How do I add a scope effect to my zoomed view, so everything outside the ret goes black?

you'll need a good scope mask. (PM niccola and ask if he can share his)
then make sure in the .gun file you have this sniper option <WeaponMotionType>2</WeaponMotionType>
or <WeaponMotionType>3</WeaponMotionType> for bolt action rifles.
and set the ZOOM in three steps, like this for ex.
<ZoomSettings>
<Zoom>1</Zoom>
<Zoom>4</Zoom>
<Zoom>10</Zoom>
</ZoomSettings>

there is a scopemask in the orig GR and that comes visible in the weapon motion types 2 and 3 if im
not mistaken. its kinda big and do not cover everything outside the reticle. but it works.

Thanks ! I tried just editing the <WeaponMotionType>2</WeaponMotionType> but it replaced my nice custom rets with the default full screen crosshairs :(

As for the mask, I can probably find one in one of the mods I have installed, I've seen this effect a few times playing centcom and NED.

The main thing I'm concerned with is how to get this effect without losing my good rets.

you may already have solved the problem, but all you need to do is re-make the gun file in igor and select 'sniper rifle' on the weapon type.

Doesn't that still leave him with the problem of having that sniper crosshair instead of his choice of reticle? I think so.

ermm....no, im pretty sure you still get the masking around the side of any ret, as long as it's set to 'sniper'rifle.
just choose the ret you like, and it should work. im pretty sure i tagged an mp5 as a sniper rifle once, using ingeloop cobra ret, ret was fine ,but with the mask around. or maybe im just mental and have blurred memory....fiddle-de-dee. :unsure:
