Wildlands Stuttering gameplay - Auto Save Related?

If you are experience stutters of up to a second when playing Wildlands, it can be related to heavy disk drive usage during autosaves. Even though Wildlands auto saves are small files, this can disrupt smooth gameplay.

To resolve this move the Uplay game save folder to an SSD drive rather than a HDD drive as the faster access times can elimiate this problem totally.

Note that installing Ghost Recon Wildlands on an SSD drive improves general game peformance.

Takeover Domination Achievement (Khyber Strike)

The Takeover Domination achievement in Ghost Recon Future Soldier Khyber Strike DLC is worth 10 gamerpoints.

To achieve the Takeover Domination achievement you will need to be part of a squad match where your team wins by more than 100 points.

This is possible by playing in Takeover mode and firstly hacking the other team's objective to benefit from a 3x score multiplier. You are then going to need a margin of over 30 kills to gain the 100 points required to win the Takedown Domination achievement.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier PC locked to 24Hz?

Using a HDTV monitor with HDMI you may find that Ghost Recon Future Soldier PC is locked to 24Hz. This may be fixed in a patch from Ubisoft.

The issue is with HDTV at 1920x1080 resolutions, using a HDMI connection. To bypass this issue, an alternative to an HDMI cable should be used.

For gaming, setting the resolution to 1680 x 1050 as a default, should run Future Soldier at 60Hz.

Please check with Ubisoft Official Support for updates on this issue.

Device is removed: Device hung due to badly formed commands.

The "Device is removed: Device hung due to badly formed commands" is a v1.1 Error on Ghost Recon Future Soldier that can result in freezes and black screens or crashes to desktop.

A temporary fix for this issue until Ubisoft patch the problem is to use Nvidia Inspector to underclock your graphics card.

An example for the Nvidia 580GTX card is shown below.

Orginal Setting : GPU = 795 MHz, MEMORY = 2004 MHz, Shader 1590 MHz

Suggested Setting : GPU = 700 MHz, MEMORY = 1800 MHz, Shader 1400 MHz

Low or locked 50 FPS solution.

Issues with locked 50fps (for example on a 120Hz 3d monitor) can be resolved as follows.

Create a custom resolution of 1919x1080

In Nvidia Control Panel, Click on

  • click change resolution then
  • click on Customise
  • click Create Custom Resolution
  • Select 1919 X 1080

Start Future Soldier, and go to the Settings to change to your new resolution.

With these settings and a good graphics card (GTX 680 and higher) it should be possible to get 120FPS with these settings.

I Can't Run Faster Than 60FPS, Why Is That?

I can't run at faster than 60FPS, why is that?

To see the framerate during a mission entering the console by pressing NumPad Enter key, then typing ToggleShowFrameRate, then press Escape.

If your FPS seems capped at 60FPS, downloading the latest drivers for your video card may help. If you are running winXP or 2000, there is an issue that limits your refresh rate to 60Hz, no matter what the windows setting is. This caps your framerate at 60FPS.

There is a free tool called NVRefresh that fixes this, the official site is at http://www.nvrt.net/ but has been down for some time. You can grab the latest version of NVRefresh from mirrors listed on this page at MajorGeeks.

The first thing to do is upgrade to the latest NVidia drivers, which you can find on the official Nvidia drivers page here. Then check the NVRefresh tool compatibility page to see if the tool has been tested with your new drivers. If you get a green result, run it, click the "Apply Settings" button, reset your PC, and enjoy 60+FPS with Ghost Recon - or any other game!

There is also another tool, that works with any graphics card, not just Nvidia, download RefreshLock here.

A more professional tool can be downloaded that does all that and much more. Grab Powerstrip here for a host of graphics options at the touch of a button.

Note : If you notice your monitor starts to display text a little fuzzy, or out of focus around areas of the screen after using these tools, simply reset to default settings, or tone down the refresh rate. You can do this through your normal window settings, Display Properties>Settings>Advanced.

Note : Please check the maximum refresh rate your monitor permits. Setting any of these tools higher than the manufacturers recommended refresh rate can cause problems.

FPS and Soundcards?

This came in from Nurface and might help those with FPS problems.

"Many times we read the required specs for games and find that our computers meet the standard, so we expect smooth gaming. I have found that with the wrong sound card life can be very unpleasant. I tried numerous drivers for sound card and graphics card. My computer setup is PIII 866MHZ/256 RAMBUS memory/Aopen PA256MX Geforce2 MX 32MB AGP. I had previously tried Chaintech sound card CMedia PCI Audio but that card didn't run smoothly. It met the requirement I might add, so I purchased the soundblaster 16 PCI. I couldn't believe the difference the sound card made on my system. My Frame per seconds went from avg 30 to 60fps with Sb 16. The price for the sb 16 pci card is around $30.00. This may improve your gaming experience."

How Do I Solve Sound Issues?

Poor sound performance, popping, or muffled sounds may be helped by the following procedures:

Creative Labs PCI Series | OS: Win98, WinME

  • From the Ghost Recon main menu screen, go to Options | Sound and
check the "Use Alternate Cache" checkbox.
  • If you hear odd or loud echoes when entering houses or caves, uncheck the "Use EAX" checkbox on the same page.
  • Exit the game and restart.

