I got wind of a small piece of software called Game Shadow. As stated at the website:

Quote

GameShadow tells you what version a game is, whether there is a patch available for it and lets you download the patch via its fast dedicated file-servers.

GameShadow manages your patch library and installs patches for you. In addition to games, GameShadow keeps your Microsoft DirectX and graphics drivers up-to-date.

GameShadow is free to try. You get the fully functioning client for free but with a 5 download limit for the trial period.

Now, I tried this out and it updated a game I have in a snap.

Some of you may seem a bit sceptical of this, and think it a hack, but YOU, tell Game Shadow which game folders to look search through. It also checks your DX version and your vid card drivers to see if they are up to date.

Try out Game Shadow and post your thoughts on it here.

So you can only use it for five downloads, but it will still tell you what version your game is and whether or not there is a patch available?

Edit - 5 download or 14 days of use... which ever comes first. That's ok, of my eight games, it only recognizes the version number of AA and NASCAR 03.

There is a pay version that is supposed to allow unlimited patching.

If you do not tell it which games to check, it won't check them. It should still tell you that there is a patch for the game. I tried it on a Tomb Raider game (not that I have played it) that came with my sound card and it said that there is a patch for it

An open source version of this would be cool. :)
