Well, after 10 years of flawless service, my Samsung monitor died in it's sleep. Now I need you all to educate me so I can pick a new one for my gaming. 

I've started looking around and I see there are some monitors with higher refresh rates, curved screens and features like G-Synk. What is that??

Also, I have red some things that hinted that there are games out there that can't be played on monitors with higher refresh rates. Is this true and how can I tell which ones can and which ones can't. 

So can you give me some links that I can go to so I can read up on all the latest cool features and gizmos a good gaming monitor should have? What they are and how they work? 

And of course, any knowledge you would like to share with me here in this forum would be appreciated too. Things like, what monitors you would recommend and what ones I should stay away from.  

Or any other thoughts you may have.

SAMSUNGS27D590C Full HD 27" Curved LED Monitor

Recently got a HDTV, the native resolution is 1920x1080 and it's full HD. Got the Xbox rigged up and the display fits perfectly. I had been kickin' it old skool with the PC side of things with a VGA connection until today. Picked me up a HDMI to DVI cable today - my graphics card has 2x DVI outs, and the HDTV has 2x HDMI outs (one of which is where the Xbox is plugged into), and VGA out, etc - but would the HDTV display 1920x1080p for the PC, would it hell. Best I could get it was 1824x814 or some ######. Thing was, that WAS a perfect fit horizontally, but three quarters of my task bar was cut off, as was the same amount from the top of the screen. Then the WytchDokta *kinda* figured it out - When you switch to AV and scroll to HDMI 1 on the TV with the Xbox rigged up, it comes up with something along the lines of 'HDMI 16:9, 1080p, Wide'. However, when selecting HDMI 2 (where the PC is connected to) it would say something like 'HDMI 16:9, 1080p, Zoom 1'. It ain't rocket science, the aspect needed some jigging around, so I hit the Aspect button on the remote (with considerable force by this time mind you).

Next thing, it's like I'm watching some old Western movie as it had 'letterboxed' my display (which was still 1824x812 at this point). So I switched back to 1920x1080, and you know what? That's right, no fit. The display needs squashing/position needs adjusting, then it will be perfect. And therein lies the problem my friends - on the TV there is no menu option to adjust screen position/size, but there is on the nVidia Display Control Panel. The problem is that the tool on there to adjust screen size cllaims to also adjust screen position but it doesn't, you got these sliders and it just like scales up/down the screen on the spot, but it won't go far enough for my display. I hereby conclude that in the past - in ages gone, when I used to game on the PC - I probably jigged around the display position/size through nVidia Control Panel or the like some to fit the respective monitor(s). Now I can't find where I can reset it, and the nVidia display resize thing is a PoS. Is there a way to move the position of the display or resize it through Windows?

Seriously though, I just got custody of my old 17" Westinghouse flat-panel back. Set it up along side my 22" WS Samsung 226BW... woah, this is fun. Have two different backgrounds, running iTunes and other junk on the right, and web-browsing/PS on the left. Very nice indeed.

If you've ever thought about it... do it. Get a cheapo monitor for the extraneous stuff on one side, and use your good monitor for the rest on the other side. Awesome.

I am running 2 computers on a KVM switch and I am seeing the same thing on both computers (but less pronounced on the other one) which makes me think that this may be a monitor problem.

Here is what I am seeing: When I move the mouse fast as if looking around, or turing the corner of a building, things with vertical lines like buildings or windows get one or two large jags in the middle of my screen. Like a crease in the picture. My FRAPS is telling me that my frame rate is fine and there is no herky jerky movement like my frame rates are too slow or the computer is bogging down.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

In the setup section of my monitor I can either choose 60 (cycles?) per second or 59 cycles per second. It is currently set to 60. Could changing this to 59 help?

My screen is a Samsung Synkmaster 206bw with a 2ms responce time.

My other headache is probably a driver problem best discussed on another board but I will mention it here sense I already have your attention.

GRAW1 mission2, is where I see this the most. While in the chopper heading to the L.Z. and looking at the rifle of the Ghost in front of me, the wall of the magazine well flickers and appears and disappears allowing me to see the magazine behind it.

Is this a driver problem somewhere?

Has some piece of game programming been dropped and will reloading the game without first removing it fix this?

Or could it even be the KVM switch?

I'm playing GRAW1&2(amongst other games) and trying to get the best possible graphics. I have PhysX enabled and frankly don't see any great improvement.

My monitor is a 19" LGW 1943SS and I was wondering if a similar size HD monitor would significantly improve things.

In time I will get a better video card, but with what I've got would a HD monitor make much impact.

Any advice (in simple terms please) would be appreciated.

switch2 kvm it was no hassel to install and there was no software involved. Now the problem i have is my win7 rig no longer recognises my monitor !! it just lists it as a "Generic non pnp type" ? and it does not list the monitors optimal screen res. The nearest it lists is 1600 x 1050 this has really screwed up my games as most now only show an available screen res of 1600 x 900 !! even good old GR has been effected and over writing the ortions XML and protecting it does not work. The XP rig is fine has no problems with the screen rez at all. Anybody got any sensible ideas

Anyway, I think it's time to get a new LCD monitor or maybe one of those combos that let you use it as a monitor or television. Considering that the TV I have now is incredibly old, it might be good to get a combo.

I guess my question is, should I look for TVs that have monitor inputs or LCD computer monitors that have a tv-tuner built in? I would think there are significant price differences between the two. Are there refresh rate issues with getting an LCD TV? Any suggestions for me? Thanks.

Anyone open there monitor and cleaned it before, have any advice? Looks a touchy subject From what I found so far, I should unplug it, and leave it for at least 1 full hour before opening it.

Have not opened 1 before, but understand the higher risk of electricity. Just don`t want to break it.

That is kind of a shortened version of what I did so if anyone needs exact details of the process let me know.

I did some research while I was replacing these capacitors and found thousands of complaints about the same issue and I guess the back story on this whole thing is that the formula for the capacitors on these monitors were pirated from another manufacturer but the people pirating the formula got it wrong. End result is that these things die quickly. I guess the same capacitors were even used in some motherboards and video cards.

The good news is that I have a new 22" monitor for around $20, but the bad news is that I'm sure a ton of these are ending up in landfills unfortunately when all they need is a quick fix. So hopefully this will help anyone having issues with their gateway monitor.

After applying this driver, I restart my PC and no signal from my monitor. Unplug the monitor and plugin a standard 19" monitor, all is fine. Put the 24 back in and no signal.

Have rolled back driver to 182.50 and all is fine.

Sent error reports.

Ok, question: I know that people flash their monitor bios but HOW do I do that, and HOW do I find/create/edit custom firmware to flash the monitor with. Basically I just want the monitor to scale with fixed aspect ratio.... Thanks.

I'm n00b when it comes to HDTV myself...we got a 42" Sony Bravia ...I hardly use myself. She want something less than 40"

We are looking at the Samsung selection since I've read many good things about it, but those are for PC monitor. Not sure if quality is same for HDTV.

In the UK it's £420, which is roughly $840 and the US price is $550. It's a monitor with no TV tuner so PAL vs. NTSC won't be an issue and it will take both 120v and 240v power input.

Are there any regional issues to consider at all, or is it the same monitor out of the box?

Is this the monitor height, or the height from the bottom of the base to the top of the unit? As I only have so much space for it to fit in. If it`s the monitor height only, i am out of luck.

The desktop real estate and image quality is staggering at 2560x1600, even "just" upgrading from a 23in widescreen monitor.

web browsing is particularly nice and don't have to scroll up/down as much in threads now

and Gaming is just incredible !!

Its Friday evening and I have just enough time before i catch the subway to run to the J&R electronics store. I am jealous of the new gateway 30 incher with inputs galore and the ability to upscale any content you plug into it...tv,console whatever.

And I'm stuck at home with an hp lp3065 30incher at 2560x1600 and I can't plug anything into it except pc dvi. I'm going to post a link at the bottom of this page for listings on J&R's website for products to plug to a pc to accept input from various sources. All I want to be able to do this weekend is plug my directtv coaxial cable into my pc or monitor and be able to watch tv and surf the net at the same time.

Can someone please read through J&R's listings and recommend to me a product that would do the job?

Smooth Edges of Screen Fonts.

There are two options there, if I select standard text display is kind of weak, especially in Outlook Express and windows dialogs, the text is small and "thin" at the monitors native resolution of 1680 x 1050.

Switching to clear type makes the text more readable - it looks fantastic actually, almost like a bold effect, BUT there is an issue with some characters colouring up - for example, in a white font on a black background, exclamation marks are displayed green, and the number 1 is displayed red! Mostly it is with very small fonts, the vertical stroke of most characters are giving off a green hue - quite uneasy on the eye.

For example, the menu items on the left of this page are displaying the issue at 1680 x1050 for me.

Anyone heard of this?

I believe that this year the 24" monitors will be the hot deal on black friday so that is what I'm saving for. The only thing is that a friend has discouraged me from getting a monitor that big because the strain it puts on the video card. Currently I'm using a 7600gt but have plans on upgrading to a 8800gts (640mb) around christmas. If I run a game like Graw 2 at my current resolution (1024x768 I believe) on a 24 or 22 inch monitor is it going to look extremely distorted or put a huge strain on my system? I'm sure the new video card will help things a lot but I'd still like to be able to play on a monitor that large with my 7600 as well if possible.

I haven't decided yet whether to go for the 22" or 24" yet but prices are looking really good lately on both. Newegg had a few 22" monitors for around $199 and a 24" westinghouse for $399 (HD 1080p). Incredible deals. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