If none of these help.

  • Go to: Control Panel | Multimedia | Audio | Advanced Properties | Performance. Adjust the Hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left (Emulation Only).

Creative SBLive and 5.1 Series | OS: Win98, WinME

  • Go to: Control Panel | Multimedia | Audio | Advanced Properties | Performance.
  • Adjust the Hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left (Emulation Only).

Creative SBLive and 5.1 Series | OS: Win2K

  • Get the latest Win2K drivers for your card--for most of you, this will be Creative's site, www.soundblaster.com.

If this doesn't help:

  • Go to: Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia | Audio | Advanced | Performance.
  • Adjust the Hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left (Emulation Only).

Creative SBLive and 5.1 Series | OS: WinXP Home and Pro

If the problem persists:

  • Go to: Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia | Audio | Advanced | Performance.
  • Adjust the Hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left (Emulation Only)

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz | OS: Win98, Win2K Should be similar.
(Also VideoLogic Sonic Fury)

  • Get the latest drivers from Turtle Beach (dated 1-15-2001)
  • Open the Santa Cruz Control Panel and check the following settings:
  • Main Tab: Set the Master Volume to the highest setting, and make sure the button under the slider is on. Set Appropriate speaker mode, and VersaJack setting (should be analog in most cases).
  • Mixer Tab: Set the Wave Out Volume to the highest setting and make sure the button under the slider is on. Adjust this setting later to get a comfortable play level within the game.
  • Effects Tab: Make sure both Effect1 and Effect2 are OFF.
  • Synth Tab: Set Max hardware notes to 64, and max software notes to 128.
  • Other Tab: Enable 3D Stereo Enhance, turn off Legacy DOS, and do enable Direct Sound Acceleration.

A-bit AU10

  • Run dxdiag and set the Sound Acceleration slider to the second notch (Basic).

Why Are My Menus Fuzzy?

This is a Voodoo 3000 problem. Drivers for Direct X8.0+ were never made for the Voodoo 3000 cards, and thus the card is not compatible with Ghost Recon. The game may run fine, but the menu's will be unreadable.

Voodoo 5000 should be okay.

Riptide sent in a fix for the fuzzy Voodoo Menus.

"I have here a fix for the blurry text in the menus of Ghost Recon that many people are experiencing with older video cards(Voodoo3). What it does is take out one of the two fonts stored in the font texture so that the card can handle the size of the image without it being rescaled. There are two sets of files in the archive. One removes the larger font and uses the smaller one. The other does the inverse of that. I'd suggest using the smaller font since the larger one can make the text too big and it ends up getting chopped off at the end of it's allocated space in the menus.

Download the files here.

I want to make a dedicated server on Linux, what do I need to do it?

  1. Install Wine. You need a recent version - IIRC most successful reports seem to be using 1.14 or later. Some Linux distros (eg Ubuntu) don't include a sufficiently up-to-date version in their repos, so the best thing to do is add the main Wine repo and install from that. (If you're not using a Debian-based distro, choose one of the other options here.)
  2. Install GR.
    • Grab your CDs (or DVD) and run the installers (including patches) in sequence. In Ubuntu, you can do this easily by right-clicking on each .exe and selecting 'Run with Wine Windows Program Loader'. If your distro doesn't do something like that, you can do
      CODE
      % wine "D:\path\to\setup.exe"
where 'D' is the letter Wine is using for your CD/DVD drive.
    • When it's done, each installer will hang. Grab your favourite process manager and look for a zombie process called 'IKernel.exe'. Kill this and the installer will exit. (Skipping this or just killing the installer can cause errors in subsequent installers.)
  3. Configure GR in Wine. Open the Wine Configuration Editor.
    • Click 'Add Application' and select GhostRecon.exe. Set it's Windows version to XP. (It may be worth experimenting with 98/2000, but I haven't...yet.)
    • Make sure GhostRecon.exe is selected, and go to the 'Graphics' tab. Check 'AllowDirectX apps to stop the mouse leaving their window' and 'Emulate a virtual desktop'. Uncheck 'Allow window manager to decorate the windows' and 'Allow window manager to control the windows'. Set Vertex Shader support to 'Hardware' and disable the pixel shader.
    • Go to the 'Audio' tab and check that the right sound driver is selected. In the DirectSound section, set hardware acceleration to 'Full' and turn on Driver Emulation.
      1. Dedi launcher. Let's add a shortcut for launching the dedicated server. Find the launcher for GR and copy the command. Then create a new launcher, insert the same commande and add the dedi switch on the end. The commands should look something like this:
env WINEPREFIX="/home/yourusername/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Ghost Recon\GhostRecon.exe"
env WINEPREFIX="/home/yourusername/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\Ghost Recon\GhostRecon.exe" -autoserve
 You're done!

