How many people do you know that used GR1 PC copies? Personally, I knew of loads of people with copies of the game.

Now how many people do you think would have had a GR2 PC copy? Again, I would say the number would be vast.

UBI's PC gamers make up 15% of the market. Not very much is it? What percentage could it have been if less people had a copied version of the game? 20%? 25%? Well more than enough for UBI to take us more seriously, and then maybe GR2 would have been released on the PC after all.

So do you think it is possible that UBI have not released GR2 PC because we are a group of moaning, breaking the law, keyboard loving freaks who they have no care for any more?

I'd be interested in knowing how many people in the console market copy and use games compared to the PC market. I bet it would be much smaller.

Food for thought whatever you think.

That was the case with first time GR2 for PC was cancelled almost 2 years ago.

That development team was several months along, before they were disbanded.

I'm not purposely trying to be negative, but there really is no cause for all this optimism due to the past performance.

"This decision was not an easy one.

We did not want to disappoint the loyal Ghost Recon fans, but we did not want to risk releasing a final product that did not meet their high expectations. With the launch of Ghost Recon 3 planned for Winter 2005, significant human resources were needed to ensure the quality of the future instalment of the series, thus potentially jeopardizing the quality of either Ghost Recon 2 PC or Ghost Recon 3. Taking into account their close release dates, and the fact that we felt the third opus would be a much more satisfying and evolved gaming experience, we were forced to conclude that it was in the interest of gamers for us to cancel the PC version of Ghost Recon 2. But Ghost Recon 3 on PC will hit shelves the fourth quarter of 2005, so the wait won’t be long, and will definitely be worth it."

To:RSE/UBISOFT/Serellan

I'm not so mad about the game GR2 not coming out as I am with you sticking it to us by hyping up GR2 and all that, not giving a real release date for the game, then pulling the plug.

Why is it that the console market seems to get you so hot and bothered, is it the $$ ? You have, or had, depending on what some choose here, You had a very large loyal customer Base, which you so adaptly pulled the rug out from under us. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember that Serellan was a modder like some of us and you enjoyed snapping him up for your use. The gaming industry is a hard one and getting great devs is probably like finding a 4 leafed clover. difficult.

But just realize please, even though I've had some harsh things to say to you, YOU should remember why your Ghost Recon franchise became so successful. US, the PC gamers. We have waited for the better part of 4 to 5 years for a sequel for a game that still beats out the newly released GR2. the way to make money is to "cater" or better word for it, look out for the ones who put you where you are with regards to GR.

Don't try to reinvent the wheel. For the new games content, find out what made GR hot then build upon that. most of the people I've played with have a military or police officer background and the tactical setup for GR was right on target for the most part. updating the Game engine is a gimme, as pc's improve, but with AMD 64's and dual core processors coming out, they should offer ample opportunity allow for better maps and game content.

in closing, Just don't forget that the PC crowd has proven again, according to the fact that GR2 sales i understand are low, that we are in fact where the money is at.

PEACE OUT!

I don't have an XBOX, I had to borrow my friends when I rented GR2 a few months ago. Anyway, is there an XBOX emulator out there that will boot up and at least semi-smoothly run GR2? Cause I can get my hands on a used copy for 20 bucks...and I have the oddest urge to play this game, again, even though it's not all that great.

No GR2 PC = $$$mistake IMO

I finally got my first taste of GR2 over the weekend...I had been avoiding my friends XBOX ....wanting to play it for the first time on the PC...Well..didnt seem a reason to wait anymore, so I gave it a go.

While not the game we all love and want...I do feel it was fun and playable. My buddy and I were enjoying it....and at times I felt the same thrill of COOP play of GR1. My biggest problem was that I really missed my mouse and nostromo.

I did not play single player..so I cannot comment on that part of the game.

I did not like not being able to select my kits until the mission had already started....and I hated the movies (like the bridge being blown up)

The first time through that mission....I stopped and turned around...just so I could watch the bridge blow...not knowing that it was a clip.....next time through..I went ahead while my buddy planted charges...was just zooming in on a baddie...when the CLIP took over..and turned me around to watch....when it was over...I turned back to find out that while I was being HELD...the enemies were free to keep moving...and I was being shot point blank range.

Not only does that keep you from moving ahead....but it also stops the fun of all the times you blow yourself up...or accidently drop a bridge on your buddies head.

But...bottomline on this whole thing...while not the game I want..and not the game I am hoping for in GR3 PC....it was a game that myself and 4 other members of SHADOW COMPANY would have purchased....you figure at $50 bucks a piece...and another $20 for at least 1 expansion...there is $350 that they are not getting...it may not have been game of the year...it might have gotten ripped apart in the MB's(its already getting that done anyway)...but it would have made millions.

Just a few thoughts

lo all

I been reading a lot about the mixed messages from ubisoft about releasing GR2

for PC or not. And one thing has got me wondering,

why can't ubisoft just say it out load, we are no longer gonna make Tom Clancy

type games for PC. Why all the yes, no or maybe.

