Posted by Rocky on Tuesday, July 26 2005

Ubisoft UK are running a fantastic competition that will win one lucky fan an all expenses trip to Germany to play Ghost Recon 3 and meet the dev team! The event is a huge German game convention and is sure to be a superb trip.

To win, you have to produce a 500 word report on Ghost Recon and Ubisoft will pick a winner from the submitted entries. There are a number of conditions so please check the Ubisoft UK portal and read them carefully!

USA Competition also running! Check it here.

Good luck - we want to see a GhostRecon.net regular going to Germany!!

Downloads
Posted by Rocky on Tuesday, July 12 2005

I just wanted to update you all on the situation with the downloads. It is indeed true that someone at the Gamespy network deleted the entire collection of Ghost Recon mods that the Ghost Recon community has created over the past 4 years and that we maintained in collaboration with affiliates @war.

If goes without saying that we are disgusted with Gamespy's actions, undertaken without any warning, consultation or forethought for the consequences.

At this point in time, that leaves us without a database of 1300 Ghost Recon mods, and without working download links. However, a few months ago we did start working on a brand new, improved download system that would see us into the next generation of Ghost Recon, with new advanced features. That new system is currently at about 15% completion. I now plan on bringing it online earlier than planned due to this current situation forced upon us by Gamespy. Of course, any new file mirrors will not be on the Gamespy network. Once we have a working download system up and running, it will be populated with all the mods that used to be here, with new download locations. Then we'll look at replacing all the hundreds of now broken download links scattered throughout the site.

In the meantime, please remember that our affiliate at the 3d Retreat network have over 150 Ghost Recon mods for free download. Forum chat on this subject can be found here.

Virus Warning
Posted by Rocky on Tuesday, July 12 2005

I don't usually cover virus warnings here at GR.net, but I feel this one warrants mentioning in the hope some unprotected readers will take steps to protect themselves.

I am sure most of you will know of the sick email going around that pretends to be news about the London bombings, when it is in actuality a trojan virus. What you may not know is that the payload is infact more sinister than some reports would have you believe.

The National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre in the UK has issued a warning that this Trojan is attempting to gather sensitive information from Goverment locations. You can read more about it in this PDF, but please make sure your anti virus software is up to date, and avoid opening emails from unknown parties. If you do not have AV installed you can get a good free one here. Forum discussion and updates here.

Downloads
Posted by Rocky on Friday, July 8 2005

There is a major issue with the Download section at the moment. It would appear that Fileplanet have deleted the entire database of Ghost Recon mods, that's gigabytes of files.

As many of you will know the downloads system was built by our affiliates @war, and the files were hosted by Fileplanet. As the mods were sent into me here at GhostRecon.net by the modders, I updated the database and uploaded the mods to Fileplanet. You, the end user, could then find the mods via our download section and download them free from Fileplanet. It would appear that Fileplanet have cleared out that entire system.

The amount of work involved in resurrecting gigabytes of deleted downloads hardly bears thinking about. I am examining the feasibility of a few options and will post an update early next week.
