  1. Most GR models are photo skins mate! And the one you've just seen was a quick test done to see how the model would look with a skin, I'm just about ready to start putting a proper skin on it though. Be olive green now but I can change that easily. Should have that ready in a few hours if my new 3dsm 5.1 behaves!

  2. Well, I just came across a big problem with upgrading to 5.1! Seems all my character models have lost their envelope settings! They all look like hedgehogs again and have to have their export settings completely re-done. There's just a couple of days work out the window! :wall: Thank god all the characters that were done already have been exported!

  3. Looking great as always Thumper! Hope I can get the redone AK5 C models to look equally good.

And can't wait to see those MG's mate!

And this might be alittle OT but its still concerning the swedish armed forces so...

There is a world of difference between Swedens' armed forces and the US armed forces for example. The main difference being the way soldiers get recruited into service. In Sweden we still have general conscription, in oposite to professional armed forces like the US. Ofcource we do have a few professionals, mostly training officers and such. Once you turn 18 in Sweden you get called to appear at one of several drafting centres where they put you through a series of different tests in order to find out if you are suitable for service, and in case you are, what specific branch and duties that would suit you. All 3 branches (Army, Royal Navy and Airforce) recruit through the same centres, even through the same recruiting officer. So you never know what branch you will end up in although you often do get a choice between a few different duties in different branches.

The difference doesn't end there though, you can get drafted as anything from private to platoon leader! Ofcource the length of service differs depending on if you get drafted as private compared to platoon leader but it doesn't differ by much, private's do 7.5 months of training compared to a platoon leaders 15 months.

    Take me as an example:

Vitually the day that I turned 18 I got the call to show up for my draft, completing it with medium to high results in all categories. Once infront of the drafting officer he gave me 3 options for my service.

1, Mortar squad leader in the infantry

2, Transport/POL squad leader in the infantry

3, Airbase maintenance squad leader in the Airforce

    I choose the 2nd option.

3 days after I finished schools year 12 I was on the bus heading north to where I was to be based for my 10 month training. (And now we are talking NORTH gentlemen! Some 400km north of Stockholm, effectively putting me on a latitude 400km north of Anchrage, Alaska). I was given 2.5 months of basic training and then was to take command of a squad of soldiers, even be responsible for quite abit of their day to day training.

7.5 months later my service was at an end and I got discharged. It doesn't really end there though, this is when you find out if you get placed in Sweden's wartime forces. If you do you can look forward to maybe being called in for repetition training for a couple of weeks every now and then, its years inbetween though. You also get a reactivation code that can, in case of war, be used to call you back into service.

2002 some 44000 young swedes went through their draft, out of them just over 36% (about 12 000) got conscripted into the armed forces.

1400 of them as Platoon leaders

    1200 as Troop leaders

    4700 as Squad leaders

    and 8800 as Privates

That's it for the lesson in how the swedish armed forces work for today.

  4. Guess I shouldn't post here as I'm not really a wannabee, I am ex army. But what the heck!

    BMI 19.2

    9th percentile

    And that's for these stats

    Height: 174cm, 68.5 inches.....5'9"

    Weight: 58Kg, 128Lbs

    and 27 years old.

Guess I'm always going to be a skinny little runt, atleast I make a hard target to hit! :P

  5. I had something similar happen to me without changing versions of 3dsm, all of a sudden all the models I exported with original settings ended up midget size! Tried different settings and when using Meter instead of centimeter as MAX units the guns ended up the right size. Be interesting to see if I'll have to go through this again as I'm in the process of updating my 3dsm 5.1 myself.

  6. I sure did that camo paint on the warthog, took me abit of time to complete too. First I painted the whole thing in olive drab (guess I could of been smarter and used spray paint instead of painting with a brush though) and then outlined the different patches of different colours. Beeing so big patches it was pretty easy to get it to look decent, be alot harder if it was a camouflage pattern with small patches.

