DRM is a Disservice
If you search Google for our headline, you'll probably get almost 9,000 results. That gives an indication of how Digital Rights Management is perceived across the entertainment sector.
Yesterday Gabe Newell brought DRM out into the bright lights of mass media courtesy of the 2010 Game Developers Choice Award ceremony where he was recognised with the respected GDC Pioneer Award.

The introduction to the award will be of interest to gamers, and Gabe's acceptance speech is equally interesting if you want to know where gaming tech is headed, you'll not want to miss his speech.
Where the first round of applause came however, was when Gabe addressed games publishers, referring to DRM has a negative influence
There were actually only two rounds of spontaneous applause during Gabe's interesting speech, one for the DRM put down, and one when his auto-prompter failed.
Watch the speech here, (60 minutes in) , comment on Gabe's insight in our forums!

Future Soldier First Look
CVG.com are reporting that the Future Soldier scenario places the Ghosts fighting an ultranationalist group that's managed to depose the Russian president. Confirmation that HULC gear will feature in the game allowing the transportation of heavy equipment. However some fans of the series are hoping that reports of jumping ability for the Ghosts will prove inaccurate.
A full breakdown of the Playstation Magazine report will appear here next week! In the meantime, comments on what has been revealed above are welcome in our Playstation Future Soldier forum.
Ubisoft DOS Attack
While some are questioning why Ubisoft seem to have been targeted while other publishers gaming servers remain unscathed, most in the gaming community have responded with derision focusing on Ubisoft's much criticised new DRM system.
Ubi Corrects DRM Hacked Rumours

No to Ubi DRM, Petition.
Ubisoft have moved to try and stem the uproar by clarifying a couple of points in this post in our forums. A CVG blog entry however explains just how potentially frustrating this system can be.
The online petition in opposition to this anti-piracy initiative is gathering pace now, and even contains a signature from a high profile games developer.

New DRM Same Old Same Old
PC Gamer simulated an interuption to their internet connection while in game and were immediately dropped from the game, losing all progress since the previous save point in the process. This confirms previous reports that in order to play Ubisoft's new games, a permanent internet connection must be available throughout the game session, even during single player games.
While Ubisoft may see this as the best answer to combat piracy, there is unanimous and universal condemnation of this anti-piracy measure that once again would seem to punish the paying customer.
If anyone supports these measures from Ubisoft, we'd love to hear your point of view in our forums, as so far it's all a one way debate! Join in here.
Scott Mitchell Trailer Report
One aspect of his investigation is of course the highly controversial optical camo - already debunked by forums members as too far fetched in this cloak poll.

Optical Camo
Even here there is a poll to gauge fan feedback on the use of seemingly out of this world technology. Ubisoft are responding to this unrest with a short explanation on the technology where they hope to satisfy fans that the technology is indeed plausible. The optical camo feature will be up on the official site here shortly.
Once the news is up, post your feedback and impressions here.

Big Announcement
Considering that Ghost Recon Future Soldier is now officially the game worlds worst kept secret, there's a good chance Ubisoft are about to reveal details of what will be one of their biggest titles this year, and one that Ghost Recon fans have waited a very long time for!
Or, perhaps it is something totally unrelated - a new Rainbow Six....?

All I Want....
Why is this, why would gamers settle for the gameplay of a shooter designed almost 10 years ago? Perhaps the answer lies in todays games as much as it does in the aging Ghost Recon. While the feature set of recent releases continues a diminishing trend, they start to appear like second rate games in comparison to Ghost Recon with its rich set of features and clever array of gameplay options.
Perhaps this is why gamers are crying out for nothing more than Ghost Recon with better graphics. This yearning can be seen all over, not just within the Ghost Recon Community, but in other shooter game forums too...

Ghost Recon Future Soldier Tech
On the weapons front we are expecting to see the XM-25's first official appearance in a PC Ghost Recon game. I say "official" because if you know where to look, this weapon has already been modded into the original Ghost Recon. The XM-25 is known as a Counter Defilade Target Engagement System. Defilade is of french origin meaning behind cover, and that's exactly what the XM-25 is designed to do, eliminate targerts concealed behind cover. You can see the XM-25 in CNN's video report now, and probably in Ghost Recon Future Soldier later this year.
On the gadget front, how about an exoskeleton for Ghost Recon 4? Man portable exoskeleton's are starting to reach the stage of deployment readiness, and are therefore entirely convievable for Ghost Recon Future Soldier. Lockheed Martin are investing heavily in their own HULC exoskeleton and we expect to see something along these lines in Ghost Recon 4. View photo's, data and a cool video at Lockheed's HULC site.
Discuss these and other possible Ghost Recon Future Soldier Technology in our GRFS forums.
Ubi Reveals New DRM System
Much like Relic with Company of Heroes, each time a Ubisoft game is started it will phone home using your internet connection to verify that it's legitimate. This will happen via existing Ubi or Uplay accounts.
There are pro's and cons to this method of verifying game sessions, so in our forums we have a Q/A from Ubisoft painting the positive side of the debate, and to kind of balance that out we have a slightly more cynical take from member krise madsen. Which is more accurate? You decide.