  • I haven't found a way to play the game intro movie without crashing. (Insertion & extraction movies play fine.)
  • Frame rates are lower than in native Windows. However, I'm still using integrated graphics of 2005 vintage, so it's quite likely that someone with a decent graphics card wouldn't notice any difference.
  • With Wine set to emulate a virtual desktop, menu screens display in a 640x480 area of the screen. Disabling virtual desktop fixes this, but can lead to focus issues when entering a mission/game. (Do give this a try; I've only seen focus issues since upgrading to Ubuntu Jaunty - Intrepid was fine.)
  • GameRanger now installs; you'll have to install Flash along with it (the ActiveX version). However GameRanger can't seem to launch GR to join or host a server.
  • Haven't tried TeamSpeak or the TeamSpeakOverlay yet.
  • xFire installs & loads under Wine, but it's pretty unstable. Haven't managed to get it to run long enough to join or host yet. The gFire Pidgin plugin handles xFire status & friends pretty well; I haven't had a chance to test joining or hosting through it yet.

"UBI1.exe" in the original Ghost Recon 1 CD is reported as malware by my anti-virus software.

This is a false positive and nothing to be concerned about, it's Ubisofts Product Registration application (used on most Ubi games EG GR, Myst III, Splinter-cell Etc). It launches the "Register Now" application.

Paranoid users can easily remove the entry before it even launches by simply removing its start-up entry from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Run

Is Ghost Recon Part of the Rainbow Six Series?

No. Ghost Recon is a Tom Clancy title, like Rainbow Six, it is produced by the same guys that brought you Rainbow Six/Rogue spear - but it is not the next Rainbow Six game. Rainbow Six centred on an elite CT group called "Rainbow", Ghost Recon's focus is an elite army squad called "The Ghosts".

Is Ghost Recon Like Rogue Spear?

Ubisoft was targeting players and fans of The Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six series, hard-core gamers and military sim fans - so yes, Ghost Recon is like Rogue Spear. It is a tactical First Person Shooter where the player controls a group of characters in a mission based environment. Where the two differ is in the Ghost Recon war scenario, rather than a Rogue Spear terrorism scenario, and a revamped engine with improved graphics and Artificial Intelligence.

What is the Plot for Ghost Recon?

Official Press Release : "War has begun on Russian soil and threatens to encompass the globe. Lead an elite infantry team through a series of military missions around the world, ranging from covert actions to search-and-rescue operations, to all-out firefights in this first-person squad-based action game."

"The whole storyline revolves around old-school Russians trying to get power back." A militaristic group comes to power in Russia in 2008 and begins to arm insurgents in neighbouring territories. When the insurgents begin to agitate, the saber-rattlers in Moscow have a perfect pretext to step in and use military force to reassert their influence in several former Eastern Bloc territories. The Ghost Recon squad (loosely based on the US Army's Land Warrior program) steps in to save the day."

Is There a Planning Phase Like in Rogue Spear?

Planning in Ghost Recon will be carried out in a far more flexible manner. During missions players will have the ability to quickly and easily form, change and adapt plans as the situation changes. This will be facilitated by map overlays which permit new instructions to be issued to individual troops who will acknowledge and carry out orders as instructed.

  • stealth skill : decreases the chance that the enemies will detect that character.
  • Endurance : keeps you character more active even after taking wounds.
  • Leadership : provides a performance boost across the board for all members of the fire team.

Where can I find Ghost Recon Servers?

With the original Ghost Recon you can of course play IP to IP, simply enter the IP address of your friend who is hosting and you can join through the Multiplayer window.

Of course this screen is not a game browser in the normal sense of the word and only lists games IPs you have already manually entered.

To browse public Ghost Recon servers you need a tool, and their are two you can try.

http://www.gameranger.com/

http://www.voobly.com/

Both of these game matchmaker clients work woth Ghost Recon.

Also, remeber you can use our Ghost Recon Forums to find people to play Ghost Recon with.

Where Can I Host My Mod?

If you plan to host your mod yourself, make sure your hosting account permits large file transfers are GR mods are very popular. It is not unusual to see GR mods disappear off the web as quickly as they appear because webhosts remove them due to server strain.

We can organise to mirror your mod so everyone can download it. If your mod is less than 5Mb you can mail it to me, if it is over 5Mb you should try and find some temporary hosting that I can download it from.

How do I install and play a custom campaign?

These instructions take you through the process of installing a custom campaign mod from the GR 6 DVD Mod set , and how to start playing.

1. Insert Cd 1 and open the first folder, called "8 Days Reloaded"
2. In there is a zip file called "8_Days_Reloaded_v21.zip", copy this file to a temporary location on your computer, then extract it using winzip or winrar or similar.
3. You should now have a new folder called "8 Days Reloaded", inside here are the files that make up the mod.
4. Right click and "copy" the folder called "8 Days Reloaded".
5. Now go to your Ghost Recon installation folder, and open the folder called "mods", and paste in the "8 Days Reloaded" folder (Note, paste the entire folder, not just the contents).

I have the Steam version of Ghost Recon and am having some issues running mods, like War of Infamy.

Please see our basic guide to installing Ghost Recon Mods on Steam before attempting this fix.

