Ubisoft sues over Assassin's Creed leak.
Apparently an employee of the disk manufacturer snuck an early version of the PC version home and released it via the internet. Now Ubi wants money for breach of contract and damage to it's reputation due to reviews slamming Ubi for a crash part way through the game due to a bug that was purposely put there by Ubi.
Ubi has more to look at besides some jerk releasing pre-retail code into the wild. The quality of their recent games is less than desirable right now and this lawsuit will not make up for that. Maybe it's time for the heads of the company to take a deeper look into the reasons why their games are not selling well instead of blaming just piracy. While I haven't played it, I hear Assassin's Creed wasn't that great. We all know that Vegas and Vegas 2 had major problems and bugs in the first were not fixed for the second version.

Apart from being frustrated learning how to play the game, I have had not a single issue with it so far here. Enjoying it TBH.

I talked to an Ubi guy on another forum: The "bug" consisted of removing code so that two cities did not load, making it impossible to complete the game. It was done this way because crackers will usually locate anything added to the game, but not something that is removed.
It was done as a watermark, so that Ubi could track any leaks from early pre-release builds (pirates complaining on forums that the game doesn't work), leading them to this disc duplicator.

If Ubi bugs were all security devices, they'd have the most secure games on the planet
Joking apart, thanks for the explanation Krise.

I liked the game and didn't have any issues. That is weird about introducing a "bug" and touting it as a security feature though....

actually that's quite common. The same thing happened with Titan Quest -- people pirated their game and wondered why it was crashing. Stable code, hastily made security measure -- just cuts the program, no 'security check failed' error message or whatever.
sloppy, but not unusual.

love or hate UBI, they are one of the few companies actually releasing computer games that we wouldnt otherwise see.
and if i was going to develop a game which is a dream of mine, i would hate the thought that some ###### at a publishing company would cost me millions of dollars just bcoz he's a ######.