We all know that Microsoft, Sony and Nitendo pay a great deal of money to game

developers like Ubisoft to make games for there consoles. And also not to release

the game in question on other consoles/PC after a given time or not at all.

The game developers dont deny it, it just how it is. Even Ubisoft has been open

about this with other games, but just not with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2.

Now why is that??? what make GR2 different then other games.

Here's what i think

The diffrence between GR2, and other Tom Clancy games, and other games is that

Ubisoft dosent own the brand name.

The brand name, Tom Clancy, is own by Putnam Publishing Group and Tom Clancy

himself of course. Ubisoft have a contract with Putnam Publishing Group and Tom

Clancy, that gives them the right to distriute games based on Tom Clancy's book's.

Putnam Publishing Group is a huge publishing company pack'd with bright

lawers. I'll bet u big money that in that contract it's specifed that Ubisoft

have to make games for ALL types of gaming units. Not just for the ones

that make the most money for Ubisoft. So if Ubisoft went out and said, what we

all know, that there not gonna make any more Tom Clancy type games for PC.

That would be a breach of contract and they could lose the rights to distribute

Tom Clancy type games. That would be a disaster for Ubisoft. So Ubisoft release

press release saying one thing and something else the next day. Just to make

sure that Tom Clancy's publisher, and there bright lawer's, dosent get wise to

want they really are doing.

And that is to make sure we buy an X-box or a PS2 to play GR2 and Ubisoft

get's a big fat check from MS and Sony.

This makes even more sence after there newest press release came out,

saying nothing about GR2, but GR3 PC is gonna come out. YEAH RIGHT...

Ubisoft unveils its

2005-2006 product catalog and adds to its financial prospects

Paris, France – March 16, 2005 – Ubisoft, one of the world’s leading video game publishers, is pleased to announce its product catalog for fiscal year 2005-2006 (ending March 31, 2006) and provide additional information on its financial prospects.

First semester: four major launches, including Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Lockdown™

In light of strong sales for titles launched over the past few months as well as the high number of orders placed for blockbusters scheduled to hit the market by the close of fiscal year 2004-2005 (on March 31st), Ubisoft management has decided to release Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Lockdown™ in the first half of fiscal year 2005-2006, rather than in March 2005. This title, which is ready for launch, will thus boost the beginning of fiscal year 2005-2006 with estimated sales of 1.5 to 2 million units.

In addition to Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Lockdown™, the first six months will see the release of three other major titles: Far Cry Instincts™ on consoles, Star Wars®: Revenge of the Sith™ for portable consoles and 187 Ride or Die™, a new brand in the urban street-racing segment.

Third quarter: Peter Jackson’s King Kong and Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30TM will join Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® and Prince of Persia® for an explosive holiday season

While Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® and Prince of Persia® will attempt to break the sales records achieved during the 2004 holiday season, Peter Jackson’s King Kong is clearly shaping up to be one of the season’s major blockbusters. These titles will be supplemented by a new chapter of Brothers In Arms, which has, in March, established itself as the benchmark brand in the World War II shooting-game segment.

Fourth quarter: new adventures for Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® and three new brands

With Killing Day (working title), an FPS specifically designed for next-generation consoles, Ubisoft plans to demonstrate once again its technological lead and highlight the capabilities of the new consoles. The group will also mark its entry into the sports segment with a basketball game (And 1™) and reinforce its presence in the strategy segment with two games under the Might & Magic brand.

32 products will be launched in total during fiscal year 2005-2006, including three for Nintendo DS™, five for Sony’s new PlayStation® Portable console (PSP™) and four for the new next-generation console from Microsoft.

Revised prospects for fiscal years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006

Taking into account the postponement of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Lockdown™, Ubisoft should register sales over €215 million for the fourth quarter of 2004-2005 while maintaining an annual operating income objective of €40-45 million according to French accounting standards and €38-43 million in pro-forma figures.

Indeed the high volume of sales for recent titles will generate additional gross margin that should fully compensate this delay. Net profit excluding extraordinary items (before amortization of goodwill) should amount to €18-22 million according to French accounting standards and €17-21 million in pro-forma figures. Available net cash flow before acquisition expenditures should equal €30 million, as opposed to the +€10 million initially projected.

For fiscal year 2005-2006, given the quality of its game portfolio, Ubisoft’s previously stated objectives remain unchanged:

- 12% increase in sales at constant exchange rates.

- Operating income of more than €55 million according to French accounting standards.

As a result of these projections and the seasonal nature of sales, Ubisoft is expecting a net profit excluding extraordinary items (before amortization of goodwill and business assets) of over €28 million according to French accounting standards and available net cash flow before acquisition expenditures of more than €40 million.

“Ubisoft is ending 2004-2005 with outstanding results thanks to the successful launches of the Brothers in Arms brand, which has become the undisputed benchmark in its category in just one installment, and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell®, which has received rave reviews. For the first time in the video game industry, the Official Xbox® Magazine in the United States awarded a score of 9.9/10 to the blockbuster Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos TheoryTM. This rating, which recognizes a strategy based on quality and creativity, allows us to reaffirm our studios’ standing among the best in the world,” declared Yves Guillemot, president and CEO of Ubisoft. “Fiscal year 2005-2006 should turn out to be another record year right from the first quarter, with major product launches, an even richer game portfolio and an outlook of strong growth and increased profitability. Ubisoft is once again proving its ability to win market share and create value.”

