trying it. And I did remember F5 and F6 being execute/execute all. It sounds like a good idea to put follow in as F5 and bump the executes back to F6/F7. Hopefully if it doesnt work when I try it, they will update that in the June patch. Thanks for the response.

Alt+F4
HARDY HAR... funny guy... not really. I am not stupid. Your not talking to a noob. Save the worthless comments for someone else.
I just didnt find find a shortcut for it in the manual and I probably use it 'quickly' more than the rest. I usually use the tactical map for the cover/move/ect so they look in a direction that is beneficial (rather than a wall) but when I just want them to follow, a keyboard shortcut would be nice.
-
All the other commands (ie, cover, move, ..etc) use F1 to F4 as keyboard shortcut. Is there is a key to just get them all to follow? Hopefully I didn't just totally overlook something that was obvious. Thanks.

was wondering where bo went.
thought he went to E3?

I've enjoyed the game so far, way better than Lockdown. Maybe the next game will make the character limp when shot in the leg (whether its one shot or 10 to the foot), or be forced to crawl if both legs get shot or if an arm gets shot, the stability is thrown way off, or maybe they can only hold the non-pistols for so long without having to drop it down and rest (if only 1 arm is good) or how about if someone gets shot in the neck they live for however long it would take a person to pass out from a bleed out if their jugular got hit...and on and on
A lot of ideas and a lot of work for a programmer/designers to toss every possible aspect of real life into a game (and this is just one small aspect). They do the best they can with they have now. Maybe the character models in future games could have a lot of those things added.
As far as maps go, like many peopel have said before me, the large rural maps will follow, no doubt about it. My one concern about Mexico city is the yellow/brown tinge that seems to be everywhere. Im sure a satellite image of Mexico City would be more colorful than the image we see while parchuting down into the city at the beginning of SP. Adding a bit more true color to the buildings would be nice but the graphics are still sweet anyway.

Its not impossible. A week or so ago, someone posted a round about way of doing it (God-Mode). I dont know if that thread is still around or what. I didnt write it down or save it because I didnt plan on doing it.
oh, it could be in the ubi graw forums, like I said I dont remember where I saw it.