This is due to the folder structure used by Steam. It an be corrected by changing the registry setting as follows...

Here's the AppPath registry entry info:
Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\App Paths\GhostRecon.exe
Subkey: Path
Subkey type: String
Value: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\ghost recon\

Can I play Ghost Recon mods with the Steam version of Ghost Recon?

Installing and playing Ghost Recon Mods is easy with the Steam version because Steam installs the full game complete with the latest patch.

Here's the procedure, check the screenshots below to see how it works. In this example we are installing the Save Santa v3 mod by Tinker.

  • Purchase Ghost Recon, Ghost Recon :Desert Siege and Ghost Recon : Island Thunder from Steam
  • In Steam click the Install button for each of the 3 games in the order shown above
  • Go to Ghost Recon Downloads or open your Ghost Recon Mods DVD and select the mod you wish to install
  • Download the mod and extract the zip file to a location on your hardrive**
  • Click on the new folder with all the mod files in it and right click and select Cut
  • Now go to the Ghost Recon Mods folder, inside the Steam folder (see folder image below)
  • Click into the Mods folder, then right click and select Paste
  • You should now have a new folder inside the Mods folder named after the mod
  • Launch Steam and Play Ghost Recon
  • Go to the OPTIONS screen in Ghost Recon and click on the mod in the left window, then click ACTIVATE and it will move to the right window.
  • You are now ready to play the mod. Depending on what type of mod it is you might need to start a New Campaign, or start a Quick Mission.

** If the mod installer is an exe file and not a zip file, just run the installer and let it install to your C drive, then go to your C drive and cut the mods folder from the Red Storm folder and past it into Steam as detailed above.

The following screenshots show the whole process right from installing Ghost Recon, to seeing the new mod activated on the Main Menu!

Install Steam Ghost Recon

Launch Ghost Recon Steam

Steam Folder Structure with Mod folder

Op_Save_Santa_3 is the mod correctly placed in the Steam Ghost Recon Mods Folder

Now activate the mod in the Options screen.

Home LANs and The All Seeing Eye (ASE)

ASE shows people a game that is online at the time and the IP it is at. When you have 2 or more computers hooked up on a home network and one is connected to the internet with a router the gateway pc will broadcast that it is online, and it is in fact hosting the game to ASE.

Without seeing a home LAN on a LAN list you can still join the cable IP if known. This allows you to join a home network and play with them.

If you are wanting to play a private LAN game on a home network you must disconnect the gateway computer from the router or pull the cable/phoneline depending on which kind of connection you have or just turn the router off.

What Multiplayer Games Are Availible?

Solo Multiplayer

· Hamburger Hill – The player who spends the most time in the central area of the map wins.
· Last Man Standing – The winner is the last one standing.
· Sharpshooter – The winner is the player who has the most kills at the end of the game.

Co-Op Multiplayer

· Firefight – The map is seeded with randomly placed enemies, whom the player must defeat.
· Mission – The game plays like a single-player mission, with the same objectives, enemies and so on. If your team does not have the required equipment for a mission, a chat message will go out informing all players of this and the game will not advance.
· Recon - The players must make it from the insertion zone to the extraction zone.

Team Multiplayer

· Hamburger Hill – The winner of a Hamburger Hill game is the team that spends the most time in the central area of the map.
· Search and Rescue – The winner is the team that finds the three hostages placed on the map and escorts them to safety successfully. The hostages are invulnerable to fire.
· Last Man Standing - The winner of this game is the last team still alive at the end of the game. If time runs out before one team can eliminate all of its rivals, the win goes to the team with the most kills.

1. You must to unistall the ubi.com program from your PC.

2. Please download the "uninstall.reg" file to your desktop from http://help.support....m/uninstall.reg and double left click on it.

3. Once this is completed, visit http://gamingzone.ub...GameService.exe and download this file to your desktop. Once you double left click on the "GameService" file that will be created on your desktop, the game service should work fine.

NOTE: for step 2 you can either right-click on the reg link and "Save link As" or click on the link (it open what looks like a page of text) and then save file to desktop and then run it

or you can just manually delete the following registry entries (in bold) using reg edit:

GRAW - Gameplay Support

How Do The Cover and Move Commands Work?

If you give a ghost a "cover" order in the reticule order menu (the "drop down" one), that means he will surpress any enemy spotted in the general direction in which the order was given. It does not mean that he will take cover at the spot where you pointed.

If you go into the tac map and give a ghost a move order, and from the last node of the move order "trail" you pull out a "cone" - that cone represents the direction in which you want the ghost to guard. He will then find a suitable cover in the general area around the last node in the "trail" and be on the lookout for (and surpress) enemies in the direction of the cone.

Also, if you give a move order in the reticule order menu, the ghost won't move to and stay at the exact pixel which you were pointing at when giving the order - he will find a cover in the general area where you pointed. Same goes for the last node in a move order "trail" issued in the tac map.

How do I call in an Airstrike?

