XBox v PS2 Posted by Rocky on Wednesday, August 25 2004
One interesting point arising from our hands on with Ghost Recon 2 yesterday was the difference between the Playstation 2 and XBox versions. They were quite different, and the dev team confirmed that the versions were being developed independently to concentrate on the strengths of each console. You can read more on this at Eurogamer and catch up on the chat regarding this unique decision in our forums here.

TG Map 1 -updated- Posted by Rocky on Tuesday, August 17 2004
The Outpost is a new map released by El Oso under the name of TG Map 1, created by H-Hour with some help from Sarc. H-Hour's real life commitments prevented him from putting the finishing touches to this map, but thanks to El Oso, it is now seeing the light of day. The map has a few buildings in a central area, surrounded in nicely lighted wooded areas. Plenty of cover and different elevations should offer good games. It comes with three lighting versions from various times of day.
Download the PC version here or the Mac version here. All game types are supported, so go have some fun! Discussion in the forums. The pack contains the map in 3 different lighting conditions. *Update* Mac users download this patch. Command map download from El Oso.

IGN Shooters Posted by Rocky on Friday, August 13 2004
IGN have just published a "Shooter Roundup" that features many upcoming shooters, including Ghost Recon 2. Unfortunately what little they say about Ghost Recon 2 seems a little wide of the mark... "The fifteen missions in GR2 are looking to be much less linear and scripted"
I'm not quite sure why IGN are saying that Ghost Recon missions are linear when they are far from it, so we'll side step that comment. But the comment about GR2 missions being less scripted, well, has me almost at a loss for words, so I'll let you folks debate that one!

Yes to No CD? Posted by Rocky on Sunday, August 8 2004
The legality issues of altering Ghost Recon code has prevented gamers from lawfully applying unofficial patches to Ghost Recon to avoid hunting the CD out every time they wanted to play Ghost Recon. An interesting new product is now available which achieves the same aim (i.e. keeping your original CD safe), but does not alter any of the original games code. Even more interesting was seeing Ubi Soft make a statement on the subject.Ubi Soft's worldwide technical director is quoted in PC Gamer as saying this... "The more ease of use and flexibility you give to a player the better. Shortening the time it takes from 'I want to play' to 'I'm now playing' is crucial.
Apparently the system includes features to prevent the tool being abused or exploited. Read all about it at GameJackal.com.

Battleborne Sue Acclaim Posted by Rocky on Saturday, August 7 2004
You'll probably remember Battleborne from many moons ago when they produced an awesome Ossetian Woodlands Ghost Recon mod (21,000+ downloads), then Ghost Recon designer John Sonedecker joined them and they started work on Combat Elite: WWII Paratroopers. We even pulled off an exclusive interview about the project with John Sonedecker back in December. Well, since then an interesting turn of events has seen Battleborne take publisher Acclaim to court over alleged unpaid fees. For Acclaim this is seriously bad news as they have not been in good financial shape of late, and for gamers, it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer to see how Combat Elite is looking! More reading at the inquirer and stockhouse. Thanks to zjj for the research.

DYNACOMP Down Posted by Rocky on Wednesday, August 4 2004
Regretfully things are not looking bright for that potentially ground breaking Ghost Recon mod DYNACOMP. The project lead, Parabellum, has stepped down from the project leaving the large modding team with a partially complete project, but no Project Leader. It's such a shame to see this project go under, and I'd urge any experienced Ghost Recon modder with a lot of spare time and commitment to contact the DYNACOMP team and offer their support. Discussion in our forums can be read here. Finally, I'd just like to wish Parabellum all the best for his future endeavors. Para has been supporting the Ghost Recon community for a long, long time, and kept coming back even when real life dragged him away for extended periods. Good luck Para.
