Quote

Here’s what he had to say: “I think people would rather make a game that sells 4.5 million copies than a million and “Gears” is at 4.5 million right now on the 360. I think the PC is just in disarray… what’s driving the PC right now is ‘Sims’-type games and ‘WoW‘ and a lot of stuff that’s in a web-based interface. You just click on it and play it. That’s the direction PC is evolving into So for me, the PC is kind of the secondary part of what we’re doing. It’s important for us, but right now making AAA games on consoles is where we’re at.”

Not the best article, but an interesting quote.

Cliffyb, laughable as his game industry media icon persona may be, has been a driving force in the games industry for about ten years. He's also a brilliant game designer, and started speculating about this shift a couple of years ago -- when games like Resident evil 4 and God of War aggressively pushed innovation in console-centric genres while the PC industry stagnated.

What do you guys think? Aside from occasional lucky hits like Portal, Bioshock (mercilessly consoleized as it was) and Crysis, the PC games market hasn't really had anything worth mentioning for years.

Sad, but true. Only reason i play so much on consoles now is only becuase on the PC, games are slim and stale. I like new games coming at me ever month. I get bored fast i guess! I still play PC games, but its more like 2 or 3 games a year if i even make it that high anymore! Heck the only games i have on my PC now are Ghost Recon, FarCry and World in conflict! 2 of them are very old with only one new game. I do have to say though i believe in afew years World in Conflict may still be on my PC. Hope theres something new worth keeping on my PC long enough to say its there in the future and not just something i play for a week and take off!

So the next round of easily digestable, forgotten-by-tomorrow mass market games (which, for all its qualities also include Gear of War) will be released on consoles only? Fine by me. I don't play that sort of games anyway, or rather I can do just fine without them.

PC games will be very rare on the shelves of game stores? Fine, I'll just buy them online, which is the way the market is going anyway.

Many PC-exclusive titles have been narrow genre-types without huge mass appeal anyway (war games, simulators e.c.t.) and I seriously don't see them going away anytime soon.

OK, so some good old PC-classics will be mutilated in the name of mass market appeal *cough*Ghost Recon*cough*? No problem. The same kind of games will just reappear under a different name *cough*Ground Branch*cough*.

The PC games market may be stagnant, or perhaps even shrinking a little bit, but it won't go away before the PC as we know it today does (which will happen eventually). Anyone who really want to play the kind of games you find on consoles these days, well they should get themselves a console.

Respectfully

What is the experience of pc gamers playing games on Vista? Are there games you cannot play, like older games, like GR, OFP, SWAT 4,etc.
What about problems with drivers or directx?

Meh. Consoles have just as many classics, is the thing. I was up last night playing GR1, no expansions, again. It's an amazing game. I'm excited about the possibilities of Ground Branch, although i did get banned from their forums with my 'it's too early to judge' approach to things. However, hell, I still play Super Mario World if I have a friend around to play co-op with -- that game has held up a lot longer than GR, and I get bored of it less often.

Thats the main reason i still play on PC from time to time (war games, simulators e.c.t.). If there where more, since that type is my true gaming wants. I would of never moved to console to begin with. Well except the ONLINE over there is very impressive! I do have to admit simulators like Subs (SH3) and Planes (All) are the ones i want the most! War games are great, but after playing them i wish there was more sim in it and never last long except GR! Yet since there aint that many simulators, war games get must my time on all the systems depending what one its suited for best! Like World in Conflict right now on PC, I love it! Still debating if i want to get it for Console also since its so great on PC! Thats going to be a tough one, i might have to get it on both.

The games I can play on Vista with my current Acer Aspire 5610 laptop with Intel integrated graphics are GR, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Ground Control, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, Sim City 4 Deluxe, SC will run (but not on my laptop) to name a few. FS 9 and X run on Vista of course and FSX, with DX10 is supposed to look absolutely stunning. Yes, older games are hit or miss, but Vista is becoming more and more stable every day. Just make sure you have more than 1GB of RAM though.

That wasn't exactly the reason.

I would say "going out of your way to intentionally antagonize the studio owner and instigate disharmony" would be a better description. ;)