1. To use the airstrike, you have to be in first person - not on the map!
2. Scroll down to Airstrike (or Apache or Artillery, depending on which mission it is) and point your crosshairs at the target. (For me it's been enough to point at the top half of the radar dish on top of the AA-battery to call it in).
3. While Airstrike is selected, call up your Crosscom menu - wherever you have that mapped - and choose the Attack option, still pointing at the target.
4. Take cover and enjoy the fireworks!

HINT: Try using the airstrike as much as possible on any other targets before you reign fire down on the objective's targets. The airstrike/apache/artillery will dissappear as an option the moment you've destroyed all the targets that are part of the objective.

Extract the contents of the downloaded zip file. You should have a .bundle file and a .bundle.log file, put both of these files in the custom_levels folder in your GRAW installation.

Installing an OGR coop map packaged in a executable installer (exe file)

All you have to do with an installer is make sure it points to the GRAW custom levels folder. For example if your games are installed on drive D: it should look like this.

d:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter\custom_levels

Summary

What you should end up with is a pair of files for each OGR Co-op map, placed inside your custom_levels folder - see the image below for an example of 3 installed OGR mods.

Playing OGR coop map.

To play an OGR map yourself simply start GRAW, and select the Multiplayer option. On the next screen select the LAN Server button at the bottom.

This will present you with the server options screen. Click the Start Map button, and select your custom map from the list that is presented. If the map does not show please check you put the bundle file(s) in the correct folder, and check the mod's readme file if there is one.

Now click the Create button to launch the game.

No sound from your own gun.

If you hear all sounds in the game, but not the sound of your own gun, it's probably because the audio output of your sound card doesn't match what you have connected to it. E.g. you may have the output set to 5.1 but you only have two speakers or a pair of headphones connected, meaning that your sound card sends audio signals intended for speakers that are not there.

In other words: Make sure the output of your sound card is set to whatever speaker setup you have connected to your computer. This is a hardware setup and it is done "outside" the game.

This is due to InstallShield not being able to replace an older copy of Installshield with the files provided in the GRAW Setup.

The workaround for this is to delete the problem folder these files are in and allow the GRAW installer to replace the necessary files.

Users with less than the recommended 1Gb of RAM will experience this issue. The only solution is to upgrade your PC to the recommended 1GB of RAM. We would actually recommend that users have a minimum of 2GB of RAM if at all possible, for the very best overall playing experience.

When I try to install GRAW on my PC, it gets to about 78%, where it is installing ...\Sound\Briefings\..., and it hits a Component Transfer Error saying "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" How can I fix this or get around it?

OK, this sounds nuts but stay with me...try cleaning the disk off with Windex.

I was having the same problem with GRAW 2. Reached wit's end. Only common thread on forums for that error type pointed to a media (either disk or drive) problem. Whilst ruminating over my failure, I noticed a couple of VERY light finger smudges on the disk. Windexed, installed, and it works perfectly. Now I'm gonna go Windex my lawnmower and see if that makes it start--that dad in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" might've been onto something afterall. LOL Good luck!

How Does the Co-Op Campaign Mode Work?

You and up to three of your friends form a team and play through the single player campaign together. Any slot left open (if there are three or less humans in the game) can be filled by a ghost controlled by the AI.

The server host becomes the team leader and he is the only one who can target enemies and place nodes for the others to follow in the Tactical Map. If the team leader dies, the mission is over for the entire team.

If a client (i.e. any ghost team member who is not the team leader) dies, he takes over any AI controlled ghost alive in the team (that is, if there were any AI ghosts in the team to begin with (remember, that was an option).

You can see through your teammates’ headcam (cross-com view) at any time during the game.

There are no save points during a co-op mission, meaning that it is truly tricky to get through a mission and succeed.

It is possible to start a co-op campaign and fill only one slot (you) and leave out the three optional AI teammates: That means you play the game alone (even the missions that in single player campaign are non-lone wolf mission) all by yourself - without save points.

How Does the Team v. Team Domination Mode Work?

There are two teams (US and Mex), starting at their own respective home base. Each team can be divided in sub-teams (fire teams), consisting of up to five members.

The map is divided into a number of zones, which from the beginning are all neutral (except for the home base of the two teams, which always belong to that team and can't be taken over by the other team), but as soon as a member of either team walks into a zone connected to a zone already held by that team (from the beginning that is of course only the base zone) that zone will begin a process of being overtaken by that team (the "ownership bar", underneath the map in the HUD, increases).

This process goes faster the more members from that team are in the zone, but stops if an equal number of members of the opposing team enter the zone.

To take over a zone which is already held by the opposing team you need to go through the process of "release" that zone from the opposing team - e.g. "neutralizing" it (the "ownership bar" goes down).

This is done by outnumbering the enemy numbers in that zone - needless to say it goes faster the more of your team you have in there. Even though your enemy owns the zone, there might be no enemies in there, as a zone taken over by one team will be held by that team until the opposing team fully "neutralizes" the zone.

In short: To take over a neutral zone you only need to stay in the zone until the "ownership bar" is entirely filled, but to take over a zone held by your enemy you need to first "release" it from their ownership, and then take it over youself (which naturally would take twice the time compared to taking over a neutral zone).

