Tom1935 Ghost Recon Interview

When Tom1935 started a discussion in our forums about cheating in GRAW2, little did we know what an excellent discussion it would turn into, asking and answering many questions often asked by new GRAW 2 multiplayer gamers.

More than that, it transpired that Tom1935 was kind of unique in our membership, as he had served in the Korean war after joining the Air Force in 1954, and was therefore probably the most "mature" GRAW2 player we knew about, at 75 years old!

We sat down for a brief chat with Tom to find out what is was about GRAW2 that made him want to learn all about multiplayer to improve his game.

Hi Tom, thanks for taking time out to answer our questions! Would you like to tell us a little about yourself, i.e. what Country are you in and did your serve your country?

Thanks for your interest...I was born 1935 in Oklahoma, lived in Texas shortly and back to Oklahoma thru most of high school. I joined the Air Force in 1954 and was a cryptographer and got out of the Air Force and have lived in Texas since. I was in the Korean War towards the end of that war.

When was your first contact with computers, and what was it like?

I worked for Texas Instruments and learned programming, I moved into management with approx 30 technicians and a few engineers under me, and left TI to go into the house framing business and developed a program to calculate all the rafter cuts, left that and went into the CAD business developing house plans and producing reports for environmental companies around the Dallas area.

What was your first personal computer?

Texas Instruments built a computer competing with IBM, which was a failure, but I did use it in my house plans using my own program then AutoDesk came out with AutoCad which took care of all my needs, eventually going into Civil Engineering using AutoDesk's cad program. I purchased all versions of AutoCAD until I retired approximately 2000.

You actually built your current gaming PC yourself. Please tell us about that experience!

This was scary, I did a lot of research and tried to buy top components, everything in the computer was purchased. I assembled all this and turned it on and it worked, what a relief. A few hours later, it quit, determined a power supply failure, got a new one and have been using it since.

The computer was built last year for my Christmas present. It seems to work great with games. I have also purchased a new mouse Razer Naga molten, wow, lot better than my ms mouse. I have ordered a mouse pad the SteelSeries SX, but this is so popular its been over a month and still don't know when I will get it. Trying my best to make the hard surface pad I have now work by putting stuff on it to keep it from skipping. Just today, I bought some silicon spray...hope it works.

What was the first computer game you bought?

Call of Duty (the very first one I think) was my first shortly followed by Ghost Recon (the first version I think). I have since bought every version of Call of Duty and Ghost Recon but by far enjoy Ghost Recon best because of having a team and keeping them alive. Looking forward to the new one coming out, if it ever does! All I every played up until recently are single player, only started multiple players recently, just prior to joining this forum.

What is your favorite gaming genre? Do you play other games than GR?

I like war games where you have to think and plan in order to stay alive, not just running around trying to out shoot others. That's mainly why I am a sniper, I don't kill near as many as others, but I don't get killed very often either. A few of the better players like Rahn and Sidd sometimes get me. I have purchased other type of games but haven't found any that I stay with very long, always going back to Ghost Recon.

How did you find GR.net? Do you frequent other (gaming) forums?

I found GhostRecon.net thru searching internet, and have not used any other forum, yours seem to be pretty thorough in its coverage and discussions, so don't need to go anywhere else.

Do you have friends your age that are as computer savvy? Do they play, too?

No, have no knowledge of anyone my age doing this. Guess I am an odd ball, and others think I am also, especially my wife, she can't understand why I want all this special stuff just to play a game.

Thanks again Tom, pleasure to have you onboard!

Thanks for your interest, if I can be of any further help, please don't hesitate to ask.