  7. I haven't used silver enamel that much but did use plenty of gunmetal enamel for that F15 and that has the same problems. I just had to stir the paint a heck of alot before painting and put on multiple pretty thin layers, eventually it turns out ok. One tip if the surface you are trying to paint on is very smooth and slick to rub it softly using steelwool, gives a slightly rougher surface that the paint adheres to easier.

And magnumkp, lay off the coffe mate ;) I found that out the hard way trying to paint on of the pilots after 3 cups. Never seen a messier paintjob in my life!

Seriously though, painting freehand is hard to do without shaking. Just support your hand against something and it should help some.

  8. Thanks guys :D

And as I said, that's just a test to see how a texture would look on the model. Still not a 100% happy with the smoothing though as it creates a small shadow going through the reciever part. The final version will look more like the version used in the latest trials, dark grey and without the XM8 logo. And I already have the texture for the clip just about ready, really high res too so you can see the individual rounds waiting to be stripped.

And Para, you can still be first with a custom textured XM8 mate. I suck at creating more or less handmade textures! :wall:

  9. Well, I'm getting myself into making an XM8 mod as a side project to SWEBAT. See more info here

@Ogre_h: yes I do sleep mate, now and then that is ;) Right now I suffer from a condition that mostly prevents sleep and it's called "it's to darn warm here downunder to get any sleep!"

@Cobra6: don't think that would work mate, maybe in 3dsm but not ingame as exported models need atleast one .rsb file for texture. Max just wouldn't create on of those when I export. Guess it would work if I did a texture with the different colours needed and applied that to the model but that wouldn't give any details unless I modeled all the shapes.

  10. Seems I have a thing for not yet "released" weaponry, the Shrikes are still in production as Ares Defence seems to have problems with getting parts manufactured. The completed "drop in" Shrike upper recievers should of started shipping in March 2003 but none has been shipped to date, they predict to start sending them out in about a months time.

And now I'm getting myself into the XM8 system, something that's still on the drawing board more or less! Oh well, makes for a challenge although it going to have to be a side project for me as SWEBAT will take most of my time for an unknown time longer!

Yep, I'm doing it, all the versions with all the attachments. Now that I have a decent base model to start from making the different variants shouldn't take me all to long. Good thing is I made it "modular" the stock and front handgrip parts are separate meshes and can easily be swapped for others. Probably the biggest obstacle will be making a texture good enough.

Here's atleast a little texture test of the finished model. This has just been textured using one side shot so it doesn't look all to good atm, but hopefully it will look better once I get a custom texture on it.

  11. As I said in my previous post: read Ruin's character modding tutorial!!! It's what got me started in making characters!

And yes, as you might of found out now characters are alittle harder to make than weapons as you have to take into account that they acctually will get animated ingame. But it's in no way something that only professionals can do! Just try and try again!

    Snow

  12. Yup, it's usually only a matter of a few minutes of work before you can export a model and have it ingame.

And here's what about 1.5 hours with 3dsm gave when it comes to an XM8.

    xm8_wip.jpg

Still got a fair bit of work left to do, mostly smoothing before I can think of texturing it. Still lacking abit of small details too but I've got plenty of polys left to waste as it right now weighs in at 1250.

  13. Acctually no mate, it wasn't really show filmed months in advance. What he did he did infront of a live audience at his reptile park just 2 days ago and the video clips that are now starting to appear online were privately shot videos by spectators. This has been going on and on on the news and radio here in Australia since yesterday, even made front page in todays newspapers.

I have to say I'm on Steve's side in this, he knows what he's doing! Although I know he's been tagged by both crocs and snakes more than once during filming of hes now famous shows. And since this was under fairly controlled circumstances with a captive croc that he's probably fed a 1000 times I can't see the real danger involved for him!

  14. To open .3ds files you have to import them to 3dsm, just click "file" then "import" and choose whatever .3ds file you want to open.

And I'd download all the character models from there, they are named exactly like the .chr files are in the game so it should be easy to find out exactly what .3ds file you need to change and export to get the required changes through.

