A new toy, sort of.

Remember this?

May, huh. A long time ago. Well, yesterday I arranged for the bulk of a new system to be purchased. I'm now just a couple of drives (the computer kind) away from a nice new system.

Cooler Master 371 case with a Thermaltake TR2 500W power supply to start with. The motherboard is a Gigabyte A75M-S2V (built to last, with USB 2.0 & 3.0 ports), 2x4GB (8GB total) Patriot DDR3 1600 memory, and an AMD A83870K Quad Core APU w/Radeon HD6550D.

Part 2 is the drives, and if I can pull off the cost, the hard drive will be a 3TB Seagate Barracuda, with a cheap multi-format Samsung DVD-X. I'll toss in a Mushkin 60GB Chronos SSD if I get incredibly flexible on costs.

I have a friend who works at Microsoft, so Win7Pro is on hand, cheaply.

Thoughts?

I'm considering a 60 or 120Gig SSD as well, but realistically, they aren't worth the speed increase unless you want to spring for luxury items. I would likely be better served with a WD Barracuda & a couple of WD Reds in Raid 0 if money is no object. My wife has a newer computer with an SSD, and though it boots fast, it really has little performance gains for regular use.

What I want to do (and this can wait a while) is a dedicated video card. It looks like a limited number will tie in with my APU to work in CrossFireX mode, which is the sort of overkill I can get behind. They are relatively cheap, too, with the top end running about $72.