Unfortunately this press release is extremely vague about GR2 - what do you guys make of it?

I'm an avid fan of Tom Clancy-franchised games in general, and Ghost Recon in particular, but I'm begging everyone who is slamming RSE, Ubi, Tom Clancy himself even for the lack of a Ghost Recon 2 for PC to please desist at this point. Every possible reason that there isn't a GR2 on PC has been covered ad nauseum at this point, and really we're all just chasing our tails now. I just want to get across a few things I've thought of up to now.

Point 1: There will be a Ghost sequel for the PC at some point. Eventually. Nothing we can do can accelerate the process. The devs peruse these boards. We all know they do. They know the frustration level. They can't help not to, what with the endless, cyclic posts covering it. Now it's like having a guy standing next to your desk yelling at you constantly. Two or three minutes would have been enough to get the point across, yet this clown insists on beating you down for days on end. Point taken and noted. Let's move on.

Point 2: I gave up laying on the floor kicking and screaming for what I want long ago, decades even. I think many people need to take the same lesson to heart.

Point 3: Unfortunately I believe there is now a certain level of expectation for the game's sequel that may never be satisfied. Just because there will be a sequel doesn't mean it will meet the stringent requirements some folks here have set for it, and they will therefore be mightily disappointed, which means we are all in the queue for a long litany of "why GR2 PC sucks" comments. Mark my words. Some people cannot be satisfied, save for they were in on the development process, which is what I truly believe some think they're entitled to. Yes, we helped get the Ghost Recon franchise launched, but we are a part of the puzzle, not the be-all-end-all of the game's, or any forthcoming sequels, development. Frustrating, yes. But keep in mind what I said about the devs. They know we're here and what we're looking for. Just be patient and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Point 4: If the game is not what you'd hoped it would be, if it's not perfect, keep in mind... IT'S A GAME! I have a lot of things to waste my energy on, and games are not the highest on my list of priorities.

    off

That is all. Carry on.

Christian "Serellan" Allen (GR2 Game Designer) presented the lecture "Navigating the Minefields: Military Accuracy in Tactical Shooters" at the recent 2005 Game Developers Conference. His session had a great turnout, and now Serellan has generously allowed the PowerPoint slides from his presentation to be available to the community here.

http://files.3dretreat.com/file.asp?fileid=628

It's very informative and one of my favorite parts is when Serellan talks about dealing with "grognards"

Definitely gives us some insight into what research goes into developing a game like GR2.

Here's the introduction to Serellan's GDC session from the official GDC website:

Navigating the Minefields: Military Accuracy in Tactical Shooters

Speaker: Christian Allen (Game Designer, Red Storm Entertainment)

Time/Date: Friday (March 11, 2005) 2:30pm — 3:30pm

Track: Game Design

Format: 60-minute Lecture

Experience Level: Intermediate - Basic familiarity or some experience.

Description: Military-themed shooters are a large part of today’s games market, and as more “tactical realistic” titles crowd the marketplace, the line between simulation and game is blurred. Real life often conflicts with what makes games fun, and it is a challenge to combine the perception of what happens in the military with what is exciting and satisfying for the player. With a setting based in a world of jargon and details, there are many pitfalls and challenges to designing in the realm of military shooters.

This talk focuses on the techniques that designers can use to ensure that military shooters are exciting and fun, while avoiding common accuracy mistakes. With a consistent gaming world model, proper attention to detail, and a good use of resources, you can mold your title into a game that takes advantages of the genre and appeals to both niche fans and mainstream audiences.

Idea Takeaway: As the competition in the tactical shooter genre increases, more detailed and accurate games stand ahead of their rivals. The audiences takes away the core techniques, challenges, and details involved in creating a military-themed shooter.

Intended Audience and Prerequisites: This session is aimed at game developers working on or aspiring to work on military themed games, particularly in the tactical shooter genre. Writers, marketing professionals, and military consultants will also benefit.

We are going to try a little experiment here ... hope it works

Previous GR2 wishlists dealt with what people wanted changed between GR1 to GR2. Now that the GR2 Xbox is out, we are starting a new wishlist to see what people would like to see changed between GR2 Xbox and GR2 PC.

Red Storm does monitor fan forums, and has a solid history of implementing fan requests into their games. We want this wishlist to be a one-stop simple and clear list for the devs to read.

Please list what changes you would like to see in point form in an objective neutral manner. Note that this thread is NOT for questions or discussions about the merits of a proposed change - that should be left to the regular part of the forum.

Forum staff reserve the right to edit this particular thread aggressively to remove anything we deem as inappropriate comments. We also reserve the right to post other people's suggestions here with modifications to the original poster's language to make their statements more clear or less negative or inflammatory.

Edit: Also, in an attempt to keep this wishlist lean and mean, please do your best not to repeat suggestions made in previous posts as they will be deleted at our discretion.
