Being unable to edit these files with pain shop pro 7, I thought maybe others like myself could really use a set of generic, logical kit icons. Particularly sniper kits with an SMG. For example:
.50 sniper / mps
7.62 sniper / mp5
5.56 sniper / mp5
And of course supressed variations.

Even though the pics wouldn't necessarilly match every weapon in detail they would be way better than blank icons.

You can edit and save a file as .rsb but no alpha channel right ?
Why dont you use colored kit icons instead of "generic" ones ?

I think somebody, maybe DTD, did a tutorial for creating the .kit rsb's. Did you look at that?

I think that's right. I can open them, I don't know if I can edit them, I thought that's what the alpha channel is for.

When I said generic what I meant was I don't need it to be the exact weapon, for example I would just need any .50cal image for all my .50cal snipers, and maybe an mp5 to represent all my smgs. The only detail I would like is silenced and non silenced.
Now that you mentioned colored kit icons, I honestly don't remember if I've seen those or not. I can make those without alphas? The alpha seems to be the source of all my problems.

PSP7 will not work with alpha channels so it always comes down to that problem whenever I read tutorials. I'll look for that one though, just in case.

UPDATE: ok disregard, I'm going to go ahead and get PSP at the student price, so in the meantime I'll just check out some tutorials and stuff.

I started out on PSP7 just like you, and being a bit of a renegade, I chose not to go down the Photo Shop path. Instead I moved on to PSP8. Which I stuck with a for a few years. Then I got a new rig and upgraded PSP8 to Paint Shop Pro Photo X1, as soon as X2 was released I upgraded to that too. Only cost me around £40 to upgrade. Sorry Photo Shop heads, PSP is starting to take the lead. Paintshop Pro Photo X2 is the future.

I could do that. I didn't realize newer versions would help regarding alphas. I really don't care which is better, PSP or PS, they both do way more than I need. I just need to be able to do GR mods and paint flight sim planes. I'll look into the new PSP, it should cost less than even a student discount PS.

niccola I am able to edit that m4_m4.rsb and save it with no problem. I could probably use that file to create all my new ones in color also. And yes a mini tut would be great whenever you get time, thank you!

K, first youll need a kit icon file to use as scratch and paste the weapon pics on it. You may use this one as example.

http://rapidshare.co...xample.zip.html

Then you will need good side pics of the weapons you want to add as kit icons, specially with white background or the way you prefer, like this one of a m4.

Posted Image

IMPORTANT: You may edit the pic the way you want, but keep an aproximate 1:3 (height/width) ratio, cause this is necessary to add correctly the weapon as an icon.
Then using photoshop you will make the weapon pic to be 54 width x 18 height pixels size, select it and paste on one of the blanks parts of the kit icon file, like in the screenshot below.

Do the same to the other part of the kit icon, adding a secondary weapon, or a pic of a magazine, etc ...
Save as .rsb, giving the name ou want. Then add to the ..../shell/art/kit folder, add the kit icon name to the correpondent .kit file and check in game if its ok.

Very nice I appreciate it nic! So they don't even need an alpha channel. I wonder why I've never seen that info before, that's pretty important info if you ask me, lol.
This is what I have now.

I forgot to sharpen the image before saving, so it should actually look a lot better than this one does.