A zone whose ownership is changing starts flashing on the map - which should send the opposing team running there to look after their assets. This might however just be a distraction to lure them away from their advance elsewhere on the map, so there are many tactical layers to all of this. It's very intrigueing once you're in it - wait until youy play it.

Any zone can be neutralized, but to take it over for your own team it must be connected via a supply line (visible on the map in the HUD). This means that you can run across the map and neutralize an enemy zone - "poking holes" in their empire - but you cannot take them over until your own frontlines have reached that far.

Needless to say, it is of great importance to move together and take over zones in teams. You cannot run around on renegade missions - a team who plays tactically and know how to advance through the map as a team will run you over big time.

Up in the right corner of the screen is the map, showing the zones as well as you and your temmates' positions. Benath it, as mentioned before, is the "ownership bar" (beneath the map). There is also the "presence indicator", showing exactly the number of friendlies and enemies in your zone.

If you are alone in a zone that you own (wow, that rhymes well), and suddenly the number of enemies pops up to two - you are in trouble! Call for support or the enemy, now outnumbering you, will take over the zone - or at least neutralize it.

The flashing indication on the HUD map and the "presence indicator" makes it fruitless to go hide in the corner of the map and hope that no one will find you. Get back in line, soldier!

Tactical points are earned by killing enemies (amount of points dealt depend on if you shot the enemy in your or his zone) and neutralizing/taking over zones. You lose tactical points for shooting teammates.

Tactical points can be exchanged for heavier weapons. Standard settings are set so that you can't afford anything but the M8 and a side arm to begin with, and have to secure a set of supply lines to you earn the right to, say, a Barrett or a SAW.

Tactical points can also be exchanged for the ability to once spawn in the vicinity of you team leader, which is not always worth it, but can prove very useful every once in a while, when you want to save the time it takes to run from the home base to the front line of the battle.

You can change the number of lives each player has to dispose of - infinite, five, three or one (meaning no respawns).

Spawn camping is counteracted by making every enemy in your home base visible on the HUD map, and making anyone who spawns immortal for five seconds.

There are no red diamonds marking your enemies in the Domination mode. Do not even trust the screenshots – trust me when I say this

Your team wins if:
A) You take over all the zones on the map (except for the enemy base zone, which cannot be taken over)
B) The match time runs out and you dominate the most zones (match time can of course be altered server-side).
C) The server was set to allow a limited number of respawns and you killed everyone in the opposing team so that they cannot respawn anymore.

GRAW - Modding Support

How Can I Edit Textures in GRAW?

Currently there is no official way to do this. However, this is for those of you who just can't wait for official support and insist on going and doing it your own way (more power to you).

As with all of my tutorials I assume you have a basic understanding of your computer and with Adobe Photoshop. I use Photoshop 7.0, so it might be a little different in older versions, but not really.

This is very similar to GR1 when it comes to skinning, the hard part is just getting the files set up properly to skin.

What You Need Getting Started
The first thing you need to do is make sure that you have everything you need installed and ready to go. If you have everything ready to run it will take you about five to ten minutes to start skinning. The instructions seem complicated, but they're really not.

First, go to your GRAW install directory (C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter\ - by default) and make sure you have at least four folders in this directory:Bundles, Data, Settings and Support.

Start off by creating a folder called "Local." Then, within this folder create a new one called "Mods"

Now, go back to your root folder and open up Context.xml. You can use any editor you feel comfortable with to edit this file, I use Notepad personally because it's light, basic and easy.

What you're going to do is take the following code, and replace the word "english" with "Mods" as I have already done. This is the third line in the file and is easy to find.
CODE
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<context>
<script base="data" exec="menu/menu" editor="false" language="Mods"/>

Okay, now save the file and move on.

Now, open up the GRAW Bundle Extractor. Click on "Open Bundle" and use the dialogue box to navigate your PC to find Quick.Bundle : <path>\Bundles. It's very easy to find.

Now, once you have it open in the Bundle Extractor, expand the view so you see a folder called data. Click on that folder so it's selected and then click on "Extract Node" Another dialogue box appears so you can set the path of where to extract. You're going to extract to your newly created "Mods" folder.

Now wait patiently.

Once it's done, find the "Mods" folder, open it up and make sure the "data" folder is there. Open the data folder and select all of the folders within it. We're going to "Cut and Paste" all of the folders inside the "data" folder to outside of the folder. So, when you're done, you'll have <install path>\Local\Mods\anims NOT <install path>\Local\Mods\data\anims. I hope this makes sense on what to do. We're basically removing everything from the "data" folder and putting it in the "mods" folder. Once you're done, delete the now empty "data" folder.

Okay, you're ready to rock.

Opening the Skins
Opening the skins is very easy now. You've already installed the Plugins for Photoshop, so you simply open Photoshop, go to Open and navigate around until you find the textures you want.

Ghost Textures/Skins are found:
<install path>\Local\Mods\textures\atlas_characters\ghost_team\diffuse
diffuse_set0 = Uniform/Faces
diffuse_set1 = Helmet/Cross-Com

The "bump" folder contains the bump maps. Leave those alone for now.

Open up "atlas.dds" in Photoshop.

Do whatever it is you deem necessary to have some sweet skins, and have fun.

Once you're done...

Saving and Exporting
One in the same, sure, kinda.

When you're done editing, and you're entirely satisfied with your work save it first as a PSD file. Then you're going to merge (Ctrl+E) all of the layers together. You can not save your DDS file with layers, or it will crash your game.

Once you're ready, go to save it as a DDS file and you get a nice pop-up window.

Leave all of the settings on default except the drop down menu. You're goint to change that from DXT1 to DXT5.

Once you're done, click save, and over-write the "atlas.dds" file.

Testing
This should do it. You should now have a nice new skin to play with in game, and some clothes I'm sure your Ghosts will appreciate.

Testing is easy, fire up the game, load up a single player map, summon your Ghosts and have a look. Unfortunately for saps like me with mediocre PCs, this can take a while.

Conclusion
Just a few notes regarding what we've just accomplished.
  • You are, in effect, creating a mod that does not over-write the original game file. However, because this is an unofficial mod, the game can only support the one mod folder. So, if you have 8 skins you like, tough luck, you can only have one. Basically, the game will only read the files that are in the one and only "Mods" folder we created. You're free to do what you want within these files, but understand that you do not have the ability to create multiple sets of skins.
  • This is very unofficial. Hopefully in the coming weeks we'll see some official support on this, but in the mean time, enjoy what you have while you have it.
  • If you want to make a mod for release, simply delete all of the files you did not edit, and package the ones you did. However, you must leave the folder structure in tact.
  • Some people are naming their "Mods" folder "english" to prevent themselves from editing the Context.xml file. If you chose to do this, it will work... but let's try to have some uniformity as a community.
  • I'm here to help. Don't hesitate to PM me, but please do a forum search for your question first. Our Forum Search function was recently updated, is very user friendly, and chances are someone has asked your question before. However, I will work one on one with you if you really need it.

Now locate the line

<ret_color value="29 137 151" />

and change the numeric values, where the 3 numbers represent the Red, Green and Blue values respectively. If the line does not already exist, you can add it.

You can use the following guide for selecting other colours.

Red <ret_color value="255 0 0" />

error Message cant find member: pressed in type

This could be related to the single shot bug, where you cannot select single shot, and all you hear is a "click" when pressing Z key. Often the game will crash to desktop at this point.

There is no fix. After pressing z a few time to change the rate of fire the game will crash, it is a known bug that will probably never be fixed.

What is a RAR file?

A RAR file is a compressed collection of files, commonly used to compile Ghost Recon mod files.

Before you can use these files you have to uncompress them using a suitable application, as listed below.

IZARC - Free multiformat compression tool. Our favourite.

WIN RAR - Archive Manager that also handles RAR files, but not free.

Dedicated Server Memory Leak Fix

GRAW2 dedicated servers can lose as much as 200Kb/second due to a memory leak. This can mean a massive 700Mb/hour/per player.

This can be monitored by through windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) - tab to 'Performance' or 'Processes' you can monitor the server memory usage.

Here you may see that graw2-dedicated.exe would crash with 'out-of-memory' errors.

After applying the following fix though memory usage will stablise at around 400Mbytes usage.

This fix also works with multiple instances and versions on the same server, in that: <threaded_renderer value="false" /> will not interfere with multiple instances  of the SADS setting up on a new thread if it’s available. For example there are reports of 4 GRAW2 servers in the same 4 core virtual machine and all 4 SADS are more stable after this fix.

Best of all this memory leak fix is simple to apply!

Navigate to your "Ghost Recon Advanced WarFighter 2" folder.
Edit the "context-standalone.xml" file and add the following line:

<threaded_renderer value="false" />

If you want to play offline by yourself, please see our seperate entry for playing Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 offline after the Gamespy shutdown.

This guide applies to both Steam and boxed retail versions!

Playing Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Online after Gamespy Shutdown

Late in 2014 Gameshare coded a small app that bypasses the need for a Gamespy account to play GRAW2 online. IT does this without changing any game files, simply by adding a few lines to your windows hosts file. This is a windows system file that allows users to re-direct internet traffic. In this manner Gameshare redirects the GRAW2 gamespy request to the Gameshare.co servers, where the request handles the login procedsure instead of the defunct gamespy.

This is a legitmate process prepared with the assistance of Ubisoft.

All that is required is to download the GRAW 2 Launcher, and run it.

GRAW 2 Launcher

Once the programme has been launched it will ask you to direct it to the graw2.exe file. If you are using Steam GRAW2 this will be in your steamapps folder.

The launcher will then start GRAW2 and you should click the Create Login button and then type in your preferred username and a new password. You may have to do this step twice for it to take effect.

Once you have done this you should see a list of multiplayer servers in the Multiplayer menu.

If you need further support please post in our forum topic Playing GRAW2 after Gamespy shutdown.

Crash in application version: 0.2989 Custom level bundle coop_castle_day contains an invalid filepath.

This error message occurs due to a conflict with different mods containing the castle day remake for GRAW 2. The only resolution is to temporarily remove the other mod(s) containing the Castle Day map (TRR for example) or if you are not sure which bundles it is in, remove all files from your Custom_Levels folder, apart from the version of Castle that you are trying to play.

In Bogie's Campaign, how can you play it with friends instead of the AI Ghosts?

Setup the server is go to "Multiplayer", select if you want to play over the web or LAN. If you look at the upper left side of the screen, you will see a drop down box that defaults to "LAN Server" - you want to change this to "LAN Campaign Server".

All of the Sanchez maps are listed in order with the mission number before the name. IE: 08_Toxic_Revolutionaries_Part1.

My campaign won't progress past mission 2, or Mission 7: Get me Rosen.

There are a couple of reasons this can happen.

First of all, from the campaign mission loading screen, make sure that you select the CONTINUE CAMPAIGN button and not the PLAY MISSION button. You'd be surprised how many people have done that in error!

If that is not the problem, you'll need to delete all your quick saves from the following folder. The quicksave files are the ones named quicksave_*.dsl. do not delete any other files.

GRAW 2 Installation > settings > profiles > (yourprofile) > savegames

If that does not work, you can install the GRAW 2 Complete pack of mission saves. Note that this will mean you will continue with a different set of Ghosts, and is really a last gasp solution.

NB The above was written when GRAW 2 was at Version 1.02 in July 2007. Subsequent patches will probably resolve this issue.

How does the COVER command work in GRAW 2?

The cover command functions differently for each of the modes.

In ASSUALT mode, cover means "lay down cover fire here". For the sniper, Hume, it's a little different though, he should not lay down cover fire in assault mode, but stay in ready sniper position and take out any enemy he sees in the given direction.

In RECON mode cover means "watch this area and kill and engage and enemies that come in and are a threat". In this mode you will get a verbal report from your team first.

When I give my Ghosts a command to attack a helicopter they attack it with rifle fire rather than use their Zeus rockets. How can I make them use the Zeus rocket?

The helicopters have to be marked with a red diamond to be able to order your squad mates to attack it. So wait for the choppers to come close enough to mark them (hear the blip sound), and then order your men to attack. They should fire at them with the zeus if they're in position.

In Welcome to Juarez but when I go to the under ground tunnel, my game crashes..consistently.

1.5 Patch caused this.

Crash caused by the spawning of the Grenade Launcher when you enter underground from either entrance.

Solution A: Do not ever go down there in campaign mission.

Solution B: Delete lines of code in mission 03 script that spawn the weapon.

I am at the extraction zone at the end of "Get me Rosen", but he won't get into the helicopter. I've replayed the stage a number of times, but it's always the same result. Have I missed something?

This issue is discussed here .

In summary, you need to order Rosen to follow you (use the middle mouse wheel), and then enter the helicopter yourself. He should then follow you in.

Whenever I equip the GL for my rifle in SP, the mission only starts me out with 1 grenade. How do I fix this? I have version 1.05.

This was something that appeared in patch 1.05, possibly in an attempt to stop grenade spamming. There is a workaround but it is only applicable for single player or co-op play because it involves editing game files and would get clients kicked from game sevrers for altered game files.

This solution courtesy of No Quarter.

  • Extract the \data\sb_templates\sb_weapon_data.xml from patch.bundle

Edit the following lines, changing the 0 to 4.

<var name="gl_clip" type="number" default="0"/>
<var name="spare_gl_clips" type="number" default="0"/>

Now put this file in the \Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2\Local\english folder.

Ghost Recon Online - Gameplay Support

How do I get into Ghost Recon Online quickly?

So you're not a readme type of guy, that's okay, here's the skinny on what you need to know to get right into the action without getting shot every 5 seconds.

GHOST RECON ONLINE ESSENTIAL INFORMATION TOP TEN

1. Give your enemy less of a target area and make your shots more accurate at the same time by using stances to your advantage. So CROUCH (C) and go PRONE (CTRL) are esential, use these stances wisely.

2. Area too hot for crouching? SPRINT out of the danger zone (SHIFT), but quickly get back to crouch or prone to level your weapon.

3. Right Mouse Button is your essential zoom button for scoping in close on your target.

4. When using cover switch the camera view (Q) to get the best possible line of fire from your vantage point.

5. Hand your hand combat more your type of thing? Or maybe some dude just ran around the corner right in your face, introduce hom to the butt of your rifle by using the melee key (Mouse 3).

6. Rate of Fire is one of those key binds that is guaranteed to be different in every game, don't hash around looking for it, it's the X key in Ghost Recon Online.

7. Reload on the other hand is the same in almost every shooter, so we don't need to tell you, it's R, do we?

8. I is for Inventory, adjust your loadout and extras in here.

9. Special weapons are F, so bash on that F key to unleash your extra goodies.

10. Firing from henind cover with your weapon resting on the cover, gives you an accuracy bonus.