And I highly recommend you to read Ruin's character modding turorial in the recon section before starting out, will probably save you alot of headaches later!

    Snow

  15. Well, just get me some decent shots of them and we'll see what this poor overworked swede can come up with ;)

Already been asked by atleast one other to make some XM8's but with the image material I have right now it would be pretty hard to get decent textures.

And yes, I admit it. I do have an old work in progress M4 model laying around here somewhere. Yet another of my discarded projects that probably never will see the light of day again, along with an outragously overdone Cheyenne Tactical sniper rifle.

    Snow

  16. Well, your not going to be able to open any of the model files in your GR folder mate! Even with the plugins 3dsm just can't open any of them. That's the bad news. The good news is that all the characters, some attachments and some weapons are available for download in .3ds format, all thanks to Mike Schell.

You can download them all here thanks to San, who's hosting them all in one convinient place.

  17. Thanks guys :D

He surely was a pain in the rear to export! Lucky I had abit of practice making a sniper for Ogre_h that will be used in the White-Skull Valley mod.

And he's to carry 2 versions of the PSG90 made by Thumper.

    SB_PGG90new.jpg

With and without nightvision scope, one or both have added ghille for camouflage. (Can't remember offhand if its one or both :wall: )

@Stalker: think its your eyes mate ;) or the angle of the pic. I haven't changed anything around the wrists so they shouldn't be any thinner than normal.

  18. I for one can agree in a way, seems like everyone is making M4's when there are so many nice weapons around. I don't have anything against M4's or armalite weapons in general it's just that I'd love to see alittle variety. To date I have yet to make an M4 myself :o closest thing to it would be my Shrikes. Although, I have to admit I'm tempted to see just how the community would respond to an M4 made by me as it seems most ppl aren't interested enough in other weapons to even comment on models of them.

@F'n New Guy: the comp you are talking about wasn't to see who made the best MP5KA4 but a modeling and texturing comp, round 2 of the comp was a Sako Rk95 and that's about as far from an MP5 as you can get. Hopefully we'll see something equally interesting in Rnd 3!

  19. Thanks for all the kind words :D

I did alot of building together with my dad when I was younger, mostly planes, but those 2 are my first real models built as an adult and on my own. Well, apart from a tiny little Jaguar fighterjet in scale 1/72 that proved to be to fiddly for me. Got to clumsy fingers to handle 1.72 so I chose to build 1/48 models, would of been 1/32 if the wife wouldn't of innocently asked where in the heck we could put big things like that  . Only downside to it right now is that I'd love to build some of the Swedish fighterjets in 1/48 but they are kinda hard to come by downunder :(

Some day in the future when I can take a break from building virtual models in 3dsm I might just break out that half finished F16 model that the Shrike mod so suddently put on hold.

  20. It's been alittle quiet in here lately due to the holiday season getting in our way, not that that finally is over we are back in buissness as usual! ;)

Here's the latest addition to SWEBAT's characters, our specialist sniper!

Showing him here along with his trusted comrade in arms, our spotter.

    sniper_spotter_1.jpg

    sniper_spotter_2.jpg

Without the ghille so you can get a closer look at what's underneath.

    sniper_spotter_3.jpg

It's a pretty heavily modified Marine_Sniper body with added pockets and thigh holster. The ghille is more or less taken from the original GR sniper and modified to match the Marine sniper's body.

As per usual the texture was made by Tollen and the character work by me.

  21. Scale models were one of my childhood hobbies that I've lately started up again, before GR modding came in its way that is. Just wondering if there is anyone else in this forum with the same hobby?

Here's 2 of my latest models to be built, both in scale 1/48. Acctually the 2 only models I can photo since all my earlier models were to hard to bring with me from Sweden to Australia. Sorry about the bandwith heavy images.

  22. Even if mine is a booring beigh standard tower its been somewhat modded anyways. As it gets pretty hot here during summers I felt I needed more fans inside it but it just didn't have any pre-fabricated fam mounts. Well, that's nothing me trusty old power drill couldn't fix
